1st consultation with Dr Behnam in Santa Monica

I've been losing my hair since I was around 15/16, and I'm 30 now- NWIII, thin on top with a heavily receded hairline (think a bit more advanced version of Jude Law's hair today). I've been reading up on treatments and options for years, and started out trying unproven treatments (like viviscal) before settling on minoxidil and propecia for the past few years.

Anyway, now I'm at the point where I would like to restore my hairline. I cover it up (with mixed results) using toppik and hairspray- without that, I would easily look 10 years older. Like a lot of people here, the daily challenges include having my scalp exposed by simple things like strong winds, swimming pools, and helmets. Luckily, my hair loss seems to have stabilized since I started using propecia.

So I recently went in for a consultation with Dr. Sean Behnam, and I've done a lot of research on his background and talked to some of his patients. His online reviews and his credentials are impressive... But he seems relatively unknown in the hair transplant community (based on my perusal of all the message boards and IAHRS all).

Does anyone have any suggestions on what I should look for in a hair transplant doctor? I'm going to get a second and maybe 3rd opinion, but I really liked my experience with Dr Behnam (and at this point might be a little biased when I meet with other doctors).

Dr Behnam estimates that I could use 1500-1700 grafts in the strip procedure, and that I have really thick donor hair (Hispanic background). He only does one patient a day, and spends the first half of the procedure entirely hands on, after which three technicians work on the patient for another several hours while he continues to monitor/assist/etc. He gives a 7-page document of instructions for after the procedure, and gives his cell phone number so that his patients can contact him any time. Also he gives 10 laser therapy treatments afterwards and periodic check ups following the surgery. Overall the professionalism and the knowledge - both from him and his consulting staff - were incredibly informative.

So I would like to hear from more doctors in the next month or two and schedule a procedure for December (when I can take 2-3 weeks off work) . Any thoughts on this doctor or others? By the way, I live in Southern California if anyone has any recommendations..

bro i live in southern cali my self. and i am sitting at the airport in Vancouver waiting for my flight back to lax. Why? because i just had my 2nd successful surgery at Hasson and wong yesterday. I had a surgery in la before at a place called sampson or something like that. they almost ruined my life.. If you could give me the name of his clinic il help you research.. but from experience.. my advice to you would be to spend the cash and go to one of the BEST surgeons out there. Dr hasson really saved me. I was basically a butchered repair case a year and a half ago.. now I'm 1 day post surgery number two (this surgery was the cherry on top of a previous surgery that looked incredible already)

btw, the place that butchered me also offered me 10 free laser hair treatments lol

Congratulations on your recent transplant! It must feel like a big relief to get the "hard" part over with.

His website is Dr. Behnam Hair Transplant Specialist | Hair Restoration Doctor

And the clinic is called Dermatology and Hair Restoration Specialists. It's not a factory-assembly line office, but I think his brother deals with Dermatology at their Santa Monica location while he specializes in hair restoration.

I definitely plan to do more research - on him and on other doctors in the area. I'm also open to traveling somewhere else, though I'd prefer not to.

hm he seems ti have a good background which is a great thing. I guess its up to you now to decide do you want someone who seems promising.. or someone that is promising and been doing this for years upon year.. dr hasson was my choice. if you like we could talk over the phone. i live in your area. i would be happy to discuss all of this with you and get you in touch to those people further if thats where you choose to go. Pm me if you want. my flight from lax took me 2 and a half hours. thats pretty manageable. but anyway, spk then

Just checked out his site. Knowing what the top US doctors charge, the $5760 flat fee over 1800 grafts scares me. Hell, Invisalign from a highly-regarded orthodontist in Santa Monica cost me $6,000.

Also, based on some of the patient pics, it looks like he uses lower graft counts for areas where other doctors use more. That's my 2 cents.

Yes, I actually had the procedure with Dr Behnam about 2.5 months ago and am already seeing results. I was really happy with the entire thing - the professionalism, the support, the facility, and the focused attention. I had a FUT done and got almost 2000 grafts (he had conservatively estimated 1500-1700). Following the post-op directions, I was scab-free after a few days, and the grafts fell out after about a month. Very little shock loss if any. I noticed a few hairs a couple weeks ago (2 months in) and now it seems like it's getting better every day. Overall I'd highly recommend Dr Sean Behnam. It's always good to get a second or third opinion, but I personally would go back to him again without hesitation.
