I'd like to keep the hair I have - what's the best combination?

I'm pretty new to the scene and was thinking Propecia and Rogain perhaps? But there's so many different kinds of Rogaine and apparently a cheaper version of Propecia (called Proscar) that I get lost trying to combine a good regimen to keep the hair I have.

Also, if I do decide to get something like Proscar, where can I get it from (I'm in Canada)?

Proscar is 5 mg of Finasteride. It was introduced in 1992 for BPH. They discovered it also stopped/slowed hair loss and sometimes regrew hair. A new 1 mg. dose was formulated and introduced under the name Propecia in 1997. Both Proscar and Propecia are the same drug (Finasteride), just different strengths.

Proscar is generic and Propecia is not. Propecia will usually run you at the very least $60 a month. You can get 30 generic Proscar tablets for $9 at Walmart, then split them into 4 equal pieces. That makes your monthly average about $2.25 a month.

Any doctor can prescribe you Proscar, just tell them why you are asking for it and how you plan to use it. If you would rather order online, although it will cost you more, a lot of people use 4rx pharmacy.

And as far as Minoxidil is concerned, the 5% foam is loads better than the liquid. There are some custom mixed high concentrations sold online, but they are very expensive.

Finasteride 1.25 mg. daily

Avodart 0.5 mg. daily

Spironolactone 50 mg twice daily

5 mg. oral Minoxidil twice daily

Biotin 1000 mcg daily

Multi Vitamin daily

Damn, with all the stuff you put in your hair are you like a negative NW1? :D

I'm in the UK but have visited the US a few times. I don't know if Canada also has 'Wallgreens' but keep an eye out for generic versions of Rogaine Foam in your local drug store. They will probably be cheaper.

I recommend getting Finpecia rather than Proscar, for the simple reason that you can lower the dose to 0.5mg or 0.25mg.

If you have a flaky scalp then use Nizoral shampoo (or cheaper generic) once or twice a week.

I've started on multivitamins (Wellman Tricologic) but can't vouch for their effectiveness...yet

Definitely what RCWest said. Go with Proscar and cut into fourths (or fifths if you want a lower dosage).

Best thing is to get a doc to give you a subscription and get it at a local pharmacy.

I just feel online pharmacy places freak me out and I worry about what I am getting. I sure that there are reputable ones but I could not recommend one.

Hi RCWest,

I was just wondering if you could talk about your experience with liquid minoxidil vs. foam. I have been using generic liquid minoxidil (Kirkland Signature) for about 10 months, and I'm somewhat pleased with the results on the crown and vertex.

Do you think I would benefit from switching to Rogaine foam at this point? I have read a few threads cautioning members against trying too many topicals, shampoos, and other miscellaneous products in a short period of time as one's system might get "shocked" and shedding could result. It's also important to note that I plan on beginning the use of finasteride (thanks for the note about that in this thread), so maybe I don't want to change two parameters at once.

Thanks!

Also, another somewhat related question about finasteride dosage:

After reading the last post in this thread, I think I'll be taking a smaller dosage of finasteride than 1.25mg, at least initially. Can the 5mg proscar tablets be split into sizes smaller than quarters? This may determine whether I buy 5 or 1mg finasteride pills, even though it seems like 5mg pills are the much better value.

Thanks again!
