Hey guys. Just wondering what the general consensus on what constitutes good donor density per square centimeter? Obviously the best calculations would be done post-op by dividing the amount of grafts by the length of the strip. What is average density, what is considered good and well above average?

How so?

 

At anytime, 10% of your hair is in resting phase and not visible, even under magnification, so your apparent density is 10% lower on the basis of what cutters can see and use in your strip transplant.

 

Anyway, I agree with the 80 -100 mark. White, Black, Asian scalps have different average density.

This is something that even I have a hard time figuring out. There are so many different hair types/textures. Straight, thin, curly, wavy, super curly, thick, etc., that the right number is hard to determine. Then it depends on how a person perceives what is the right density for their hairline, right behind it, the midscalp area, the crown, the sides/temples. That all varies based on donor density.

 

I'd like to know the same thing Mickey85 has asked about the donor. I definitely think ethnicity is a big factor to this as well.

 

For reference, Dr. Bernstein's website states, "Since one has 90 to 100 follicular units per square cm of donor tissue"

I didn't say it was the perfect way, only the best method we have now(that I know of). Unless there is some scanning method that detects all hair in all stages that I don't know about.

 

EDIT: Does that mean that if you go through strip surgery(FUT) that 10% of the hairs are not used simply because they are not visible? Anyone(Jotronic, Matt, Spex, Doctors) want to elaborate on this??
