Senior Member Shampoo Posted May 23, 2012 Senior Member Posted May 23, 2012 I was wondering if anyone has used "Stimulen" post-op to help with the healing of their donor area wound? I had a bad cut on my thumb a couple of years ago and the wound specialist gave me what she said they affectionately called "Miracle Dust" because it was magical how well it helped heal wounds and help prevent scars. Although Stimulen is quite expensive it worked great. The kind I used was just a fine dust I would very lightly sprinkle on the healing wound once a day. I was considering purchasing some to use on my donor incision after I have my surgery later this summer. Has anyone ever used Stimulen for this purpose and do any of the doctors that read this message board have any thoughts about it? The Stimulen™ family of collagen products are all comprised of specially prepared polypeptides and modified collagen. The products form a protective gel on the wound bed. This gel protects new cells and tissue from dehydration. All forms provide a moist environment to promote rapid healing. All show moderate absorption and are non-adherent to the wound bed. Senior Member Jotronic Posted May 23, 2012 Senior Member Posted May 23, 2012 I'd be leery of this product, Shampoo. I think it is intended primarily for more superficial wounds. I looked into it a bit and didn't see any reference to using it on bigger wounds such as those in HT surgery. There was mention of wound dressing changes which is not done in HT surgery and with the amount of drying of the wound that the literature warns against I feel it may be something that could harm the wound healing in the end. I could be wrong but this is my gut feeling. The Truth is in The Results Dr. Victor Hasson and Dr. Jerry Wong are members of the Coalition of Independent Hair Restoration Physicians
Senior Member Shampoo Posted May 23, 2012 Author Senior Member Posted May 23, 2012 Joe....you certainly know more about such matters than me. I appreciate your feedback and will follow your and Dr. Wong's advice. With that said I am not sure Stimulen is just for superficial wounds. My thumb wound was very deep, in fact it practically cut the tip/end of my thumb off. I had to visit a wound care clinic several times and see a rehab therapist to regain use of my thumb. Never realized how important thumbs were...lol. I also found the following about Stimulen Collagen: "Stimulen Collagen is indicated for prolonged use (24 hr to 30 days) in the management of wounds including: Partial- and full-thickness wounds Pressure ulcers (stages I-IV) Venous stasis ulcers Diabetic ulcers Partial-thickness burns Acute wounds Abrasions Traumatic wounds healing by secondary intention Donor sites and other surface wounds" Dr. Dow Stough - 1000 Grafts - 1996 Dr. Jerry Wong - 4352 Grafts - August 2012 Dr. Jerry Wong - 2708 Grafts - May 2016 Remember a hair transplant turns back the clock, but it doesn't stop the clock.
Senior Member Jotronic Posted May 23, 2012 Senior Member Posted May 23, 2012 I may know more than you but I don't claim to know everything...yet;) I'll talk to Dr. Wong about this. The problem with these types of products is that we really don't know how they work with HT type of surgical wounds so unless you are willing to be the guinea pig I would ere on the side of caution. I say that lightly but the real world consequences could be very real, and bad. Dr. Wong has his own magic solution anyway so you might not be in need of this product. Like I said, I'll run it by Dr. Wong and get his reaction on the matter.
