I have recently noticed i have been getting small patches of thinned hair on my scalp alopecia like.

What is the best treatment for that? Would it be minoxidil preferably lotion than pills or a brand like Rogaine that includes minoxidil or is it best just to go to My Gp and then be referred to a Hair Specialist/Dermatologist in uk Manchester?

Much Appreciated.

azaya,

It's always a good idea to to be evaluated by a hair loss specialist when experiencing thinning hair. While it's probably androgenic alopecia you are experiencing, there are a number of non-genetic causes for hair loss as well.

Most balding men and women use topical minoxidil. You can go with Rogaine or a generic brand. As long as it contains 5% minoxidil, the effect should be the same. Personally, I prefer using Rogaine Foam. Currently there is no generic foam available.

Your doctor may also suggest Propecia (finasteride).

Best of luck!

So i went to my GP, i was told its male pattern baldness. He printed off what i need to know about it from Patient.co.uk to have a read through and decide for my next appointment.

He mentioned the two treatments would be Propecia (finasteride) And Minoxidil.

Since i am 25 of age he suggested i start with minoxidil foam because he does not want me to suffer from any side effects.

What would your thoughts about this be? and what shoud i do. I am left in confusion?

Thanks

azaya,

He has given you excellent advise. If your hair loss is genetic then the best treatment available is the combination of finasteride and minoxidil.

Regarding side effects, he may be referring to the foam being less irritating. Since Rogaine Foam does not contain propylene glycol it does not tend to irritate the scalp like the liquid does. I've used both regularly and I've never had any scalp irritation. The foam dries quickly and doesn't leave your hair greasy so I prefer it.

I can't comment on prices in the UK but, here in the States, generic finasteride and generic liquid minoxidil are very inexpensive. Rogaine Foam can be quite costly but if you shop around you can find deals.
