Reconstructive hair surgery on a 32-year-old burn victim – 2884 FU – Dr. B. Feriduni

Recommended Posts

This patient was recommended by the burns unit of the Rotterdam‘s hospital and visited our clinic for the first time in December 2008. He suffered from severe scarring (grade III) at the frontal and left part of the scalp and left eyebrow due to a burning incident with sunflower oil.

His health insurance refused to cover the costs of a reconstructive surgery so he became a ‘foundation’ patient.

Treatment plan of the four-step surgical procedure:

1. The first surgical procedure involves the insertion of a skin expander (Silimed skin expander, 600ml) as a preparation for a scalp reduction in the left fronto-temporal region.

2. A scalp reduction in the left fronto-temporal region to reduce the recipient area.

3. A Follicular Unit Strip Transplantation with 2000 FU to reconstruct the left fronto-temporal region and left eyebrow

4. An eyebrow reconstruction with 200 FU to add density to the left eyebrow (in 1-2 Follicular Unit Transplantations)

Performed procedures:

1. The insertion of a skin expander (September 1st, 2009)

2. The expander was already removed after 6 weeks due to a skin infection caused by the staphylococcus aureus bacteria.

A ‘minor’ scalp reduction was performed afterwards (December 12th, 2009)

Due to the infection we were compelled to change the treatment plan of the Follicular Unit Strip Transplantation into 2500-3000 FU instead of 2000 FU

3. A Follicular Unit Strip Transplantation was performed to redesign the left hair line, left temporal points and left temporal region (March 4th, 2010) with :

§ 1046 single hair follicular units

§ 1463 double hair follicular units

§ 375 triple hair follicular units

The patient has suffered both mentally and physically from his burning injuries. He is now at a stage that his hair looks good again and that we only need to add density to his left eyebrow.

He still needs to undergo several facial skin treatments at the burns unit of the Rotterdam’s hospital but he already feels a lot more confident now.

This is truly God-like work! At what density did you transplant at? It resembles full density from all angles.

Finasteride 1.25 mg. daily

Avodart 0.5 mg. daily

Spironolactone 50 mg twice daily

5 mg. oral Minoxidil twice daily

Biotin 1000 mcg daily

Multi Vitamin daily

Damn, with all the stuff you put in your hair are you like a negative NW1? :D

Absolutely amazing turnaround Dr. Feriduni! This patient's scalp hair density looks 100% restored with such a natural looking hairline. Congrats on a case well-done, I'm sure this patient appreciates it more than we can ever say.

Thanks everyone for your compliments on this patient 's result, it has indeed improved his life in a substantial way!

We were gobsmacked when he came to our office for his 8 month check-up and pleased to see the hair transplant turned out to be a great succes as it is always a bit more risky to transplant into scar tissue.

I will certainly post another foundation case in the near future.

To RCWest : the overall density varies between 40-60 FU/cm2

Best regards,

Dr. B. Feriduni

It's an old thread but wanted to bump. Pro bono work like this really strikes a chord. Got a lump in my throat looking at these pictures.

Please continue to post Foundation Cases -- they remind us all that this is not just about vanity. It's about getting your life back.

You are a good man, Bijan Feriduni.

Dr Feriduni is a gem in the HT world. He spent well over 30 minutes with my in a Skype consult with absolutely zero push for a deposit at any time, before, during or after. Great guy, very comforting too.

Wow.... Truly inspirational work. I'm looking up reconstructive cases & found this one. I also suffered from burns on my face, head, & shoulders when I was just a toddler, & have had numerous repair surgeries then (in the Galveston Burn Center when I was little), & a few others over the years. I had been recommended a tissue expander process back in the early 90s when I was a teen, but I didn't really wanna go through with it because it would've looked weird in school, & we weren't really in a financial position to do so. I did have a scar revision surgery on my face then because the scars had expanded from growing up (they looked better when I was a kid), & later had one in 2011... The later one made a remarkable difference & I don't have to use heavy makeup anymore. I also had 2 scar revisions on my right shoulder. They hurt like hell, & there's still some scar tissue, but the shoulder looks a ton better. I finally just had a more modern HT almost 3 weeks ago, & will need another one later to fill in the back. So we'll see... It's very relieving to see cases like this transform to a more positive outcome. The patient looks so much happier in the later photos.
