Graft hairs where they came from to begin with???

This may be a ridiculus question but I have always been curious as to the answer. Doctors currently graft transplanted hair in places on the scalp that seem to be appropriate to the patients age, facial structure, etc.

With magnification, can't the doctors determine where your original (now dead) follicals were and just place the grafts there. If so, this seems to me to be a way of removing the subjectivity of the doctor as to the placement of the hairs. Artistry would not be as much of an issue. Thanks

Dear MD:

In actuality one cannot see the exact site where the original hair emerged. It is an interesting idea but with the techniques available we are able to place hairs (follicular units) quite close together and produce a natural appearance.

I seems to me that if such a thing were possible, you might not want to do it anyway. I wouldn't think that the hairline we had when we were 18 years old would really be natural looking for a much older guy. That's assuming of course that you even had enough donor hair to attempt such a thing. Granted, there are guys out there who have a HT restored hairline like a teenager, but this requires several thousand grafts to accomplish.
