Propecia Question

Docs or anyone else - I have been on Propecia (1mg) for about 1 year and 10 months, hairloss has very much slowed down if not stopped. Especially in the last year. I just started on Rogain 5% (2ml) once daily. The first 10 months, I had no problems at all. For the last year, I think that sexual side effects have been happening but I can't be sure. One night, my errection was not as firm as usual so I started to panic. I think that most people (myself included) who expirience side effects on this drug cause it to happen simply because they are thinking about it. It probubly isn't the drug at all but rather the obsessive worring about being able to perform sexually that causes the percieved side effects. Anyway, I was told that taking 1 mg of propecia every other day instead of daily is just as effective and may decrease the chance of side effects. I have also heard that 0.5 mg every day may have the same effect. Since I have some what stabilized hairloss, would it be appropriate to take one of these routes in hopes of combating perceived side effects? I don't want to quit the drug totally.

It is always difficult to separate psychological effects from physical effects. It is a little unusual for problems to begin after 10 months so I think it is more likely to be mental, but can't be sure. Propecia is out of your blood stream after 24 hours - therefore, after that time any newly produced alpha reductase enzyme can start converting testosterone to DHT (the bad one). After stopping treatment DHT levels return to normal within 7 days. Therefore, the DHT levels would increase roughly 65/6 (or over 10%) by the end of the 48 hrs between pills. This takes into consideration that Propecia lowers the DHT levels 65% and that it is 24 hours before the alpha reductase is unopposed. It would seem more logical to cut back to 1/2 tablet daily than to take 1 tablet every other day, even though there is some debate about this.

I would suggest having some 100mg Viagra tablets handy to help take the worries out of performance. Whether needed or not, they can certainly help take away the anxiety.

Incidentally, the effects of Propecia peak out after 2 years so you still have some improvement to go. I have been most impressed with the results. A lot of people are thrown off however because the results do come slowly and many aren't patient enough to wait for the payoff.
