  1. Hello, I write this in hopes of helping you the reader. I plan to help by showing you how I save money when I travel. If you have a question, I will try to answer as best I can. All prices round trip unless stated. Thesis: Sometimes certain airports are cheaper than others. Background: I'll try to keep this brief but concise, feel free to ask if you don't understand. I needed to fly to India for my HT. My surgery was on the 8th/9th, but I wanted to give myself time to visit Taj Mahal. I started looking for tickets early June and ultimately booked in September 6th. What I learned: Tuesdays are typically the best days to book. New fares get released for Tuesdays (9pm Monday to about 9pm Tuesday PST), and are substantially cheaper/less expensive (there is a difference) than the rest of the week's fares. Skip past "**" to avoid long story ***********Story you may ignore****************** (LAX - Los Angeles Airport - - - SAN - San Diego Airport - - - DEL - Delhi Airport - - - IXC - Chandigarth Airport ) In June I checked tickets. I needed tickets from my location (San Diego, CA) to Chandigarth India. Of course I looked up these tickets first - $2,680. Too much. I checked from LAX to IXC (chandigarth) and it was $1,800. I then looked at SAN to Delhi, $1300, not horrible, but definitely cheaper than the other alternatives. I then looked up LAX to DEL, $780!! I nearly booked this trip. My SO wanted to go, but didn't know if work would accommodate time off (they did). By the time I was ready to book 2 weeks later, the price rose to $940, and I decided to wait. I kept checking, and found that price rose in next two weeks to $1,040. I was upset that I missed out on the cheap fare. I kept checking, but the fares fluctuated only ~$100 at most. In mid June, prices started coming down. I found fares for $850, which are tempting, but I decided to keep waiting. I saw that fares fell to $720, but I held off for a better deal, fares rose the next day to $850. I then noticed that the following Tuesday (one week later) fares went back to $740 or so. I my suspicions were confirmed by Kayak's price over time tool. It showed a consistent drop of ~20% or so 4 times a month, all on a Tuesday. I used this tool to check what the historic low price was, and found that it was ~$550, which became my goal. I watched the prices sink on Tuesday to a low of $600, I nearly pulled the trigger, but held off. I then waited a week or two, and found that prices for the other days fell to $600/580. I was then excited to check the following Tuesday. I checked Tuesday and booked my tickets for $458.31. Patience paid off, and I still had several more months to plan the other aspects of the trip. The down side to these tickets: they were cheap for a reason. I had a 15 hour layover in Beijing (which was awesome - I did a Great Wall and forbidden city tour during this time for $120 per person. BTW, you don't need a visa if you are transiting through China. You can get a transit visa, good for exploring and getting hotels in the China for up to 96 hours with proof of a departure flight.). On the way back, I had a 9.5 hour layover in Beijing which sucked. I didn't leave, but I wasn't in a good condition to leave (less than 96 hours post op). *********************************************************************************************************** So after buying the sick tickets for $460, I had to figure out how to get to the LAX airport. I did a cost analysis. I had options of driving there and paying parking (too expensive for 9 days), flying (couldn't find tickets for less than $80 per person at best one way), and taking the coaster ($39 + $8 fly-a-way shuttle) one way per person. I then looked up rental cars. I found a rental car there and back for $49 one way (+ $12 gas) and $55 back (+ $12 gas). I ended up taking the rental car, since it was the lowest cost option, and got me and my SO to LAX. I then had to figure out a way to Chandigarth. Dr. Bhatti said his taxi could get me for ~$120 each way. It would be a 3 hour drive minimum so I looked at alternatives. I found tickets, which didn't change in price at all from DEL to Chandigarth for $75 per person round trip. Not only was it less expensive, but it was faster and Dr. Bhatti's taxi picked me up and dropped me off for free! So, by changing airports and hopping on a local flight (on a separate itinerary) I got a great deal. I had to do additional planning though. It was definitely worth it for me due to having two travelers. Doubling the travel means that any savings per ticket is doubled as well. I paid: $460 + $75 + $31(49+12 split in two) + $37= $603 to get to Chandigarth for my procedure. No joke, this is less than 4% of the cost for a USA performed procedure. Just think about that for a second. XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX So, what I've done so far is compile an excel file with some data to get you to understand that not only does the location of your airport (and the recipient airport) matter, but time of year matter too! This is a write up I did earlier to help with planning the trip. When you read this, take note that it was for a member who wasn't sure where to go for a HT, but price was a large concern. Before you jump in: Timing could cost you $X,xxx more or less depending on when you travel. Also know the additional travel costs involved. So be smart with your time to get the most value for your $: 1. Create a list of doctors. (You should) Prioritize the doctors who you see yourself using, and then add them to the list. Usually their websites will list a range. I don't recommend "shopping" docs at this point - asking what they will charge. Build your list first, I'll come back to this point. 2. If you're looking for value, look up the Countries you find the surgeons you wish to hire. Use google flights to explore destinations from your Country's airports (plural) to those country airports. Find the cheapest airport for that country, then find the cheapest time to fly - the month or time of year. You're not booking yet, you're only assembling a cost database for the 2-5 countries abroad you've found reputable doctors for. I can help if you don't understand this. 3. Now that you know what you should pay for the travel, find out what lodging and transport looks like in that country. How long do you plan on staying there? Estimate a per-day rate for each country. *Personally, I am passionate about this, but I recommend traveling while you're there. Feel free to ignore this, because it is purely an opinion. 4. Now that you know when the best rates for travel are, plan to book a procedure during that time Next year. It will do four things: A. Allow you to save and ensure you can get that travel rate in the future (I can explain on the booking a travel plan theory later). B. Allow you to establish dialog and communication with a clinic where you feel confident in your doc, and set expectations on the procedure, talk about hairlines etc. C. It will Ensure that your doc is available when you want your procedure done and D. Allow you to save up some money/clear off some credit card balance etc. to afford the procedure/ pay off the airfare after you book it. 5. Now that you have the costs for travel, the narrowed list of surgeons, the open communication with those surgeons, ask the price. Build it into your budget. Travel + expenses while there + HT + Qualitatives (things to do if you travel, idk, but these are "what it's worth to you if all else is equal" among surgeons/total price). Then do your own cost analysis and get the best value. Value = benefits/costs. Know that there exist good surgeons who perform FUE at a cost which is less than other surgeon's FUT. Geography changes costs. VVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVV To help you all, I've started an excel list. I picked what I thought were the best airports to fly FROM and TO. I picked 3 random months, Jul, Sep, Mar2020 and selected the best time during those months with the criteria of at least 7 days. I also looked at Christmas, and the best time to travel using "free" days off most of us get from work/school. When I found the days that were lowest cost, I then checked those days at a later date (on left side) *using the same date* (perhaps alternate days could be lower cost, but I wanted to show some consistency). This is just a couple data points, it is far too time consuming for me to do this unpaid (haha). I used a combination of Google Flights and Kayak. Again, if there's a small description, use the description above for dates/ airport. ^New York^
  2. Me: Hi, I am a 36 year old male from the states & I have made the decision to travel to Turkey to get a FUE Hair Transplant Procedure. I am from Los Angeles however I’m currently living/working in Florida. I am about to board a flight from Orlando to London to Istanbul. History: I have been doing online research for a doctor for almost 2 years on Hair Restoration Network & other resources online. I have been looking into this procedure since probably over 10 years ago when I went to Bosley in Newport Beach to get a consult. Since my 20’s I started experiencing hair loss, not bad but I knew it was coming bc my older brother went bald so I was always preparing. I’ve used a lot of products from finasteride to minoxidil to random stuff and I am currently on nothing. I restarted finasteride but I stopped & I’m done for good. I never experienced any side effects but many people have & they advised against it. Also my logic was why would I need it since the hairs being transplanted were not affected by dht. I know doctors still try to push it when you do the surgery which is why I went back on it however I’m done with it for good. Im not going to mess with my hormones or testosterone levels. Decision: I chose Dr. Ali Emre Karadeniz. I looked at & contacted Dr. Erdogan, Dr. Yaman, Dr. Civas, Dr. Cinik and more. All these doctors are great. This is how I decided on a doctor or narrowed it down which I recommend to all (this website also recommends doctors which I used): go to the -> American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery ABHRS &/Or International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery ISHRS I figured if a doctor is certified by these governing boards that should be an excellent starting point. I also accounted for the costs of doing the surgery in the states, Europe & Asia and it was going to be the most affordable with great results & care in Istanbul. Turkey was the winner for me. Purpose: The reason I am giving my time for this thread is to help other guys like me. Guys like me who read a million reviews & went back & forth. Also I was hoping to get help from this community during my post op. Disclaimer I am not getting paid for this nor did I get a discount. I paid a $250 deposit to book my date Thursday December 6th & I will pay the full rest of the amount Wednesday. Dr. K has different packages to choose from. I did the standard package & I will explain why later. That was a tough decision. This whole process has been difficult. I believe forums like this & posts like this help both the patient & doctor track the progress & results. It’s a good way to keep everyone honest by showing real results not cherry picked ones. And last but not least to keep the provider accountable. I will let y’all know how things go. When I land, the consult, design, procedure & post op.
  3. It seems Turkey has become the destination for hair transplants, but not every Turkish clinic is performing refined procedures. However, we do recommend a select few clinics that are turning out successful results every year. Research is key, never go by price and always go by results. I encourage everyone to take some time out of their day to read this article and share with anyone interested in traveling to Turkey for a procedure. Should You Travel To Turkey For A Hair Transplant
  4. Hi there, New member, first-time poster, longtime lurker on forums like this. I'm 31 y/o, been slowly losing my hair since I was 19. I had shaven my head when I was 18, and as it grew back, I noticed something was off. Of course family and friends all assured me nothing was wrong, but no one knows the hair on someone's head like the person under it. I went to a dermatologist, and sure enough, she said "don't listen to your family, you absolutely have male-pattern baldness." I was devastated, but thankfully was able to get on Propecia from an early age. Fast-forward 12 years. I never regrew hair with Propecia, but I'm sure it slowed it down my hair loss. I had very slow loss for about 5-6 years, at which point I started incorporating Rogaine foam into my daily regimen. The last 3 years though have seen even more accelerated loss, so I switched to Dutasteride. It's hard to say at this point if loss has stopped entirely, but even if I maintained what I have, my hair line is very weak and going out everyday is an entire process of Rogaine + blowdrying + hair product to create the illusion that I'm treading on very thin hair. I don't know if it's my genetics or a result of the decade of Propecia, but I have both a receding hairline and very diffuse loss. On one hand the hairline makes it look like I might have more hair than I do, but I'm worried it also poses a challenge as surgery would mean not just strengthening/filling in my hairline, but also filling in the back and crown. So here's where I'm at: I looked at doctors in Chicago, and have felt very "eh" about most of what I've seen, but kinda figured that's how it goes with transplants these days. But as I read through forums, three doctors caught my attention (if their photos are accurate and testimonials aren't sponsored): Dr. Konior in Chicagoland Dr. Rahal in Toronto Dr. Shapiro in Minneapolis In an ideal world, here's what I'd get out of transplants: * Stronger, lower hairline and temples * Crown and vertex filled in Here are my questions: * What are people's opinions on results I could achieve if I'm looking at FUE? (I don't want a big scar strip in the back of my head) * Given my age (31), where I'm at with thinning, and that I've been on Propecia all these years, would transplant be fighting a losing battle? * Lots of doctors (whose photos I wasn't as impressed with) seem to advocate using Artas. What's the latest thinking on this, and is there any reason doctors still believe "feel of the hand" can out perform the benefits of a machine analysis? * Outside of Konior, I'll have to travel for a consultation, follow up, etc. I make a decent living for a 31 year old, but I'm not rolling in money. How do people travel for these surgeries? Do they have to make multiple trips across the country (or world in some cases) to get FUE? Anyway, sorry for the long post, but this is the closest I've ever come to making the plunge, and any and as much info as possible would be very appreciated. You can see the progression of my hair below (shaved head at 20, hair at 24, unblowdryed at 30, blowdryed with product at 31) (un-blowdryed), and the kind of illusion I can create with it when blowdryed and with product. Thanks so much!
  5. I want to get 700-800 grafts to improve my hairline (NW 1-2). I'm a 30 yr old male and have been on finasteride for 9 years. Never experienced shedding, just taking it as precaution. I've already seen the only legit HT doctor in my country (AUS) and he recommended FUT as the grafts have a higher survival rate. The big question is now whether I should proceed with it OR get FUE in Turkey. Skimming through this forum, it seems like the place to go. I have a few questions now... In general: How does doctor actually know he's harvesting and transplanting the agreed number of grafts? After all most doctors charge by the number of grafts. How does the doctor determine the ideal depth to insert the graft? Is this decided on a patient by patient basis? Science question: When the grafts have removed the scalp, and not yet transplanted how do they SURVIVE? Are they put into a special solution? Does it matter if they are exposed to air/light/temperature? Is there a time limit for them to survive? E.g. should each graft be transferred within 30 minutes? Given this situation is there preference for FUT or FUE from a scientific point of view? Regarding FUT: When do doctors use sutures or metal staples? Metal stapels is a big turn off for me. Is it common practice to position the scar (donor area) into a natural skin fold on the back of the head? HOw long should I refrain from exercise post op? Could I train arms and legs earlier since it doesn't impact the donor scar? Regarding FUE (in Turkey with recommended docs): I'm afraid of traveling overseas for a FUE HT, only to find out that the doctor won't proceed with it because my hair is not suitable for FUE. In that case would the doctors proceed with the FUT alternative? What are the average rates for FUE per graft? From what I've seen the FUE donor area merely looks like a bad rash for the first few days post-op. Is this correct? Regarding traveling to a doctor overseas: Since the initial consultation is impossible, given the distance, will the number of grafts and other details be determined by email? How does this work? My situation: Is FUT too extreme for less than 1000 grafts? Or would you recommend it because the graft survival rate is lower. Either way, could I just use my existing fringe to cover up scabs during the first few weeks of the recovery area? Thank you for any responses in advance!
  6. I know a lot of people that undergo HT's usually travel far away and take flights to get there and back. When traveling after HT, do you wear a hat or something else to cover your head? I had a bad experience one time with this and I must say it probably was the most embarassing moment of my life. I could hear security saying to take off belts, shoes, hats, etc. I tried to act like I didn't hear them but one of them asked me to take my hat off. There was a hot girl in front of me and people behind me of course. After I went through metal detector one of the security checked out my bandages and asked what happened. I told him I underwent surgery but didn't go into details. When I arrived to my gate I went to grab something to eat and what do you know, the same hot girl was in line too...just embarassing. I'm scheduled for another and hopefully last HT in November. I considered driving to avoid any embarassment but it's all the way in Canada and I'm in Texas. Any tips??
  7. Hello All, this is my first post (hopefully of many). I have been researching what was best for me, in regard to where/when to have my transplant, for about 3 years now. After much searching, based on quality of work, professionalism of staff, and price, I think I have decided on Dr. Brett Bolton, Age Defying Surgical Center in Fort Lauderdale, FL. Nonetheless, that was not meant to be a plug but give background info. Before Dr. Bolton, I was set on possibly traveling overseas for a transplant from Alvi Armani, but the cost was out of my range (being 24) and they seemed so sales-ey. After being on the site today, I was impressed with some ppls posts on Dr. Bisanga (Spain) and Dr. Keser (Turkey). Their sites and work were def impressive, however Spain and Turkey???? For any Americans, or otherwise, who have traveled outside of the country for a surgery, how did the prices compare (less or more than the States)? I am only looking to pay about $7,000 (including travel) for my transplant. I would also prefer a Dr that didn't charge per graft (Yes, there are some out there.. ie. Dr Bolton). Any advice on any of the Surgeons I named, and flying out of country (prices, relatability, etc) for a transplant?? Thanks
  8. Hi I live in northern California and I am considering traveling to a good doctor within USA for HT. How safe is it to travel by flight the next day after the HT to come back home. A local doctor that I had consultation with said that first 3 days of postop are very important. He told me one should take proper rest and especially be in a recliner or on a bed with chin upright position to avoid swelling. I guess a lot of people in this forum travelled to have their HT. Please let me know your expeirence and give me some postop tips for a successful HT.
