Advice for Hair Loss Sufferers Considering Hair Transplant Surgery

  1. Hi, My name is Akash, I am from India, I had a HT surgery (9weeks back). I just wanted your honest, clear cut opinion about a query I have and it would be very kind if you can spare a few minutes to respond to my query. During my surgery (9 weeks back) I was told by the doctor that I have a very hard skin and there is a popping effect (when they were trying to insert one graft the surrounding grafts were coming out), and after 9 weeks now I can see that most of my grafts (specially in the temporal area) have neither grown nor shed. I am very worried as I read that shedding normally occurs after 1-5 weeks of the transplant, and also heard from a youtuber that if transplanted hair doesn't grow or shed within 3-4 months then they are as good as dead and new hair won't come out from them. Please can you confirm this?, if it is true then my transplant most probably has failed. And, is there any way to soften scalp skin, in case I go for a 2nd transplant in the future. Regards, Akash
  2. What do you guys think? It seems that were so concerned about shedding, that we forget that everyone sheds hair. Thoughts? Is Shedding Hair Normal Or A Sign Of Hair Loss?
  3. This is 4 weeks out from 2000 grafts with Cooley in the front sides. This amount of shedding is normal, right? Just want to make sure the testosterone supplement (Nugenix) isn’t the cause. Been in that about a week, but taking 1.25mg of finasteride 3 times week. Just need some reassurance :)
  4. I get this question literally every week, but the more experienced members will know that this is completely normal. However, this is a good topic to share with friends or people who are interested in having a hair transplant, because the majority of people are under the impression that the hair just keeps growing after it is implanted. The truth is, hair shedding is part of the process. Hair Transplant Shedding Is It Normal?
  5. I'm about a month post op and just wondering if this photo is showing shedding. The first photo is 2 weeks post op and the 2nd is from today, 4 weeks. I was thinking that the shed would all happen at once, not in patches. So please let me know if this looks like a shed or something else. Also, I know that shedding happens from 2-6 weeks post op, but how long does the actual shedding go on for on average? 1-2 weeks?
  6. Hello. I have been using propecia for 23 months and foligain liquid minoxidil 5% once a day at night for 6 months and it has stopped my hair loss and given me great regrowth as well. i'm strongly considering adding the foligain foam minoxidil 5% within my morning rutine so that i get the recommended doses of 2 times a day, foam in the morning and liquid at night. so my questions are. can i safely use both the foam and liquid alongside side each other? do i have to worry about potential shedding when adding the foam to my daily rutine? any help will be greatly appreciated, thank you.
  7. I have had FUE procedure 18 days ago. Some hairs have shed, firstly when the scabs came off, but also a few every now and again when i pass my hands through my hair. But there are lots of remaining ones, which seem to be growing in length. I have read that this may be a good sign, if hairs immediately start growing without shedding phase. Do hairs grow before they shed? or do the hairs that shed, stay the same length then shed? Or is it just the hairs detaching from the follicle gives them some extra length?? Obviously i will see in due course, but I'm in the 'waiting phase'. crystal ball please! https://www.realself.com/question/big-indian-ny-my-transplanted-hair-started-growing-shedding
  8. Hey guys, First post on this forum, but long time user. I'm 25 an had a transplant with Dr. Rahal in July of this year. First and foremost, the experience and care and post-op care from Dr. Rahal's staff has been nothing short of amazing. The patient care team has responded to every one of my questions promptly and reassured me every step of the way. I'll upload an immediate post op photo and pre op photo and will upload more monthly progress photos. I'm at 4.5 months right now. My main concerns right now are a few spots of patchiness in the donor (though I was made aware i have slightly below average donor density) and the recipient area is a little sparse (though I understand 4.5 months is early days). As for medicinal treatments, I can't say I've ever had any tremendous regrowth success with anything. I always had a higher forehead and never head a perfectly shaped norwood 1, but noticed the recession around 19/ or 20. I tried rogaine for about 9 months at the time which just seemed to induce irritation, dandruff, and some minor vellus hair that weren't cosmetically significant. Nothing changed until I was 24 and after a stint on prednisone for asthma related issues (not sure if this contributed or not),but I lost a bit of ground in the temples though everything else remained thick. This sent me into a bit of a panic wherein I tried anything I could get my hands on: Krill oil, vitamins, topical coconut oil (which did have a little bit of a thickening effect if nothing else felt therapeutic), and lasers... There's not a ton of concrete information on lasers across the forums, but there is a ton of anecdotal evidence so I can throw my experience into the pot and you can make of it what you will: Migraines and lifeless fried hair. This is no exaggeration and I feel it's important to share this information. I used one of the homemade helmets recommended by another forum. The headaches were not psychosomatic; they were very real and persisted about 2-3 days after every 20 minute treatment. I dropped it during January of 2015 after months of no results. Others have claimed results through lasers and I'm not claiming they haven't, this is simply my experience with them. Propecia: Started in February of 2015. Caused the most temporal shedding of any treatment I've tried. Prior to propecia I was probably a Norwood 2 and a month on it brought me to a 2.5 closing in a Norwood 3. This is not to add more fuel to the fire of propecia fear mongering. I've never once experience any sexual side effects and the rest of my hair did actually thicken up a bit, but the temples went on an extended vacation starting in March. I did reduce my dosage and slowly over the course of 2015 regained a bit of hair. My question is this though: During the month of October early November, I experience some pretty early growth that pretty nicely framed my face. Then I added minoxidil foam and regenepure DR and loss a fair bit of recipient density shortly after. So either one of those is the culprit or both. I know Spex has written about Nizoral 2% sometimes negative effect on transplanted hair and that the shed is temporary. Attached is one post op pic and a pre op pic. More photos will follow.
  9. Hi, I am new to this forum, I hope somebpody can help me... I am 29 year old female and I have had a bad experience with Rogaine/Minoxidil 5%. Long story short: I basically had no major reason for being treated with it, was just scared because I happened to have a lot of hair breakage after some salon treatment done poorly. After looking at me at the time, the clinic said I had signs of genetic female pattern hair loss, like a receding line and wider parting around the crown area. I was scared to death and started the treatment. Was on minoxidil for 3 weeks, then around that time the massive horrible shedding started and it scared me so much I cut my hair short to hopefully notice less, the burning feeling on my scalp was horrible, it was all flakey and dry as well. I stopped because it was stressing me out of my mind and complained to the clinic because I had been assured the shedding would only be barely noticeable and it was all but. I was given the money back... Looking back now I never needed the treatment to begin with, as my hairline has always been like that, even when I was younger. I have been off the treatment since Jul 30th, so about a month now. Regardless of more hair growing back, the shedding still hasn't stopped and what worries me the most is the persisting itchy/stinging/burning feeling on my scalp... I read that the shedding can last months and I am trying to brace myself and be strong until it stops, but what about the scalp? Is it normal that it still stings like this after a month? Can you please help me? I am terrified of going to some clinic again and make it even worse. Please reassure me. Thank you in advance...
  10. Hi, The same question may have been asked before but I did not see Dr. in that thread. I really appreciate if any Dr. can answer my question. I had a hair transplant surgery about 5 months back (my hairloss blog link can be found below). I am applying Minoxidil since then and taking finpecia and hairbless ever since. The results have been very good so far and I do see new hairs. However, since last couple of weeks, some of the hairs have suddenly started shedding. Everytime I shampoo my hair, applying minoxidil or run my hand thru it, a bunch of strands are sticking to my palm ( 30-40+ of them approx per day). Is it normal? I read previous thread but those answers are bit confusing. My grafts had shed during the expected effluvium phase during the 1st month post surgery. I thought 5 month is the time when they start to grow back and not shed! Interestingly, not all grafts had shed earlier- could it be that the ones that hung on are shedding now. I am not entirely convinced as some of the grafts shedding now are thin and small - so its got to be the newly sprouted ones. I spoke to my Dr. and he said it may be shock loss. Please share your thoughts. I would really appreciate it. Regards, Hairsufferer2016 P.S: Link to my blog: Hair Restoration Websites
  11. Hi to everybody here again! As you can see from what I posted on this forum before, I started minoxidil and finasteride 1.25mg every day last june, and I had initiall shedding, a lot, a lot of shedding, and a lot of dandruff and itching problems caused by minoxidil in first two months of tratment. Back then, a member ''HARIRI'' gave me advice here to use shampoo Sebamed to treat my dandruff and that shampoo really helped me and my dandruff and itching problems gone rapidly (thank you HARIRI if you are reading this). After 4 months of treatment I've got some crazy great regrowth, and I was extremely happy with that. But, in middle of december my hair started to shed again, and it is still shedding very much. I have lost lot of my gains but my hair is still way better than the baseline. I read that it is very common that second shedding happens, but I did not find much people posting if the hair returns back stronger after second shedding or not, so if any of you had similar experience I would like to tell me how it was? Also, the thing that is very rare to me is that my dandruff and itching problems returned also with shedding. Is that okay or is a bad sign that meds are not working well anymore? Also to add that I haven't changed anything in my regimen, the shampoo that I use is also the same. Sorry for the long post, but you can imagine that I am vorried about this a lot. Any response is highly appreciated. Thanks.
  12. Hi guys, I started shedding a lot around 2 years ago and after some reading around decided to take 1.25mg Proscar (Dr Edgar). Fast forward a year, my shedding has not stopped. The meds has had no effect. Shedding is still the same as before, if not more. I was wondering if it was worth taking it if i'm not benefitting. After a year of use, surely by now there would be some decrease in shedding, if of course my body would allow it. At this point in time, i'm not concerned with regrowth but just want the shedding to stop. I'm not feeling any side effects but I don't want to be taking it unnecessarily. Do you think I should maybe switch to Fin? Any advice would be welcome.
  13. Hi Everyone, I am 23 years old and have started using minoxidil about 3 weeks ago due to the thinning in frontal area. After 3 weeks of continuous twice daily usage I noticed that I had no shedding at all. My hairs were as normal as they were before. I read about some side effects it can cause to your face and hence decided to stop using it. So my question is that will stopping minoxidil only after 3 weeks of usage and no shed will cause dread shed for me in near future? Is 3 weeks of usage too long to suffer a dread shed after quitting. Please help.
  14. Hello, I received my first transplant from Dr. Dorin in New York City in July 2014. nearly 2400 grafts total including the crown, temples and front hairline. Within 3 months I was regrowing hair and as of May I had nice coverage and a noticeable, natural difference in all areas. In the photos you can see the pre-op receded areas and the line that they transplanted up to in the front and then the fully grown transplanted hair in May. However since June I began to lose some hair only in the temple areas, as you can see in the last two photos. Not original hair in back of the transplanted hair, but clearly some of the transplanted hair had shed. The doctor confirmed that even lines/strips of healthy grafts can be seen on my scalp next to scalp lines with no grafts where the grafts used to be. There is no scalp issue or other visible reason for the shedding grafts. My doctor wanted me to take a blood test for any deficiencies or issues that may account for this. It is possible the hair will grow back since I had positive fast growth in all transplanted areas, or I may begin to lose more of the transplanted hair. It is frustrating since I spent good money on this plus I would want another transplant if I experience hair loss in other areas. I wanted to know if anyone else has experienced loss of transplanted hair (not in the first three months which is normal) but long after the grafts have taken root and successfully regrown. If so what happened and what did you do about it? Thanks so much
  15. Hi all I started using Nizoral about 6 weeks ago, and I have been experiencing a lot of shedding of hair and itching. I have been using the shampoo (1 %) 3-4 times a week, for 6-7 minutes. I guess I found out the hard way that its too often/too long, and I've dropped the dosage to twice a week for about 3 minutes. There is still some itching, less than before though, and the shedding of hair is not as bad - there is still some though. I read somewhere about some shampoos that if I use it on days where i dont use Nizoral, could ease the itching. I've tried to find the thread, but without any luck. Can anyone help? Also - and perhaps more importantly - I've heard that this shedding period is normal, and that the same happens with minoxidil. Is it the same hairs that are targeted/shed? If I were to start on Minoxidil also, wouldn't I experience all the initial shedding again? Thanks in advance :-) PS: I use finasteride everyday, and have done it for the past 8 years. It has definitely worked by slowing the hairloss considerably down, but I've reached a point where it isnt enough any longer, thats why I started with the Nizoral. Oh, and I'm 35 btw (dont know if thats relevant to the questions)
  16. Hello all, After getting a second hair transplant last year (repair), over the course of the year 2014 my hair loss got gradually worse, to the point where I was no longer able to take finasteride for several months due to brain fog at the end of the year. I made a commitment at the start of 2015 to take control and not let it get any worse. So I got back on finasteride, switched brands from Finpecia to Dr Reddy's Finax and have added 5-HTP to my routine for serotonin levels. So far this seems to be working . I also bought Dr Reddy's Dutas, which I have started taking the last 3 weeks (once a week, finasteride other 6 days). I have been using 15% Dual-Gen (no PG) around the same time as restarting finasteride, initially for use in morning and night, but now just once a day in morning, and in the last week have added RU solution to my routine for use at night. The last week or so my hair has become noticeably thinner on the crown area, and I can see a lot of hair coming out in one go during washing. I believed shedding due to Dutasteride would occur later and not this early. Should I continue my routine and ride it out? Any additional comments welcome. Thank you!
  17. Hi, Im in desperate need of advice or any piece of information. Im hoping that someone on here has the same experience. I used minoxidil 5% around the end of feb 2014 after noticing that i had little difused thinning. After 3 weeks, i decided to stop using it because my scalp was itching so much and i started to lose so much hair which i assume is the initial shedding. It's already the end of may (two months after i stopped using minoxidil) and still my hair is shedding. i lose about 80-100 hairs per day since i started minox. i lost about 30% of my hair thickness since i started, my ponytail thickness is significantly thinner. And my hair gets easily oily now, scalp more visible. Does the initial shed usually continue this long even if i only used the product for 3 weeks? How long should I wait for the shedding to stop? Is there any way i could stop the shedding?
  18. Hello everyone, Last week I posted about shaving 2-3 weeks post op (with an electric clipper). Now I have some other question/thread to share with you: We all know the rule is that in the first month after your HT you're going to shed most of the new implanted hairs as they entered in the telogeon phase. This is being true for me now I'm close to my 4th week post op. But! the remaining hairs that haven't fallen down don't seem to grow as fast as the non transplanted ones. I mean, some hairs are not falling but they aren't growing in length either. They just remain short. Is it normal or a matter of concern? What is expected to happen with them? At last, I have noticed two implanted follicles that have attached to the scalp a litle black point in the root. But I have not scabs at all as I've been showering properly since day 10th. Do you know what is this? Thanks
  19. Hey guys I'm now on day 10 post op. I've noticed since day 8 scabs are flaking off with hair in them, I'd say I've lost about 20-30 hairs like this. The Dr advised that shedding would start between 2nd/3rd week and I'm worried it's started too early. Also, yesterday, a couple of scabs fells off after gentle massage from washing that bled slightly. I've checked the graft sites, but they still have the hair poking out through them. Generally, I'm still slightly pink and some of the graft sites feel tender when washing. I had my head shaved and I'm disappointed that my crown area looks much thinner than it did before the shave. It just doesn't seem to be growing back as quick. I had 200 grafts placed there at last minute, so wonder if this is shock loss? Sorry to have a moan...think it's post op blues :-(
  20. I am sure somebody has asked this before, but I thought I would ask as well. Is it bad to start Saw Palmetto at this point (2 years after HT) along with Propecia and Minox? Really don't want to go through another "shed" from the Saw Palmetto if it starts to work. Anybody try this regimen? Did it work or is it a waste of time and hair?
  21. I had my second transplant back in August 2013. This time I experienced significant (in my eyes) shock loss mainly in the areas in close proximity to the newly grafted area. Using Nanogen fibres managed to get me through this disturbing time, and i noticed it starting to thicken up. The new grafts came through which helped to thicken it all up, but in the last few weeks I've noticed another session of shedding similar to last time in quantity. I realise 50-100 hairs fall out each day, but I'm noticing hairs falling each time I wash it, towel dry it, and then hairs on my fingers when I apply Minoxidil Foam. I contacted my surgeon to ask whether it could be due to taking Doxycycline antibiotics but he says it shouldn't be. So I contacted the surgeon's in house trichologist who says that after a period of shock loss, the new and recovering hairs can take time to get back to a normal cycle. Therefore, I might see 2 or even 3 sessions of shedding, each one slightly less noticeable than the last. I'm incredibly worried that after 2 transplants to the front area I'm suddenly having accelerated hair loss, despite using minoxidil every day. My hair loss has been pretty much settled for a good few years by the way. 7 My question is, is my trichologist correct? Anyone who has had shock loss, did you have another 1, 2 or 3 shedding sessions before recovering? I'm into month 7-8 now after the transplant and thought I would be really happy now with how it is progressing. Instead I'm really very anxious, depressed and upset. Any feedback or advice would be greatly appreciated.
  22. Hi, I am noticing very heavy hair shedding during 10th month of my ht. not only transplanted hair but native hair all over the head are also shedding. Its really depressing to see. Attached are pics 1st pic pre op 2nd pic 9 months 3 pic almsot 11 months What can be reasons for this.
  23. Hello, i have a few questions which couldn't be answered with searching forums and the internet: 1.Could the sickness have damaged the grafts? I had fever (38,5°C) after a FUE hairtransplant 4 days post OP for 3 days but no high blood pressure because my eyes blacked out when standing up which indicates low blood pressure which i have all the time but this time its a bit stronger because my body was weakend from the flu. 2. Is it normal that some transplanted hair don't grow few weeks post op and will they still grow?? Im 3 weeks post op and i've noticed that some hairs didnt grow at all and others grew normally. Some hairs fell out already while removing the scabs 2 weeks post op but 60% is still there. 3. Can i use pure aloe vera mixed with water on the recipient area to speed the healing prozess (especially the redness)? 4. Can i buzz cut all my hairs including the transplanted one, so it looks even (3 weeks post op)? Thx for all answers in advance and sorry for the long post and my bad englisch. Greetings from germany!
  24. Hello everyone, I've been searching through hair loss forums since I started noticing my hair loss. From what I have read, it seemed like Propecia and Minoxidil were the best non-invasive solution available. I decided to go with it, especially since I read on the BBC that having a hair transplant before the age of 25 or before you have tried medications is not generally the best course of action. At first, I was taking Minoxidil (5%) but after a while it didn't really help and my hair was falling, at a slower rate, but still fast enough. So I started taking Propecia (1 mg) and Minoxidil (5%) since early April if I remember correctly. During the first week, I noticed a sudden disappearance of libido that was rather strange; I even tried watching porn and it didn't help. However, this only stayed for 3 days and afterwards everything was fine. Then came another possible side effect as I became extremely irritable to an extent I never had in my life. It was weird, but it only remained for a couple of days as well and then went off on its own. Finally, I noticed a huge comeback in my sex drive that was very strong, however, this went away gradually on its own and now I don't have any symptoms that could be labeled as Propecia-related. What has been bothering me, however, is the massive shedding I have had since I started the medication. I have gone through a shedding so severe that I have gone from a barely noticeable hair loss to losing almost 60% or 70% of my hair. Now, I'm on my way to NW3A and I was an NW1 at the beginning of my "treatment." It is causing me great distress as I have never seen myself like that, I have never seen my scalp in the mirror before and now it's very easy to notice it. Yet I am still taking Propecia and Minoxidil as I have read that the shedding is only natural and should wean off after 3 or 4 months. What I am scared of is that the shedding will only stop after I have no more hair on my head. I see an average of 30 to 40 hairs per day in my hands and if it continues this way I'm afraid I'll be slick bald soon enough. Just today I read about something called a reflex-hypoandrogenic reaction to Finasteride that may result in a faster permanent hair loss and it's better to stop taking Finasteride all along if that is the case. I can say I have an itchy scalp, but I live in a hot country and it doesn't itch that much. Nevertheless, it was noticeably itchy a month ago. I don't know what to do, should I stop all along or is this just a normal shedding and I'd better continue taking the medication. I really need your help guys. tl;dr Losing lots of hair (from 70% to 35%) on Finasteride and Minoxidil in 3 months, don't know whether to stop or not. Could be reflex-hyperandrogenicity. Need Help.
  25. Hi Everyone, Just joined (finally). This forum has been the biggest help the past few years. Its through it I found my superb Surgeon Dr Path in Bangkok. Ok, quick simple question. There is a lot of mixed responses when I search it. I just want to ask if its completely normal for hair to start shedding at around day 8? I am 10 days post Op and noticed first shed of a transplanted hair around Day 7/8 and now each day am seeing more hair shed when I wash. Have been following all the right instructions and have been extremely gentle when washing. Have had no head bumps, no bleeding, all has been so great post op. I have just read on many different web sites that the transplanted hair usually doesn't shed until after 2 weeks. I searched at least 15 different post care instructions from many transplant clinics all over the world and they said typically it starts at 2 weeks. If someone could please help put my over thinking mind at ease. I am sure its OK as no "bulbs" or "grafts" have come out just tiny hairs shedding. Long question shortened - Is shedding transplanted hair only after one week/8 days too soon? Many thanks T
