Advice for Hair Loss Sufferers Considering Hair Transplant Surgery

My Story

Found 36 results

  1. This patient is a 28-year-old male who we performed 1591 grafts to the frontal hairline 3.5 years ago. He initially had a hair transplant at another practice which had failed to deliver the desired result of a solid hairline. He felt many of the grafts did not grow, and that he had some irregularity to the hairline. Examination at the time revealed large spaces in the frontal hairline and poor density. It did appear that he had poor growth from the prior procedure. Additionally, there were several 2-hair grafts in the hairline which were giving an unnatural appearance. We transplanted 1591 grafts into the very frontal hairline and frontal zone. The surgery was very meticulous as I did not want to disturb any existing hairs in the hairline at the same time packing the area with new follicular unit grafts. The surgery was highly successful and the patient has been extremely happy since. He was recently in the Portland area and visited us. He has been on oral and topical medications to help minimize hair loss. At this point, I only recommended that he maintain his medical therapy as his hairline and overall scalp hair looks amazing. Next time he returns to Portland, he said he will visit the Gabel Center for an update. Dr. Steven Gabel Portland/Seattle Gabel Center
  2. This patient is a 53-year-old male who desired to enhance his frontal hairline. He has excellent density throughout the rest of his scalp. The frontal-temporal angles had always bothered him with the recession he had. We transplanted 1600 ultra-refined follicular unit grafts into the frontal hairline in a high-density technique at our Portland Hair Transplant Clinic as depicted in the photographs. He is extremely happy with the results as shown in the video.
  3. This patient is a 31- year old male who desired to restore the frontal hairline and frontal zone of his scalp. He is now 6 months following a hair transplant utilizing the follicular unit extraction (FUE) method for donor hair. He had 2084 grafts transplanted. The recipient sites are made with custom-cut blades, and the grafts are inserted by Dr. Gabel and his staff. The patient will return for his 1-year progress at which time we will post his results.
  4. This patient is a 38-year old male whose main concern were the deep front-temporal recessions. The patient had 3872 grafts placed via the strip harvest method. The photographs and video show the 7-month results after the second procedure. [img}https://gabelcenter.box.com/shared/static/vo4nybmwtq0dpl16yfjzw75cpozcxtu4.jpg[/img]
  5. This patient is a 39-year female who had deep frontotemporal recessions. She had always wanted to be able to wear her hair back in a ponytail, but since she had deep frontotemporal recessions, she covered that area up with hair. We transplanted 2342 grafts into the frontotemporal angles. The photographs show her results at the 6/7-month point which has already been amazing for her. He is wearing her hair back, and looks forward to continued growth.
  6. This 35-year old patient desired to thicken the hairline and frontal scalp. Even though he has hair in that area, we designed a conservative hairline following his current pattern, and increased the density throughout the frontal hairline. The 12-month photographs show the excellent growth he has had in the frontal zone. Notable, however, is that his hair loss is continuing in the crown and he has lost some density. We are now trying some other options to help maintain the genetically susceptible hair in the posterior mid-scalp and the crown. He will return in 12 months for his 2-year results.
  7. This patient is a 32-year-old male who desired to restore his frontal hairline and scalp. He is on medications to help maintain his current pattern. The patient had 2600 grafts placed into the frontal hairline and frontal portion of the scalp. The photographs show his before procedure and 6-month progress. He is extremely happy with the results thus far and we plan to show his 1-year results when he returns for follow up.
  8. This patient is a 57-year-old gentleman who desired to enhance his frontal hairline. He feels that he has had a slow recession of hair in the frontal region. He did not want to bring the hairline down significantly and wanted to increase the density to make his hairline fuller. The before and after photographs are presented side by side to compare the 18-month results. The patient is extremely happy with the results as it has defined the frontal hairline and produced a more youthful appearance for him.
  9. This 59-year-old patient desired to have his frontal hairline redifined and filled in, and also increase the density of his crown. The photographs show his before and 1-year results in which approximately 1600 follicular unit grafts were placed in the frontal area of his scalp, and 1200 grafts were placed into his crown. This patient lives close by the office so we plan to have him back over the next year to follow his progress and show his 2-year final results.
  10. This patient is a 41-year-old male who desired to increase the hair density in the frontal scalp via the FUE method. He wanted the option in the future to keep his hair short. He says that he is a good healer, but since he wanted the short haircut option, the FUE method of follicular unit transplantation was performed. 2168 grafts were extracted and transplanted into the frontal hairline and frontal scalp regions. The 6-month postoperative results are displayed. It shows excellent growth of the transplanted grafts. The patient stated that his hair started growing several months ago and continues to thicken up and the density is improving monthly. He feels it is completely natural and has no issues with anyone recognizing that he had a hair transplant performed since the frontal hairline is so natural appearing. Since the patient is only 6-months out from the procedure, he still has 20 % - 30 % more growth expected. He plans to return for his 1-year and 1.5-year post-operative progress checks. A video will be added shortly.
  11. This patient desired to increase the density of the hair in his beard and mustache. He said he was unable to grow significant hair on the cheek area, the sideburns, the chin region, or the top of the mustache. The lower portion of his beard grew well, but the hair was lacking in the upper aspect of his beard. The overall goal of the transplant was to increase the density and fullness of the facial hair in the regions were hair was lacking. The patient had 1891 follicular unit grafts placed into the beard as shown in the immediate post-operative photographs. For facial hair transplants, Dr. Gabel makes all of the sites, and places 100% of the grafts. The exact positioning, hair direction, and angle that the hairs are placed are absolutely critical for a good result with facial hair transplants. Dr. Gabel has a particular interest in facial hair transplants as he has extensive fellowship training in facial plastic surgery and is board certified in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery. The photographs were put together by the patient to show the progression from the preoperative phase, immediately after the procedure, 10 days, and at 6 month. The patient was recently in for his 6-month post-operative visit and his results have been absolutely outstanding. He is extremely happy with the results as he feels the hairs are growing in as he desired, and the results are very natural. The patient will be returning for his 1-year post-operative visit at which time we will post his progress. .
  12. This patient is a 35-year-old gentleman who had a hair transplant several years ago with another physician in the Northwest. He was very disappointed for two reasons: the density that was achieved was not near what was promised, and secondly, the hairline design was too aggressive. His main goal was to increase the density in the frontal half of the scalp, make the frontal hairline more natural, and address the crown at a later date. 2490 follicular grafts were placed 5-months ago into the frontal half of the scalp. The photos are 5-months after surgery which demonstrates excellent growth of the transplanted hairs so far. He will experience more growth and maturation of the follicles over the next year. He is using Toppik on the crown to help conceal balding in that area, but there was no Toppik in the frontal half of his scalp when the photos were taken.
  13. This patient from the Los Angeles area desired to have his hairline and frontal area of his scalp transplanted to restore his hair in those areas. 3655 follicular unit grafts were transplanted into the frontal hairline region in one session. The photographs demonstrate his appearance before the transplant and at his one-year follow up visit. Additionally, we included close-up photographs of the hairline and transplanted area in the frontal region of the scalp. The patient is on finasteride and minoxidil which are helping to maintain his natural hair – in fact, he has had an excellent response to the medications which have thickened his hair. The patient is very active in sports and is extremely satisfied with the results he has obtained as he feels he has gained a more youthful appearance by framing his face with the transplanted hairs and boosted his overall confidence.
  14. This patient is a 44-year-old gentleman who desired a subtle improvement to his eyebrows. He wanted only a few grafts placed on the outside and central body of his eyebrows to give a mild increase in density. He has always had sparse density on the lateral aspect of his eyebrows so he did not want anything drastic which would too noticeable as he is a public figure. We transplanted approximately 50 grafts to each eyebrow to give it only a subtle change. As seen on the postoperative photos, the eyebrows are slightly thicker but very natural. I am presenting this case as an illustration that each patient has unique situations and desires – and to illustrate that not every patient needs a huge number of grafts to accomplish their goals. If we were going to do a full eyebrow transplant for a big change in density, we could have transplanted several hundred grafts on each side; however, that was not what the patient desired. He only desired a very mild improvement so transplant would be undetectable. Since he always had sparse hair density on the lateral eyebrows, and he is in the publics eye, he did not want anything that would indicate he had a transplant. These photographs are 1.5 years after the transplant and the patient is extremely happy. It satisfied his goal to increase the density in a subtle and effective fashion. 15. This patient is a 40-year-old patient who had 2548 grafts placed in the frontal hairline 2.5 years ago. He desired to have the frontal hairline restored and to increase the density in the frontal scalp. The photos and video show the results and the patient’s satisfaction and enthusiasm he has received from the procedure. 1-Year after surgery Video 2.5-Years after surgery Video
  16. This patient is a male-to-female transgender patient who presented to feminize her frontal hairline. The results show her 1-year result after 3524 follicular unit grafts were placed in the frontal hairline and frontotemporal angles. At the 1-year mark, she is extremely happy with the results as she is able to wear her hair down and style it in a very feminine manner. She has also enhanced the appearance of her hair by coloring it.
  17. This patient is a 52-year-old gentleman who had a hair transplant 2 years ago. He had 2462 grafts placed in the crown and right fronto-temporal angle/mid-scalp region. The right fronto-temporal area was important to him as he parts his hair from right to left. He desired an age appropriate hair transplant to improve the density in crown, but also to help cover the part on the right. He was very adamant that he did not want the density of a teenager, but he wanted to improve the density in the areas as described above. Overall the patient is extremely happy, as final results have accomplished the goals that he desired. At this point, he is continuing on medical therapy and has not plans for a transplant in the future. I have asked him to return in one year for a follow up.
  18. This patient is a 42-year-old gentleman who wanted to reestablish and thicken up his frontal hairline. He had been slowly losing his hair several years ago, but since starting on medications for hair loss, the loss has stabilized. The patient had 2478 grafts placed 9 months ago into the frontal hairline and frontal zone of his scalp. We also are presenting very close up macro photographs of the frontal hairline, which demonstrate high-density graft placement in the frontal zone. Overall, the transplanted hairs are growing very well and the patient is extremely pleased with the results so far.
  19. This patient is a 55-year-old gentleman who had 2 transplants with us over a 2-year timespan for a total of 5074 grafts to the frontal and midscalp zones. He is frequently on the forums with the username of Biz. When we met over 2 years ago, we had lengthy discussions about the eventual outcome as his hair is thin and he had extensive hair loss as a NW 6/7. At the initial meeting, I was optimistic he would have a nice result, but I cautioned him that the result would be “thin” based on the amount of scalp that would need to be covered and his hair characteristics. He recently send me some updated photographs 8 months after his last transplant which demonstrate very nice frontal and midscalp growth and coverage given his hair characteristics. He has grown his hair out which really adds to the overall look of fullness. I have not seen him since the last transplant as he does not live in the Portland area so the “after” photos were taken elsewhere hence the different backgrounds. When I received the updated photographs, I was so thrilled with how his results have transpired as they certainly have exceeded what I promised in that first consultation with him and I. Since he is only 8 months following his second transplant, we will update this post at his 1-year and 2-year timeframes.
  20. This female patient desired to wear her hair back; however, because of her naturally deep frontotemporal angles, she always wore her hair forward to cover them. She felt the alopecia in the frontotemporal angles gave her a masculine appearance, which she did not like. We densely transplanted 1892 grafts into the frontotemporal angles. As shown in the immediate postoperative photograph, it is vital that the grafts are oriented correctly in a lateral direction, which the hair naturally pointed in those areas. The slits are also made in a very acute manner so the hair “hugs” the scalp in the proper direction. The postoperative photographs were taken only 6 months after the procedure. We plan to have the patient return for her 1-year visit at which time I plan to post the follow up photographs.
  21. This patient had 2752 grafts placed into the frontal hairline and scalp. He is now approximately 15 months out from his surgery and his hair has grown in very well. Most important to him, it is very natural and he has received numerous compliments from his family and friends who he shared it with. The grafts were placed in a coronal orientation and were dense packed (see close up photo actually documenting the clean, dense packing). I include the preoperative drawings the viewer is able to see the hairline design and the final, natural results. The photos were taken in our Seattle office so the background/camera are not the same as in our Oregon office. This patient has posted on his own and I will update his thread with the photos. He stated when I saw him that the results more then exceeded his expectations.
  22. This patient is a 62 year old male patient from Portland who desired increased coverage in the frontal portion of his scalp. He has some scant hair in the front and wanted to redefine the frontal hairline to be able to grow his hair long for a full appearance. The before and after photos are presented which show very diffuse loss in the frontal scalp. His postoperative photos are 15 months after the operation where we transplanted 3099 grafts at the Gabel Center to the frontal hairline and frontal scalp. The interesting feature here is that he is growing his hair longer which adds additional volume to the frontal scalp which ultimately translates to a fuller appearance. Also, he has colored his hair black which further accentuates the fullness. The postoperative photographs were taken in the way that he styles his hair which is to layer it from left to right, again, giving an thicker/fuller result. Overall, the patient feels that his hair makes his appearance look years younger and overall he feels more confident with it. These photographs were taken with as much consistency as possible: I have been using the exact same camera (Nikon D300)/lens system for years, with the exact lighting arrangement without flash, and a consistent colored background which has not changed in years. The exact distance from the camera to the patient's chair is marked with tape on the floor, and we use the same settings on the camera to best obtain as close as possible identical shots. I also go through great lengths to have the patient look at objects pasted in the room on walls, a camera tripod, and light stands so they are facing the exact way for the before and after photographs for each and every patient. The photographs are all taken in hi-resolution which are cropped to fit in the frame I designed for presentation.
  23. We are presenting a 56-year-old gentleman who is 7 months out from a hair transplant to restore the frontal hairline. His goal was to redefine the frontal hairline so it flowed smoothly into his existing hair. We are presenting four views: frontal, top, left and right. Each series shows photos before markup with the hair pulled back to demonstrate the degree of alopecia in the frontal region, the lines drawn preoperatively which will be used to recreate/define the frontal hairline, an immediate postoperative photograph, and a 7-month result. The results show the transplanted hairs appear very natural, and they frame his face very well. The density of the transplant also shows a nice progression from anterior to posterior.
  24. This patient is a 57 year old gentleman who desired to increase the density of the frontal scalp. He was not interested in lowering the hairline; he only wanted to increase the frontal density without causing a major change in his appearance. The patient is presented 19 months after surgery showing a much improved frontal scalp density. The hair was not trimmed or cut to perform the procedure. We utilized a combination of precut slits, and it was further refined with the stick and place method. The patient is extremely happy with the results and it has certainly met his expectations.
  25. This 53-year-old gentleman started thinning years ago at the top and crown areas of his scalp. He had tried medications without any significant growth. We transplanted 2098 grafts into the crown approximately 6 months ago. The series of photographs show the scalp as he presented before any surgery or haircuts, another photograph depicting the area of transplant showing his natural swirl pattern with blue markings, and the 6-month preliminary results. The swirl pattern was created by following some the “wispy” natural hairs that he had so I am able to make the slits in the natural direction and angle of his native hair. At 6 months, the transplanted follicular unit grafts are growing very well. He said that he did not shed that much after surgery and he has been already cutting his hair regularly. Also, the video shows the close up of the donor scar, which is thin and difficult to see even with his hair cut very short. Overall the hair growth is excellent at this stage and we anticipate that the number of hairs will continue to increase and his hair will also thicken over time. He said he would come back in 3-month intervals to show his growth over time.
