Advice for Hair Loss Sufferers Considering Hair Transplant Surgery

  1. Day 1. Hi everyone, I finally did it. After contemplating for many years at he age of 19, and now at the age of 32, i finally saved up enough $$ to get a hair transplant. I went with Dr. Hasson as my first consultation and it went really well as he's very personable, and wants you to look like a rockstar. And of course because he's local. I originally was planning on going with Dr. Diep, however that didn't go to plan and I'm truly glad i went with Dr. Hasson instead. Anyways, I had procedure for 3000 grafts to be implanted, it took all day from 7am to 9pm to finish. A lot of bathroom breaks and they offer a huge selection of meals to pick from 3 different restaurants nearby, which i wasn't' expecting. Dr. Hasson also consulted with me with hairline and i always had a big forehead so i wanted it lowered a bit to fit my face more naturally and have more hair dense altogether. Once that was done, the nurses prepped me up and did the extraction and then Dr. Hasson came into work on me and design and then a second pair of nurses assisted the implant. He always checked up on me once or twice and was getting me more stoked about people's results as he was showing me a previous patient who had came in after 9 months to take pics of his results and it was amazing to see their before after live. In in the end I was pleased with procedure, and i can't wait to see what i look like going forward. Below are two pics: the left is after coming home the night of the transplant and the right is how my M shape hairline was before taken in the car ride to the clinic. You can't really see the hairline difference yet, hopefully it'll turn out like a rockstar. Anyways, enjoy, let me know if you have any questions. P.S. Going home was painful but the pain killers help.
  2. Intro I’ve done some research and I want to be corrected if I’m wrong. If I can be, I will have the confidence needed to consult with ASMED. About me Late 20s Norwood 3V (minor loss at crown) Finesteride and Minoxidil - hair loss stable. Goals Restore hairline and temple points and minimal loss at crown. Thoughts ASMED ASMED get decent results but it’s roulette in terms of which tech team you get. Donor management isn’t the best - they use more grafts than other clinics to achieve the density illusion. I’ve also seen more aggressive hairlines on younger patients than more conservative clinics. I worry that if the meds stop working down the road, I could be left with limited grafts and an unatural look. FUE I have three crowns so having super short hair for me has never worked. Therefore I’m not worried about FUT. I also think FUE isn’t great when you’re younger because of how loss can resume: you can get more grafts out of FUT in the long run and it doesn’t destroy nearby follicular units like FUE. FUE is blind. FUT has better survival rates. Conclusion I am actively considering ASMED but the above consist of my reservations. Therefore, I’m also thinking FUT with Hasson Wong.
  3. Hello Forum. This is my first post. I had an FUT with Dr. Hasson in March 2018. 5113 Grafts, of which approximately 2/3 went into the front and 1/3 into the crown. I'm submitting some photos of the journey and my results so far. Here are the pre-op pics. Sorry, I don't have any pre-op pics of the crown area.
  4. Overview: 2623 graft FUE with Dr. Hasson on December 19, 2016. I am 27 years old and wanted to share my experience start to finish with Dr. Hasson from Hasson & Wong. Here is the graft breakdown of the surgery: 1's - 432 2's - 1642 3/4's - 549 Transcetion Rate 1% Background: I have always been pretty vain about my hair and noticed thinning when I was 19/20. I didn't do much about it other than take longer to style my hair to make sure every hair was "perfect". 2012 I got a consultation done with a hair loss institute and ended up buying a laser comb and starting taking Continuite by Ross Shampoo/conditioner. I used the comb 3/week 20 minutes at a time and even introduced a DHT blocker with a massager about a year later. This seemed to slow thinning down a bit and it seemed like I was maintaining fairly well. For those out here I am sure you are familiar with becoming obsessed about your hair, constantly checking the mirror and heaven forbid someone touches it playfully! It consumed my thoughts every time I had to get ready I would take extra time and I just started to wear hats as often as I could when I worked out or went out. Not that it was that bad but just to put my "head" at ease. None of my friends or even girlfriend at the time knew that I was that vain about it because it didn't seem that bad as neither of them really ever commented on it that I was losing my hair. But I knew Of course you get jealous for every man that walks by on the street or friends that have awesome hairlines and flowy hair. About 2 years ago I added in "Hair Essentials" by natural wellbeing to the mix and 1.5 years ago I took up rogaine, the shedding phase sucked! We all know how it goes, the more you stress about it the more you seemingly lose, but the more you lose the more you stress - vicious cycle. I also hated putting rogaine in my toiletree bag knowing that my friends could see it any time. Also applying it I didn't like as it is tough to style with it and a pain if you are having someone over late and need to apply at night. My barber who I had been to for years knew of my situation and she would do her best to cut my hair appropriately. For example my left side is stronger so she would let that grow out so that I could essentially comb it over and into the other hairs when I styled it. The illusions worked! As long as I didn't have to go swimming, sweat working out profusely or be in the wind. Long story short- I knew I didn't want to keep spending all the time & money on consumables to AT BEST maintain what I was have or slow it down. Cue my research for hair transplant, which is something I joked about with my cousin in the past that we would have to resort to (but always remained a joke). Earlier in 2016 I met with Doug and Dr. Wong and was initially quoted 1000-1200 grafts (because I had my hair styled I even fooled them!). After researching proscar I got on it in about March 2016 with no side affects even though I let my mind question it at times. I considered a HT but had to do more due diligence to see if Hasson & Wong was right for me and at the time they were still a little more fresh to it as they had changed a couple things with it. Mid-2016 I met again with much more research done and they answered my countless questions. I was quoted for 2,000 grafts by Dr. Wong. Still being cautious I went back and met with them yet again and this time was quoted 2,500 by Dr. Hasson (I didn't style my hair). I knew that if I didn't do a hair transplant there was no "end in sight" to get better and going with one of the best places in the world helped keep my mind at ease in regards to the outcome I would get. Now at 27 it isn't easy to come up with cash for a 2,500 graft surgery but really money is nothing compared to putting my mind at ease and to know I can hopefully finally put my head to rest and not spend so much time worrying about it. Dec 19 was the big day with Dr. Hasson. Day of the Surgery - December 19 2016 If this already wasn't one of the craziest days of my life, Vancouver decided to have its biggest snowfall in years overnight causing havoc on the roads. My appointment was at 7am, I left my place at 5:45am for a normallly 30 minute drive and ran into accidents all over. Already 30 minutes late, I ditched the car which was at a full stop for an hour due to the havoc ahead of me and ran to the skytrain where I took 3 skytrains and a 15min dash to the clinic. I ended up getting there, sweaty, at approximately 8:45am. Elena was great at coordinating with me and they were all very understanding the ill-timed act of god that gave me quite the adventure in the morning. I was worried about this affecting the speed of the surgery that they would rush but they assured me it would not. Luckily my blood pressure wasn't over the top so we proceeded to shave off my precious existing hair, first time I have had a buzz cut since I was a kid! We got right into the extraction process by 9:30/10am and aside from a small lunch break Elena was working her magic until about 4pm straight. The only thing that fell asleep were my arms from time to time I was I guess too excited to fall asleep myself, but the process was fairly painless. People talk about the anasthetic injections but they are not more painful than when you go to the dentist for a cavity. It was encouraging to hear my grafts were really high quality, I was aware the back of my head was very thick but this was reassuring. The convo was good with Elena and I was relaxed to a constant playlist of Kygo which I enjoyed. 4pm or so rolled around and it was time for Dr. Hasson to make his slits. We drew the hairline and I left it mostly up to him, he is the expert after all. My hairline was goign to be the same and essentially the grafts are just for the front density. Of course it is hard to not let my mind wander on what is the best for me in terms of the grafts where they should be placed and if they should be more spread out to the back or to bring my hairline a tingle lower but you gotta let the expert do his thing! Time will tell. I honestly thought I was going to need some in my crown, but after shaving it looks as though I got hair through it all which I was pleasantly surprised at. approx 1-2 hours of slits and anathesia and Dr. Hasson was out. He is an incredible guy and for how long he has been doing this, super understanding and kind (good sense of humor too!). Small dinner break and other than that the next 6-7 hours were putting the grafts in! I swear I finished about 1.5 seasons of brooklyn nine-nine on netflix while two ladies switched on and off putting grafts in. One of the nurses shoulders was super sore, and she was a trooper to fight through the pain. The overhead light was a little low as well and they kept hitting their heads/topbun on it. I was discharged at 12:45am with head bandaged up. So I guess me being late due to the weather did not compromise the time they put in to make sure the quality was good! I was happy to stay as long as needed and for them to take their time, I just felt bad for them. Towards the end my anathesia was wearing off so it started to get fairly painful. Almost was a trade-off as the needles were more painful to inject because the head was sensitive. The first sleep was uncomfortable I was just worried about staying straight up. Head was throbbing but a couple t-3's fixed that. I work from home so getting up at 7am the next morning to catch up on e-mails was challenging to say the least. It wasn't my most productive week of work lets say that. Days 1-5 after They fairly blend in. I went in for a wash by the clinic 4 straight days. The swelling in day 2-4 was at its peak and was f*cking hilairous. I laughed hard every time I looked at myself in the mirror. Despite my ear being in tact, it looked like I had gone 12 rounds with Tyson in his prime. Obviously being extremely careful each day to make sure I don't dislodge any graft I slept on my back each night which made sleeping pretty uncomfortable. Had some pain here and there, nothing that advil can't fix. I think the most challenging part honestly was coming up with excuses for family/friends why my parents and I couldn't spend Christmas with them or why I couldn't go to social events with my friends. Summary You get what you pay for, and for me in this life changing process it is important to go with the cream of the crop. Through the whole process, the doctors, nurses, Doug were all fantastic. I know this post is a bit of ramble, but it was past threads from people in my age range (trashpanda, N0Air, spidey) that made me feel more comfortable with this, so I hope I can do that for others. I am ALREADY getting impatient and nervous for the next 3 months with respect to the recovery process and to what my final result will be. If you have any further questions or comments feel free to post here or privately message me!
  5. I’m new to the forum and am looking to get a procedure done later this year with Dr Hasson. The more I read though, the more questions I have. Feedback on any of the following would be appreciated: - How long is the typical FUT scar? I've read that Dr Hasson tends to always go ear-to-ear. Is that common or extreme. I was told I’d likely need around 3500, and am wondering what size of scar that equates to? - For those who’ve already had an FUT done could you ever take your hair down to a #1 or #2 clipper setting without the scar being completely obvious/awkward? - How did guys wear their hair during the tough phase of recovery (1-4 months post-op)? My hair is pretty long, but my preference would just be to go down to short clipper setting until month 5 when hair starts to really grow again and then just let it all come back in uniformly at once. My concern though is that I won't be able to shave my head close enough to match the surgical area length during that time period due to the scarring? Am I destined for a short term awkward comb-over to hide the procedure at work until real growth begins? - On average how long does the scalp implant-area stay red/pink/discolored? - I've read a lot about facial swelling post-op, is that a very common issue and if so how long does it take to dissipate? I’ve seen that some clinics use tight headbands to keep the swelling from falling into the face, is this pretty much standard practice at all clinics? I know it’s a lot of questions, but figure the folks on this forum are probably best equipped for feedback. Thanks.
  6. Hi guys, My journey with hair loss is probably not so different to many of us although I feel I have benefitted from the invaluable information provided on forums to help me make better decisions sooner. I have had two transplants. One with Dr Feller back in 2007 and one very recently with Dr Wong. If memory serves me correctly, the first session was around 3,000 grafts. The latter session in Dec-2014 was 4,650 grafts. I plan to provide an overview of my experience at both below, I noticed my hair loss during my early 20s. Having tried numerous things such as Propecia and Minoxidil (I struggled to be disciplined with these) and including being ripped off by Advanced Hair Studio, I finally opted for a hair transplant with Dr Feller in 2007. To sum up the transplant undertaken with Dr Feller resulted in good hair regrowth, however the overall experience including before, during and after was not to a standard that I expected, nor to one that I consider of a good quality, particularly given the money I was spending. Having no benchmark other than my own expectations, I decided to assume that the experience was typical and let it be. However, after my recent experience at Hasson & Wong, I wish I had chosen H&W from the onset. I have read posts on forums with individuals becoming a little defensive over any negative comments about surgeons, however this is my own personal experience and I stand by it. My reasoning is attached in a comparison table. Overall, both are good in my experience, but Dr Wong is my choice for any future treatments. The service, pre, during and after care, and empathy was way beyond what Dr Feller offered.
  7. Hello, I wanted some help/advice on the next HT surgery that I might be planning on doing. I did my first HT in 2009 with Dr. Feller and I plan on getting my HT done by either Dr. Rahal or Dr. Hasson some time this year or early next year. There are two main areas where I need input from experienced folks on this forum: 1) What are some of the known techniques on concealing the FUT scar? I have heard and in my 1st HT as well, doctor shaved the recepient area and I ended up getting a very short (#1) crew cut for rest of the head after the surgery - For how many months the scar is easily visible? (I understand that this depends on the individual hair growth and I can't recollect this from my first HT surgery) - I plan on taking a month off from work; would that suffice as far as the visibility of the scar goes? - I currently use dermach and toppik/nanogen; Does dermach help in concealing the scar as well? 2) I see that both Dr. Rahal and Dr. Hasson have their clinics in Canada. Do they perform surgeries in any of the US locations as well? I am living in US on a work permit and my US visa stamp has expired so in order to get the HT done in Canada, I would have to get a Canadian visa as well as renew my US visa 3) Lastly, what is the per graft cost that I am looking for either of the doctors? Apologies if this information is already present in the forum threads. In that case, pointers to those would be helpful. I would appreciate any response to my above questions. Thanks in advance!
  8. Hello all! Long time lurker first time poster. I'm 28 and started loosing hair around 23. Just started propecia about 2 months back and have stopped majority of the shedding except for the normal hair shedding. If I knew what I know now I would have started propecia at 22. After research and reading, thanks to this forum I have decided to go with FUT and have narrowed it down to 3 doctors. My 3 choices are... Dr.Rahal, Dr.Hasson from Hasson&Wong and Dr.Arocha. Between these three one of them have told me I need 3000 grafts, 2000 in the front and 1000 for the crown. I live in Texas so Dr.Arocha is about a 4 hour drive. Although I don't mind flying to Canada for Rahal or Hasson. What I'm looking to do is fill in the crown, which will be about 1000 grafts, and then restore/fill in my hairline and temple area. I'm not looking to create a new hairline which is lower than my original hairline or anything like that. Just want a natural look back. Also will probably continue to loose hair over time so don't want to over PACK the front hairline. Who would you recommend for what I am looking to do? Or would you strictly base the decision on the price that these 3 clinics quote me since all three doctors are topnotch?
  9. This local patient came to see Dr. Wong about thickening the frontal zone as well as the crown. Dr. Wong moved 2160 grafts in one procedure for the result shown below which is at 9 months post-op.
  10. Help me Obi Wanthair Kenobi, you're my only hope... Hiya. I'm 43 years old and have noticed my hair receding over the past five years more and more, but now it seems to be really thinning out over the last two. I posted lots of pictures in my profile. I am apprehensive and confused as to what I should do at this point. I'm pretty positive I don't want to take the current choices of drugs (which is basically Propecia/Finasteride at this point in time). I don't want to be stuck on them forever and also I'm not a fan of modern medicine -- seems there are always side-effects. Shaving/buzzing my hair doesn't seem like a real option though either as I just don't have the head for it (more on this later). I have been wavering on HT for the past couple of years. I went to visit Bosley about 1.5 years ago, but didn't leave with a very good impression as you probably already know. They seemed more interested in "When can you schedule" than anything else. I then put this thought on hold, hoping (like many of you probably) that maybe a solution was coming just around the corner. I started to work from home this past August, so that is a plus and I decided to do something about this hair loss while I have this ability/job as it would make recovery less stressful -- or so I thought. I see some doctors require buzzing my hair! This thought is really tweaking me as it means I will be quarantined to my home until my hair grows back out. I really don't look good in hats at all, and I think if I wore one socially, it would be a dead give-away as I have NEVER worn one before. I had gone to see Dr. Goertz a couple of weeks ago now (as he's very local), and he seemed like a good guy. He did the drawing on my head thing, and the template tracing thing -- none of which Bosley ever did. I even saw someone post a log of his work and it seemed a positive experience. Well two days ago, I called to put the $1k deposit down and the office turns out is closed on Wednesdays. A blessing in disguise it seems as I decided to punch his name into this site and was horrified to see the warnings! I literally got queezy thinking that *I* might have just been one of the horror stories I read about! I then researched a bit more and see that both Hasson & Wong and Gabel are very highly recommended. Both are equidistant from me (3 hours). Both appear to be roughly the same price. H&W do offer 2 day accommodations which I like, but it also involves travel across the border (which can be a multi-hour hassle). Given the choice which of those three doctors is THE best for me? Price is not an issue -- I just want "the best" as this isn't something I can really cover up if it is done wrong. And from what I gather, I'm probably looking at only about 1800-2100 grafts anyways (would you agree)? I am terrified of: a botched job! an un-natural looking job! a huge scar (although I wear my hair short/long enough in back #2/#3 or longer this is less of my concern) pain of staple removal (I read that they are not as easy to remove as sutures and can be quite painful to work out) also that given the distance, I'd most likely have to get them removed at a local hospital. a shaved head and being stuck home alone until enough of my normal hair grows in to cover the HT area -- possibly 2 months?! I just got a very short haircut last night to try and get people used to me with short hair, and I had her buzz the sides and back to a #1 so that I can measure how long it takes to grow out to say 1" or so. pain of needles shoved into my head! YUK! (I hate needles) pain of recovery (I read stories of numbness for months, or headaches, or sensitive scalp, or tight skin, etc.) I know the needle thing sounds like a big deal considering the whole process involves them effectively, but I have been mentally preparing myself for it and I realize I don't have any other choices here. I should mention that I have had Alopecia Areata off and on for probably since 2002. It has been dormant for the past 3+ years though. But back when I'd get the little bald spot in the middle/back of my head, I'd get 5-7 Cortizone injections, so I am hoping the numbing needle and follicle transplant is not worse than that. Other concerns are that I don't want to go through this again. I hear many people talking about their 2nd and 3rd procedures. Given my NW3 head and those grafts do you think I will have to have another, and after how many years if so? Is it the case that my hair loss will stabilize (given my age) or will I forever be losing hair till I'm bald on top? Meaning, if I get a HT, is it going to start to look wonky in a few years b/c my "natural" hair will have fallen out and now I'll have weird patches or something -- forcing me to do this again? What's this business about "shock loss"? Is that something I should be concerned with (given these three doctors and the buzz cut they require)? I read Dr. Lindsay (I think) talked about removing the sutures on day 7 to minimize "railroad tracks". Other doctors all seem to say 10-14 days. Thoughts? Are there any kinds of "guarantee" with these procedures? or are you basically at the mercy of the doctor and just hope things are going to look good in the end -- 8+ MONTHS later? Is there a list of questions anywhere I should ask the doctor (so I can cross check with my own list to make sure I'm not leaving anything out), or is that even a moot point with those three doctors as I can just have faith they are "the best"? Lastly, and this is the doozy, how many people have remorse over their HT? I have read a fair amount of people wishing they had never gotten it done! This really scares me. Is it that those people went to horrible doctors and this is not something I should concern myself with with H&W/Gabel? Thanks for any and all advice, guidance, help, recommendations, thoughts, encouragement, etc...

  17. I am new to the forum and I am currently thinking about getting an HT. A little bit about me: I'm currently 26 years old and have had my hairline slowly receding for the past 4 years, but I have never really had a "good" hairline. I have been told I am norwood IIA. On my mother's side everyone has a full head of hair and on my father's side, only my dad is bald. I've thought about trimming my hair down to a 2 but don't feel that it is a good look for me. I have already had an FUE procedure done with a popular HT doctor but had a very poor result. Because of this I am considering an FUT as it seems from looking on forums that people say it has a better yield. I am nervous about this because of the linear scar but I feel that if you have a doctor well trained in this procedure that it should be minimal. My goal is to maintain a mature hairline and to thicken my current hairline along with bringing the temple area down slightly. I am trying to be realistic about HT as I know I can never have the density of when I was 19-20. I am currently on the BIG THREE and that has seemed to completely stabilize my hairloss for the last 3 years but no regrowth. I am currently wanting to find a good HT doctor. I live in the NW so I have been looking into Dr. Gabel and H & W. In your opinion, who is the better doctor (best results) or should I be considering other doctors for the best hairline result possible?
  18. Hi All, I am looking to get a procedure done during Christmas this year and after having done a fair bit of research, I narrowed my list down to Hasson & Wong and Shapiro Medical Group (SMG). I have been in touch with both clinics, but am having trouble deciding which one to go with, so I am hoping I can get some help here! The way I see it, it's not exactly an apple-to-apple comparison - which is making the decision a little tricky: 1. Doctor: SMG: Given my preferred schedule, I can only book with Dr Paul Shapiro and NOT Dr Ron Shapiro himself. (Is this something I should be concerned about?). vs H&W: I haven't specifically spoken to Mike about who would perform the procedure on me (I will confirm that later today). Between Dr Hasson and Dr Wong though, is there a general preference/recommendation? 2. Strip vs FUE / # Grafts: SMG: Given my relatively young age (27), Matt (Zupon) recommended that I get on to Propecia and let the meds work on my top and crown area, while we focus the procedure on to the hair line. As such, an FUE would be the way to go - given the relatively low number of donor grafts required for this first procedure (Matt recommended 1600-2000). H&W: Mike was not so 'pro-FUE' (partly coz H&W does not offer FUE procedures?) and said Strip would be the way to go. He estimated 3500-4000 grafts on the hairline and top core (leaving the crown for Propecia to take care of). So my options are: A. 1600-2000 graft FUE with Dr PAUL Shapiro OR B. 3500-4000 graft Strip with either Dr Hasson or Dr Wong My question then is - which option should I go with? I need to confirm my booking at either clinic in the next day or two - so I'm a little pressed for a decision - but I'm having trouble deciding between the two! Also - SMG may not have a slot open at my preferred schedule at all (even with Dr Paul Shapiro), while H&W has confirmed a slot for me. Not that I think that should be a big part of the decision, but it is a consideration nonetheless.... Another small factor - given the difference in the number of grafts recommended - the procedure would be about 25% cheaper at SMG than at H&W (Again, not a big consideration in my mind). Any help / advice will be much much appreciated. Thanks a lot all!!
