Dear forum members, As many of you know, we gather as much information as possible about a physician, their staff, technique and track record before they are even considered for recommendation on the Hair Transplant Network or membership in the Coalition of Independent Hair Restoration Physicians. Part of our review process involves getting input from patients and the members of this forum community. To learn more about this review process, click here. We’d like to gather your input and opinions regarding the potential Coalition membership for Dr. James DeYarman of La Jolla, California. Dr. DeYarman's previous Coalition membership was suspended years ago due to concerns we had that may have affected his patient results. However, we genuinely believe that he has resolved all of our previous concerns and is performing large sessions of ultra refined follicular unit hair transplantation exceeding 4000 grafts when appropriate for the patient. Dr. DeYarman also uses PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma), ACell, custom blades and all other means to assure optimal results. His use of PRP and ACell is often provided at no additional cost to the patient. Dr. DeYarman's large staff of 7 technicians are also very veteran averaging 8 plus years of experience. By all indications, he and his staff are garnering consistent high quality results. Dr. DeYarman has over 32 years of experience and performs hair transplant surgery exclusively at his clinic in La Jolla, California. Dr. DeYarman offers both follicular unit hair transplantation (FUT) and follicular unit extraction (FUE) and operates on only one patient per day. Dr. DeYarman harvests the donor strip using a single blade and closes the wound using staples and the trichophytic closure technique. Alternatively, Dr. DeYarman will use sutures if the patient has a preference. Dr. DeYarman varies the width of the strip in order to reduce the traction forces and tension on the wound. He also inserts a 2mm strip of ACell in the donor bed prior to closure for optimal healing. Dr. DeYarman feels that this combination significantly reduces the appearance of scarring. To learn more about ACell, click here. Dr. James DeYarman creates tiny recipient incisions using custom blades as small as .6mm in order to minimize trauma to the scalp. This in conjunction with creating microscopically prepared ultra refined or "skinny" grafts enables him to dense pack up to 50 FU/cm2 when appropriate for the patient. Before transplanting follicular units into recipient sites, Dr. DeYarman injects .1cc of PRP into the incisions followed by a 2 minute scalp massage for maximum absorption. Because the body increases platelets while healing itself, injecting PRP may provide an automatic increase in platelets and in theory, should promote optimal healing. Dr. DeYarman is dedicated to natural hairline reconstruction and uses only 1 haired follicular units for placement in the hairline. In order to create the most natural looking hairline and results, Dr. DeYarman uses a one centimeter grid on each patient's hairline and uses Adobe Photoshop to assist with hairline design. Dr. DeYarman uses Dr. Jim Harris' motorized SAFE Scribe during FUE with punches ranging from .8mm to 1.0 mm in size. In his hands, Dr. DeYarman feels confident that this device maximizes both quality and quantity of the grafts during the extraction process. Additionally, because this tool uses “blunt dissection” as opposed to a sharp punch, angle and direction of the punch is less critical to avoid transection of the hair follicle. Given Dr. DeYarman's vast experience in performing ultra refined hair transplants and providing only the best results, in my opinion, he should be reconsidered for Coalition membership. In recent weeks, Dr. DeYarman has presented numerous examples of his recent procedure and results on this forum. This patient is a 26 YO male with AA affecting the bilateral temples, hairline, frontal forelock and Midscalp. In addition, there is significant miniaturization affecting the crown as well. The patient has elected not to utilize finasteride. Our plan is to recreate a conservative hairline with significant recession so as to accommodate future loss and reserve grafts for the reconstruction of the midscalp area. 2402 FU total, 828 one's; 1489 two's; 85 three's. Tricophytic closure.
This 48 YO gentleman has experienced mild bilateral recessions and thinning of the frontal forelock over many years due to androgenic alopecia. Patients requiring subtle work such as this often wonder and ask, "What will I look like right after surgery? A week after?" Here ya go. The first eight show his presenting preop condition, the next three his appearance at post operative day one, and the last four at post operative day eight. The small scabbing present will usually all be gone by post operative day 12 - 14. Total grafts: 1821; 799 one's; 990 two's; 32 three's.
Dear Forum Members, As many of you know, we gather as much information as possible about a physician, their staff, technique and track record before they are even considered for recommendation on the Hair Transplant Network. Part of our review process involves getting input from patients and the members of this forum community. To learn more about this review process, click here. After viewing several of Dr. Diep's results and receiving positive input about him and his work from members on our forum, I agree that it is now time to formally present Dr. John Diep of Los Gatos, California for potential recommendation on the Hair Transplant Network. At this time, Dr. Diep is only being considered for recommendation, not the Coalition. To see our standards for recommendation, click here. We would appreciate your input regarding his potential recommendation. Dr. Diep fellowshipped under Coalition member Dr. William Rassman and has been performing exclusive hair transplant surgery at his clinic in Los Gatos, California for over 5 years. Dr. Diep and his dedicated staff of 7 technicians have the ability to perform large densely packed sessions of ultra refined hair transplantation exceeding 3000 grafts when appropriate for the patient. Dr. Diep offers both state of the art follicular unit transplantation and follicular unit extraction (FUE) and only operates on one patient per day. Dr. Diep shares Dr. Rassman's philosophy for putting the patient's best interest above technical dogma as well as his commitment for producing only the best results. Using cutting instruments as small as a 20 gauge needle, Dr. Diep believes that creating a combination of saggital (parallel) and coronal (perpendicular) incisions mimics the natural angulation and direction of the natural hair. Because of this, Dr. Diep does not require shaving of the recipient area. Dr. Diep uses a single blade scalpel and harvests the donor strip free-hand in order to minimize transection to the surrounding follicles. All follicular units are dissected and trimmed under microscopes and carefully placed into the recipient sites by his experienced staff to maximize hair growth yield. Dr. Diep uses the trichophytic closure technique for all hair transplants he performs and utilizes a double layer suture in order to minimize tension on the wound. This includes Monocryl interrupted and running sutures for deep and superficial closure of the wound. Dr. Diep has been performing more FUE procedures and feels that FUE results can rival that of strip as long as follicular units are viable upon extraction. Dr. Diep uses both a motorized and manual punch with a modified serrated tip as small as .9mm depending on the needs of the patient. He also developed his own FUE instrument called "The Diep Extractor", which he believes helps to minimize transection and damage to the follicles during the extraction process. Dr. Diep believes that FUE is less invasive, less painful, the risk of infection is minimal and the scalp heals faster than traditional FUT/strip procedures. According to Dr. Diep, limitations of FUE includes blind dissection which sometimes causes additional transection during the extraction process and fewer grafts can be harvested than with traditional FUT/strip. Dr. John Diep also specializes in re-creating natural looking hairlines, eyebrow transplantation, scar reduction, facial hair transplantation and correcting/repairing hair plugs. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery (ABHRS) and is a member of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS), the American Medical Association (AMA) and the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP). Given Dr. Diep's experience and commitment to today's state of the art hair transplantation, I believe that he should be considered for recommendation. See our standards for recommendation.
