Advice for Hair Loss Sufferers Considering Hair Transplant Surgery

  1. What does the community think? Id love yo hear some in depth theories. Some have claimed a procedure with one of our surgeons in Chicago. Others claim it’s a hair piece. I can see both, but I’m leaning towards the hair piece.
  2. Hello everyone, i really need some advice on deciding which solution to opt out for my hairloss , HT or Hair system? I have been doing some research on hair systems for a month or so and reading most of the threads on the hair system on this platform. I even went to Custom Hair salon in my area to get to know the pricing details. one of them suggested Hair club and i even had my free consultation scheduled for tomorrow. i came back to this forum to search for reviews on Hair club salon and found some bad ones. I happened to clink on this link to read the review but after reading the comments i am worried whether i am doing the right thing by going through hair system way or not? below is the thread am taking about
  3. Hi all, Just thought I would share a little bit about what I know about the hair replacement industry in Melbourne, Australia and how I decided to go on my own DIY path to avoid getting ripped off by the salons. My intention is to help the brothers living in Melbourne who would be interested in getting an affordable a hair system but don't know where to start. My hair replacement journey started last year. I had always shaved my head ever since I noticed my hair loss. I had the clean shaven look for more than 5 years, but one day when I scrolled through Facebook and saw videos of guys getting a hair system and I was so impressed by how drastic the look can change (in a positive way), and ever since I had always wanted to get a hair system myself. If you are like me and you live in Melbourne, you probably have already Googled a lot of men's hair replacement salons. In this big, developed, most livable city to live in the world for 7 consecutive years, there are a total of shockingly THREE specialised hair replacement salons. One in South Yarra (M. System), one near the city on St Kilda Road (PH+) and the other one is in Mt Waverley (This one trades under 3 names: EZW, B&H, or HRA - look at the address on their website, all points to the same location - later on I found out the reason why they built so many websites and trade under many names is because they have very bad reviews on Google). Therefore if you have not already gone to one, there's a high possibility you probably have ended up in the other two. Because there are only 3 salons in total, they're only competing against each other, and therefore you'll end up paying about the same amount of money to which ever you go to, which is: $595 for a stock system + $90 for a cut-in. That'll be around nearly $700 AUD (or ~$500 USD) for your first unit, excluding care and maintenance products. All of them will encourage you to come back for a clean up/redo every 2 or 3 weeks, and they'll charge you around $90 for a service like that. When I asked them would I receive training on how to take it off and put it back on and what I should do for maintenance, their response was: "you can come in and we'll do it for you, why do you have to do it yourself". Then every 2 3 months, you'll have to replace your hair system again. All and all, if you decide to leave all the work to the salons, you should have a spare $5000 AUD a year (roughly $3500 USD). I calculated based on 4x 0.08mm French Lace/Thin Skin stock unit which would last you around 3 months. Again, this amount is justifiable for fellas who earn big cash and value their time more. But if you're already strained by other things financially, then this option would not be really viable. In saying that, for my first hair replacement unit, I actually purchased and used the service from the salon in Mt Waverley. The one I went with was French Lace, because I wanted some breathability. I specifically asked for 100%, but surprisingly they told me all of their stock unit comes in 130%, so it was very, very thick and super unnatural. Their color #1 - Jetblack was so black nobody would believe it was real, and the hairline was completely not graduated. They did a few measurements on my head, and cut the hair unit to my size right on the spot by placing it on a mannequin head and used scissors/pricision knife to cut it. They did not even make a template from my head and gave it to me. When they attached the unit on my head using tape, I could feel a thick layer between the unit and my head, and while they were doing the cut in, the hair line lifted, which they eventually had to take it off and reattach it back. After I left the salon, the hairline lifted again, and when I looked closely, there were spots in the hairline that made it looks so fake and obvious, and the hair was so thick that it completely looked like a drag queen wig. Have a look: Over the next few days, I was under constant stress and anxiety because of how bad and detectable the hairline looked. I wore a hat to work and didn't want to take it off. And when I took the shower for the first time, the whole thing came straight off. Luckily I had also ordered some walker tape and a bottle of ghost bond in preparation for events like this, so I took it off and did the attachment again myself. This stock unit lasted me for 3 weeks because I couldn't handle the stress having to wear a hair system so fake. I ended up ordering a 0.03mm VLoop Ultra Thin Skin online from LH to replace the one I had. The hair quality was 100% better and the color was great. When the unit arrived, my little brother helped me make a template, and so the only thing left to do was to cut the unit down to my size and look for a place to do the cut in. Again, I inquired the above three salons again whether they'd be happy to do a cut in for a unit from a third party: 1) M. System in South Yarra straight off told me they don't do cut-in for units that are not from them (appreciate the honesty) 2) EZW, or HRA, or B&H in Mt Waverley told me they'd do it for $395. 3) PH+ on St Kilda Road, Melbourne told me they'd do it for me for $300. When I asked why he would charge such a high amount for a cut in, the guy said it's the opportunity cost that he's losing. If he spent one hour doing a cut-in attachment for me, that one hour could be spent on a booking that would get him $700 revenue. At this point I was stuck, because didn't want to just spend that much every time I want to do a cut in. So I inquired another wig shop (Chiqu**) in Malvern - the reason why I didn't mention this shop earlier is because they specialise in wig, but mainly women wig. They said the cut in would be $125, the attachment would be $90. That seemed to be cheaper than the other options I had, so I brought my unit in for a consultation, and I was convinced for another $35, they could cut the unit to the template for me. They also take no responsibility during the cut-in process because the unit was not purchased from them. I agreed to do that. On the day of the cut-in, I brought the unit to the shop, and lady there cut the unit down to the size for me. She admitted that was the first time she saw a unit that delicate (0.03mm ultra thin skin). And during the cut in, she shredded a bunch of hair from that unit, and it caused a massive bald spot right at the hair line. The hair cut was not impressive at all and the blending wasn't even good. Overall, that was a good unit that was destroyed by the hairdresser. Over the next few days, I started sending emails like crazy to many many salons in Melbourne - the normal ones, not the ones that specialise in wig. I don't believe there was none that couldn't do a proper hair cut for me. Because, after all, it's still hair on your head. A lot of the places didn't respond. Some of them responded and said they are not specialised in wig cut. 2 or 3 places responded and said they could do it for me, and that's how I found my current hairdresser. I met her for the first time to fix the haircut from the 0.03mm ultra thin skin unit. I was completely in love the first place. She's been trained in wig cut and she's done some wig cut for photoshoots before, and she is a hair stylist and not just a barber, so when she fixed the hair cut and put some products in it, I was completely stoke because it turned out exactly how I wanted, and the quality looked great just like those hair system before/after videos you see on Instagram or Facebook. She charges no where near ridiculous like the ones that the other places charged (hint: she charges the same amount as she would for a normal haircut, and every 2 or 3 week when I come back just for cleaning up the side and the back, I only pay half what I would pay for a normal cut in). Ever since, I have switched to my current unit which is 0.08mm thin skin for a little more durability (the hairline is detectable, but won't be as much if you style the hair forward - but I think I'll go with French Lace next). I've learned how to do the detach/re-attach myself and I do it once a week, so all and all that's a massive cost cut for me. Here's the photo of me with the unit on and the blending at the back. I would say I'm norwood 6, but with a stylish haircut and great blending, I feel much more confident and I look much younger. I am honest and I tell everyone who ask that I wear a hair system, most of them were shocked because of how nice the hair and the cut-in quality is, and they just don't care that you wear a hair system. So I have been very happy and confident with my new look. I've started working out and started dating, and I have had no issue with the unit so far apart from the occasional hairline lifting and the detectable hairline (because I'm wearing 0.08mm thin skin), but that's the general issue with all units. To conclude this long post, I just want to say, learn how to DIY and save yourself a lot of money, don't bite the bullet and strain yourself and go to expensive specialised hair salons when the quality of the work is the same, if not worse than when you do it by yourself. Learn the basics, watch videos, buy your own maintenance supplies, there are many free resources on this forum and on Youtube. Find a hairdresser to do the cut in for you - they're not just limited to those specialised salons, they exist in normal salons as well, and they even come with higher skills because they're the ones who go through proper training and normally enter competitions and won some awards (mine does and I love her so much). I won't be selfish and keep her to myself, so if you live in Melbourne South East want to have her contact, drop me a message. Otherwise, if you have got your own stylist and know how to do most of the maintenance work yourself, congrats and well done!
  4. Hey everyone! first time user here. Long story short I'm in my early 20's a severely suffering hair loss. I wear a hat everyday and the dread of losing my hair controls my life. I currently use concealers but I am almost at the point where I can no longer use them as my hair is almost gone in some areas. I have been spending months researching non-surgical hair replacement as I am not a candidate for hair transplant, I'm 22 and almost bald. There are just so many questions I have, I just would love to mean someone in melbourne who wears one and gain a proper insight. Everyone seems to like them for the first few months and then you don't hear much. I would like to know where the best place in Melbourne is to go and how to manage prices as i'm still a student and won't be able to afford the weekly cut ins and what not. Any advice would be appreciated, just sick of worrying about it all the time.
  5. Hi all, I have used lace systems for a while and after some terrible service i decided to give the company total cover plus a go and try their product "contact skin" Heres a short review of my thoughts on them so far COMMUNICATION/INFORMATION I emailed them first with some questions about the hair and the system itself, within 24hours i had a reply with all the infomation i asked for Rating 5 out of 5 PRICE i was paying ?650 for a lace system every 3 months before, this system is a special price off ?149 for your first one and then ?269 after. A service charge off ?89 is added for the head shaving, scalp cleaning, shampoo, bonding and cutting of the system Price wise i think this is right in the middle, i have seen cheaper systems and there is many more that will cost alot more and depending on you circumstances this seems a good deal for what you get RATING 4 out of 5 LOCATION My nearest salon where the product was available was in london which for me was a 45min train/tube ride. The salon was called frankie chochrane and was your typical off street trendy london salon. Clean and welcoming its what you would expect but is quite open and other people having their haircuts will be seen coming in and out but when i went it was not busy and unless you are shy this should not be a issue to many people. The stylist was full off infomation and expalined everything fully and it took around 2.5 hours to shave my head, clean my scalp, apply the bond and attach and cut the system. The cut was superb and the eye for detail rally impressed me Really needs to be in salons! a trip into london is fun but a pain when its raining! im sure eventually they will roll it out across more 4 out of 5 THE SYSTEM The system itself is light and is cut down to size in salon. They match and order in the correct colour for you and mine was dead on what i needed to match my remaining hair. The bonding was easy and i have had no reaction to the soft bonding The reason i wanted to try this system was for one thing...the front hairline! the sales patter is that it is totally natural looking and it pretty much is. The day after having the system on i had to add a tiny bit more bond under a small section at the front of the system as it was still white ( the bond is ment to go clear after 12 hours ) and pretty soon it went clear and the front hairline looked good! here is a picture taken just after i rebonded a small area that was a little loose As you can see my hair is "up" mainly so i can show how it actually looks, i know for a fact i could not have a lace hair system in such a style and it looks as close to natural as i think i could get ( not i had not styled it in the picture just swept it to show the hairline, i usually have some wax in! ) Great base, good quality hair and so far seems great RATING 4 OUT OF 5 THE VERDICT Decent price, decent location, good system so overall its decent for what you want and pay for RATING OVERALL 4 out of 5 What could be improved? - Its a set price on the systems, if there was a option to pre buy a couple of systems at once for a small discount i would be tempted - Needs to be in more locations as traveling into london is a mission and adds a couple of extra hours ontop of the 3 it takes to fit the system - You cant buy these systems and have them bonded and cut in yourself to save money - You will need to buy your own bond, scalp cleaner etc which can add some extra cost ( to be fair lace systems you would have to buy extras as well ) I have had the system for less than a week so i will update in 8 weeks or so on how well it has lasted, the advert said 6-7 weeks but the stylist said 12 is normal so i will update when i know! Hope this helps anyone else who was looking for info on them and if you have a question just post or PM me and i will answer the best i can Regards
  6. Here's another Ahead Ink client who grew tired of wearing a hair system and instead opted for temporary/non-permanent Scalp Micropigmentation. For his initial sessions we designed a hairline which followed the few hairs that were left, but decided with session number three to lower the left side a bit. We also concealed two scars caused by pinning the system to his scalp. Before----4 weeks After 2 sessions----Immediately After 3 sessions Before-----After 3 Sessions Before-----After 3 Sessions Before-----After 3 Sessions Before-----After 3 Sessions Before-----After 3 Sessions ***white line is from vasoconstrictor Before-----After 3 Sessions
  7. Hi there! A couple of years back I underwent scalp micropigmentation, however after deciding that I still miss having 'hair' I am considering investing in a human hair hair replacement system. I am hoping that there may be someone else who wears a system based around the Wollongong/Sydney area who may be able to give me advice on getting a system 'cut in'. A google search of hairdressers who cater to hair systems has come up empty other than the companies which make you buy from them direct here in Australia. Could someone please help me... I honestly don't even know where to start to get more info on this and having never ordered a hair system before it looks as though they come as a 'full head of hair' that needs to be cut and styled. Thank you!
  8. Hey there, I am looking into hair replacement as fin and minox have not worked for me. Also...I think it's important to let you know that I am only 18 years old. =P Currently, I have rather curly hair and I was wondering if hair replacements work for curly haired individuals - I have not come across any discussions online about this and wanted your opinions. I'll attach a few pictures so you can get an idea of what look I would like to possibly achieve...I'd hope to be able to get an undercut, if at all possible... Please give me your thoughts on this...thanks in advance!
  9. Well, to try to keep this short I'll give a short synopsis. Was going bald so at age 30 had a HT from a very reputable surgeon and loved the result. Was excited about my new hair, but then after a year I started to see my hair thinning. Not so much in the part that received the HT, but the rest of my hair. Was taking Propecia and using 5% minoxidil two times a day faithfully. Even started on Nizoral (at the HT surgeon's advising) and it just got worse. Thought I was going through a case of telogen effluvium, so I went to dermatologist. The Derm thought the same thing, until after a couple months it was still happening so she ordered a scalp biopsy. After the biopsy, I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease (cicatricial alopecia, AKA scarring alopecia) I am 33, and to say the least, this thing has really taken it's toll on me emotionally. I always hated losing my hair (which guy doesn't right?) and I actually did something about it. Was so looking forward to my second procedure before all this, now I am trying to think of options. I have been researching hair systems, but not a lot of options where I am from (Northwest Arkansas). If I were in the bigger city, I would have more. I guess I am just looking for advice. I could always shave my head (but there is a scar back there now). I have read how a hair system is crucial to have cut in correctly, so I can't see how I can do that without a reputable salon nearby. Maybe there is, but I can't find any by googling them. I am not after somebody just trying to sell me stuff either, I am looking for some real advice, from real people. I took 2 years researching HT surgeons and found a great one, now I am researching other options and expect to find something else that works well for me. Appreciate all the help and support in advance.
  10. Hi there We have staff training sessions and an exhibition coming up for which we would need bald people as hair models. I wondered if you have any idea, how I could find bald people for this purpose as bald people usually don't consider to become hair models?? The models would get hair for free. Thanks
  11. I am in my early 20's and suffer from aggressive hair loss. I do not look good with the whole bald look so i am interested in a hair system. Unfortunately i do not know much about the business and i hear a lot of ppl get screwed. So i am looking for advice. Basically i want a piece that is both durable and realistic. I constantly workout (about 4 times a week), thus sweat and smell will probably be issues i must consider. need advice on bonding, application, maintenance, and what systems to buy and where.
  12. well..first of all, sorry for my english...i m greek and i moving to London next month !..what makes me anxious is that here in Greece i m a client of a famous company for hair systems whick also exists in London , but people here told me that the technique we use in Greece, which i find great,i cant find it in Uk..here,they use that thing (i dont know the word,,,hehe) ourgrandmother used to use to sew ! with some glue and they actually bond ur real hair with the wig ! they do it really great and i really like the result...i go once in a month, sometimes every 40 days cause my real hair dont grow that fast! is this technique used in UK? does someone know?thnx for helping me !
  13. hi guys, i am going for HT surgery next month under Dr Pat, and i was thinking of an idea which i would like to share and gather some opinions I am rather concerned over lingering and prolonged redness in the recipient area ( for me its just frontal ) and since getting a month off work is a strict no-no for me, i was thinking if it would be wise to get a hair system for the first couple months when the redness is still there. After a couple months or more, depending on the rate the recipient site is healing, then i can discard the hair system. any opinions guys? In the first place, roughly two weeks after surgery, i reckon it should be safe to put on the hair system w/o hurting the recipient area? Any advice and opinion would be deeply appreciated! thanks!
