Advice for Hair Loss Sufferers Considering Hair Transplant Surgery

  1. Introduction: I’m a 25 YO male, suffering from hair-loss since around 20 years old, and so I have been on Propecia ever since; Propecia managed to considerably slow my hair-loss in the crown area, but less so in my temples. This is why I have decided that it’s time to undergo a hair transplant. I have researched countless clinics and doctors in Europe/UK. I have also requested consultation of many; the main concern from all the clinics was that my hairless is progressive and I will definitely bald some more in the future, and therefore, I needed to choose the best to have a solid plan in place to not look bald at any point. After researching extensively for a year, I was convinced to go with Dr Bijan Feriduni as he is; Properly licensed/accredited by all the relevant societies/qualifications. Has a vast amount of experience with countless successful cases, many of them more severe than mine. Despite being significantly more expensive than Istanbul, I found that the price difference was well worth the added quality and personalization from Dr. Feriduni. Bearing in mind that his pricing is still less expensive than known clinics in the UK, making his services fairly priced. The consultation I got from Dr Feriduni was personalized and make a lot of sense to me. Here are some pictures; Day 0: Consultation, transplant, and tricho-pigmentation This is both the consultation and transplantation day. I arrived at the clinic around 08:00 AM. I was greeted by lovely receptionists and escorted to my private room. Which had couches, a medical bed, drawers for storage, water etc… After signing the contract and wearing the ‘OR clothes’ provided by the clinic I headed to the doctor’s office. The doctor is very friendly, humble, listened to all my thoughts and ideas and shows true care; this made me much more at ease. He then proceeded by taking photos with his microscope for the donor count etc… and made a long term plan based on donor availability. I was happy with the hair line which more or less resembled my previous hair line before the hair-loss started. Here are some before photos during the consultation; In the OR my head was shaved to 0.9mm, which gave me a mini panic attack 😅, however the nervousness was very short lived as Dr Feriduni administered midazolam; a rapid sedative that made me feel at ease in less than 10 seconds! This picture was taking of my donor and crown right before the operation started. You can tell that my crown area has very thin hairs, but Dr Feriduni suggested to cover that with pigmentation rather than a transplant in order to see the progress of the hairloss allowing the most efficient use of the valuable donor area! The Anesthetic injections were the only uncomfortable part, I expected them to be much more painful, but they were actually not all that bad. After the injections you don’t feel any kind of pain nor discomfort during extraction and implementation. It’s worthwhile to mention that extraction was done by the experienced assistants of the doctors, and so was the implementation (apart from the hairline which was done by Dr Feriduni). The doctor also made the incision opening before the extraction himself, to reduce the time that extracted grafts stay out of my body. In general, the operation was comfortable and I was watching friend on Netflix the entire time! The only uncomfortable part was extraction, as you’d have to lay down on your face for a while on a massage type bed, and you face is bound to get numb after a while. However, there wasn’t any actual pain from the extraction process itself. I then proceeded to have a BLT sandwich in my clinic room, before heading to the OR again for the trichopigmentation done by Dr. Yasmine Feriduni (BIjan’s wife), she is also very friendly and lively! The trichopigmentation was not painful at all, especially for the fact that my scalp was somewhat numb from the operation. Trichopigmentation should immediate density effect when compared to my pre photo. Here are some immediate post-op photos, notice the denser crown area from the pigmentation (also shown in the microscope) ! After this I went home, had dinner, and took Ibuprofen 600mg (pain killer) along with promethazine (which I bought with me; an antihistamine which helps me sleep and would reduce itchiness later on). I must say that the hardest part was sleeping with a sticky head on the neck pillow as oppose to my usually sleep on my stomach face buried in the pillow! I was given a saline hair spray (to use every 30 minutes) along with a foaming shampoo, serums, oil, and vitamins. Also I do recommend taking the Feriduni discount for the nearby Hassotel, which had great breakfast, and a spacious room and private terrace (if you choose the penthouse suit). Day 3: Second trichopigmentation session Its worthwhile to mention that I got a hair wash on day 2 in the clinic, and again at day 3, in which I also got another pigmentation session, this time without any anasthesia, but it wasn't actually painful but rather a bit uncomfortable. Some day 3 pictures; At this day I had no pain whatsoever. I also opted from using the neck pillow and instead made a "pillow castle" in a way which would prevent from rolling over or touching the grafts against the pillow while maintaining a 45 degree angle. At evening I went to a delicious sushi Resturant which is 5 minutes away from the hotel In which I enjoyed sushi along with ASAHI Japanese beer (Doctor allowed me a couple of beers ) !
  2. Hi, I would like to share with you my hair transplant experience with Dr. Feriduni in Hasselt (Belgium). I am 41 years old and I started losing my hair at the age of 20. 15 years ago, I had my first hair transplant in Greece with not great results (1800 grafts). So about one year ago I decided to have my second hair transplant with Dr. Feriduni because of his great reputation (searching and viewing different forums and especially this forum). The large number of great results convinced me that this was the right Doctor. I had a FUT strip surgery with him 4 months ago with about 2800 grafts. Unfortunately, the Dr. could not take more grafts because of my bad elasticity so we’re limited on the frontal area. Dr. Feriduni is an excellent guy and I found the clinic to be very professional. Attached you may find some pre op and post op photos taken by Dr. Feriduni. I’ll update this thread in about one month (5 month) because unfortunately until now there has been not hair growth. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.
  3. Hi guys, after spending the last few years following people's experiences and learning as much as I can about hair restoration, I'm very excited to be able to share with you my experience with Dr Feriduni after my FUE procedure. A bit more about me, I started noticing my hair loss a when I was in university, after spending too much time in denial I finally accepted that I was loosing my hair and needed to do sonething about it. By the time I start looking into medications and transplants I was a NW3. I have been taking finasteride and minoxidle for almost 2 and a half years now and it genuinely seems to have helped slow down/ halt my hair loss. Fastforward to my consultation I'll admit I was very nervous before going in, I didn't know what to expect and I kept worrying that once Dr Feriduni examined my hair he'd say my donor was weak or that I wasnt a good candidate. My worries were quickly put to rest. We had a good chat about my hair loss and what meds I was taking, I showed him some pictures of my male relatives and we discussed potential future loss. He then sat me down in front of a mirror and assessed different parts of my scalp. He confirmed my donor area was strong and that there was no signs of miniaturization in the crown or mid scalp which was very good. He worked out that I had around 8,000 grafts to use. He then drew what he thought was a good hairline, now maybe it's because I thought my hair loss was worse than it actually is but I was pleasantly surprised to see that he'd drawn a hairline that was better than I expected! I figured that maybe to achieve this hairline it would use up more graft than I was willing to use, however once again I was surprised to here that he felt confident that the hairline would be achieved using between 1600-1800 grafts. Overall Dr Feriduni seemed like a really decent down to earth guy and I left feeling very confident in choosing him and couldn't wait to actually have the procedure. During the morning of the transplant I had another sit down with feriduni to confirm the hairline and for him to answer any last questions I might have had. The technicians then took me to shave the sides of my head, I chose to keep the hair on top unshaven so that it would be easier to hide the transplant once the sides grow back. Dr feriduni came in to inject the anaesthetic, this was probably the most painful part of the whole thing, I always thought I was good with needles but those things hurt! He then drew out the area that hairs were to be extracted from and the technicians started the extraction (fyi having hairs whole punched out of your head is hands down the weirdest feeling!) Once the extraction was done Feriduni came in and started making the incisions for the new hairline, throughout making the incisions he kept me updated on how everything was going and at one point commented on how much he was liking the hairline already which put me at ease. Once be had finished making the incisions he confirmed that the total grafts would be 1748. He then left and the technicians had to take out some more grafts before they could start implanting. The implantation went fine but i was definetly starting to feel a bit drained. Dr Feriduni came in again as they were finishing to make sure everything was looking good. The whole process took around 5 hours which was quicker than expected. Dr Feriduni explained that the skin was really soft making the extraction process easy which helped the operation to proceed at a good pace. Following on from the surgery I decided to stay in hasselt for a few days so that I was close to the clinic. As I'm writing this now it has been 2 days since my hair transplant and I've been to the clinic every morning to have my head washed and grafts checked over. Id definetly recommend doing this as the first few days are the most crucial so it's good to know that the clinic is close if anything goes wrong. If you want to take anything from reading this let it be that both Dr Feriduni and his team are very dedicated to looking after their patients, the aftercare I have received has been top notch! I hope this has been helpful for anyone whose considering a hair transplant with Dr Feriduni I'll try to upload some photos and keep you updated! Thanks for reading!
  4. Hello, I'm new posting to this Forum. I'm in my forties with Norwood 5. I'm interested only in FUE since I keep my hair short and I would like to keep my downtime to the minimum. I don't mind traveling for the right surgeon. I would really appreciate your recommendations. Sorry if I have a long list. Thanks
  5. March 16th & 18th Hi guys, just thought I'd get a thread started while I have the time, to basically document my upcoming weekend of consultations. I think the actual organisation and logistics of the weekend itself might interest a lot of people considering doing the same in the future, on top of my experiences with each doc! I'm only a relative newbie in terms of my posting time here, but over the past few weeks and months I've gotten an awful lot of very useful info from here so just want to try and give a bit back. Given my location, and preference for FUE (surprise surprise), I was glad to see that Belgium is the hotspot in Europe (and arguably, globally). Brief Background/Description: Based in Ireland, and 30 years old. Diffuse loss pattern from early/mid 20s, and have been mixing around the medication treatments for the past 3 years. The meds have definitely had a halting effect as I am sure I would have less, but I'm becoming increasingly uncomfortable (almost anxious) about things so I think HT is the way to go for me. I'll provide pics further down the road. The girlfriend is tagging along as well! It's a bank holiday weekend in Ireland too so works out perfectly in that I'm not having to take any time off work Ambition:Regain density in frontal 3rd. Make my hair line less see-through, and thicken things up in the mid scalp. I'll admit that currently Bisanga and Feriduni are the front runners, but I'm glad I'm getting to see the other 2 docs. Who knows where I'll stand after the weekend! Plan: Drive to Dublin at 2.30am on Sat Mar 16 (2 hr drive) Fly Dublin - Brussels at 6.35am (1hr 40 flight) Arrive at 9.35am Consultation with Dr. Bisanga at 12.30pm at BHR Clinic Train at 2pm from Brussels (Zuid/Midi) to Heist-Op-Den-Berg (1hr 20 train) Consultation with Dr. De Reys at 15.45 at his home address Train back to Brussels at 18.00 and finally check into 5* Stanhope Hotel (ridiculously reasonable price) Sunday = Chill Monday - Check out at 11am Train at 11.35 from Brussels (Zuid/Midi) to Hasselt (1hr 15 train) Consultation with Dr. Feriduni at 13.30 at his clinic Train back to Brussels at 16.10 Consultation with Dr. Mwamba at his clinic Taxi at 19.00 to airport (20 mins) Depart Brussels Airport at 21.20 Arrive in Dublin at 21.50 Arrive home at 00.30 Up for work at 8.00 on Tuesday  Ambitious! As you can see, I wanted to make the most of my time there. Should be an information-packed weekend, and probably tiring! I'll be documenting everything as I go along anyway, and will put as much as possible up here.
  6. I'm close to a norwood 2-3 and have consulted with several doctors and decided on Erdogan. I really liked Feriduni's work also but he quoted approx 1500 grafts while Erdogan quoted approx 3000. I definitely want a fuller density in the hairline, which is the primary reason I ended up going to Erdogan. However, does the quoted graft number typically change significantly once you see the surgeon? On the consultation Feriduni's response said that any additional grafts over the quote would be 3 euros/graft. If I convinced him to do 3000 grafts, it would be 2-4 thousand euros higher than Erdogans. From the photos and stories I've seen on here, it seems like they do comparable and quality hairline work. Any differing opinions on this? I've got several weeks off to travel after the surgery (of course if I'm feeling up for it) and was also considering Belgium being a personally preferable place to visit over Turkey. Is it worth pushing for higher graft count with Feriduni or should I just quit overthinking this and go with Erdogan.
  7. Hi All, I am a 27yo male and have been suffering from hair loss for over 10 years now. I have very fine hard to maintain hair and they have never looked good all my life. Now, I am finally considering a hair transplant with Dr. Feriduni after having reading such awesome reviews. However, he told me that I can never get a full head of hair given my low density and I will need to keep getting hair transplants many times in my life to maintain a natural look. I have attached my photos. I need advice on what to do ? what are my best options . Can finasteride or something else help me ?
  8. Thia is my first post here, so please be gentle! I am currently considering an FUE procedure and have noticed that some non US surgeons are not performing the scoring and harvesting of grafts or new site incisions but are being performed by technicians. Whilst I believe this practice is legal outside the US I am concerned for the following reasons. 1. Do you think the names, qualifications, period of experience in this procedure, number of procedures carried out, length of time employed at that clinic should be made clear on the clinics website ? 2. Do you think a reduction in price should be offered if technicians are effectively carrying out the whole procedure(possibly training on you!). 3. How are members supposed to compare results when the actual person/s(technician/s) carrying out the procedure may not be known. Some surgeons appear to be leaning more and more towards merely administering the anesthetic, possibly making the donor incision sites(but sometimes not even that) and of course popping their head in now and again to see how its going. I can see some advantages and disadvantages of the surgeon not carrying out all the work, but there needs to be more transparency upfront so that patients can make an informed decision. Personally, if point 1. was fully disclosed and I was happy with the techs backgrounds I think the possible larger quality graft numbers achievable(due to rotation of techs and lack of fatigue) and limited time the grafts would be out of the body could be an advantage. On the downside I would be concerned to think that a tech might be in training with my precious grafts and I think I might feel cheated if the surgeon was just popping in now and again, After all we are could be talking about a circa 10,000euro one day procedure. The surgeons currently in my scope are Dr Christian Bisanga (BHR Clinic) and Dr Bijan Feriduni (Dr Feriduni Hair Clinic) both in Belgium. I welcome your comments.
  9. Hello Friends, I am a new member and posting this on my 35th birthday. After suffering hair-loss for 20 years, I feel like I cannot wait any longer. I am considering HT and have done countless hours of research on forums like these. I'm a NW 3/3V. I live and work in NYC but am willing to travel anywhere for the best results. But I still don't know who to go to. I have checked out a lot of ISHRS doctors, Golden/Platinum follicle award winners. I am still at a loss since that narrows the pool to a few hundred doctors. A few doctors I have shortlisted are Feriduni, Hassan/Wong, Feller, Wesley, Sharon Keane, Gho. I feel like every time I do more research I end up adding another doc to my list. Any suggestions would be welcome. Thank you.
  10. Hi all. First time poster and long time reader. I have narrowed my search to the following Doctors and wanted some opinions. I have seen a lot of work from all throughout this helpful forum. I live in Washington, DC, USA and realize price should not be the deciding factor but the below list of doctors have widely varying prices. Is FUE cost in USA justified? Because it's more $ does this mean they have to be better? Why is Turkey so cheap? Baubac Hayatdavoudi has some good work but he is about $5k-10k more than the others. My close friend has had 2 good procedures with Hayatdavoudi. Feriduni seems great. Maras in Cyprus even offers free lodging! What is the catch with European FUE? IF cost were not a factor would you choose USA, European, or Turkey? I am eager to see the opinions here. Feriduni (Belgium) Maras (HDC-Cyprus) Kesser (Turkey) Erdogan (Turkey) Hayatdavoudi (USA)
  11. I would like to share with everyone here my HT experience done a year ago in June 2010. I waited a full year in order to be able to share my great result right away with all of you. My HT was done by Dr Feriduni in Hasselt Belgium. I really would like to thank Dr Feriduni for the great work he has done and for the great impact his work is having on my life everyday. From my experience Dr Feriduni is the best and I am already planning my second HT with him. I hope that my story and experience will help others who are still undecided about a hair transplant. I am presently 37 and I noticed my hair lose at 30 following a stressful moment in my life. The lose was steady but at time the lose would really increase…I tried to ignore it for a few years but as years went by family and friends would point at to me my hair loss, I really suffered mentally with a great lose of confidence which caused me to lose many interest such as socializing... I began the journey of trying all type of claimed remedies but nothing worked at all. At 34, I came across information about hair transplant and spend many hours researching about the subject. I also contacted and visited many hair transplant clinics in the U.S.A. and Europe but still remained undecided on my pick. When I visited Dr Ferudini’s clinic I was really impressed by the professionalism I was greeted with, the clinic was so clean with an amazing modern design, then I was offered coffee, chocolates and cookies while I waited…When I met Dr Feriduni I was really impressed because he answered all my questions and concern with patience and great professionalism, I probably spent over an hour with him and he did not even look at his clock nor he even gave me the feeling of having to hurry. After awhile I realize that I was not dealing anymore with a Dr trying to sale me a surgery but with such a genuine person, truly honest and so human in his understanding of people. Today after my first surgery I can claim that Dr Feriduni is not only the best surgeon but also a great person. After seeing Dr Feriduni’s work and great results, plus dealing with such a great man, I decided on the spot that Dr Feriduni will be my surgeon and I requested right away a date for surgery considering that I was scheduled to go back to the U.S.A really soon. Dr Feriduni and his staff managed to squizz me into their tight schedule because I wanted to take advantage of me being present in Europe since it would be easier for me to reschedule my returning date to the USA than having to come back again. Staying in France, I travelled to Hasselt and there I was greeted by a taxi driver who outside of speaking dutch also spoke fluently English and French. Dr Ferudini had me in a luxurious Hotel in the center Hasselt which gave me the opportunity to visit the city by walk since everything was so close. Next day a taxi picked me up and drove me to Dr Feriduni’s clinic for my life changing hair transplant. I was greeted there, by his not only pretty but also really professional nurses. I was oriented to a nice and clean relaxation room, with comfortable chairs, magazines and TV…and to my surprises I was given a menu in order to chose what I wanted to have for lunch, then I was given to wear for the surgery new and sterilized surgical clothes (pants, top and sandals); again that made me more comfortable and it indicated to me that was in good hands because during my HT surgeons researches I have witnessed many times in others clinics the HT patient having his surgery while wearing jeans and t-shirt under a surgical sheet placed around the neck. When I was ready, I was visited by dr Feriduni to go over what we have decided in regards to graft amount and hair line; he again did not rush me as he did not hesitate to erase the line and start all over again until a reach was made between me being satisfied and what was possible to be accomplished in my case. At that point in time, I was guided into the surgery room and again it was really clean and everything was modern with up to date equipments and instruments, even a big flat screen TV with cable and remote was installed right in front of the surgery long chair to keep me entertain during the surgery; and of course I cannot forget while entering the surgery room the crew of pretty women greeting you with a great smile. Everything was done so softly and gently that without realizing nor feeling anything I was told that the strip was already removed and graft need to be prepared for transplant. My reaction was “Already…you have already removed the strip and closed the scar…I did not feel anything at all and it was so quick” I was so glad and so impressed by the professionalism of the work. When the transplant was completed I was given all the necessary items to use for the first night such as pain killer… and all the information required in case of emergency or concern and was told, with no hesitations to call Dr Feriduni or his head nurse anytime of the night. After a good night and a great break fast at the hotel, a taxi sent by Dr Feriduni came to pick me up to bring me back to the clinic for a final check up and head wash before going home. I was also provided with all the information in regard to caring for the transplanted hair and the scar…and again to call if I had any questions; which I did and I was answered right away. I am doing this blog a year after my hair transplant in order to have an accurate result and opinion about my experience...well to me Dr Feriduni is the best hair transplant surgeon and such a great person, his team members are just amazing. I am already planning my next hair transplant with Dr Feriduni and would do it all over again in a heart bit. Thank you again Dr Feriduni because now after a year I have regain my confidence and socialize alot more than i used to and the result of my hair transplant has such a great impact on my social and professional life.
