Advice for Hair Loss Sufferers Considering Hair Transplant Surgery

  1. Hey! I started my hair transplant journey this week and I'm going to share it here. I'm 37 years old from Jerusalem. I believe I'm Norwood 2-3. I noticed my hair started receding when I was 25. I started taking propecia (finasteride) and kept at it for 5 long years. At the age of 30 I realized that I'd rather go bald than suffer from one of the nasty finasteride side effects. Now at 37 I realize I was losing my hair at a very slow pace. I had quite a nice hairline 5 years after stopping finasteride and didn't lose everything right after as I was supposed to. I actually think that if I didn't take finasteride, I still would have had a better hairline today. But never mind that now and thank god for hair transplants. After a few months searching all over the web, I decided to do my hair transplant with the famous Dr. Bisanga. At first I was planning to do it at his main clinic in Brussels, Belgium. Then I found out that he opened a clinic in Athens, Greece, last year with Dr. C form the states. The procedure was cheaper there too (operation, travel and lodging wise). The only worry I had was a week prior to the operation when I heard that his partner, Dr. C, left the clinic to open another one in Turkey. I didn't understand why he left, but I chose Dr. Bisanga from the start and trusted I was in good hands. Not long after, I set a date with the clinic for the 1st of November. I booked an airbnb near the clinic. My partner and I stayed there for 2 more days after the operation, just to be close in case of well, anything. The clinic arranged for us a cab from and to the airport. My day started with Maria, who was kind and explained the procedure for me. I signed some documents, payed some money and was led straight away to the operation room where I met the doctor himself and his staff. Everyone was nice, everything was clean and sterile (the clinic is brand new). Dr. Bisanga drew the new hairline, and I guess like everyone here, I tried to convince him to lower it. But with no success. He's the doctor and I guess he knows what he's doing, so I trusted him on this. We agreed on 2000 grafts, but only 1845 were needed. Immediately after I agreed to this, they shaved my head and started the operation. Dr. Bisanga extracted half or most of the grafts and his technicians continued and then transplanted them in the designated area. I gotta admit, I mostly dosed off through the operation. The team was cheery, but worked hard all along. So hard that the whole thing was done in a matter of 8-9 hours. In the next room there was another guy overgoing another operation. I believe Dr. Bisanga was overseeing both of the operations. At the end of the day, Andrea, the head technician, gave us all the post instructions needed to take care of the new transplanted hair and the donor area. She was really sweet. In fact, the whole staff was, which made the procedure much easier to go through. The next day I came back for the first wash and final goodbye. Dr. Bisanga insisted I use some product to help maintain the rest of my natural hair from receding. If not finasteride, at least minoxidil. I thought about it for a while and decided against it. If I wanted to keep on using chemicals, I wouldn't be here in the first place. I made my peace with it and am willing to deal with the consequences, until my second hair transplant of course I took it easy for the next 2 days and enjoyed my trip in Athens. It was pretty sunny, so I kept my cap on. They gave me a bandana at the clinic and I was advised to wear it while I'm out. I tried to avoid the sun as much as possible while wearing it. My head was pretty swollen on the 2nd day, so I kept massaging my forehead and put an ice patch on it carefully. I was out 2-3 hours at a time, didn't sweat at all, and kept spraying my head with the solution the clinic provided me. Overall, I took good care of it while trying to enjoy my trip a little, as advised by the team. Tips from a pharmacist (me): the antibiotic I was given (doxycycline) gave me a bad heartburn and diarrhea. I advise you to come prepared and travel with antacids and probiotics to relieve these side effects. So here are my pics from before and 1 day after the operation. I'll keep updating this post every month to share this hairy journey hoping it helps someone else with their decision. Cheers!
  2. After long consideration and plenty of research, I have booked in with Dr.Bisanga on the 3rd of September 2019 in the new Bisanga / Cole Clinic in Athens. A small briefing of myself. I'm in my early 30's and possibly a Norwood 2. Not losing a mass amount of hair but enough to make me feel self conscious. My hairline used to be lower in my 20's. The hairloss started possibly around the age of 25. Typical hairloss. Receding at the temples and the hairline moving back over. I initially made contact with the B/C clinic after the recommendation on Instagram. Obviously I had done extensive research online and via lots of internet hairloss forums. I am also members of Facebook hairloss groups. It was a very tough process, to filter though all the clinics around the world. Initially, I would have wanted to get the surgery done in the UK. As it's a very daunting process to fly to a foreign country for any cosmetic procedure. As my research esculated and knowledge increased, I found that there wasn't many top surgeons in the UK. I'm definitely not saying there isn't any, I'm just identifying that my background checks on surgeons just didn't accumulate to much. I also did a hell of a lot of research on Turkish Clinics. In the end, to cut a long story short, my main essential questions never got the answer I was looking for. My thoughts behind choosing between either Dr.Bisanga or Dr.C was purely personal preference. A flip of a coin some people may say. Dr.C has been a innovator within the FUE industry creating industry designed tools distributed world wide and performing numous FUE transplants. He also trained Dr.Bisanga. My thoughts behind the choice of surgeon was souly based on my research. Also the type of surgery I was requesting and the results to back it up. Dr. Bisangas work stood out by a mile in relation to my specifics. His hairline lowering and temple work was top notch and widely documented online. Meanwhile, although I could find lots of Dr.Cs top great work online there wasn't as many (to my preferences) stood out compared to Dr.Bisanga's. Through many a conversation with my patient advisor Ian Rafferty, I decided to book with Dr Bisanga. I must say, my patient advisor Ian has been top class. Every question (there's been alot) has been answered to a tee. Quick response times, honest and realistic answers. There's no main sales tactic within this process. It made me feel reassured that the patients interests were best at heart. In my photos you will see the two hairlines illustrated on the photographs. The back hairline is what has been agreed between myself and Dr.Bisanga. He did mention that every patient is different.Normally Dr. Bisanga would look for a minimum distance of 7 cm between hairline and eyebrows. In my case due to facial features he has agreed to lower my hairline by 7-8mm. The white dotted hairline is what I would have wanted initially, (if possible) but I am more than happy to take on the knowledge of Dr.Bisanga, knowing he has my best interests and future mature hairline in his considerations. I'm going to document my full Jorney on this forum and possibly some others. Thanks, and I hope this is of some interest on your particular hair transplant journey.
  3. Hello everyone, I have a HT scheduled on the 20th of this month with the one and only Dr. Bisanga in Brussels, Belgium. My case is very small and based on the information provided to me from Dr. Bisanga's rep i will be only needing around 2000-2500 grafts. I choose Bisanga because of his outstanding reputation on this forum and his recognition around the Hair transplant surgeon community in general. I hope i made the right decision by picking Dr. Bisanga for this procedure. I also looked into Dr. Lupanzula, Dr. Erdogan, Dr. Keser, Dr. Lorenzo and Dr. Vogel. Dr. lorenzo and Dr. vogel advised me to take Finasteride for now and to postpone the hair transplant because i am too young. Dr. Lupanzula said 2000 grafts and i am still waiting to hear back from Dr. Erdogan and Dr. keser My goals for this procedure are to restore my frontal hairline and add some grafts to cover up my balding temporal area. I am 28 years old, currently not taking any medication but i have ordered my first batch of Finasteride just for trial purposes to see how my body reacts to it. I am adding a few pictures that i took today, hopefully i can get some encouraging and educational information from you guys. Let me know who is the best suitable surgeon for my scenario. Thanks i will keep y'all posted
  4. Dear All, I realise this is an oft-repeated question, and that there are similar debates/questions on other forums, however, I wanted ask your valuable advice on these two surgeons as pertains to my personal situation in 2018, seeing as some of the other comparisons date back a few years and both doctors have published more results since then. This forum has been an immense wealth of information and here I am, like many of you have been in the past, on the verge of booking my first HT, and taking that definitive step... I would welcome any advice . I'm 35 years old, and a Norwood 2.5. I have a naturally high hairline (which can be rather typical of people with long, slender heads like mine) that receded a bit from when I was around 24 to around 29 years of age. It has been pretty stable since then and I do not have any noticeable diffuse thinning in the mid section or crown area. It's really a case of having a receding temples and a hairline that is about 8-8.5cm above the eyes. I don't think anyone looks at me and says "Hey, look at that bald/blading dude", however, I'm unhappy with my "mature" hairline and want to act now rather than making what may be a significant physical change later on. Basically I have been looking at a FUE procedure with Dr Bisanga for a while now, and after having consulted with him, I had a pretty good feeling. He recommended between 2300-2600 grafts and designed a hairline that would lower the current one to 7cm above the eyes, while also filling in the temple points. He said I would look silly going any lower, particularly in later life. I tend to agree, but secretly wondered what a 6.5cm-above the eyes hairline would look like Aside from his reputation as an excellent surgeon, being a discrete person, I was attracted to the idea of a procedure where I could drive there and back right before taking a rather long holiday, thus avoiding public transport/planes and colleagues for a substantial amount of time (I have a lot of leave saved up and could potentially take 4-5 weeks off for a summer holiday). This was the cherry on top with Bisanga. However, after having discovered this site, I have noticed more and more impressive results from Dr Erdogan in Turkey (a destination I had initially crossed off my list for fear of not wanting to be seen out in public, let alone taking a plane). I started thinking to myself, ok, this guy clearly has taken care of his marketing, and seems to have a bit of a rockstar approach to hair transplants, he only does FUE etc. But basically for profiles like myself (FUE hairline work only) he has a lot of impressive results under his belt. In the last couple of weeks I have seen a few (albeit only a few) mediocre results (among many very good ones) from Bisanga (a botched right-temple graft/a few very thin results etc.) which have got me second guessing somewhat. Money isn't really an issue and I would be a fool to make it so when it comes to having an HT. So whom would you choose in my situation? Once again, your advice would be greatly appreciated.
  5. Hello every one ... I am going to have my FUT with Dr.Bisanga in 2 days and I like to share my experience for those who may find it useful . My first FUT was done in 2006 ( when I was 27 years old ) in iran with an unknown doctor to this forum . I had sever thinning on top front of my scalp at that time and I was told that 2000 grafts was done ! It looked very good for almost 3 years , until the surrounding hair started to fall ,reaching my today's condition, where the transplanted hair is like an island . ( disconnected from the humps / 360 degree surrounding ). You can see my profile for the pictures of my donor scar and many views of my current hair situation , as of April 2015 . I have been thinking of doing my 2nd HT for couple of years now , but I made my mind 6-7 month ago , and I started my research since December 2014 , using this website as a valuable source of available info , PLUS valuable advise from good people I could contact through the forum as well . My story of searching and finally choosing Dr.bisanga is a long one and may be out of most people's interest , so I don't get into that here . ( however , for anyone interested to know, please PM me and I will discuss & explain with my pleasure ). On late March I visited BHR and Dr.Bisanga examined my hair and scar and opted for FUT ( like all other clinics I had consulted except Turkish clinics which opted for FUE). Dr.bisanga opted for 3,500 grafts on a single day by removing the old scar and leaving a new scar . my surgery is in 2 days and by the end of next week , I will put all photos from the big day for everyone to see . Pls wish me luck . Thanks for reading
  6. March 16th & 18th Hi guys, just thought I'd get a thread started while I have the time, to basically document my upcoming weekend of consultations. I think the actual organisation and logistics of the weekend itself might interest a lot of people considering doing the same in the future, on top of my experiences with each doc! I'm only a relative newbie in terms of my posting time here, but over the past few weeks and months I've gotten an awful lot of very useful info from here so just want to try and give a bit back. Given my location, and preference for FUE (surprise surprise), I was glad to see that Belgium is the hotspot in Europe (and arguably, globally). Brief Background/Description: Based in Ireland, and 30 years old. Diffuse loss pattern from early/mid 20s, and have been mixing around the medication treatments for the past 3 years. The meds have definitely had a halting effect as I am sure I would have less, but I'm becoming increasingly uncomfortable (almost anxious) about things so I think HT is the way to go for me. I'll provide pics further down the road. The girlfriend is tagging along as well! It's a bank holiday weekend in Ireland too so works out perfectly in that I'm not having to take any time off work Ambition:Regain density in frontal 3rd. Make my hair line less see-through, and thicken things up in the mid scalp. I'll admit that currently Bisanga and Feriduni are the front runners, but I'm glad I'm getting to see the other 2 docs. Who knows where I'll stand after the weekend! Plan: Drive to Dublin at 2.30am on Sat Mar 16 (2 hr drive) Fly Dublin - Brussels at 6.35am (1hr 40 flight) Arrive at 9.35am Consultation with Dr. Bisanga at 12.30pm at BHR Clinic Train at 2pm from Brussels (Zuid/Midi) to Heist-Op-Den-Berg (1hr 20 train) Consultation with Dr. De Reys at 15.45 at his home address Train back to Brussels at 18.00 and finally check into 5* Stanhope Hotel (ridiculously reasonable price) Sunday = Chill Monday - Check out at 11am Train at 11.35 from Brussels (Zuid/Midi) to Hasselt (1hr 15 train) Consultation with Dr. Feriduni at 13.30 at his clinic Train back to Brussels at 16.10 Consultation with Dr. Mwamba at his clinic Taxi at 19.00 to airport (20 mins) Depart Brussels Airport at 21.20 Arrive in Dublin at 21.50 Arrive home at 00.30 Up for work at 8.00 on Tuesday  Ambitious! As you can see, I wanted to make the most of my time there. Should be an information-packed weekend, and probably tiring! I'll be documenting everything as I go along anyway, and will put as much as possible up here.

  8. Firstly, I'd like to say thanks to everyone on this forum. It has helped me immensely over the last few years. This is my first post but I will be updating it over the next 12 months as next Monday (6th July) I go in for my HT with Dr Bisanga. I'm 34, work in The City (London) have have been on finasteride and minoxcidle for the last 4 years. I'm Norwood 2 and will be having 1500 FUE to repair my hairline. Since taking the finasteride my hairline hasn't deteriorated. I will not be shaving it all down but will instead attempt to style this out so no one notices. I'm taking 3 weeks off work and will be going on holiday on day 6 with my family (wife and two kids). Naturally I'm a little nervous but mainly around the unknown, the final result and people at work finding out. I'll update next Monday (surgery day) and quite regularly for the first few weeks and then monthly from about 2 months. There is very little on the sites about keeping the hair unshaven and best ways to keep the HT hidden so I'll try and help others with this. Im not afraid to shave it if it looks terrible but would prefer to not be like Grant Mitchell when dealing with clients etc at work. Be interesting to know if anyone has any advice or experience of Bisanga. My research was thorough and so far they have been very professional. This has booked since November last year so it feels weird the waiting is up. Can't wait to be a bandana pirate in 8 days time.

  10. Hi everyone, Ive been reading this brilliant forum for a long time, found a lot of great information on here. I'm 32 and gradually been losing hair for the last 5 or so years. In the last year and a half my hair loss hasn't really changed. Ive been thinking about a HT for a couple of years now and will finally be taking the plunge. After a lot of research the two doctors I'm deciding between are Dr Bisanga & Dr Erdogan (depending if i go for FUT or FUE. Ive had online consultations with both. I believe they are both world class doctors. My goals- Re-establish strong hairline. Good density though front/mid area Light crown coverage (one procedure - over 2days if fue) Option 1 - Dr Bisanga - 4000-4500 FUT Option 2 - Dr Erdogan - 5000 FUE (over 2 days) My biggest concern with FUT is the linear scar i would be left with. I usually go grade 4 back and sides. I guess i could deal with it if it was the best option. My biggest concern with the FUE option is - would 5000 grafts (over 2 days) risk the density and quality of the final result. Is this too risky? is FUT the 'safe' option? Sorry for the long post!! I'd appreciate peoples opinions and which they feel is the better option. I've attached pictures. Thanks
  11. * Patient Age: 31 years * Medications: Propecia in the past. Not currently. * Donor area density: 70 UFs/cm2 * Type of hair: Medium thickness * Technique: FUE * FUs: 1,397 * Previous operations: Yes, at prior clinic by way of "strip" of approx 1500 FUs in the hair line. * Number of hairs per graft: - 1 hairs: 309 - 2 hairs: 614 - 3 hairs: 410 - 4 hairs: 64 The patient had a previous operation a few years ago at a prior clinic to rebuild the hair line, but the result was not as hoped. Patient therefore opted for a FUE Procedure with BHR to repair the hair line and add density. Grafts were also placed into the linear scar as the patient wanted to wear his hair short. 12. Fine blonde hair, 1331 FUE to reduce his temples and follow the existing angles of his hair. Here we have Pre Op, 2 Weeks Post Op healing through to 7 months updates. This is not a final result yet as 7 months there is still growth to come and maturing of his hair to increase the thickness around his hair line. I will update when possible with future pictures and technical data. 13. Thia is my first post here, so please be gentle! I am currently considering an FUE procedure and have noticed that some non US surgeons are not performing the scoring and harvesting of grafts or new site incisions but are being performed by technicians. Whilst I believe this practice is legal outside the US I am concerned for the following reasons. 1. Do you think the names, qualifications, period of experience in this procedure, number of procedures carried out, length of time employed at that clinic should be made clear on the clinics website ? 2. Do you think a reduction in price should be offered if technicians are effectively carrying out the whole procedure(possibly training on you!). 3. How are members supposed to compare results when the actual person/s(technician/s) carrying out the procedure may not be known. Some surgeons appear to be leaning more and more towards merely administering the anesthetic, possibly making the donor incision sites(but sometimes not even that) and of course popping their head in now and again to see how its going. I can see some advantages and disadvantages of the surgeon not carrying out all the work, but there needs to be more transparency upfront so that patients can make an informed decision. Personally, if point 1. was fully disclosed and I was happy with the techs backgrounds I think the possible larger quality graft numbers achievable(due to rotation of techs and lack of fatigue) and limited time the grafts would be out of the body could be an advantage. On the downside I would be concerned to think that a tech might be in training with my precious grafts and I think I might feel cheated if the surgeon was just popping in now and again, After all we are could be talking about a circa 10,000euro one day procedure. The surgeons currently in my scope are Dr Christian Bisanga (BHR Clinic) and Dr Bijan Feriduni (Dr Feriduni Hair Clinic) both in Belgium. I welcome your comments.
  14. Hi Guys 6 months out now my procedure with BHR in Brussels. To recap: Total grafts: 4889 1 Hair: 926 2 Hair: 2038 3 Hair: 1403 4 Hair: 522 Time in chair: About 10 hours. Original post here, and 4 month post here. It's been great. Fantastic actually. Before male pattern baldness started in my mid-twenties, I had a thick mass of hair on my head. Although those days are gone for good, I do feel like I have some of that feeling back. My new hair feels good, I can style it, it feels great. Hair transplants can be dangerous. Since I started to get some serious growth, I've taken the kind of interest in my appearance that I have not done since my mid-twenties (I'm now 48). This has involved buying lots of great new clothes, and finding out how to use all kind of hair styling products. Before the transplant I didn't see the point. My confidence has improved no end. One of the things I love to do is dancing (Salsa, other latin dances) which involves (if you are male) going up to women you don't know and asking them to dance. On the whole I don't think that the women care what you look like if you dance well, but it matters to me what I look like. MPB aged me no end, and I feel like I've got a new lease of life. I feel like I'm already at maturity at 6 months. It's hard to imagine there is much more to come, and I'm delighted.
  15. Just back from BHR clinic Megasession with Dr Bisanga in Brussels. Strip procedure as follows: Total grafts: 4889 1 Hair: 926 2 Hair: 2038 3 Hair: 1403 4 Hair: 522 Time in chair: About 10 hours. Overall experience: Very positive. I researched for some time before choosing, and at this time feel I made the right choice. My photo album is here, containing pre and post procedure photos I had a lot of grafts. I explained to Dr Bisanga that I didn't want to get a lot of procedures, but would prefer to get as much done in one sitting as possible as I basically just want to get back on with my life. Having the procedure causes too much disruption for me. Initially he said 3500-4000 grafts would be all that was possible, but on the day I was shown to have very good laxity and more was possible. I'll post pictures of the donor area in a few days once I've got someone to take the photos. Considering the length of the procedure I don't feel too bad, but I'm pretty tired. The post-op photos where taken about 18 hours after the procedure.
  16. Hello All, this is my first post (hopefully of many). I have been researching what was best for me, in regard to where/when to have my transplant, for about 3 years now. After much searching, based on quality of work, professionalism of staff, and price, I think I have decided on Dr. Brett Bolton, Age Defying Surgical Center in Fort Lauderdale, FL. Nonetheless, that was not meant to be a plug but give background info. Before Dr. Bolton, I was set on possibly traveling overseas for a transplant from Alvi Armani, but the cost was out of my range (being 24) and they seemed so sales-ey. After being on the site today, I was impressed with some ppls posts on Dr. Bisanga (Spain) and Dr. Keser (Turkey). Their sites and work were def impressive, however Spain and Turkey???? For any Americans, or otherwise, who have traveled outside of the country for a surgery, how did the prices compare (less or more than the States)? I am only looking to pay about $7,000 (including travel) for my transplant. I would also prefer a Dr that didn't charge per graft (Yes, there are some out there.. ie. Dr Bolton). Any advice on any of the Surgeons I named, and flying out of country (prices, relatability, etc) for a transplant?? Thanks
