Advice for Hair Loss Sufferers Considering Hair Transplant Surgery

My Story

  1. Hi "everybaldy", after almost 4 weeks from my surgery, I've decided to show my case. I'm from Spain, so sorry in advance for any spelling or grammar mistake. I'm 41 years old and since I was 35, after my 2nd child was born, I started to lose hair until I reached an N-V. I started to see results of friends who had gone with good results and in November, after watching a video I had prepared for my wife's brithday with memories of the past 20 years, I realized that I did not recognize myself in the photos and how my appearance had changed at this time, looking 10 years older than 5 years ago. I started looking for information and found this forum, which has been very helpful. After several options, I decided to do it with Songul and I bought the flights. Later, I was added to whatsapp group , saw some opinions that made me have second thoughts, so I canceled with her and after going crazy searching around, I made the decision to do it with Dr. Emrah Cinik, who didn't have many cases in Spain but I saw some of them in the UK and the USA with good results. In addition, the pack I hired included the extraction of follicular units from the beard in case they were needed to give more density (which I knew I would need). Once the decision was made, I did not want to keep looking for opinions, so I just stayed away from forums and comments. In Spain there are mediators for this doctor, but I can speak English fluently and contacted them directly. In my case I had 2 things clear, I wanted the painless anesthesia after reading the comments about how painful the "normal" is and also that the doctor were opening channels, not his technicians. After the hundreds of cases that I have read, I have the impression that most of the bad results have been with technicians. Surely there are very professional, but they do not play their name on it and if they have a bad day, you could say that "they lose nothing". I will save the airport, visa, etc ... because there is already enough information on all that. Everything was perfectly coordinated, I had been advised of the "normal" informality that exists in Turkey, but in my case everything was timely. They picked us up (also my brother got a HT) at 7 o'clock in the morning and arrived at the Kolan hospital at 7.30, they drew blood and we discussed with Dr. Cinik the design and, in my case, the need to use hair of my beard or not. I explained that my biggest concern was getting good density. When I started losing hair, I did what almost everyone, with the remaining hairs, I left them raise long and tried to cover the gaps, but a day I saw pictures and I realized that my appearance was ridiculous, so I started to shave my hair or cutting to 3mm according to the season. I preferred to be conservative with the front line, I have a lot of area to cover and I didn't want to lose density by lowering it by half an inch more. Also, I always had some discovered temples, so if everything goes well, I will recover my previous appearance. We pay and we go to the operating rooms where two techniques to start the procedure were awaiting me. They shave my hair, put a surgery coat and they got started! (finally !, after 3 months waiting!). They began with painless pre-anesthesia. With a pressure "gun" you are given "stings" on different parts of the head. Its function is to numb the area, they tell you that it will remove 60-70% of the pain that causes the definitive anesthesia. There was some controversy in the forums about whether it works for something or not, even some clinics that did not use it assured me that it was a marketing technique, that it will hurt you whether you put it on or not and that it was waste of money. Even so, I hired it and I'm sure I got it right, I'll explain why. When they put it on your head, you feel a small prick with force, as if you pricked yourself with a pin, but it is totally bearable. They do about 20-25 punctures for the head, wait about 5 minutes and start with the definitive one. I said earlier that I was right because there were 2 areas where they didn't go with pre-anesthesy or I didn't get enough and I felt that horrible pain that everyone talk about, it was a few seconds, but it was really painful, so happy to have chosen it. They told me they would put about 3500-4000Grafts. I had read cases in which they said that they had put less than they gave then in the certificate, so as I had nothing to do, I entertained in counting each time the micromotor pierced me the donor area (yes! .. one by one!) arriving at 4329 from my head (later I was told that not every time they punch a graft comes out) and then 302 of the beard (surely in the head they would be some more or less, but around that number). Then, Dr. Cinik came for opening the channels, it is about 40 minutes. He did it covering the entire marked area and, in addition, a scar that I have on the back of my head, above the donor area. Then the girls come back to finish putting the grafts in the microchannels, they clean me continuously and in about 3 hours or so they finished the job. I did not stop for lunch, they asked me but I was not hungry (the hotel buffet was great), so a 7.30 hours surgery and that's it, finally I got my HT done. I go back to the hotel (my brother finished 2 hours before) and I saw the result. It seemed to me that everything was quite well. I tooke pictures to see all the angles and I saw that there were no grafts at the same height on both sides. I was worried and then wrote to Dr. Cinik's assistant via whatsapp to explain my concerns. They told me that in that area I still have my native hair with a lot of density (they send me the preoperative photos to prove it) and, although I did not believe it because what I saw was a bald spot, I had to admit that they were right after seeing the next day that the little spots of my native hair were seen in that area that the previous day was a "bald" of 2 cms approximately. That zone had been shaved and that's why I couldn't see them. The problem was that my bald zone was irregular, becoming deeper on the right side towards the crown of the head than on the left side, where it still was not so deep. I explained to the doctor that I was worried that if my baldness continues going deeper, behind the asymmetric gap, having grafts on one side and not on another (I 'm not sure if I'm explaining right what I mean), he said that I did not need grafts there (and he was right). Still, I kept telling that I was not confortble with that. We were having lunch the next day and I received a whatsapp from the doctor's assistant, telling me that they would pick me up from the hotel to go to the hospital at 5:00 pm to put some grafts in that area, that I did not need it but that the doctor did not want me to go back worried to Spain. As they told me, they took me back to the hospital and in half of an hour I had 52 more grafts placed in that area and now the implants was symmetrical on my head, so if in the future I get the "white slice" on the back side of my head, It will have a more regular form. The next day I got the first wash and recommendations, but I had read so much about it that I did not heard much about what they said and the products they wanted to sell. We went back to the hotel, airport and back home. Now we have to wait, the results will not be known until 5 months from now, but the experience, professionalism and treatment received has been perfect, especially considering the bad things that I had heard about Turkey and its clinics. Here the pictures of the before and the first days: After: Donor area (3 days post surgery): Rest of the head after 3 days: Beard the day of the surgery: AL DÍA SIGUIENTE DE LA OPERACIÓN: 3 days later: 5 days PS: One week PS: 14 days PS: 3 weeks PS: Some pics under a domestic endoscope: 1 WEEK PS: 12 DAYS PS: 3 WEEKS PS: : That's all, I'll keep posting if I see it's interesting for people here. 2. I will undergo hair transplantation operation using the technique of FUE. Because I have the last pattern of baldness, NW7, only the frontline of my head, zone A, and zone B will be both transplanted with a density of 40-50 hairs/cm2 by grafts taken from the back of my head. I have been recommended not to perform both FUE and BHT at one operation. Therefore, the second operation applying BHT to cover my crown, zone D, with a hair taken from my chest will be performed one year later or may not be performed at all. My question if I shave my hair after the transplantation, will any scars appear? I used to follow a hairstyle shaving my hair at the sides and the back of my head to zero and growing my hair at the top. Because my hair at the top is very thin, it used to appear homogeneous with the shaved hairs at the sides. After I undergo the transplantation, I may sometimes continue to shave my hairs at the sides to zero and grow my hairs at the top to 1-2 cm. I may not be tied to prolong my hairs all the time. If I cut my hair to just 1-2cm long after the transplantation, will any scars appear as a result of the operation? If I shave my hairs at the sides and the back-bottom of my head (where the grafts are taken from) to zero, will any scars appear as a result of extraction of grafts?
  3. I want to undergo hair transplantation surgery. Unfortunately, the donor area in the back of my head is weak and the baldness area in my head is large where I have the baldness stage of NW7. Therefore, extraction of grafts from my chest is a must. Therefore, I have been informed by the most hair transplantation clinics and advisory websites that covering the whole of my head is not possible, especially in one session. In the first session, which may also be the only session for me, it will be only possible to cover my hairline and the frontal area of my head, so that the crown and the back of my head will continue to be empty. Some clinics have informed me that it may be possible to cover my crown in another session one year later by extracting grafts from my chest. Few Clinics are ready to cover all of my head by extracting grafts from the back of my head and my chest. I am really mystified whether to cover the frontal half of my head in the first surgery, which may be the only transplantation surgery for me or to cover the whole of my head in one surgery in a clinic ready to do so for me. If only the frontal half of my head will be covered on one session because it is reportedly and medically the typical solution for me, will it be acceptable for my appearance to be with a half-covered head and a bald spot in my head crown? Of course, it will be optimal for my personal photos and my video chatting to be with only a frontal coverage for my head. However, in real life and for youtubing, I am not sure if it will be optimal or not. How will my hair look like? How will I style my hair? Will I be obligated to a specified hairstyle? Will I have to lengthen my hair or shorten it? Will my head appearance (face and hair) be acceptable without any criticism or mockery? Will it be a distraction for the eye that looks at me to stare at my bald spot in the back of my head other than looking at my face and my frontal hair?
  4. Some clinics have informed me that hairs extracted from the chest fall after being implanted in the head in 3-4 years. The chest's hair has a very different nature and anagen phases of the head hair. However, in many cases, it gets the same nature of the head hair and gets softer and longer in an only case opposite to the Orentreich’s theory that the transplanted organ keeps its original nature. Does the chest's hair fall from the head when it sometimes fails to take the same nature of the head hair, or may it fall even if it takes the same nature of the head hair? How long does it take for the chest's hair after transplanted in the head to take the same anagen phases of the head hair where there exists a very big difference in the anagen phases between the head hairs and the chest's hair? Is the reason that the crown area, where the body's hair is usually transplanted, is the least area irrigated because of the little collateral circulation which leads to poor follicular nutrition in this area and therefore the hair is more likely to fall from it even for non-hereditary reasons? Or is the reason, otherwise, because the hair implanted in it, even if takes the same nature of the head hair, may also take its genetic susceptibility to fall?
  5. I want to undergo hair transplantation. I have NW7 stage of baldness and unfortunately, the donor area in the back of my head is weak. Therefore, grafts have to be extracted from my body, especially from my beard and chest. The clinics in Turkey which I was in contact with have informed me that the maximum grafts to be extracted from the body are sequentially 1000 grafts from the chest and 500 grafts from the chin. However, I have been informed that the extraction of grafts from the chest causes health damage for the chest even if just 1000 grafts are extracted. In my case, I need that more than 1000 grafts to be extracted from the chest to get a satisfactory result of transplantation. What are the probable health damages of extraction of grafts from the chest? In addition, extraction of grafts from the beard causes scars in the chin. However, the beard will be thinner after the extraction. The beard always hides the skin imperfections and when shaved, the shaving removes the dead skin so the wrinkles are avoided. In fact, my beard is not very thick. Please inform me about the limits of the extraction of grafts from the beard and the chest. How many grafts should be extracted from the beard? How many grafts should be extracted from the chest? Is there any moral impediment to extract hairs from the chest?
  6. Best result in 5 months post op using our DHT technique, Total 5070 grafts used (Scalp + Beard), Patient age : 41yrs, Dr Arika Bansal & Dr Pradeep Sethi - Eugenix Hair Sciences. A 41 years old horse rider came to us for hair restoration. He got a procedure done from us. We have used our trademarked DHT technique and his hair started growing within two months of period. Within 5 months he got a very good appreciable and look change result and according to us still 30% hair are yet to grow and the hair to be thicker. He is also going to do 2nd sitting from us for complete head coverage. No. of Grafts used: 5070 Donor : Scalp + Beard Grafted Area : Front & Mid Scalp Result : 5 months post op Grade : Grade VA/VI
  7. A 45 years old hotelier with advanced grade of baldness approached us for a look change hair restoration along with his hotelier friend. Both of them had the expectations of complete coverage of the bald scalp. The index patient had a big size scalp to be covered. Our experience revealed that he needs close to 10,000 odd grafts for a complete job. We started with covering the front, mid and the anterior part of the crown area. Close to 7890 grafts were planted (from both scalp and beard) over 3 consecutive days. He was informed that the crown would be done later. We had to ensure that the scalp donor does not look over harvesrted and uncosmetic. Also we had to be sure about the final outcome of the beard area. Fortunately, being a hotelier he never wanted to have a beard! Moreover he wanted to cover the baldscalp with hair, which was a long standing wish. The hair started growing by 2-3 months and by 10 months he felt like a new man with hair and renewed confidence and grew moustache as a sign of royal confidence! He has become a very dear friend and wants to share his story with all. Please witness his story in his own words: The following link shows some more results of advanced grade of baldness at Eugenix with Dr Pradeep Sethi and Dr Arika Bansal.
  8. Hi all. Would appreciate advice of some knowledgeable members. Long story short, had a few hts in the 80s and 90s which left me linear scars, depleted donor area and with the need to wear a piece. Had a mega bht session in 2004 which didn’t produce anything mega but still left me me some additional hair. In 2011, had some bht transplanted into the linear scar. This seemed to work pretty well meaning I could cut my remaining scalp hair shorter before the scar becomes noticeable. This allows me to also have the piece cut shorter which I prefer. I’ve been reading a bit about micropigmentation lately and it has me thinking. 1. If I got some ink put in my linear scar, would it increase the illusion of hair to the point that I could cut the remaining scalp hair (and the piece) even shorter? 2. If it does allow me to cut my remaining hair very short (although I wouldn’t like as far as a buzz cut) is it feasible that I could have a procedure to spread my limited remaining donor hair over my scalp to give the “less is more” illusion of hair coverage to allow me ditch the piece. Just for clarity, I have some growing grafts on my scalp. Just not enough on their own to give even the illusion of coverage. Thanks in advance for any help.
  9. Hello folks, Firstly thanks to everyone who provide their opinions regularly on this forum, although this is my first post many of you have provided me with a lot of useful information over the past couple of years. My story: Currently 22 years old male from London, started losing my hair at a very young age, got an FUE transplant at the age of 21!! In this thread I do not want to say who was my chosen surgeon, as I am going to write a full thread on my experience and before/after pictures etc. So at the time of my transplant I was on propecia, but unfortunately I had to stop taking the drug due to sides 6 months ago. I now use Finasteide gel (topical). Anyway, I had 3000 FUE grafts and it was an amazing result, however my hair loss is progressing and it doesn't look as good now. I use toppik and with that it looks good. My plans: So I think a few people will think that my best option would be to wait, but I am planning on getting another hair transplant. My donor area is no longer plentiful, but I have been told I have 3,000-4,000 scalp hair remaining. I am thinking about going to Dr Umar for a transplant consisting of 1/3 scalp and 2/3 beard grafts, and adding density to the whole top of my head. I would keep the hair buzzed down and combine it with temporary smp. Dr Umar said that from the pictures, he estimates this could be achieved with 3,000-4,500 grafts (1/3 scalp, 2/3 beard). My thinking is that, say if I got 4,500 grafts, that would bring my total up to 7,500 grafts. This should provide adequate coverge in the nw5 area, right? The purpose of this thread was to get impartial advice, I am already grateful for all that I have learned from this forum, and would appreciate some advice on my specific case. Cheers, Ronnie
  10. A 54 year old gentleman with NH Grd VII baldness presented to us for hair restoration after having undergone 4 unsuccessful surgeries outside ( 1 FUT; 2 FUE scalp; 1 FUE - body plus scalp; - One of the surgeries included hair being extracted from body as well.) The donor area of the scalp was depleted and only body hair could be taken out for transplantation. So, we extracted body hair from different areas. We did 3395 grafts over 2 days. The distribution of the same was as follows: Beard- 2176 grafts; Chest - 620 grafts; Pubic - 160 grafts; Leg- 336 grafts; Underarms -103 grafts. The surgery went off well. The patient got good results and the patient was very happy even after three months post surgery.
  11. Hi all, I'm 23 years old and probably sitting at a NW5. I am on meds, but they aren't exactly miracle pills. Realistically it is going to be a struggle to get sufficient coverage with an average donor area. This is why I ask the question why not try BHT? The results I've seen are cosmetically good (also I'd be content with a buzz cut). I understand that there are some issues about transplanted body hair being rejected? I'd be willing to take that risk as I don't have many other options. Any thoughts on BHT and particularly about the appropriateness of it for a young man at the higher end of norwood scale would be appreciated. Thanks,
  12. Dr. U’s patient, also known as “Sofarsogood” (on the hair transplant forums) is the world’s first recorded case where leg hair was transplanted as grafts for hairline restoration. He had undergone strip surgery at another clinic. Due to the thickness of hair that was used, the edge of his hairline developed a very pluggy looking appearance. He attempted to keep this hidden by growing the front layers of his hair long and keeping it combed forward. Ultimately he decided to undergo a hair transplant repair surgery and chose Dr. U as his surgeon. Using his signature UGraft technology, Dr. U extracted 1025 grafts of leg hair. These were inserted into a 0.5-1.0 cm margin around the patient’s hairline. Why Leg Hair? Leg hair is much thinner compared to regular head hair. This quality is then able to render a softness which closely resembles the edges of natural hairlines and temples. Because the hairline and temples frame the face, they tend to receive considerable attention from other people. A common complaint that patients express is receiving stares by onlookers which are directed at their surgically crafted hairline. The use of thick hairs tends to produce very precise edging which can look rather contrived. Leg hair, on the other hand is able to create the the irregular fuzzy contour which borders the hairlines and temples of those unaffected by pattern hair loss. Patient After 9 Years “Sofarsogood” underwent his hairline restoration back in 2006. His procedure was even featured in JAMA Dermatology in an article published by Dr. U called, “The Transplanted Hairline: Leg Hair For Improvement.” At the four year point, the patient’s hairline continued to thrive. This year of 2015 is the 9th year following the patient’s surgery. He has recently contacted us and sent these photos showing how his hairline has held up in all these years. Read more about his update and the longevity of body hair grafts here.
  13. Went to the Derm Hair Clinic to have my first HT with Dr. Umar and staff in Redondo Beach, California. 4600 grafts in total. 500 from chest, rest from scalp + beard. At this time I do not have the breakdown between head and beard donor. Surgery took place over four days. Had to add a fourth day because of issues with extracting some of my donor hairs from side of head that were not straight. The first half of the procedure was spent filling out my balding area in the crown using donor from beard and scalp, and the last two days on filling out my receding temples and lowering the hairline using donor from scalp and chest. My intention is to have about 10,000 grafts done in total and the plan with Dr. Umar is to add density for the next round. This is a quick update of my progress, 4.5 months out. I allowed the clinic to publish the results, so I don't want to over document my results here until I am more sure if they intend to use my photos and video or not. Day of 1st HT: 4.5 Months after 1st HT:
  14. I was wondering who the most reputable leg hair transplant doctors in the US were. I'm aware that leg hair transplants are a shaky thing, with failure a high probability, so I do not have high expectations. But I'd be willing to do a trial. I've heard of a Dr. Umar though don't know much about him. What doctors in the US do leg hair transplants, and which ones are the most experienced/have the best reputations?
  15. Folks.. I am looking for recommendations regarding doctors in NJ/NY that would perform Hair transplant using beard or body hair in case donor supply is insufficient. I have read a lot about Dr Umar but he practices in West Coast. I visited Dr Dorin a year back and he mentioned that I might not be a good candidate and recommended that I should try medications first. I used Rogaine for a year. Do not see a significant change. (But I would recommend anyone who is reading this and is in early stage of balding to try it. Worst case scenario is that it won't work! Haven't observed any major side effect) Also, I might get a chance to visit India soon (Mumbai, Hyderabad). If anyone knows about a good doctor, can you please provide the details. Thanks a lottt in advance !!
  16. been suffering with losing my hair for so long. such a simple thing, so hard to get over right? anyways… these days, i'm shaving my head down to a zero every few days… i use a bit of caboki in the small bald patch i have in the front in back and i'm feeling a little better overall. the minoxidil i'd been using for a decade finally started to stop working. i don't want to get a hair transplant. it seems like it is a bit of a never ending road… needing new procedures as you lose more hair over the years. but… i realized that i would consider having the patches in my beard filled in and then would just keep shaving my head and have a decent beard and be done with it and get old. i'm 39 now. my conundrum started when i realized that i could likely have some white dot scarring in the donor areas from a FUE beard transplant. i spoke to one surgeon in nyc and he recommended 600-900 grafts to fill in the patches in my beard. it's not much. i'm wondering what some of you might consider the best approach to doing this. i don't have chest hair, so a BHT is out, unless i do pubic hair, but i haven't found anyone who does or recommends this. i spoke yesterday to the guy who does Dr. jeff shapiro's consultations and he told me that 9/10 of dr. shapiro's patients don't have any noticeable scarring from the specific type of FUE that he does. great news, but is it true? anyway, he is in florida or booked for ages in NYC. i'm looking for a surgeon in NYC or southern california if possible. thanks for all of your input in advance, i appreciate it. seems like this could be solved. so, to sum up, i'm looking for a recommendation for a beard transplant in NYC or SOCAL and i'm wondering your thoughts on donor area scarring. i'm finally coming to terms with being bald. i don't want to fuck up my head anymore now that i'm looking to get my beard filled in. can BHT be done to a beard with pubic hair? i have plenty and it's thick. i have leg hair too but it doesn't seem as thick. anyways… have a great day people and i thank you again. peace.
  17. Many, if not all, on here know that Dr. Umar is top notch for BHT's. I have tried looking at as many results and procedures as possible (been bored past couple of days). I noticed beard and chest are the areas of the body used to extract hair but I was wondering if anyone has heard of patients using leg hair? I am just curious... as a middle eastern man I have a thick beard and ironically barely any chest and arm hair (both upper and lower, weird I know) however I do have a lot of upper and lower leg hair. In my opinion, not thinking as a Doctor/surgeon, I assume I could use my excessive leg hair for an FUE procedure but any thoughts of the use of any part outside beard and chest grafts?
  18. Hi All I am looking for close up shots of beard and body hair donor sites AFTER healing and can only find vague out of focus shots or shots with hair covering up the tiny scars...any links to some real pics? thanks...Fugly;)
  19. Greetings all I am new to the forums & been reading for awhile now...anyway I am a veteran HT patient going back to the 80's with plugs from Bosley then double flap surgery at Fleming/Mayer so consequently I have extensive scarring and slightly better than horrific results. Last week I underwent a 1200 graft strip surgery (last one) to rebuild temple points and try to soften the bold hairline however the surgeon really wants no part in scar/lump or FUE repair where the flaps were rotated into place...the lumps actually make the divits from the scars look much deeper and the hair always parts there along with growing in a backward direction as opposed to forward. And since most of my donor hair has been depleted BHT will have to be an option. Hasson/Wong turned me away, Umar said 5500 grafts to start with...no one is addressing the scars other than trying to cover them up. Any recommendations and opinions from a few more experts would be appreciated as my goals at this point are fairly modest. Feel free to comment on the pics below Comment from one doc already "you were raped" very true:)
  20. Hi there, I was wondering if there is any latest news on the efficacy of BHT (Body Hair Transplant in case I got my acronym wrong). I dont have a great deal of donar hair left (dont have a great deal of hair period) but do have plenty of body hair. The latest information I could find is about 3-4 years old. Does anyone know if this is becoming a safer/more reliable or better documented procedure. Any info would be great, thanks guys
  21. Guys check this out. i had seen in the past a video from this guy but this is after 2 years from his last BHT repair with dr Umar. the guy was messed up, completeley butchered and depleted from strips and scalp reductions and look at the repair work. Unbelievable
