  1. Hi all, Just thought I would share a little bit about what I know about the hair replacement industry in Melbourne, Australia and how I decided to go on my own DIY path to avoid getting ripped off by the salons. My intention is to help the brothers living in Melbourne who would be interested in getting an affordable a hair system but don't know where to start. My hair replacement journey started last year. I had always shaved my head ever since I noticed my hair loss. I had the clean shaven look for more than 5 years, but one day when I scrolled through Facebook and saw videos of guys getting a hair system and I was so impressed by how drastic the look can change (in a positive way), and ever since I had always wanted to get a hair system myself. If you are like me and you live in Melbourne, you probably have already Googled a lot of men's hair replacement salons. In this big, developed, most livable city to live in the world for 7 consecutive years, there are a total of shockingly THREE specialised hair replacement salons. One in South Yarra (M. System), one near the city on St Kilda Road (PH+) and the other one is in Mt Waverley (This one trades under 3 names: EZW, B&H, or HRA - look at the address on their website, all points to the same location - later on I found out the reason why they built so many websites and trade under many names is because they have very bad reviews on Google). Therefore if you have not already gone to one, there's a high possibility you probably have ended up in the other two. Because there are only 3 salons in total, they're only competing against each other, and therefore you'll end up paying about the same amount of money to which ever you go to, which is: $595 for a stock system + $90 for a cut-in. That'll be around nearly $700 AUD (or ~$500 USD) for your first unit, excluding care and maintenance products. All of them will encourage you to come back for a clean up/redo every 2 or 3 weeks, and they'll charge you around $90 for a service like that. When I asked them would I receive training on how to take it off and put it back on and what I should do for maintenance, their response was: "you can come in and we'll do it for you, why do you have to do it yourself". Then every 2 3 months, you'll have to replace your hair system again. All and all, if you decide to leave all the work to the salons, you should have a spare $5000 AUD a year (roughly $3500 USD). I calculated based on 4x 0.08mm French Lace/Thin Skin stock unit which would last you around 3 months. Again, this amount is justifiable for fellas who earn big cash and value their time more. But if you're already strained by other things financially, then this option would not be really viable. In saying that, for my first hair replacement unit, I actually purchased and used the service from the salon in Mt Waverley. The one I went with was French Lace, because I wanted some breathability. I specifically asked for 100%, but surprisingly they told me all of their stock unit comes in 130%, so it was very, very thick and super unnatural. Their color #1 - Jetblack was so black nobody would believe it was real, and the hairline was completely not graduated. They did a few measurements on my head, and cut the hair unit to my size right on the spot by placing it on a mannequin head and used scissors/pricision knife to cut it. They did not even make a template from my head and gave it to me. When they attached the unit on my head using tape, I could feel a thick layer between the unit and my head, and while they were doing the cut in, the hair line lifted, which they eventually had to take it off and reattach it back. After I left the salon, the hairline lifted again, and when I looked closely, there were spots in the hairline that made it looks so fake and obvious, and the hair was so thick that it completely looked like a drag queen wig. Have a look: Over the next few days, I was under constant stress and anxiety because of how bad and detectable the hairline looked. I wore a hat to work and didn't want to take it off. And when I took the shower for the first time, the whole thing came straight off. Luckily I had also ordered some walker tape and a bottle of ghost bond in preparation for events like this, so I took it off and did the attachment again myself. This stock unit lasted me for 3 weeks because I couldn't handle the stress having to wear a hair system so fake. I ended up ordering a 0.03mm VLoop Ultra Thin Skin online from LH to replace the one I had. The hair quality was 100% better and the color was great. When the unit arrived, my little brother helped me make a template, and so the only thing left to do was to cut the unit down to my size and look for a place to do the cut in. Again, I inquired the above three salons again whether they'd be happy to do a cut in for a unit from a third party: 1) M. System in South Yarra straight off told me they don't do cut-in for units that are not from them (appreciate the honesty) 2) EZW, or HRA, or B&H in Mt Waverley told me they'd do it for $395. 3) PH+ on St Kilda Road, Melbourne told me they'd do it for me for $300. When I asked why he would charge such a high amount for a cut in, the guy said it's the opportunity cost that he's losing. If he spent one hour doing a cut-in attachment for me, that one hour could be spent on a booking that would get him $700 revenue. At this point I was stuck, because didn't want to just spend that much every time I want to do a cut in. So I inquired another wig shop (Chiqu**) in Malvern - the reason why I didn't mention this shop earlier is because they specialise in wig, but mainly women wig. They said the cut in would be $125, the attachment would be $90. That seemed to be cheaper than the other options I had, so I brought my unit in for a consultation, and I was convinced for another $35, they could cut the unit to the template for me. They also take no responsibility during the cut-in process because the unit was not purchased from them. I agreed to do that. On the day of the cut-in, I brought the unit to the shop, and lady there cut the unit down to the size for me. She admitted that was the first time she saw a unit that delicate (0.03mm ultra thin skin). And during the cut in, she shredded a bunch of hair from that unit, and it caused a massive bald spot right at the hair line. The hair cut was not impressive at all and the blending wasn't even good. Overall, that was a good unit that was destroyed by the hairdresser. Over the next few days, I started sending emails like crazy to many many salons in Melbourne - the normal ones, not the ones that specialise in wig. I don't believe there was none that couldn't do a proper hair cut for me. Because, after all, it's still hair on your head. A lot of the places didn't respond. Some of them responded and said they are not specialised in wig cut. 2 or 3 places responded and said they could do it for me, and that's how I found my current hairdresser. I met her for the first time to fix the haircut from the 0.03mm ultra thin skin unit. I was completely in love the first place. She's been trained in wig cut and she's done some wig cut for photoshoots before, and she is a hair stylist and not just a barber, so when she fixed the hair cut and put some products in it, I was completely stoke because it turned out exactly how I wanted, and the quality looked great just like those hair system before/after videos you see on Instagram or Facebook. She charges no where near ridiculous like the ones that the other places charged (hint: she charges the same amount as she would for a normal haircut, and every 2 or 3 week when I come back just for cleaning up the side and the back, I only pay half what I would pay for a normal cut in). Ever since, I have switched to my current unit which is 0.08mm thin skin for a little more durability (the hairline is detectable, but won't be as much if you style the hair forward - but I think I'll go with French Lace next). I've learned how to do the detach/re-attach myself and I do it once a week, so all and all that's a massive cost cut for me. Here's the photo of me with the unit on and the blending at the back. I would say I'm norwood 6, but with a stylish haircut and great blending, I feel much more confident and I look much younger. I am honest and I tell everyone who ask that I wear a hair system, most of them were shocked because of how nice the hair and the cut-in quality is, and they just don't care that you wear a hair system. So I have been very happy and confident with my new look. I've started working out and started dating, and I have had no issue with the unit so far apart from the occasional hairline lifting and the detectable hairline (because I'm wearing 0.08mm thin skin), but that's the general issue with all units. To conclude this long post, I just want to say, learn how to DIY and save yourself a lot of money, don't bite the bullet and strain yourself and go to expensive specialised hair salons when the quality of the work is the same, if not worse than when you do it by yourself. Learn the basics, watch videos, buy your own maintenance supplies, there are many free resources on this forum and on Youtube. Find a hairdresser to do the cut in for you - they're not just limited to those specialised salons, they exist in normal salons as well, and they even come with higher skills because they're the ones who go through proper training and normally enter competitions and won some awards (mine does and I love her so much). I won't be selfish and keep her to myself, so if you live in Melbourne South East want to have her contact, drop me a message. Otherwise, if you have got your own stylist and know how to do most of the maintenance work yourself, congrats and well done!

    Melbourne Hair system

Hey everyone! first time user here. Long story short I'm in my early 20's a severely suffering hair loss. I wear a hat everyday and the dread of losing my hair controls my life. I currently use concealers but I am almost at the point where I can no longer use them as my hair is almost gone in some areas. I have been spending months researching non-surgical hair replacement as I am not a candidate for hair transplant, I'm 22 and almost bald. There are just so many questions I have, I just would love to mean someone in melbourne who wears one and gain a proper insight. Everyone seems to like them for the first few months and then you don't hear much. I would like to know where the best place in Melbourne is to go and how to manage prices as i'm still a student and won't be able to afford the weekly cut ins and what not. Any advice would be appreciated, just sick of worrying about it all the time.
  3. Long shot but has anyone had any experience with a clinic performing PRP and A-CELL treatment in Australia? Trying to find a reputable clinic but like most things here in the land of Oz we seem to be way behind the trend.
  4. Hi there! A couple of years back I underwent scalp micropigmentation, however after deciding that I still miss having 'hair' I am considering investing in a human hair hair replacement system. I am hoping that there may be someone else who wears a system based around the Wollongong/Sydney area who may be able to give me advice on getting a system 'cut in'. A google search of hairdressers who cater to hair systems has come up empty other than the companies which make you buy from them direct here in Australia. Could someone please help me... I honestly don't even know where to start to get more info on this and having never ordered a hair system before it looks as though they come as a 'full head of hair' that needs to be cut and styled. Thank you!
  5. Hi Guys, I'm interested in possibly undergoing FUE HT and am looking for any feedback/recommendations of surgeons in Australia. I am located in Melbourne Has anyone dealt with Dr Alam in Melbroune? Any feedback would be much appreciated. Thanks!
  6. Hi All, So I have been lurking in the shadows for quite some time now waiting to see if i should one day take the daunting step of undergoing a hair transplant. I first started noticing hairloss around the age of 24, when my barber brushed my hair back revealing a very noticeable receding hairline in the temples to which I just about fell off the chair in horror. From that point I went straight into research mode and educated myself on every way possible to prevent / slow this confidence hindering genetic ailment. Unfortunately for me I have a very large head and features and short hair / shaven does not suit me whatsoever! I need my hair  I have been religiously using propecia and minoxidil since I was 24. I shampoo with revita every day and every 4th day or so mix in some Nizoral 2%. I am very big on health supplements and vitamins and their role in inhibiting DHT conversion and general health and my current regime consist of pumpkin seed oil, fenugreek extract, stinging nettle root, ashwaghanda, shilijit, biotin, primrose oil and saw palmetto. I also take hair covets tablets just for some over kill. I turn 29 in a few months and believe that I have dramatically reduced my potential hair loss. If not for these supplements I believe I would be a Norwood 3 or worse. But really that is just an assumption. I am a Norwood 2 now. I always thought I would wait until I was at least 30 years old until I seriously considered the HT route. Given I will be 29 and my hair loss does not seem to be dramatically worsening I figure why not now? I am single, I can take time off work mid 2017, I have the money and really just want to leave that burden of always wondering if my hair is still perfectly in place to hide my receding temples (I can style my hair as to conceal most of the loss). My philosophy is you only live once, and given the fact I will be entering my 30s in the coming years I want to fully regain my confidence and lets be honest - look better. But I am also not naive and want to make an educated and informed decision. If I undergo a HT now to restore my hairline I know there is a very good chance I will require more in the future. This does not exactly worry me as I believe the next 10 years will be the prime of my life given the fact I am single, have worked hard all my 20’s to become somewhat financially ‘adequate,’ wanting to travel and just want that little bit of confidence back that I am sure most of you can relate too. I could wait until I am 35 / 40.. but feel it may be somewhat of a waste my glory days by then. So, this is where I would appreciate your opinion – is it wise for me to go ahead with such a procedure given my age, supplement regime and attached pictures? As I am located in Australia I was leaning towards an FUE procedure with Dr Laorwong from Absolute Hair Clinic in Bangkok. I have read positive reviews from this forum from another Australian and he is a member of the ABHRS. Any input would be greatly appreciated. I have attached some pics with wet hair to fully show the hair loss. If i underwent the procedure i would opt to not shave my head (only the donor area) as i would like to hide this from everyone
  7. Hi guys, I am considering doing a fue HT and would love some feed back on who is a great surgeon to see in Australia (if any)? I would really appreciate feed back on any experiences and recommendations! I had previously had an fut treatment done about 4 years ago and although there were some results the overall result was a bit disappointing. Now I would like to do fue into the previous fut scar area as it shows up if i clipper my hair any shorter than a 4mm and also put grafts into the thinning areas on the scalp. I have a consultation with dr Vikram at the Knudsen clinic in a couple of weeks time. Has anyone used him or heard from previous patients? I have read on forums that dr Path in Bangkok is also good but noticed he seems to mainly do fut work. I would really appreciate any feed back as I am a bit lost at the moment and don't want to make a mistake going to the wrong doctor again. Please Help.
  8. Firstly, I felt a huge relief upon finding this site. I'm not real good with navigating myself around but will do my best. I live in Perth Australia and are seeking hair transplants to repair receding line and thinning on top. I found a lady here named Dr Jennifer Martinick. I became concerned when reading negative comments in relation to some her ethics. Please don't construe this as I think negative of her work. Why I have considered surgery for several years it's only as of late I decided it's happening. I found a surgeon Dr Damkerng Pathomvanich in Bangkok that appears to have nothing but glowing reports. Can anyone with experience please lead me on a good direction. Thank you for your help.
  9. Hi there, As the title portrays I am an Australian guy who is looking to undergo a hair transplant. I would love to hear from any fellow Australian's who have undergone this procedure and which doctor and method they recommend. From my research on this site travelling abroad is the best option and Dr Path in Bangkok, Thailand seems to be a good choice due to the cost, skill level and close proximity. However I am open to all suggestions as this is a massive step and would like to be well informed before I make any commitments. Also, I would like to know which technique (FUT/FUE) would be better suited to a 28 year old Norwood I/II? I have the typical genetic mpb: receding hairline at the temples in a V shape. If it not overall noticeable when I style my hair however if I brush it back it just about kills me ha (absolutely hate getting a hair cut!). I supplement with propecia, minoxidil, revita and nizoral aswell as herbal supplements. I am concerned about the scar being noticeable if I undergo FUT (i have a short back and sides blade 3) - and also limiting potentially donor area's if I want further HT's in the future. But on the other hand I really do not want to shave my entire head if I do FUE (I plan on doing this procedure in secret ). Is it possible to shave only the donor area (back of head) and leave the recipient area long (top).. as the new hair will be transplanted in front of my existing hairline? Sorry for the bombardment of questions I would really appreciate some guidance and advice. Any advice of the best dr's, procedures, experiences coming from Aust would be most appreciated! Thank you in advance.
  10. Hi All, I would like to share my hair loss journey with fellow hair loss suffers. I had the privilege of having my HT with Dr Radha of Visakhapatnam, India About of info about me: I’m an Aussie from down under (Australia) I have been suffering hair loss from the age of 19. I have been on Propecia for about six years which gave me a full head of hair again. After six years, I started bad side effects which affected my man hood….Not good! I stopped Propecia and used Rogaine which seemed to have stopped or slowed down my hair loss but definitely did not regrow any hair. After using Rogaine for about two years, I thought I’d see what my hair would be like without the use of Rogaine. In about a year after stopping Rogaine, I lost a lot of my hair from the front of my hair – refer to my pre op pictures. Being a hair loss sufferer, it really affected me emotionally and physically, so I thought I’d do a search Google for a solution. I stumbled on this marvellous site and thanks to fellow hair loss sufferers, for sharing their hair loss journey; I felt really inspired and was on the search for a Dr that would perform my HT. Research: After looking over lots of HT results by patients, I found Dr Radha was highly praised and produced great results. I was truly inspired by one of Dr Radha’s patients – JacobG who has similar hair loss to me and is another fellow Aussie =) Jacob has offered me loads of support and advice..so thanks Jacob! Inital contact with Dr Radha: After contacting Dr Radha with photos my hair loss photos, I booked 18/11/13 for the date of the procedure. Dr Radha required $200AUD to secure the date. Just a FYI Dr Radha is extremely busy and it may take her upto a week to reply to emails…but be patient! India Visa: I applied for a Tourist Visa which approx cost $100 all up Flights to and from Visakhapatnam: I chose Singapore Airlines and SilkAir expect to pay approx $1135 to $1350 return Hotel Accommodation: I wanted something nice and comfortable, so I searched Tripadvisor and found Novotel Visakhapatnam which has excellent reviews. Novotel has a midday checkout, so I suggest a cheap hotel that you can spend 8 hrs while you wait for your 11pm departure. I stayed with Jukasotel Hotel. I probably wouldn’t recommend Novotel. I pretty much stayed in the room the whole time, as there is nothing that is walking distance other than the beach. I would recommend something that is close to restaurants and shops. Things to buy/bring before the trip: - Travel pillow - Pain killers - Sleeping tablets - Snapback cap that sits high - Johnson & Johnson baby shampoo - Shirts with buttons that run top to bottom The BIG DAY: Dr Radha’s driver was unable to pick me up, so Dr Radha organised my transportation with the hotel staff. Dr Radha advised to be at her clinic at 8:30am I was greeted by one of Dr Radha’s staff who provided me with some forms to fill out, slippers to wear, change of clothes for the procedure, washed my head and performed my blood test for HIV. At about 10:30 I met the famous Dr Radha which I must admit, I was kinda star struck LOL I guess it’s because I’ve been waiting 8+ months for this day. Dr Radha took pictures of my head and I provided photos of what I use to look like before the hair loss. Dr Radha inspected my hair and to my disappointment she gave me some bad news; she said that I have a combination of things going against me such as: Caucasian skin colour with black asian hair( my hair grows like an afro) and very low density in the donor area (All my relatives on my mum’s side have hair low density) I was hoping for 4000+ grafts but she told me to expect only 2,500 grafts =( But on the upside she mentioned before the hair loss, I probably would of only had approx 4000 grafts, so with 2,500 grafts it is more than 50% of what I originally had =) Procedure: Strip removal took approx 2 hours and felt absolutely no pain during the removal of the strip. Had a quick lunch break and back to the operating theatre for the placement of the grafts. For the first Four hours, I ended up falling asleep but then woke up because of slight back pain. Graft placement took 5 hours. At the start, during and end of the procedure, Dr Radha and her staff were very friendly, professional and always checked on me to make sure I’m comfortable. Donor Strip: 28cm long and narrow strip was removed 1 hair grafts: 1300 2 hair grafts: 1384 3 hair grafts: 23 1st night of sleeping: I highly recommend a travel pillow, so that the travel pillow rests on your neck and not on the back of your head. Take sleeping tablets if you can acquire some. 1st day Post Op: Dr Radha’s driver picked me up from the hotel for the 1st hair wash which was performed by Dr Radha’s assistant. Dr Radha checked on me and provided me with some Post Op instructions Post Op Day 1 to 10: I was extremely careful to not touch/knock my recipient area. I only wore a cap when going out in public. Slept as much as possible to help healing of donor area, and to avoid the possibility of something or someone touching/knocking my head. About Dr Radha: I found her to be very professional, friendly, down to earth and very caring about your health and well-being. I can see why people speak very highly of her and i would not hesitate to recommend her for people who are considering a FUT.
