Advice for Hair Loss Sufferers Considering Hair Transplant Surgery

My Story

  1. Has anyone had PRP without Acell in the crown area? My crown is thinning and have heard PRP can really help in slowing or stopping the hair loss. Just wondering who’s had it and what your experience was? I’ve also heard doing it with Acell is better to, but it’s more expensive too.
  2. Long shot but has anyone had any experience with a clinic performing PRP and A-CELL treatment in Australia? Trying to find a reputable clinic but like most things here in the land of Oz we seem to be way behind the trend.
  3. Im considering in taking the Hair Regenaration treatment offered by Dr. Amiya Prasad, his treatment promises to thicken thinning hair and states that it is a standalone procedure with a duration of 3-5 years or maybe more (since that is the time he says he has been administering and monitoring the results of the treatment). He seem s to be a serious doctor and is well regarded in the internet, I would like to know if anyone knows anything about the veracity of the treatment, as well as if there are any possible side effects or shedding related to this type of procedures (prp + acell+vitamin d) here is his page Hair Restoration | Hair regrowth - New York
  4. Hi All, I have been following this website for a little over a month and read through all possible threads, surgeons, experiences etc. I got 3368 grafts with Dr. Cooley and will try to be succinct in my post. About me I am a 32 year old male who has been losing hair from the vertex going outward. I still have hair in the front, and this according to Dr. Cooley was a preferred hair loss pattern. I tried rogaine (foam and solution) 3 years ago and developed rashes and acne, and am skeptical about propecia so already have that off the table. Thus, my objectives were stated and expectations calibrated keeping these in mind. Which Surgeon? I live in NC so Dr. Vories and Dr. Cooley were obvious options. Additionally, I am originally from India so Dr. Bhatti was in the mix as well. I did not consider docs in Europe due to logistics and possible complications. My first meeting was with Bosley - it was good because they gave me information about hair transplant and better because they seemed like an assembly line which meant I should stay away from them. Dr. Bhatti has very good reviews but having lived in India all my life, I must confess that given an option and less binding monetary constraints, I have a slight preference for the US when it comes to cosmetic procedures for which, the medical guidelines are not as well defined in India. Again, this is purely my personal opinion and in no way reflects the quality of work performed by Dr. Bhatti. I met with Lollie at Dr. Cooley's and felt comfortable enough to go with him without even meeting Dr. Vories. I understand he is extremely good but I had a good feeling about Dr. Cooley, was able to get a date within 2 weeks due to a cancellation, and was willing to take a few weeks of pain and sutures. Finally, I am a bit of a sucker for active researchers - not to say that newly researched methods always work but at least it says something about the doc. We agreed to 3000 grafts and I additionally decided to have the PRP (given my reluctance to get on propecia). During Procedure As has been mentioned time and again, Dr. Cooley is very professional. I was scheduled for 3000 grafts, he told me we could harvest 3500 and cover the crown better but the marginal effect of that may not justify the cost. Given that a surgeon's job is to do surgery, it's always nice to hear one say we don't have to do it, or don't have to do all of it. Thus, we decided to stick to 3000, which resulted in 3368 grafts. Dr. Cooley thought it was best to spread the grafts uniformly throughout the top to provide density, reinforce the hairline, and put some in the crown. Below are some pics from before and right after the procedure. The procedure was painless; we started around 7.45am and finished at 6.15pm. Barring a small window (of 15-30 minutes I think) Dr. Cooley was there the whole day, and worked on the implants along with Brandi. Brandi left late afternoon and Dr. Cooley finished the job himself. Much has been said about docs performing the procedure themselves or having it done by techs. Agreed that Dr. Cooley did not implant all the grafts himself but in response to my question, he mentioned that his HT was done entirely by his techs. This bestows plenty of credibility in the capability of his staff. Here is a break-down of the nos.: 1's - 833 2's - 1640 3's - 239 4's - 20 D's (Doubles) - 327 Dr. Cooley mentioned that the Ds are 1+2 so count as double follicular units, resulting in an equivalent of 3368 grafts. On a separate note, I would like to mention that Dr. Cooley treats the patients well. Apart from putting up in a hotel, the shampoo, condition, spray etc. are provided at no charge. Ailene and Dr. Cooley have been extremely responsive over emails and have promptly addressed my concerns. This may be a standard practice but after shelling out this kind of money, it's good to see that you're not being "nickel and dimed" over petty expenses. Days 2-4 I am now day 4 (counting procedure as day 1) post-op. I have been spraying the solution every 45 min to an hour and 1.5 hours in the night. I reduced the frequency today to once every 2-3 hours. In the follow-up, I asked for more spray and Dr. Cooley was happy to oblige. I have to confess, so far, I am really happy with Dr. Cooley's work. I do not notice any swelling and haven't had to take any pain medication at all. I was able to sleep in the bed with my head on the pillow (with a airline pillow around my neck), and did not experience any pain or discomfort. I'd like to thank everyone for posts and questions. I learned immensely from this site and am happy to address any questions anyone has. Of course, I may not have researched as extensively or met as many docs as some of the other members, but am happy to share my experiences and help in any way I can. More updates will follow as things change. Cheers!
  5. Patients often wonder how magnified images taken during their initial consultation translate into the results seen online. This 37-year-old man can be seen before and after his follicular unit transplantation (FUT) procedure with Dr. Carlos Wesley. The magnified images of his donor area (first magnified image) and recipient area (following image) prior to his surgery and taken during his initial consultation can be seen below. The last magnified image shows the recipient area (frontal) after his (FUT) procedure in which both platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and ACell were used as storage solution.
  6. Nearly one decade after having a transplant with a different North American surgeon, this patient eventually decided that he was fed up with the exposed grafts throughout his hairline and wanted to do something about it. He can be seen before and only six (6) months after his 1836 -graft FUT procedure with Dr. Carlos Wesley. During the surgery, his hair follicles were incubated in PRP and ACell.
  7. A 30-year-old male wanted to better conceal his thinning scalp. However, he was somewhat averse to surgery and was a borderline surgical candidate due to the density and hair caliber within his donor area. He, therefore, underwent a platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and ACell Matristem mesotherapy procedure followed by skin micro pigmentation (SMP) in our office. His transformation can be viewed in the video below.
  8. Much debate surrounds the efficacy of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) in the treatment of hair loss. This patient underwent a series of PRP treatments with Dr. Carlos Wesley. In addition to both PRP and ACell, two activation and stimulation measures during the procedures helped this patient achieve more fullness in the crown of his scalp without any surgical intervention. Dr. Wesley believes that much of PRP's efficacy stems from proper patient selection. Scalp examination under a magnified lens can reveal evidence of not only candidate miniaturized hairs, but also dried keratinocytes surrounding hair follicles. These findings are two in a series that help suggest whether or not patients may respond favorably to targeted PRP therapy.
  9. This 31-year-old had grown frustrated by the progressive thinning of the hair throughout the frontal half of his scalp. A 2215 micro graft procedure with Dr. Carlos Wesley helped fill in not only his hairline, but also regions of future loss within the patient's mid scalp region. His results can be seen approximately 16 months after his follicular unit transplantation (FUT) procedure in which both platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and ACell were used as storage solution.
  10. This 28-year-old female came to our office fed up with her progressive and distressing hair loss. She was referred to our office by an endocrinologist. After examination with a magnified folliscope, Dr. Wesley determined that she may be a good candidate for treatment with platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and ACell. She returned just over five (5) months after her treatment for follow-up evaluation. Her results can be viewed below:
  11. I'm a 48 year old female and visited Dr. Cooley's office for a consultation on having a hair transplant for thinning hair on top behind the hair line. Before I left I placed a $500 deposit on an Acell/PRP injection treatment that will cost $2500 total. Getting back home, i'm not finding a lot of information about the success of the procedure. In the office, it sounded like it was a proven treatment that would make my hair grow back in and increase the diameter of my current hair. Looking online at different articles, I'm seeing that many doctors have stopped offering PRP treatments --- I'm assuming for lack of results. Does anyone have encouraging, positive experiences with this stand alone treatment?
  12. Here's a rather interesting finding over the past year in our office that I thought I would share with the community. Although it's purely anecdotal at this stage, I have observed that when incubated in platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and ACell during their out-of-body time, transplanted hair follicles appear less likely to shed early in the postoperative process. For illustration, here is an FUE patient of mine who, in one day, had 2060 FU transplanted throughout his frontal half. He returned over a month later (a period before which micro graft shaft shedding had occurred in years past) and very few (if any) of the transplanted hair shafts had fallen out. This provided an early framing of this patient's face as the transplanted hair length closely matched that of his surrounding pre-existing hairs. An observation that our office will certainly explore in more detail...
  13. Hello, I have seen a few other posts in this forum regarding PRP/ACELL. Some say that it provides a substantial benefit, some say the jury is still out. I am scheduled for 2,500 graphs with Dr. Cooley in March. I elected to get the PRP/ACELL for an additional $1,500, which isn't that much in the grand scheme of things. I wanted to know if anyone has actually undergone PRP/ACELL and can share their thoughts/opinions on it? I am not so much hoping to grow any new hair out of it (although it would of course be nice) but rather to help minimize any scarring and prevent shockloss. Dr. Cooley is a big proponent of the procedure, but a lot of other well respected doctor's say it is not effective. I don't mind spending the money, but perhaps the money would better be spent on some more graphs. Although, that of course gets into the issue of not doing too many graphs and depleting my donor hair in case I need it in the future. Pictures of my hair in its current state can be found on my profile page. Thank you!
  14. "Hair duplication" formerly known as "autocloning" coupled with ACell has been a hot topic of discussion amongst patients and hair restoration physicians due to its potential to provide hair loss sufferers with an unlimited donor hair supply and a full head of hair. But how does hair duplication work and has there been any success with it lately? Below, Coalition member Dr. Jerry Cooley provides the community with indepth insight on the procedure and some success he's been having with it. For more information on the procedure and its potential including photos, visit the below link. "Updates on Hair Duplication (AutoCloning) and ACell: Hope For a Hair Loss Cure – By Dr. Jerry Cooley" What is your opinion? We look forward to your input. Best wishes, Bill
  15. Hello everyone! Dr. Cooley completed my 1st HT 3 days ago, and I have finally gotten around to updating my site and uploading pictures. Check out my Hair Transplant Website for lots more photos and info. I traveled to Charlotte July, 26th to meet with Dr. Cooley and discuss final plans and make sure my expectations were in line with reality. Dr. Cooley is a great guy and very easy to talk to. This man is the real deal. He stood by the recommendation that 2000 grafts would look great. I had budgeted to go as high as 3000 grafts and he agreed to be flexible and take out more than 2000 if possible and work a little farther back into my existing hair. After the final consultation, I headed over to the hotel. The hotel that Dr. Cooley's office uses for out of town patients is stellar. The patient consultant, Lollie, told me that they always have about 2 patients staying there on most days and that they always treat his patients well. Totally true. When checking in, the staff noted that everything was paid in advance and very warmly set up the early morning shuttle for the next day. They said if I needed anything, let them know- Dr. Cooley's patients are their VIPs. That felt great. It was still the afternoon so I took a quick trip to the mall to grab a button up shirt for procedure day and then took in a movie to kill time. About 9:00 went to sleep with the alarm set for 5:30 to get up and get ready for procedure. I woke up early and scrubbed down in the shower with Hibiclens and got into my stylish sweatpants and headed down for a big breakfast. The hotel picked me up at 6:45 sharp and we made the long 3 minute trek to Dr. Cooley's office. One of the techs, Stephanie, greeted me at the door and double checked the consent forms and, most importantly, helped me make out my movie list and lunch order. Dr. Cooley then came in and went over our plan one more time, gave me some valium, demerol and other fun stuff and then took the "before" photos. We got into the surgery room and gave me the Versed intravenously and prepped for excision. Dr. Cooley uses a very cool vibrating/massaging thing that distracts you from the needle that gives the local anesthetic. I have heard plenty of people talk here about that being the worst part and I can honestly say, I hardly felt any of the injections all day. I was conscious through the excision but very relaxed and wasn't bothered at all. It went by very quickly and the next thing I knew, Dr. Cooley was making the recipient incisions. Next he and the lead tech, Brandi, were placing grafts while 8 other techs prepared the FUs. Dr. Cooley was in the room placing with Brandi nearly the whole day. When he had to step out for a while, another experienced tech, Amy pitched in. From start to finish, I was there 11.5 hours. It seemed to fly by and everyone was so great I actually enjoyed my time there. Dr. Cooley ended up extracting 2508 FUs and covered an are of approximately 50 cm2 for a density averaging 50fu/cm2. I think I had slightly higher than average hairs per FU. The breakdown is: 1s - 413 2s - 1030 3s - 837 4/5s - 228 for a total of 2508 grafts and 5896 hairs. Dr. Cooley said the donor was closed with "no tension at all" which made me very happy. He used Acell in the wound. The next day a friend in the medical profession looked at it and said "That looks like a wound that has been healing for 2 weeks not 24 hours" so needless to say, I am thrilled and hope it continues to heal well. As it is now, I have a hard time finding it just to put the antibiotic on. I couldn't believe how clean everything looked when he was finished. No bleeding, everything just looked neat and tidy. I couldn't have been happier. After being so worried in the weeks building up to this day, I couldn't have wished for a smoother procedure.
  16. I had my HT surgery about 1 yr 6months back in Hyderabad, Inida by Dr. Ashok Reddy. The whole head was covered instead of concentrating on the frontal part. The doc didn't give the graft count. Since the whole head was covered the density is low. Here are the pics of my present hair. Additional pictures are available on my hair loss website. Unfortunately, I don't have my just post op pics. As you can see from the pics I am NW6 I think. I have a large balding area on the crown. Besides, hair above my ears is thin. This makes my donor supply limited. What should be my plan of action now. Here are the options I am contemplating. 1) Get another HT and increase the frontal density. For the crown use a partial hair system or sth. 2) Shave my head and do away with HTs. But I don't want my scar to be visible. The scar is not that big but it is not flat. The scar tissue protrudes out. If get micro pigmentation, I think it would still be noticeable. I am thinking of having a scar revision with ACell. As Acell produces a flat scar, in my opinion with micro pigmentation it can be concealed well. 3) Wear a hair system, without any further procedures. ....................................................................................................................
