Advice for Hair Loss Sufferers Considering Hair Transplant Surgery

My Story

  1. Hi everyone, want to share my experience regarding a 2500 graft iFUE at Dr. Harald Eberson which i did last summer (July 21/22 2016) in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Quick intro: Currently 33, was 32 last summer and the first signs of baldness started showing slowly around age 20 when my hairline was receding and around age 27 the crown started getting thinner and so did the entire scalp on top. I did read on possible remedies but was never attracted to finasteride for example due to the potential negative side effects. I'd rather be bald than having even a minor chance of suffering from those. The thinning and receding hairline did not impact me heavily but I did always promise myself when the time (and $ in the bank) is right, I would do a hair restoration regardless, at least to ensure a nice frame for the face. On my dad's side most guys are pretty much Norwood 4-5, and my mom's side less to none, but the idea of doing an FUE was to restore the look/appearance. Getting balder, about 2 years ago I started using fibers, which made a huge difference. It impacted my confidence more than I thought it would and everything looked good. However, with the process continuing, I started to lack hairs in the front to actually make the use if fibers nice and natural. That's the moment I knew: It's time for more fire power: an FUE. A few pics of the BEFORE situations WITHOUT any fibers. Selecting the right clinic: There were basically 3 criteria which had to be good: 1. Quality 2. Cost 3. Trust/confidence/good feeling I went to several doctors in and around San Francisco, e.g. Joel Beck and Sara Wasserbauer. From both I got a feeling they could get me the desired result, though Beck was not a specialist but a more common plastic surgeon, he would bring in Neograft, and Wasserbauer's results did not look that appealing. And both were tremendously expensive in my opinion compared to Western-European docs. So how did I randomly end in in Amsterdam, The Netherlands then? I work at a tech company here in San Francisco (did that shock you?) and have to travel to the UK and The Netherlands often for many years now. So I slowly, but surely also considered that as an option. I reached out to several clinics and selected the one where I could get good value for money and got the sense that the patients interest was on the top of the list. TransHair was one I reached out to but they were very unfriendly from the get go. Two other good clinics I heard about while in The Netherlands were: ProHairClinic in Antwerp Eberson Hair Clinic in Amsterdam ProHair did not have any bandwidth for the dates I was considering, so I connected with Eberson. The journey begins - Dr. Eberson From the start this seemed like the right guy. Calm, experienced, realistic and professional. It took two (long) calls were we discussed preferences, managed expectations, cost and assessed the situation. We decided to go for 2500 grafts, using the iFUE technique. the "i" stands for intermittent where the grafts are extracted and implanted again in a shorter time than some regular FUE. Instead of 1 extraction session and 1 implantation, it's done in several smaller batches to reduce time the hairs are outside of the body significantly, increasing chance of regrowth and survival. The paperwork was done fast digitally and we decided to do the operation on July 21st and 22nd in Amsterdam. The surgery Already in Amsterdam for two weeks in a business trip, I arrived well rested at the clinic, right next to Vondelpark, Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh museum, not a bad place:cool:. We would do 1300 grafts on day 1, 1200 on day 2. I was welcomed by Dr. Eberson and his assistant and after some breakfast and chit chat we quickly started. Head was shaved, and the anaestetic injections done in the scalp. A very nice feeling to be honest, I enjoy that at the dentist too. Perhaps that indicates a different problem:D As I started feeling totally numb in my scalp, i lied down and Dr Eberson started extraction the grafts, kind of like a plucking feel but not uncomfortable at all. I even fell asleep during the session. Waking up, we did the incisions. A meticulous task (as is the entire surgery anyway, a true art) but i was simply enjoying the music and the good felling I got from the fact that this was a work in progress. Got some lunch in the clinic before Eberson put the grafts in the right spot and right position. Time flew by and before we knew it, it was 530. Time to call it a day. Day 2 went in a similar fashion. Honestly I though the surgery was 10/10. I felt completely at ease and relaxed, enjoyed my time with the doc and assistant and was never in one moment of pain, except for 2 times 1 second for 2 injections. Between day 1 and day 2, I spent the night in a nice hotel just around the corner. Of course I'd rather sleep in my natural position but for that night and the 2 nights to come, I had to sleep with my back/head a bit up so that the newly implanted grafts would remain untouched as much as possible. I had no discomfort or pain during the surgeries, and found the experience to be way more relaxing than I thought it would. It honestly made me consider doing a second FUE down the road somewhere already.
  2. SKIP TO “*******************” FOR RESULTS LONG BACKGROUND STORY WARNING My journey began when I saw the reddit post: https://i.redd.it/0k9i3r8myk001.jpg . In the comments, I found the link to a poster (who I won’t link, but you could find it yourself) who mentioned that results like Elon had are not only possible, he had one. I went down the rabbit hole. I saw the results that are possible, and common. Quick background: My hairline was receding since I first noticed it at ~15. It wasn’t bad, but I never felt comfortable with my hair short. I noticed acceleration into my early 20s, but I knew it was too early to do anything about it. All of the common advice was to let it develop, and worry about it then. I researched HT when I was 22/23, and google showed me horror stories of 19-year-olds mutilating their scalp with an aggressive hairline and constantly adding more after the fact. I resigned to waiting and seeing. After a few years, the recession stabilized when I was 25/26. I had not known about this site, and so I tried to use Nioxin and minoxidil from Costco, hoping to permanently slow and possibly reverse the hairloss. It didn’t do a great deal. Minoxidil did function like a hair product that kept a shape. I was content to brush my hair to the side, and as long as my SO said I looked fine, I didn’t think much of it. I was never in denial about my hair loss, but like I said, it didn’t seem that bad. My view completely changed when I was at a tailor for a suit. Looking at an angle in that 3-pane mirror, I saw myself from the side. My hair looked like it was drawn on top of my head, rather than coming from my head. I felt vulnerable and embarrassed. I decided to seriously look into a HT. After researching FUE vs FUT, I saw the clear benefits of FUE (very similar to LASIK vs PRK in my opinion) I researched the most recommended doctors, and contacted him. Long story short is: He wanted to do a mix of FUT & FUE. I told him I only wanted FUE. He insisted but conceded. He gave me the quote for 2500 grafts. I view HT as a permanent body modification. Anyone that has ever gotten a tattoo knows that it isn’t the price you pay for a tattoo, it is the artist you get the tattoo from. No one brags about how much they spent, it’s about who the artist was. After brooding on the uneasy feeling of “convincing” an artist of my perspective HT to do an art piece he didn’t want to do, I researched more FUE-only doctors. This is the search that led me to Dr. Bhatti. Long story short again: He told me I needed ~2500 grafts as well. I was contacting both doctors in May 2018. I know that great artists are in high demand, and before I asked if he was available (NOT how much it cost). I told my SO that I was willing to pay double (my local price) for an artist whose portfolio I could see, and whose name I could trust (thanks to this site) if he had availability in Dec/Jan 2019. I was planning on using this time away from college to take a “vacation” where I could get the surgery and recover. Dr. Bhatti said he was available during early Jan, and I immediately booked an appointment with a deposit. Dr. Bhatti’s quote was less than the first quote I received. This was a bonus, not the reason I went to Darling Buds. Obviously I chose to go abroad for the procedure due to costs. I don’t want to compile “unnecessary” costs. I want to be clear that it was a choice of artist. I watched airline prices, and eventually booked my tickets. Booked Lax to Del in September for $456.31 and Del to IXC for $78.01, $534.32 USD round trip total. I am pretty good at finding deals, and am happy to write a post about it if enough ask, if it hasn’t been posted elsewhere. I’ll skip the common details most posters make about travel etc. When I arrived to Dr. Bhatti’s office, I felt that I was at a safe and clean environment. I thought it was all very professional and systematic in following the procedure of bloodwork, paperwork, etc. I really appreciated the one on one time with Dr. Bhatti in drawing my hairline and him giving me time to reflect (no pun intended) on the new hairline. I thought his hairline was ABSOLUTELY natural, and matched completely what I thought would restore my ~12 year old self’s hairline. I told Dr. Bhatti that I was considering lowering it further, (because why not?!). After years of hearing forehead and balding jokes, I think we all get a little defensive and never want to be in that same position, if we can avoid it. HT seems to be the best place to ensure it doesn’t happen again. So I told him what I though, and he said it may not look natural, but he would do it if I wanted it. He told me to consider it, and he would redraw the hairline the next day, the day of the procedure, and we would decide then. I showed my mom what I was considering and she said that I should go with the marker, Dr. Bhatti’s proposal. I arrived the next day and in full conviction, happily chose Dr. Bhatti’s recommendation. ************************************** Single: 271 Double: 1268 Triple: 1013 Front transplanted: 2193 Left temple: 186 Right temple: 173 (I am happy to have it broken down to me in that manner. Temples exposed expedited my HT journey, so it is nice to see how many went to that mission.) I always followed the post care instructions Dr. Bhatti’s office provides. The procedure didn’t hurt. When I felt uncomfortable, I told Dr. Bhatti. He then gave me more local antiesthetic. Side note, I only took a few of the pain pills for post op. My scalp was numb, and I didn’t need it. I had no issues in the 3 days post op. I flew on the 4th day. My face swelled during the air travel, not too horrifying, but pretty bad. I was worried about being questioned by US customs when I arrived in LAX. No problem. I was worried about a rental car I rented later in the day, again, no issues. I didn’t take photos. The swelling went away gradually, but was gone after 3 days, no problem (I expected this thanks to this site! I always checked on here to see if others had similar issues). Picture curation is mostly chronological (I hope). Orange Line is "generally" what I was thinking. Just a rough idea of an "aggressive approach" I ultimately did not pursue. Last photo is 72 hours post. Didn't take a post donor pic due to not trying to make myself contort as well as not making my SO look at the carnage!
  3. Hi, I am a 31 year old male. Diffuse thinning on top, NW4. Still have a reasonable amount of hair. I have been thinking about a one- off 2500 graft HT FUE. I cant take propecia/finasteride due to side effects. I can only afford one transplant as in the next few years I have a lot planned house, family etc and will not have the money for future. So my thought is a 2500 HT which will be plenty for me at the moment, if I keep most of my hair greta...it works, if I lose all the native hair because of the Fue I can buzz shave my head still and still have an amount of hair. Either way I will surely get 4,5 maybe 10 years of it looking good? Thoughts on my plan??
  4. I started suffering from hair loss about 10 years back, and currently am 29 years old and based out of India. Stressful as it, i tried a lot of medicines before finally giving up on them. The only option left was a Hair Transplant but as you know, it is not an easy decision to make. I tried to take the plunge many a times but it took me a lot of reading and research on the doctors and the procedure as a whole. Still could not come to a decision early. This site was particularly something where i spent a lot of my research time. After three years, i finally had to make a decision and go in for the procedure. I decided to goin for FUE as i did not want any FUT scars. I contacted a lot of clinics and considered the following : 1) Dr Madhu 2) ADHI clinics ( Claim to have done a lot of procedures, but dodge showing results everytime. Seems more like a business than a clinic. The personlized consultations are too something rehearsed and very generic. The surgeons do not seem to have the experience claimed by the clinic ) 3) Dr. Kishore Babu Pentyala ( met him and explained the procedures and answered my questions ) 4) Others I finally decided to have the procedure done at Dr. Kishore Babu Pentyala at New You Cosmetic Clinic. He has a lot of videos in youtube too. The procedure was done on 15th of September and he decided to do the front and Mid scalp. He said that he was able to extract 2500 grafts and the procedure lasted from 10AM to 5PM in the evening . ( 10 AM to 1 AM for extraction using SAFE system with 25 minute break and impantaion from 2:30 to 5 almost without any break). The doctor made me feel very confortable during the entire procedure. I would be posting continuously with the results and ongoing progress and need your guidance and expertise for assessment. Need your continuous inputs Pre Op Pictures: Pre Op Photographs 15th Day Post Op Picture 15 days Post Op Photographs
  5. Hello everyone! Dr. Cooley completed my 1st HT 3 days ago, and I have finally gotten around to updating my site and uploading pictures. Check out my Hair Transplant Website for lots more photos and info. I traveled to Charlotte July, 26th to meet with Dr. Cooley and discuss final plans and make sure my expectations were in line with reality. Dr. Cooley is a great guy and very easy to talk to. This man is the real deal. He stood by the recommendation that 2000 grafts would look great. I had budgeted to go as high as 3000 grafts and he agreed to be flexible and take out more than 2000 if possible and work a little farther back into my existing hair. After the final consultation, I headed over to the hotel. The hotel that Dr. Cooley's office uses for out of town patients is stellar. The patient consultant, Lollie, told me that they always have about 2 patients staying there on most days and that they always treat his patients well. Totally true. When checking in, the staff noted that everything was paid in advance and very warmly set up the early morning shuttle for the next day. They said if I needed anything, let them know- Dr. Cooley's patients are their VIPs. That felt great. It was still the afternoon so I took a quick trip to the mall to grab a button up shirt for procedure day and then took in a movie to kill time. About 9:00 went to sleep with the alarm set for 5:30 to get up and get ready for procedure. I woke up early and scrubbed down in the shower with Hibiclens and got into my stylish sweatpants and headed down for a big breakfast. The hotel picked me up at 6:45 sharp and we made the long 3 minute trek to Dr. Cooley's office. One of the techs, Stephanie, greeted me at the door and double checked the consent forms and, most importantly, helped me make out my movie list and lunch order. Dr. Cooley then came in and went over our plan one more time, gave me some valium, demerol and other fun stuff and then took the "before" photos. We got into the surgery room and gave me the Versed intravenously and prepped for excision. Dr. Cooley uses a very cool vibrating/massaging thing that distracts you from the needle that gives the local anesthetic. I have heard plenty of people talk here about that being the worst part and I can honestly say, I hardly felt any of the injections all day. I was conscious through the excision but very relaxed and wasn't bothered at all. It went by very quickly and the next thing I knew, Dr. Cooley was making the recipient incisions. Next he and the lead tech, Brandi, were placing grafts while 8 other techs prepared the FUs. Dr. Cooley was in the room placing with Brandi nearly the whole day. When he had to step out for a while, another experienced tech, Amy pitched in. From start to finish, I was there 11.5 hours. It seemed to fly by and everyone was so great I actually enjoyed my time there. Dr. Cooley ended up extracting 2508 FUs and covered an are of approximately 50 cm2 for a density averaging 50fu/cm2. I think I had slightly higher than average hairs per FU. The breakdown is: 1s - 413 2s - 1030 3s - 837 4/5s - 228 for a total of 2508 grafts and 5896 hairs. Dr. Cooley said the donor was closed with "no tension at all" which made me very happy. He used Acell in the wound. The next day a friend in the medical profession looked at it and said "That looks like a wound that has been healing for 2 weeks not 24 hours" so needless to say, I am thrilled and hope it continues to heal well. As it is now, I have a hard time finding it just to put the antibiotic on. I couldn't believe how clean everything looked when he was finished. No bleeding, everything just looked neat and tidy. I couldn't have been happier. After being so worried in the weeks building up to this day, I couldn't have wished for a smoother procedure.
