Advice for Hair Loss Sufferers Considering Hair Transplant Surgery

My Story

  1. I'm months after my HT and it seems like I can still feel small pieces of stitches in my donor area. I'm assuming that's what it is. I suppose maybe it could be scabs or something else hard, but I'm pretty sure it's remains of the stitches I had. Has anybody else experienced this?
  2. Just back from BHR clinic Megasession with Dr Bisanga in Brussels. Strip procedure as follows: Total grafts: 4889 1 Hair: 926 2 Hair: 2038 3 Hair: 1403 4 Hair: 522 Time in chair: About 10 hours. Overall experience: Very positive. I researched for some time before choosing, and at this time feel I made the right choice. My photo album is here, containing pre and post procedure photos I had a lot of grafts. I explained to Dr Bisanga that I didn't want to get a lot of procedures, but would prefer to get as much done in one sitting as possible as I basically just want to get back on with my life. Having the procedure causes too much disruption for me. Initially he said 3500-4000 grafts would be all that was possible, but on the day I was shown to have very good laxity and more was possible. I'll post pictures of the donor area in a few days once I've got someone to take the photos. Considering the length of the procedure I don't feel too bad, but I'm pretty tired. The post-op photos where taken about 18 hours after the procedure.
  3. Greetings all I am new to the forums & been reading for awhile now...anyway I am a veteran HT patient going back to the 80's with plugs from Bosley then double flap surgery at Fleming/Mayer so consequently I have extensive scarring and slightly better than horrific results. Last week I underwent a 1200 graft strip surgery (last one) to rebuild temple points and try to soften the bold hairline however the surgeon really wants no part in scar/lump or FUE repair where the flaps were rotated into place...the lumps actually make the divits from the scars look much deeper and the hair always parts there along with growing in a backward direction as opposed to forward. And since most of my donor hair has been depleted BHT will have to be an option. Hasson/Wong turned me away, Umar said 5500 grafts to start with...no one is addressing the scars other than trying to cover them up. Any recommendations and opinions from a few more experts would be appreciated as my goals at this point are fairly modest. Feel free to comment on the pics below Comment from one doc already "you were raped" very true:)
  4. Hi everyone, First off just wanted to say a big thank you to all who contribute to this site. I, like most people from the U.K. would never have considered going abroad to get this procedure done if I hadn't had access to all this information to show the different standards that are out there. After months, well more like weeks of deliberating between two or three top doctors I decided to go to New York to have my procedure done with Dr Feller. He was the stand out choice in the end for me mainly due to the sheer number of patients posting positive results on forums like this. Also Spex, who is Dr Feller's U.K. consultant for those of you who don't already know is by far one of the most helpful guys I've ever dealt with. Seriously if I had any questions he would get back to me straight away, sometimes within minutes. He's a good guy to have in your corner leading up to surgery. I flew in to New York on the Friday so I could stay a few nights in Manhattan as I've never been and have always wanted to go. I've got to say it lived up to it's reputation it is an absolutely awesome city. Just a shame I wasn't able to enjoy a few social beers whilst over there as the night life looked incredible and I'm pretty sure the accent would have worked in my favour and all. Actually saying that I probably saved a shed load of money as it is pretty pricey. Anyway I booked myself into the Inn at Great Neck on the Sunday night which is one of the hotels you're recommended to stay in the night before as it is in walking distance to the Surgery. For anyone who is considering staying there the rooms were pretty nice and fairly big and the staff were friendly enough. I met Dr Feller the next morning and we discussed my goals and he drew on the agreed hairline. Next were the injections which were honestly fine, there is a slight nip but nothing major. The donor area was then cut and stapled back together. Again nothing to worry about here you can't feel a thing and you have the doc and his brilliant team of techs reassuring you through out the whole procedure. Then came the placing of the grafts. Singles were placed in the front part of my hairline which had been designed jagged so as to look natural once grown in. Then a combination of twos and threes were placed in the mid scalp to add density. I have to say all the reviews you read about Dr Feller being a real 'straight shooter' and easy to talk to are absolutely true but to be honest the thing that reassured me the most was his confidence. You can just tell he's performed this procedure a million times before and when he tells you there is nothing to worry about you believe him. I honestly wasn't nervous once through out the whole procedure. In fact I couldn't believe how easy the whole thing was. The hardest thing by far is sitting still in a chair for 6 hours although you do get regular breaks and at lunch you get an absolutely awesome sandwich from a fantastic deli. In fact that was definitely the highlight of my day, haha. I'm actually 9 days post op now and everything seems to be going to plan so far. I'll upload the pre and post surgery pics below for all to admire Dr Feller's handy work. If you've got any questions I'll be happy to answer them.
  5. Hi guys, haven't posted in a while but am always reading. I'm 31 and have been on Propecia since I was 24. I halted the loss in my crown (even got some back) but am now thinning at the temples. I still have ok coverage, but the thinning in the crown and temples is getting harder to hide (especially when I sweat or my hair is wet). Side note: I used to take Propecia every other day, and it wasn't until this year that I started taking it daily...which sped up the thinning process. I was thinking of getting an FUE - 1500 - 2000 grafts - to fill in a little crown and my temples. I won't waste any hairs rebuilding the hairline, just want to get some density with what I have. I wish I could do a strip, but the nature of my job forces me to interact with clientele on a weekly basis...I can't afford to go through the "Ugly Duckling" phase as so many call it on this site. Also, I like shorter hair styles. However, I know in the future I'd probably need another procedure. So I wanted to know (and cant seem to get a clear answer) would an FUE procedure now prevent me from getting a substantial strip or another substantial FUE down the road? I appreciate any insight guys. It's been weighing on my mind a lot...
  6. This gentleman came to Dr. Arocha in his late twenties. Dr. Arocha performed a 3500+ FUT procedure in his hairline and frontal region. The after photos are taken 16 months following his procedure. The patient is on a medical regimen consisting of Propecia. You can view the complete album, including photos taken immediately post-op Here.
  7. Hello everyone, I have felt compelled to share my own Hair transplant story: I hadn't posted before as I was really waiting to see some positive results, and I immersed myself in a big project to keep a low profile at work under a cap low and behold I just stopped and looked to see where I had come and I was very happy...... After going through the emotional roller coaster of the decision. I had been losing my hair since around 24 years old albeit very gradually, I seem to be a good responder to minoxidil and it has definitely saved my hair for the past 10 years, however around August 2008 I noticed a significant shed that never came back! and a distinct loss from my hairline mainly from the temples and now also form the front I then frantically decided on the very serious idea of a hair transplant. I never ever really thought I would ever get one as I heard far too many horror stories, and the topic just seems clouded with mystery, thoughts that went constantly round my head were: does it really work, only 50% of transplants are success full, What about complications, could I make it worse?? So many crazy thoughts and I guess anyone going through the same decision knows what I'm talking about. So for the best part of 18 months from around August 2009 I went on a mission to find the truth about real hair transplants and of course a clinic and surgeon that I would let cut my head open only to make it better not worse. BIG decision! I went on the various forums and started getting a feel for who I thought would be the best clinics for the Job. In this time I was on minoxidil 5% and was responding very well. I also decided to start finasteride, and thankfully this made a difference as well, I noticed within about 2-3 months that no more miniature hairs were falling out and also I was not leaving any hair on the the pillow. So I had good stabilisation of my current hair situation and also I weighed in the fact that I was not in my 30's and it seemed an ok time to think about a HT, I thought getting a HT in my 20's was a little to early. So feel I factored a lot of the elements together and felt that a HT at age 32 was appropriate. For me money was not the issue if I'm going to get it done it has to be done right and I wasn't going to make my decision over a couple of grand if it meant compromising the result. I knew I had to go abroad as the UK seemed devoid of consistent and open results I wanted to be 100% sure and make my own informed choice, so I managed also to see 3 UK patients through Spex and that helped massively in making the choice. Well to let you know I basically short listed about 3 clinics and eventually went for Feller medical in August 2010 Its now almost exactly 6 months since my hair transplant and I was stunned at how far I had come in just those short months, so much so that I think it is important for me to share just how much better I feel and how my hair is constantly changing for the better. I ended up having a strip surgery done by Doctor Feller for 2250 grafts. It was a great experience I did brick it several times before hand about the decision to go ahead mainly about having a scar at the back of my head but I stayed strong and went for it. Here are some before pics, immediate post op.and at 6 months As you can see Flickr: Ukresponder's Photostream I had major loss in both temples and some from the front hairline. I was losing it from the crown, but to be honest a very small amount of nanogen fibres plus thickening shampoo and dermatch sorted it out well and also the finasteride was slowly but surely closing the gap, I thought I got give it a good 3+ years so not worried about that just yet As we all know its the hairline that frames your face and that make you look older than you are. My main goal was to sort out those temples and not have to rely on an 'engineered comb over' as I liked to call it If you look at the 6 months post pics you cn see some really good growth, every month I can style and that section of hair so much more note the pic is with NO concealer, NO hair thickening shampoo just natural look at how the sides have filled up, I mean I used to waste half the nanogen and dermatch on those temple receeds and now for the first time in over 5 years I don't even think about it! I hear at 6 months its only around 40-50% growth, I'm already happy, the left side still lagging but still better than before. I can actually feel the 'weight' of he hair and style it even at this early stage. I have to say the experience was fantastic. Dr Feller is so easy going relaxed and made the whole transplant pain free and as enjoyable as it can be. Sorry for the long post but hopefully any one thinking of getting a transplant and is still not sure then I hope this gives you motivation and confidence that you can get great results from the right advice research and doctor and I just want to help out as I got so much form the forums before I went ahead with my own HT UKResponder
  8. Hi All, I am looking to get a procedure done during Christmas this year and after having done a fair bit of research, I narrowed my list down to Hasson & Wong and Shapiro Medical Group (SMG). I have been in touch with both clinics, but am having trouble deciding which one to go with, so I am hoping I can get some help here! The way I see it, it's not exactly an apple-to-apple comparison - which is making the decision a little tricky: 1. Doctor: SMG: Given my preferred schedule, I can only book with Dr Paul Shapiro and NOT Dr Ron Shapiro himself. (Is this something I should be concerned about?). vs H&W: I haven't specifically spoken to Mike about who would perform the procedure on me (I will confirm that later today). Between Dr Hasson and Dr Wong though, is there a general preference/recommendation? 2. Strip vs FUE / # Grafts: SMG: Given my relatively young age (27), Matt (Zupon) recommended that I get on to Propecia and let the meds work on my top and crown area, while we focus the procedure on to the hair line. As such, an FUE would be the way to go - given the relatively low number of donor grafts required for this first procedure (Matt recommended 1600-2000). H&W: Mike was not so 'pro-FUE' (partly coz H&W does not offer FUE procedures?) and said Strip would be the way to go. He estimated 3500-4000 grafts on the hairline and top core (leaving the crown for Propecia to take care of). So my options are: A. 1600-2000 graft FUE with Dr PAUL Shapiro OR B. 3500-4000 graft Strip with either Dr Hasson or Dr Wong My question then is - which option should I go with? I need to confirm my booking at either clinic in the next day or two - so I'm a little pressed for a decision - but I'm having trouble deciding between the two! Also - SMG may not have a slot open at my preferred schedule at all (even with Dr Paul Shapiro), while H&W has confirmed a slot for me. Not that I think that should be a big part of the decision, but it is a consideration nonetheless.... Another small factor - given the difference in the number of grafts recommended - the procedure would be about 25% cheaper at SMG than at H&W (Again, not a big consideration in my mind). Any help / advice will be much much appreciated. Thanks a lot all!!
  9. Hi Guys, Here is my story. im 29,loosing hair since 21/22. i joined this forum back in 2008 to educate myself about the transplant and to do something about my haisloss. i could not do anything at the time because of financial and other reasons so i had decided to postpone it for a couple of years. i am now ready to do smthing about it. i have done few online consultations with the coliation docs here.based on the pictures i sent everyone recommends 3000-4000 grafts(strip) to restore the hairline to mid scalp. i have done an inperson consultation with a coliation doc in europe, who was very reluctant to treat me with strip instead he suggested 1500-2000 grafts via fue and to keep it short( my donor density according to him is around 60-70 /cm2). i have been on fin for 13 months and minox for over 2years now. im finding it very hard to decide whether to do fue and keep it buzzed or go for a large strip. please have a look at my pictures and help me make a decision..any feedback, suggestions will be appriciated..thank you all
  10. I have a few questions concerning stretching of the scar (from strip surgery) 1. When (at what period following surgery: days, weeks, months) does maximum stretching (widening or accumulation mass) of the scar tissue occur ? 2. How effective does keeping the security devices (stitches or staples) in, for longer periods of time, following the surgery, is, in reducing the width of the scar? 3. Is there published or consensual information circulating among us, with respect to point #2 above, concerning such added value of delayed removal of stitches or staples? 4. If so, what may be the conclusions? Is there a correlation (graphically or tabularly represented) between the width of the scar and the length of time the staples or the stitches were kept in, after surgery? Thank you all for your contributions (particularly Dr. Lindsey if he reads this thread)
  11. I'm planning on getting a HT before the end of this year. I've been researching the FUT and FUE methods and can't decide which one to go with. I'm leaning toward the FUE method because I won't be left with a long scar, however, I've read that the FUT method produces healthier grafts. I've listed a few advantages and disadvantages of each method as I understand them. I'm interested to read feedback from people who have tried these methods. Follicular Unit Grafting (FUT) or "Strip technique" Advantages: * Fut grafts are often more healthy than FUE grafts * Much less expensive than FUE method Disadvantages: *long thin scar on the donor area (scalpel is used unlike with the FUE method) * Longer period for donor area to heal *Much more expensive than FUT Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) Advantages *No long linear scar (No scalpel used) *No limitations on activity after the procedure (Less time to heal) Disadvantages: * Almost double the cost of FUT method *FUE grafts are less healthy Of course there are many more advantages and disadvantages for each method, but these are the ones that stand out.
  12. I am considering having a HT done in the upcoming month and am trying to figure out if I should go with the strip method or FUE. I had a HT (1800 grafts) done abot 4 years ago and need a repair HT to correct the scar and also to add more to my hairline. What are the pros and cons of each method? Who are some good docs for the strip method? Who are some good docs for the FUE method?
