Advice for Hair Loss Sufferers Considering Hair Transplant Surgery

  1. Hello dear HNR community, today is the day and I had my first hair transplant with Dr. Gür (Fuecapilar) in Istanbul. As a package, I chose the VIP package, where Dr.Gür also performs the extraction. The whole team was super friendly and very warm. Especially Dr.Gür is a very funny and caring person, who listens to your questions and wishes. Day 1, Arrival: The flight with Turkish Airlines was on time and very pleasant. The food was well-portioned and delicious. Upon arriving in Istanbul, we looked for the meeting point where we were supposed to be picked up. We had to wait for about 15 minutes at the meeting point and were then driven to the Tryp Wyndham Istanbul Atasehir Hotel. Overall, everything was straightforward, and it was my first flight as an adult. The journey took approximately one hour from the European side of Istanbul to Atasehir (Asia) where our hotel was located. Admittedly, traffic in Istanbul is quite unique^^ There isn’t much exciting to report about the Asian side of Istanbul since we were in the business district and had booked an extra day for relaxation and preparation for the hair transplant. The hotel was spacious and bright. The only downside was that the walls were a bit thin, and we had a somewhat noisy neighbor who was on the phone until 3 in the morning. I had earplugs and recommend everyone to bring some. Day 2, Free Day: Breakfast offered a wide selection, and the taste was good. On the free day, my wife and I mainly shopped and ate in the shopping district (a 10-minute walk from the hotel). The rest of the day, I focused on relaxation and inflating my wedge pillow. Sleep was crucial for me, and the wedge pillow, along with a comfortable neck pillow, made sleeping post-operation much easier. Day 3, Hair Transplantation: First, I had a hearty breakfast to prepare for the hair transplantation. Then, at 8:55 AM, my translator Ahmet picked me up and took me to the clinic (a 3-minute walk away). Upon arriving at the practice, I filled out the paperwork for the operation and was greeted by Dr. Gür with the words, “Aah my victim 😊.” My wife and I couldn’t help but laugh! Haha! 🤣 In general, Dr. Gür appears very friendly and humorous. Here, I have listed a rough timeline for the day of the operation. Hair transplant schedule (approximately) 9:10 – 9:40: Paperwork and waiting 9:40 – 10:30: Hair examination, consultation, and hairline design 10:15 – 10:30: Photoshoot 10:30 – 11:15: Shaving, hair coloring, hair wash, pre-op medication (Xanax) 11:15 – 13:45: Anesthesia for donor area and extraction 13:45 – 14:30: Lunch 14:30 – 16:50: Anesthesia for recipient area and hair implantation 16:50 – 17:00: Discussion about post-op care, etc. Afterward, Ahmet brought me back to the hotel, and I spent the rest of the day there. Surprisingly, I slept much better than expected (7 ½ hours). Day 4, Departure: I had the opportunity to sleep in, have breakfast, and check out since the clinic’s hair wash was scheduled for 1:00 PM. After checking out at 12:00 PM, the hotel staff looked after our luggage. At 12:55, we were picked up by my other translator named Kerem, who had also organized the entire hair transplant process with me via WhatsApp beforehand. At 1:00 PM, my hair was washed, and I had a brief chat with Dr. Gür and took a photo together. We spent the remaining time at the hotel until we were driven from the hotel to the airport. The transfer went smoothly, and the return flight was pleasant. Graftcount from consultation: Hairline: about ~400 grafts Temples: about ~700 grafts each (1400 grafts) Detailed graftcount will come in near future. About me: Age: 29 NW: 2/3 Medication: Finasteride 1.25mg daily orally for ~3 years Hair loss start: At the age of 16 Family history: Father NW3 no vortex Hair colour: very dark blonde Hair diameter: 70-75 microns Timelapse of my hairloss: Pictures at home of me before the hair transplant: Pictures of me after the hair transplant, 1793 grafts later: 1 day after hair transplant (clinic hair wash): Front: Back: The proper pictures from the clinic will come later, but will be added in near future. Feel free to share your opinion 👍
  2. Well I finally pulled the trigger 😊 After spending literally years doing research (and losing more hair along the way), trying every medication under the sun (with mixed results and some siginificant side effects) I decided it was time to move forward with a hair transplant from Dr. Konior. During my initial virtual consultation with Dr. Konior he explained that I a very healthy donor area, and the pros and cons of FUT vs. FUE. I ultimately decided to go with FUT as 1) his FUT scars I’ve seen are generally pencil thin, 2) this could help preserve grafts if I need another surgery down the road. And 3) FUT scars can be well disguised with SMP or a future FUE surgery if necessary (there are some great examples on this forum where they are basically invisible) I originally flew in to Chicago from the PNW for this procedure on Tuesday, checked into my hotel (chose the Embassy Suites Lombard -due to being a 5 min drive from the office and offering free breakfast), and dropped by the local walgreens to fill my prescriptions - One piece of advice, double check that they actually gave you all 4 prescriptions (Valium (relaxation/sleep), Hydrocodone (pain), Cephalxin (antibiotic), and Scopoline Patch (nausea). They forgot one of mine and I had to catch an uber back to get it at 10pm the night before the surgery. Honesty I was so nervous I didn’t sleep more than an hour the night before the surgery, but my alarm went off at 5:30am, I grabbed a quick light breakfast and was over to their office by 6:30am. After being greeted by Karen (whom I bonded with over our shared love of Golf and Pickleball), and meeting Lisa (hope I got her name right) who’s been working with Dr. Konior for 20 years, Dr. Konior came in and we spent the first 15 minutes getting to know each other, discussing our views on great restaurants and some new books he recommended. We then dove into hairline design. His original line was a little low/ aggressive for my tastes, so we ultimately revised it to be a bit more conservative. He also did a nice job matching up my temple points as my right side was lower than my left. I was debating a “U” shape hairline vs. a “soft V” and ended up going with Dr. K’s recommendation which was more of the “U: I’ve seen other Hair Transplant doctors use all sorts of crazy equipment to find symmetry, but aside from a ruler and a marker, Dr. Konior did everything freehand and by the second revision I was incredibly happy with the design he recommended – felt like a dramatic improvement while being age appropriate. It was really at this moment that I started to understand why people call him an “artist”, he really has an uncanny ability for partial symmetry (you actually don’t want full symmetry or faces look extremely odd, and micro irregularities in the hairline) After that it was Valium time and after waiting about 30 minutes for that to kick in, into the operating room we went. As everyone states, the painkiller injections were the most painful part. He mentioned everyone’s body is different and mine seemed to go through anesthesia quickly (this is something my dentist has mentioned too) so they needed to regularly re-inject more painkillers throughout the procedure. One piece of advice - don’t try to grit through the pain, at one point late in the day I started to feel some pain in the donor area and figured I just try to let them finish but it pretty soon became unbearable and as soon as I mentioned it they kindly/gently scolded me for not telling them sooner and quickly injected more anesthesia. It was quite a marathon with a few breaks to stretch legs and for lunch, and by the time we finally wrapped up it was 10PM, meaning I’d been there for over 15 hours straight! I know long days can by typical with a lot of grafts, but it sounds like what partially took so long for me was that Dr. Konior called me an "oozer" (literally the term he used haha). Apparently they inject adrenaline into the scalp to try and minimize bleeding, and for whatever reason this wasn’t as effective for me, and my scalp bled more than normal. I do remember hearing some deep sighs from Dr. Konior and his team during a few moments throughout the surgery where it just felt like they were holding gause to the side of my head and waiting for the bleeding to stop so they could keep going. I’ll probably sound like a broken record with all the other patients who’ve chosen Dr. Konior, but he truly is a one of a kind doctor and person. There literally wasn’t enough space on the walls of his office to fit all the awards he’s won, and his bedside demeanor, confidence, humor and consultative approach all set me completely at ease. Hes’ also a genuinely good guy I could see myself being friends with. I should also mention all his incredible staff, including Karen, Lisa, and one tech who I believe was from Poland (I feel bad forgetting her name) and what felt like 6-7 other incredibly friendly and professional staff working alongside him the entire time. Once we finally wrapped up it was time to head home, and as I was about to call an Uber, Dr. Konior kindly offered to drive me to the hotel. At the hotel I crashed on my makeshift upright bed (I got a great wedge pillow and neck pillow on Amazon that was recommended here, and perhaps partly due to exhaustion, partly due to valium I slept like a rock. One final recommendation - the next day I was due back for a cleaning and wasn’t feeling particularly hungry so I took a Hydrocodone pill and headed off to the office. BIG mistake - I got so nauseous I actually ended up throwing up at the office. ALWAYS take your meds with at least a little food, and make sure to use the anti-nausea patch if they offer one. Anyway this was quite the novel so I’ll wrap up, and see below for a few before and after photos. I know the shedding/ugly duckling stage is next, but I’ll be continuing to update this thread over the coming year regardless. Finally a huge thank you to all of you on this forum who don't even know it, but inspired me to take the plunge. Happy to answer any questions, and any thoughts/feedback or advice would be welcome. Fortune favors the bold!
  3. Hello hello dear HRN family, My surgery is scheduled for beginning of March with Dr. Christina Vryonidou of HDC clinic and I wanted to post my experience here. I will be sharing my story, the clinic selection process, and more info as things happen. Background I'm 35 now and as you can see in the photos, I've been facing hair loss for a few years now. It started in my mid-20s, but I could see the difference more intensely in my 30s. When it comes to treatment, I started using Regaine 7 years back for a few months. I did see results, but experienced mild symptoms of Minoxidil and stopped. Didn't use anything for many years and fast forward a couple of years back, I started using a product from Ordinary, the hairloss serum, which was recommended by a friend. Naturally, I wasn't expecting anything fancy, but the hairloss was reduced a bit. Even though I was joking around with friends that it's fine, I'll lose all my hair and then the plan is to go to Turkey - problem solved. At some point last year, it started bothering me that haircut options became very limited and felt like it was adding years to my age, but tried not to let it affect my confidence too much. In the back scenes, I started doing some research online of what was the HT process, different options, results and of course I ran into this forum, for which I'm really grateful! I learned a lot from hearing about people's journeys, reviews of clinics and surgeons, so I finally made up my mind. I'm having a Hair transplant! Clinic Selection I like organisation. It's annoying really. Just ask my wife. This meant that there were excel files, and lists, and scores, and different factors to consider, bla bla bla, to find the right clinic which met my criteria. Things I considered were the following: Clinic results, Surgeon reviews, Consultation, post-op support, budget (I know.. Everyone has a budget, however I said from the start that if I don't like the clinic, I won't compromise), and a few other factors. This forum helped me direct my focus on some renowned clinics and surgeons, like Pekiner, Bessam Farjo, Keser, Juan Couto, Fuegenix, HLC, Hermest, Serkan Aygin Clinic, Demirsoy, etc, but also to avoid hair mills. My top 4 were all in approved list of surgeons here. They were the following in ascending preference: Bicer. Heard great things about her. There were a few bad results over the recent years, but then again most clinics do have some. The main reason I didn't go with Bicer, is that I spoke with her assistant and, even though she was very helpful, she didn't give me confidence in some questions. I also spoke with Bicer, but it felt very rushed, which put me off. FueCapilar. I was considering Turan at the time, who had great reviews. What I found odd, is that Turan had a fixed cost. It was 4K Euro for up to 3.5K grafts and 4.5K for more than 3.5K. If you're an English speaker, I believe there is a translator. Onur, the consultant, was fine but could have been more responsive and a bit more helpful in some responses. I've also read great things about Gur, so both doctors seemed a good option. Eugenix. I've spoken with many clinics over the last few months. Eugenix had hands down the best consultation! They really care about patients - even potential customers - which was a massive plus for them. I was going for the Exclusive package which included senior doctors performing the operation. Eugenix is highly regarded from many members in this forum and I can see why. I was between this and my first option. HDC. The clinic I decided to go with was HDC in Cyprus and chose Dr. Christina to perform the operation (she's in the list of approved surgeons). The results I saw from her looked great and they felt very natural. The consultant I spoke with, George Georgiou, was very helpful, the consultation felt very personal and it seems they really care for their patients and their results. I had many questions and George answered comprehensively every question and didn't give me the impression HDC were too focused on making the highest profit. I read a few other Greek forums, which also thought highly of them. The reason I choose them was because of the good reviews I read about Christina, results I saw which looked natural, and that they made me feel I'm in good hands. If anyone has any questions on the above, feel free to DM me, happy to help. I have a long list of questions I asked consultants, which I gathered online. Initial Clinic Assessment Interesting experience this one. The grafts I got from clinics ranged from 2,600 to 3800. Quite a big range, but the average was around 3,500. Most clinics agreed that I'm a good NW 3v, with good potential for a higher NW in the coming years. Keen to hear what you think from the photos. All clinics agreed that my donor area looks very healthy and I would be a good candidate for a HT. Of course the exact number will be reviewed in-person, but they said that the maximum amount that can be transplanted is ~4K to avoid damaging the donor area. Interestingly, one clinic also rejected me. Dr Pekiner said I'm a NW 4 and on my way to NW 5-6. He was concerned about not using Finasteride or Minoxidil and suggested we should wait at least 6 months, before we reassess my case. Totally respect their call; in fact it made me think highly of their ethics that they won't just take anyone, and that they really care about having good results. HDC details They use a motorised punch, which is around 0.9 mm (depends). Not ideal, but in certain cases they also do manual if needed. Graft extraction is across donor area to minimise visible spotting. Density is around 60-70 in the hairline and about 45-50 elsewhere. Of course it depends on the patient. Some splitting of hairs happens, but only if needed. They use Lens Loupes to clean and separate hairs Recipient incisions happen with small blades The team is very experienced and have been working together for many years They do this saw-like hairline, which even though makes results seem natural, I've seen some results in which it's been quite intense. Will highlight it during the op. day. Photos I've attached photos from before my haircut and after. I noticed that my phone highlights my grey hair more in sunlight, which sometimes makes it seem i'm a bit balder, but hopefully in a few months this won't be a problem :) This brings us to today! I decided to go for a buzz cut to prepare psychologically, paid my deposit and I'm ready to go! Haven't seen many results of Dr. Christina in HRN so I 'll share more details soon to inform you guys.
  4. Hi all, love the community and was hoping to not post and rely on posts already here but thought this might be easier. Currently deciding between Feriduni , Bisanga and Freitas. (been on finasteride for over 2 years as well as regain) got a quote from the first two but Freitas rejected me stating “have very fine and blond hair ” Questions: - is this normal for Freitas ? - any other surgeons you recommend? - who of the above do you think is best for my case - I assume all three equal but thought worth asking! Thanks in advance!
  5. Hey everyone new to the forums but have been a long time lurker. Have a scheduled 3000 graft FUE procedure in November with Dr. Rahal to rebuild my hairline. 60cm squared total area being covered at 50 grafts a cm squared. I am 29 yr old NW3 with deep temporal recession and with a U hairline recession and am looking to rebuild my temple angles and lower my hairline some as I have a large forehead now. I have attached photos of my hair loss. I am taking finasteride 1mg EOD and believe I am a good candidate for a transplant as my mothers side of the family has no hair loss and my father is a NW3 in his mid 60’s. He has had the same hairline since he was my age. So his hair loss has stabilized naturally the past 30 years as he takes no medication for hair loss. I have a 200 person wedding I am the best man in next summer so that is part of my reason to get one in Nov, that will give me 9 months from procedure until the wedding. Do you believe that is enough time to see decent results. Just looking to get some opinions on my procedure and on Dr. Rahal as a surgeon. Have read a mix of good and bad on here. As a side note I will also mention I have Ménière’s disease.
  6. I am looking to undergo hair transplantation. I have the last stage of baldness, the stage of NW7. Unfortunately, the donor area in the back of my head is weak so that extraction of grafts from my chest is a must. Therefore, I may not get full coverage for my head in the first session of transplantation. I will probably get a half coverage for the frontal half of my head similar to the pattern of baldness stage of NW3. I may undergo a second session to cover my crown of the head one year later or I may not take it at all. I want the result of my hair transplantation to look like a natural pattern of NW3 stage of baldness. I don't want the appearance of my hair after the surgery to seem transplanted and to be a mockery or a reason for criticism. I suggest that the hair is transplanted in the zones of the head in the attached figure in the following order so look like a natural pattern: Zone (A) Transplanted with a density of 40-50 hairs/cm2 Zone (B): Transplanted with a density of 30-40 hairs/cm2 Zone (C): Transplanted with a density of 20-30 hairs/cm2 Zone (D): Not Transplanted I appeal you please if you have any further suggestions or recommendations for my transplantation so that my hair will look natural and have a long-term acceptable appearance.
  7. FUE performed on a 45-year-old Caucasian male with • NW III, Class T • Donor density of 80-84 FU/cm² occipital and 76-80 FU/cm² temporal • Hair diameter of ~58-62 microns Treatment plan • Follicular Unit Extraction Transplantation to attain an aesthetic reconstruction of the hairline. Performed procedure Procedure (December 21st, 2017) Follicular Unit Extraction Transplantation with 3022 FU * 622 single hair FU * 2400 double hair FU Parallel incisions in custom-sized blades technique (Cutting Edge blades of 0.7-0.85mm). Extraction performed with a 0.85mm FUE punch with CIT Manual Punch Handle. No microscopic preparation of the follicular unit grafts.
  8. Help me Obi Wanthair Kenobi, you're my only hope... Hiya. I'm 43 years old and have noticed my hair receding over the past five years more and more, but now it seems to be really thinning out over the last two. I posted lots of pictures in my profile. I am apprehensive and confused as to what I should do at this point. I'm pretty positive I don't want to take the current choices of drugs (which is basically Propecia/Finasteride at this point in time). I don't want to be stuck on them forever and also I'm not a fan of modern medicine -- seems there are always side-effects. Shaving/buzzing my hair doesn't seem like a real option though either as I just don't have the head for it (more on this later). I have been wavering on HT for the past couple of years. I went to visit Bosley about 1.5 years ago, but didn't leave with a very good impression as you probably already know. They seemed more interested in "When can you schedule" than anything else. I then put this thought on hold, hoping (like many of you probably) that maybe a solution was coming just around the corner. I started to work from home this past August, so that is a plus and I decided to do something about this hair loss while I have this ability/job as it would make recovery less stressful -- or so I thought. I see some doctors require buzzing my hair! This thought is really tweaking me as it means I will be quarantined to my home until my hair grows back out. I really don't look good in hats at all, and I think if I wore one socially, it would be a dead give-away as I have NEVER worn one before. I had gone to see Dr. Goertz a couple of weeks ago now (as he's very local), and he seemed like a good guy. He did the drawing on my head thing, and the template tracing thing -- none of which Bosley ever did. I even saw someone post a log of his work and it seemed a positive experience. Well two days ago, I called to put the $1k deposit down and the office turns out is closed on Wednesdays. A blessing in disguise it seems as I decided to punch his name into this site and was horrified to see the warnings! I literally got queezy thinking that *I* might have just been one of the horror stories I read about! I then researched a bit more and see that both Hasson & Wong and Gabel are very highly recommended. Both are equidistant from me (3 hours). Both appear to be roughly the same price. H&W do offer 2 day accommodations which I like, but it also involves travel across the border (which can be a multi-hour hassle). Given the choice which of those three doctors is THE best for me? Price is not an issue -- I just want "the best" as this isn't something I can really cover up if it is done wrong. And from what I gather, I'm probably looking at only about 1800-2100 grafts anyways (would you agree)? I am terrified of: a botched job! an un-natural looking job! a huge scar (although I wear my hair short/long enough in back #2/#3 or longer this is less of my concern) pain of staple removal (I read that they are not as easy to remove as sutures and can be quite painful to work out) also that given the distance, I'd most likely have to get them removed at a local hospital. a shaved head and being stuck home alone until enough of my normal hair grows in to cover the HT area -- possibly 2 months?! I just got a very short haircut last night to try and get people used to me with short hair, and I had her buzz the sides and back to a #1 so that I can measure how long it takes to grow out to say 1" or so. pain of needles shoved into my head! YUK! (I hate needles) pain of recovery (I read stories of numbness for months, or headaches, or sensitive scalp, or tight skin, etc.) I know the needle thing sounds like a big deal considering the whole process involves them effectively, but I have been mentally preparing myself for it and I realize I don't have any other choices here. I should mention that I have had Alopecia Areata off and on for probably since 2002. It has been dormant for the past 3+ years though. But back when I'd get the little bald spot in the middle/back of my head, I'd get 5-7 Cortizone injections, so I am hoping the numbing needle and follicle transplant is not worse than that. Other concerns are that I don't want to go through this again. I hear many people talking about their 2nd and 3rd procedures. Given my NW3 head and those grafts do you think I will have to have another, and after how many years if so? Is it the case that my hair loss will stabilize (given my age) or will I forever be losing hair till I'm bald on top? Meaning, if I get a HT, is it going to start to look wonky in a few years b/c my "natural" hair will have fallen out and now I'll have weird patches or something -- forcing me to do this again? What's this business about "shock loss"? Is that something I should be concerned with (given these three doctors and the buzz cut they require)? I read Dr. Lindsay (I think) talked about removing the sutures on day 7 to minimize "railroad tracks". Other doctors all seem to say 10-14 days. Thoughts? Are there any kinds of "guarantee" with these procedures? or are you basically at the mercy of the doctor and just hope things are going to look good in the end -- 8+ MONTHS later? Is there a list of questions anywhere I should ask the doctor (so I can cross check with my own list to make sure I'm not leaving anything out), or is that even a moot point with those three doctors as I can just have faith they are "the best"? Lastly, and this is the doozy, how many people have remorse over their HT? I have read a fair amount of people wishing they had never gotten it done! This really scares me. Is it that those people went to horrible doctors and this is not something I should concern myself with with H&W/Gabel? Thanks for any and all advice, guidance, help, recommendations, thoughts, encouragement, etc...
