Have you Ever Had a Hair Transplant?

Advice for Hair Loss Sufferers Considering Hair Transplant Surgery

My Story

  1. A bit about myself: I'm a 32 year old male and I've had a receding hairline since I was about 24. I jumped on propecia (half a pill) and rogaine relativitly soon thereafter, and either because of that or just because of genetics, the rest of my hair is actually quite full and healthy. I'd say I'm an aggressive Norwood 2 on my left side and a Norwood 3 on my right side. I became adept at using my forelock to cover my hairless but even that slowly became less effective and it was also annoying to have to worry about strategic hair placement all the time. Most people, if they found out I had a hair transplant, would say I didn't need one, and it's true I never felt I needed one, but now that I've had one, it only validated my belief that a modest change to my hairline would make a significant aesthetic result. Now onto that: I had waffled with the idea of having a hair transplant for years. Being relatively young and having most of my hair in tact, I juggled feelings of doubt (would I regret filling in my temples if all the rest of my hair falls out in the next ten years), money (hair transplants are not cheap!), guilt (with so many balding people who would love my hair, was I being shallow in wanting a relatively minor area filled) and even basic philosophical questions like "given I can't stop my body from aging, isn't it better to just accept aging as it comes instead of trying to fight it, which is a guaranteed losing battle?" But recently I decided to stop overthinking things and adopt the theory that if I did my research and gave myself enough time to reflect that this is what I really wanted, then I could go forward with the surgery and live with whatever consequences there were, knowing I educated myself as much as I could at the time. Thus, I met with a number of doctors and did an insane amount of research, to the point I became an untrained expert on hairloss, and ultimately I decided I did want to proceed, but I wanted to proceed with the best doctor I could possibly find. That ended up being Dr. Konior. I had 1230 FUEs, and granted I'm young and healthy, but the work was so well done that 7 days after the surgery I was able to buzz my head so my existing hair was the same length as the new grafts, and nobody noticed I had a transplant - they all only complimented me on the new buzzed look. There were no visible scabs in the recipient area and no visible scars in the donor area that shortly after surgery. Dr. Konior and his staff are utmost professionals and are very good at being available. Dr. Konior has a reputation as being a perfectionist, and everything I've seen thus far has lived up to that. Not only were my recipient area and donor area extremely clean (even Dr. Konior's staff remarked at how unusually clean they were), I had very minimal pain afterward and it was only for the first few days. Granted, perhaps my age and overall health, along with my relatively small number of grafts, led to such fast healing, and I have yet to see how the grafts will actually grow, but so far every expectation of mine has well been exceeded. Dr. Konior is an artful FUE doctor, and while pricey, worth every penny if you can afford it. If you're looking for the best, you might find equivalents, but I doubt you'd find better. I'll update this, and hopefully my sentiments will not have changed, when the grafts grow.
  2. This is a 60 year old patient who returned for a 5 year postoperative visit. He had previously undergone placement of 3250 grafts to reestablish his frontal hairline and to enhance density within his thinning frontal and crown regions. Multiple views are presented to demonstrate his density gains, including part views through the frontal hairline.
  3. This is a 63 year old professional hairdresser who requested restoration of his balding scalp. He presented to my office with a history of using hair dye to camouflage his graying hair. He underwent a total of 5250 grafts which were performed in two sessions, each one year apart. The initial 3000 graft session provided restoration of his frontal hairline. The second session used 2250 grafts to enhance density in his midscalp and crown. Presented are photos taken three years following his original procedure. He opted to discontinue using hair dye following regrowth of his transplanted hair.
  4. This 24 year old patient requested frontal hairline restoration. His history included the use of finasteride and minoxidil to assist stabilization of his thinning process. A total of 2320 grafts were extracted from his safe donor region and used to redefine his frontal hairline. Postop photos show his progress at 8 months.
  5. This is a 34 year old patient who requested hairline restoration. He also inquired about filling a left temple defect that resulted from a forceps delivery at the time of his birth. He underwent restoration of his hairline region and the left temple defect using 3063 grafts. Presented here are 8 month postoperative photos. He was fortunate to show strong early growth. Also presented are immediate postoperative and 10 day postoperative graft placement photos.
  6. Plans for hairline shape and location can vary widely depending on age, pattern of loss, donor graft availability and patient expectations. Attempting to achieve an aggressively low (adolescent) hairline can be risky, especially for those with advanced patterns and limited donor reserves. Additionally, a very low hairline may look out-of-place for some men as they age. This is a 49 year old patient who presented for frontal hairline restoration. His goal was to obtain a very low hairline. Following a long consultation he agreed with my recommendation to begin the restorative process with a more conservative higher location, albeit still relatively low for someone his age. He underwent a frontal hairline restoration session of 3353 grafts. He returned one year later with what appeared to be a decent result. Although he was happy with the restoration, he expressed a continued desire to pursue the lower hairline he had requested one year earlier. I agreed to his request and he underwent a secondary session using 1498 densely packed grafts which lowered his hairline approximately one centimeter. The patient returned one year later and expressed satisfaction with the final outcome. He favored a product to “spike” his hair. Presented is his final result of 4851 grafts which shows him both with and without a hair product.
  7. This 46 year old patient requested treatment for his balding crown region. He underwent a session of 3000 grafts to achieve coverage in the balding zone. Graft placement was designed to recreate his natural crown whorl. Presented here are one year postoperative photos.
  8. I just had the transplant done with Dr Konior like an hour back (Thursday). It was such a breezy affair today. I am just 30 years old but my hair doesnt look 30ish so I decided to match it up with my age . I had a consultation with Dr initially 4 months back and he had recommended around 2000 grafts since I was kinda young for a transplant and he wanted it to be conservative. I had loss at my crown too which I hoped would be covered but he told me the importance of conserving hair for the future and placing hair where it factors the most and I did agree with that. I reached the hotel ( Comfort Inn), half a mile from his office on Wednesday evening. Since I live in Indianapolis, I just traveled after work. Since I reached around 6 in the evening, i asked Tom , the manager if he was free and he asked me to come over and we did some paper work and he told he about a place just walkable from the office i could buy food. It was called Pete Market I guess. I went and grabbed some food and headed back to the motel. There's a walgreens and a bank of America too. I just withdrew some cash to pay for my toll . I then washed my head, face and neck with the antibacterial soap , had a medicine, and headed to sleep after a while . I was picked up early in the morning around 6:15 and by the time I reached, Dr Konior was already present. I spend a few minutes with a nurse over there and Dr Konior came over. We talked about the hairline and since we had already agreed with the hairline, we did not have to deviate much with what we thought would be best for us. Dr Konior then asked me to draw the hairline I wanted and I did so and he said " hmm so you want a GQ magazine's cover guy's hairline' . I laughed and said...umm maybe He then drew the hair line and I said that was fine with me. But he started taking pics over and over again and started perfecting the hairline until he felt it was all good. He might have taken over 10 pics and modified the hairline to make sure it's perfect. They then gave me some me medicines and took me to the surgical room. I could see the doctor going over the pics again and again which I was guess was his planning what was best for me. They asked me to lie down to take the donor.it might be 8am or earlier by then. And I did not see what was done but i felt small prickings which was to numb me i guess.I had made sure that I slept late the previous night and woke up early today so that I would for sure be sleepy even if the valium did not work on me;) the next thing i knew was the clipping which I guess was the donor being stiched. It might have taken over an hour. And then I was turned back facing my head upwards for the transplant to start. And all i knew was I waking up at around 12:30 and asking if I could go to the restroom. It was over in 2 mins and I was back to my baby sleep. And the next thing I remember was them saying its all over. and i was like wow. Did everything just happen in 30 mins?. But it was 5pm by then. And the doctors said I was a very very good patient as I did not disturb them the least. And another good news he told me was instead of the initial 2000 -2400 grafts we had planned, he went to 2960 ish and I was like wow, thats a bonus. And he was very kind enough to not charge me for it. He only charged me for 2600. I dont' know how many doctor's do that. First of all he tell me we can do with very less grafts. Then he does more grafts and on top of that he dont charge for the extra grafts. That speaks volumes of how professional he is and how much he thinks about the welfare of his patients. So now am back to my motel with the ice pack and ready to take the meds and will head back to his office tomorrow for some cleanup again. And I have not still seen my donor area as I had grown my hair long like 4-5 months and its covering all of my donor. If someone looks at my head, they would have no clue as to where the donor hair came from . I will be posting my pictures soon as I currently don't feel like walking around with my camera and taking pics. But I promise I'll do it this week. And here's a link to my blog I had created a few months back Hair Restoration Social Network - Hair Loss Patient Blogs. So I guess my wait begins with the work of my magician Dr Konior.
  9. This is a 26 year old female patient who requested a lower hairline. Her examination revealed stable hair throughout the scalp and excellent donor hair characteristics. She underwent a highly-refined dense-pack procedure in which 2161 grafts were placed along her frontal hairline. Presented here are 17 month postoperative photos along with a 24 hour postoperative graft placement photo.
  10. This is a 37 year old patient who presented with a history of slowly eroding density along his entire frontal hairline and within the central tuft/midscalp region. His goal was to create a natural, high density appearance throughout the entire thinning zone. His restoration consisted of a 3000 graft session using highly refined grafts to dense pack the frontal hairline and central tuft/midscalp regions.Presented are one year postop views. These include a part view directly through the bald central tuft to demonstrate the density gain achieved.
  11. This 53 year patient requested frontal hairline restoration. He was particularly bothered by recession along the entire length of his frontal hairline and by diffuse thinning within his frontal tuft. His primary goals were to reestablish a new hairline and to enhance overall density in the frontal region. A total of 3559 grafts were used for the hairline restoration. Presented are one year postoperative photos. Also included are immediate and short-term postop views.
  12. This is a 52 year old patient who requested frontal hairline restoration. Graft placement was performed without trimming or shaving the recipient site to accommodate his desire to mask evidence of the restorative process. A total of 2278 grafts were placed into the target zone. Presented are nine month postoperative photos.
  13. This is a 30 year old patient who presented with extensive hair loss that extended from his frontal hairline into the crown region. He underwent full zone restoration with a single session of 4478 grafts. The primary focus of graft placement was directed to density enhancement in the front half of his balding regions. Presented are 10 month postoperative photos that attempt to show a full representation of his restoration.
  14. This patient initially presented at age 57 with a request to restore his frontal hairline. He was a lifelong performing musician and had hoped to restore a bit of his youthful hairline glory to complement his appearance on stage. He received a total of 3870 grafts for his hairline restoration. I saw him annually for 3 consecutive years and was able to take photos with different hairs styles and hair lengths over that time period. Also presented are some views with the hair parted directly through the graft zone for inspection of the density gain that was obtained. The part views were taken during his 3 year postop check at which time he had just celebrated his 60th birthday.
  15. This is a 50 year old patient who requested redefinition of his receding frontal hairline. He appeared to have a very stable pattern with thinning confined to the frontal region. He underwent placement of 1791 grafts to redefine his frontal and temporal hairlines. Presented are 14 month postoperative views.
  16. This 56 year old patient presented with a history of two prior hair transplant sessions. Although he appeared to have a decent hairline for his age, he was not satisfied with the density that was accomplished in the frontotemporal recessions and felt that some of the grafts looked “surgical”. He requested a hairline "tune-up" and subsequently underwent a session at which time 1827 grafts were placed into the frontal hairline region to boost local density and further refine the area. Presented are one year postoperative photos.
  17. This is a 34 year old patient who requested density enhancement throughout his thinning crown and midscalp regions. A total of 3032 grafts were placed into these zones. Presented here are 2 year postop photos. Various angles and part views are shown to best depict the density gain and overall coverage that were accomplished.
  18. Background I'm currently 35 and started losing hair around 10 years ago. By the time I was 29, it was pretty noticeable. Its funny how things change. When I look at my pictures at 22, my hair looks as big as my head. So, In around 10 years, my hair loss went from a 0 to NW5A. So did my confidence, but towards 0. HT Research A couple of years ago, I checked out a chain clinic, but the price was prohibitive at that time. I was lucky I didn't proceed with them. Last year, I decided to give HT some more serious thought as I was in a better position financially than in the past. I luckily found this forum. After some initial research, I went on to do a couple of consultations locally. I would have made mistakes as I didn't know enough to make a wise decision at that point, like any newbie. I just wanted hair and was very interested in getting something done locally. Luckily some good people in this forum provided the guidance I needed. Forum and people This forum is a life saver and so are a few people who are dedicated to helping others. I particularly want to thank "Spanker" for guiding and mentoring me. Without him, I would definitely have made mistakes. God bless him for being who he is and I hope he gets to keep all his amazing hair forever And without this forum, nothing would have been possible. So thank you to the people who maintain it. For people who think there are advertising/marketing here, yes, you cannot avoid/control it just like in any other forum. There will be good and bad in everything. It is up to you to do the required research, contact people via PM and recognize who is who based on their previous posts/activities. I suggest you spent a lot of hours as this is a life changing decision. I probably have spent 6 months' worth person hours on HT and it was all worth it at the end. Doctor selection I have had 3 in person consultations and numerous online consultations with a lot of well known doctors. With the help of this forum and members, I grew wiser with each experience and had a good idea of what I should expect from HT and what I will need. Now it was down to picking from the very best. One thing, as everyone says, do not let money or travel be a factor in your decision. HT is not a joke. As someone who went through it recently, I can tell you that you better take it very seriously otherwise A) you wont meet your expectations which can be even more depressing B) you could potentially damage yourself C) Its not just getting HT from the best of doctors, Post OP instructions are as important too. So read as much as you can, compare post op instructions from the best doctors and do everything right. Some small things like exposing to sunburns can make or break your HT. Dr. Konior - doubts What can I say. Any patient of his just sounds thrilled, too thrilled. I was skeptical initially. I have come across occasional sub par results from pretty much every surgeon but not him. Initially I was wondering how this is possible. There has to be someone, because if someone gets a bad result, thats when they come online and write about it. I tried and tried to find anything, but found none. Talked to his patients and everyone seemed to be very happy. Of course, it is not possible to talk to everyone of them and most of his patients do not post either. But i'm sure if someone got a bad result, they would post. So I came to this conclusion. Either he meets/sets everyone's expectations correctly, or he takes care of any problems that they may have. After my experience, i believe it is the former. Also initially I was skeptical about someone's ability to place all the grafts by himself. But after seeing him in person, I have no doubts he can probably complete a triathlon pretty easily. . Dr. Konior - Final opinion One word - Yes, they were right. He is really really good. I didn't go for a consultation in person, went straight for the surgery. After my many consultations, I knew what to expect and after my research, I was comfortable with my decision about him. In my consultation before the surgery, he pretty much said everything the way I wanted it to be done. I really didn't have to change or discuss much. Then I knew I had made the right decision. His surgery was smooth, scalp was extremely clean compared to the pics that I had seen online. I don't know what he does, but it was so clean in a day and scabbing was very minimal. My recipient area was just perfect in placement and coverage based on my permissible donor. Also, I don't believe anyone can match his patience and response time to your questions, both pre and post OP. In fact, i'm amazed that how detail and prompt his responses are. He makes you feel you are his only patient. There is no nonsense about him, very professional. Surgery I'm not going to too much detail as many people have already described this to the T. All HT surgeries go pretty much the same way. You take pain killers/valium and some sleep, some don't. Dr. Konior said he wanted me to be pretty still and I guess I was since he said I was a good patient at the end. I barely remember anything about the surgery as I was half asleep, kind of like in a dream. I only took one break for lunch. Surgery is the easiest part of the HT process, trust me. That should be your least concern and no, it is not painful. Dr. Konior was able to do 3525 grafts for me. My donor density is not all that great. He did the best that is possible which I don't think can be bettered. I honestly don't think anywhere else I would have got the same numbers and placement that he did. Again, it is just not about density, it is about what works for me. He put around 3000 grafts in my hairline and frontal third and around 500 towards the crown to make it appear as thinning. I'm happy with what I got, now yield is another story. I can't speak for it yet, but based on what I see so far, i'm happy. I'm also Asian, so my hair caliber is probably different and hence the distribution too. Post Surgery Initially I was very nervous. This was the most worrysome part for me about HT. What if I can't follow post op instructions correctly, what if I make a mistake etc. I have an advice for future HTers. Its really not a big deal. If I did good (i'm very paranoid), so will you. There is not all that much to do to be honest. The least you do, the better. Even if you make a mistake, you will survive. Just be careful with the recipient area. I took two weeks off and only time I wore a hat was one time on the forth day for half an hour. I didn't even wear a hat back to the hotel. If you choose to wear a hat, be careful to wear one thats loose. I didn't understand the concept of icing. I only applied it for like 2 minutes at a time. I don't have much experience with injuries/doctors (thank god) for last 15 years or so. Since I didn't ice correctly, I got some swelling, but it will pass. Donor area was painful for me post op. For some it is, for some it is not. It also doesnt help that I stopped all pain medications after day 4. Also, know that the scar will take at least a month to heal. I'm writing all this for future HTers. If you already have had one, you know. Since my scar was so tender, i was very worried about removing the sutures. I got my staples out the forth day as I had to go back home. That was painful but not too bad. Good thing is it is over in less than 10 minutes. Now back to sutures. I was expecting the worst for it and was really scared. But it was under 10 minutes or so and wasn't as bad as I thought. If you are in the DC area, i recommend going to the Patient First in Sterling, VA. Only cost me $15 and 30 minutes, and a doctor does it. And that place is just too good, for other things too. 5 stars from me and thats difficult to get. Post HT impressions Its been a month at the time of this writing. I'm very happy with my doctor and his office. Also, forgot to mention Lisa and Tom. Both really good in what they do and good human beings who care for you. I'm wearing a hat to work after 2 weeks of staying home. I am not comfortable exposing myself in this condition. Some people are, and some are not. Luckily i can wear a hat to work. I have cut my hair really short to make it even with the ht area. Even though I was an NW5, I was doing a massive comb over to hide all that. You can see that in my first pic. This is from just a couple of weeks before the surgery. Hopefully in a couple of months I see growth and can go without hat. It is safe to wear a hat after 2 weeks. I'm not on prepecia or rogaine. I am just not comfortable with the sides of propecia and not sure if rogaine will help or hurt me. Have read too many conflicting opinions on it. In any case, if the transplanted hairs grow well, i'm much much better off than what I was before. I am not hair greedy, i'm hair needy . In a way, i may not be doing 100% justice to Dr. Konior's work as I would probably have gotten a stellar result with them, than without them. But i'm hoping it is still going to be good. Expectations I haven't lost any graft and have been very careful in every aspect post HT. So I hope I get good yield. i'm happy with my placement and will be ecstatic if I get growth for what I got. Keep an eye on my hair journey! Advice HT is not a joke. It is a REAL surgery. For some, it doesn't sink in until you get one, like me. Be prepared to spend a month being uncomfortable, painful (if you take medications, you will be better off) and worried for a while until the growth happens. Do your research. You probably won't go wrong with any of the top 5 doctors. I don't want to name anyone as it varies for people. All I can say is based on my experience, Dr. Konior is top notch and up there. You won't go wrong with him. I don't think he gets enough credit as most of his patients do not post as much. I have no idea why. Just wanted to post a helpful link from Spex. It summarizes things pretty well for newbies. http://www.hairrestorationnetwork.com/eve/145591-hair-transplant-tips-info.html I'll be posting my progress pictures soon. I also want to give back to the community as others have done for me.
  19. Hey guys, This is my first post and I wanted to share my journey and hair transplant by Dr. Raymond Konior, who is located in the Chicagoland area, US. I had roughly 3950 grafts all placed by his skillful hands and have been extremely pleased with the progress so far. It hasn't even been three months since my July 2012 procedure but I felt I should start a post to encourage anyone else interested. This network truly helped me get to the decision I feared regretting-- going with a bad surgeon. So for that I thank you guys. Fear not with Dr. Konior, he's an artist like many have stated prior; particularly with realistic density and masterful hairlines. Below are images from the night before the procedure, 3 days after, and 2.5 months in. Here's to more progress. Let me know if you have any questions or thoughts. Hair Restoration Site for Sam Spade
  20. So I had a transplant 2 1/2 years ago: FUT 1750ish. I am not devestated by the results, but am relatively unhappy with several aspects: 1) Density. Well, as you can see from the pictures, the coverage isn't optimal but I understand the limitations of this procedure and I am looking into getting another transplant soon, just to fill in the existing area. 2) Hair color of transplanted hair: it might not be readily apparent, but a lot of the transplanted hair is black, or much darker than my other hair. My initial though was the transplanted area must be a darker hue, but then I did a little experiment: I plucked a hair from the back of my head, near the donor area, then plucked one of the transplanted hair. I did this several times, and the results were pretty conclusive: the transplanted hair was significantly darker (black) than the hair from my donor area. 3) There are several 2 folicular unit hairs on my my hairline. This is have dealt with in the past by plucking, but it's somewhat aggrevating that my surgeon though this was acceptable. 4) dimpling/cratering near the center of my hairline: the transplanted hairs in this area seem to be plugged into holes that were too big, creating black dots at the root of the transplanted hair in certain areas, particularly the forelock. The surgeon I am looking into for the my second procedure is Doctor Konior. The first, I will not give out his name here but will divulge it if requested by pm. I will say he is stationed in the east coast area, between phili and dc. So my questions: 1) Is it common for such a drastic disparity in color between transplanted hair and the natural hair? 2) Any opinions on Doctor's Konior ability to repair and improve my existing results? I have read about and seen alot of results of his work on this website, and I am cautiously optomistic about what he can do for me? 3) Is it common for 'techinicians' to do the actual tranplants? My doctor just punched all the wholes, and 2 technicians, one I think was in training, put in the hairs.
  21. As many have posted here before, Dr. Konior is AMAZING! I was REALLY impressed with not only what he did for me but the professional teamwork that took place during my procedure. Even though I couldn't see (they covered my eyes), I could hear them talking to one another and based on what I heard, i could tell he ran a well oiled machine. It really was impressive. i remember going in and seeing a TEAM of assistants preparing for my procedure. I wasn't expecting that. I had done plenty of research about hair transplants and certainly in the field regarding which doctor I should seek out in Chicago. I didn't realize there needed to be a TEAM working on me. lol. Maybe it had to do with how many grafts they were implanting (originally 3,500 but he ended up putting in close to 3,700 I think). All the assistants were kind and gentle with me and were constantly making sure I was comfortable. I thought it was a little funny how the doctor told me that I would be sleeping through the 12 (or more) hour procedure due to the Valium they gave me but it's a little hard when they keep moving you around and talking to you/asking if you need a break (which I needed several times). I did my best to just lie there and let Dr. Konior do his thing because I wanted nothing but his best efforts undisturbed but when you have to pee...you have to pee! lol. In the end, they gave me a mirror to see the end results and I was blown away because he ended up covering WAY more than he originally told me he could do! I had far more baldness in my crown area than my temple and hairline. I had told him that was the area I was most concerned about at this moment in time and could wait a year before getting my hairline done. At first he was reluctant and gave me the impression that he didn't want to work on that area but he'd rather work on my hairline (since that is what most people would see). I guess he had a change of heart or saw that he could cover my crown as well as other areas once I got into the surgical room. I don't know but man was I grateful!! As I mentioned, I was very impressed and amazed at the final results. They went beyond what i thought it might look like. Granted I just had it done so maybe it will look far different once the hair starts to grow out, but I'm not worried for the moment. I'd love to share photos but only Dr. Konior has those and even though I asked for copies, I never got any. I can take post-op photos myself and post those I suppose but you know how difficult it is to take photos of yourself without help. If anyone has questions or thoughts regarding hair transplant or even Dr. Raymond Konior, I'd be happy to answer as best I can
