Advice for Hair Loss Sufferers Considering Hair Transplant Surgery

My Story

  1. Hello everyone, I'm 32 years old. I have a receding hairline. All of receding happened when I was 16-18 old, the so-called puberty period. Both my father(55 years olds) and my grandfather(75 years old) have a receded hairline at the temple areas, like mine. Their state doesn't differ much from mine at their senior age. Based on that I guess that my receding is already stagnating for a long time. Last year I got really concerned about my appearance and committed to do something about it. I stumbled on your forum, started researching the subject. 4 months ago, I started taking finasteride and 1 month ago applying minoxidil solution. I've sent enquiries to several major top tier clinics from hairrestorationnetwork recommendation list and was getting ready for a surjery. However 3 of them rejected my case, wording it as I don't need hair transplant procedure. I got really discouraged after this because the subject seems to become very controversial. Most of them claimed I will need 1500-2500 if i decide to pursue this matter. Next pictures are meant to highlight my expectations: One clinic cautioned me that I don't get a natural hairline after HT, it will always be either too dense or too sparse. And even, they more warned me to not get carried away with some clinics who promise me otherwise. Is that true? Another one said that my hairline is only slightly accentuated, it might not even be operated on. And claimed I can possibly improve my condition by taking oral minoxidil 5mg along with finasteride 1mg. What can I expect by following this regimen? Does it promise 80, 90% restoration? Or will it thicken miniaturised hairs to the level of fully grown adult hair? Another clinic stated that implanted hair, based on their own personal experience lasts at least 15-20 years. Is that real? I thought the hair from the back of the scalp is highly resilient and lasts till the end of his life. All of them claim that I will have to take finasteride + minoxidil medication forever. I assumed it's just a general recommendation. However, I would like to clarify if it's still a necessity in my case based on my inheritance traits I've layed out in the begging of the post about my dad and his dad having the same hairline pattern at their old age as I do have right now. And also, my receding has been stagnating since my puberty period. Next picture is a preliminary design from one clinic. I worry what they gonna use too much grafts because they claim they try to cover the empty spots in the area above the hairline which looks totally normal to me. And 2000 is the half of my donor area reserve.
  2. After long consideration and plenty of research, I have booked in with Dr.Bisanga on the 3rd of September 2019 in the new Bisanga / Cole Clinic in Athens. A small briefing of myself. I'm in my early 30's and possibly a Norwood 2. Not losing a mass amount of hair but enough to make me feel self conscious. My hairline used to be lower in my 20's. The hairloss started possibly around the age of 25. Typical hairloss. Receding at the temples and the hairline moving back over. I initially made contact with the B/C clinic after the recommendation on Instagram. Obviously I had done extensive research online and via lots of internet hairloss forums. I am also members of Facebook hairloss groups. It was a very tough process, to filter though all the clinics around the world. Initially, I would have wanted to get the surgery done in the UK. As it's a very daunting process to fly to a foreign country for any cosmetic procedure. As my research esculated and knowledge increased, I found that there wasn't many top surgeons in the UK. I'm definitely not saying there isn't any, I'm just identifying that my background checks on surgeons just didn't accumulate to much. I also did a hell of a lot of research on Turkish Clinics. In the end, to cut a long story short, my main essential questions never got the answer I was looking for. My thoughts behind choosing between either Dr.Bisanga or Dr.C was purely personal preference. A flip of a coin some people may say. Dr.C has been a innovator within the FUE industry creating industry designed tools distributed world wide and performing numous FUE transplants. He also trained Dr.Bisanga. My thoughts behind the choice of surgeon was souly based on my research. Also the type of surgery I was requesting and the results to back it up. Dr. Bisangas work stood out by a mile in relation to my specifics. His hairline lowering and temple work was top notch and widely documented online. Meanwhile, although I could find lots of Dr.Cs top great work online there wasn't as many (to my preferences) stood out compared to Dr.Bisanga's. Through many a conversation with my patient advisor Ian Rafferty, I decided to book with Dr Bisanga. I must say, my patient advisor Ian has been top class. Every question (there's been alot) has been answered to a tee. Quick response times, honest and realistic answers. There's no main sales tactic within this process. It made me feel reassured that the patients interests were best at heart. In my photos you will see the two hairlines illustrated on the photographs. The back hairline is what has been agreed between myself and Dr.Bisanga. He did mention that every patient is different.Normally Dr. Bisanga would look for a minimum distance of 7 cm between hairline and eyebrows. In my case due to facial features he has agreed to lower my hairline by 7-8mm. The white dotted hairline is what I would have wanted initially, (if possible) but I am more than happy to take on the knowledge of Dr.Bisanga, knowing he has my best interests and future mature hairline in his considerations. I'm going to document my full Jorney on this forum and possibly some others. Thanks, and I hope this is of some interest on your particular hair transplant journey.
  3. Hello all, I'm unsure if I'm posting in the correct place- so please, correct me if I'm wrong; but I was wondering if I could have some advice from you all? :'D I'm not really sure if I'm the target audience? I'm a young female- full head of hair. However, something I've always been insecure about is my hairline, and my forehead, and I was wondering about if using FUE is a viable method of moving my hairline. (Something akin to what Stephanie Davis has recently done). Quarantine has given me a lot of time to.. frankly obsess over it, but, also do a lot of research, and I was wondering if I could get some more opinions. As far as I'm aware, females experience hair loss differently to males- it being more diffused over the scalp, rather than condensed into one area, like on males. I'm worried that doing something drastic like this, may impact me further down the line. Oddly enough, my mother shows more signs of balding than my father (how he has so much hair still is a complete mystery to me), however, all of the males on his side are balding and/or bald. I know this may give me an insight on what my hair may do when I am older. I was looking to lower my hairline about 1-1.5cm, I have fine, dark hair, and I'm Caucasian, so, yaaay for knowing I'll need a bunch of grafts to achieve a good density. This also may seem like an insanely silly question, I'm sorry, but does the strip method (FUT) harm the rest of my head? Will it pull my forehead back further? And, as a female, is it worth looking into that over FUE? As having a scar at the back of my head is no issue to me. Is something like this even possible? Or would it be worth looking into a different procedure such as hairline lowering (of which is surgical by nature, and doesn't include any sort of hair grafting). Any advice or suggestions are appreciated, and thank you for taking the time to read. 😆
  4. Hair transplant restoration surgery result of 5,308 Hair grafts from the frontal to the crown area on advanced Norwood 4/5 hair loss pattern during one year follow up by Dr. Diep. 5,308 Hair grafts breakdown: One hair roots= 691 grafts Two hair roots= 2,670 grafts Three hair roots= 1,392 grafts Four hair roots= 555 grafts Total hair roots= 5,308 grafts To view this client in detail, please click on the following Youtube video link
  5. This 30-year-old gentleman had a hair loss pattern similar to a class 4v on the Hamilton Norwood hair loss scale. His goal was to rebuild his hairline and add density to the frontal 1/3-1/2 of his scalp. Taking his age and hair loss into consideration we came upon an agreement for what would suite his expectations. After establishing his medical history and understanding the progression of his hair loss, I diagnosed his condition as Androgenetic Alopecia (male pattern baldness), ruling out any other possible dermatological or medical conditions which can cause hair loss. The patient’s goal was well suited to his needs and therefore I planned the surgery accordingly. I wanted to reconstruct a hairline that would be suitable for him as he continued to age. A total of 2,861 grafts were used. I used a significant amount of single hair follicular units which allowed me to create a very natural hairline. This action will allow him to comb his hair without anyone detecting that he has had anything done. These are his results 1 year post-op. https://youtu.be/yAd3Y9cDdP0

  11. This video depicts a 32-year-old woman with ambitious hair goals! She was always bothered by her high hairline and desired a marked lowering of her hairline. She underwent a 1912-graft follicular unit transplantation (FUT) procedure with Carlos K. Wesley, MD in NYC. She can be seen before as well as a few weeks and months after the procedure that was coupled with PRP treatment. All the while, his pre-existing hair is kept at its natural length.

  13. I'm two years out from my hairline lowering procedure with Dr. Radha. I received approximately 1957 grafts to the hairline over an area of 40 sq cm for a density of 49%. Are these pictures consistent with those figures? Thanks for your opinions.
  14. This young man was 29 when he came to Dr. Keene to fill in his receding frontal and mid frontal hairline. She recommended Finasteride, in addition to surgery, in order to help maintain his existing hair behind the frontal area, and transplants for the area of significant hairloss. Now, 18 months after, at just over 30 years old, he looks younger than he did in his 20s . The photos are from before, and 18 months post operatively, when he stopped by because he happened to be in AZ. He was very happy with his results! The graft breakdown is as follows: 1 haired grafts 310 2 haired grafts 567 3 haired grafts 567 4 haired grafts 213 Total grafts 1657 Total hairs 3997
  15. I had my HT done to fill in my receding temples and lower my hairline slightly. I know Shockloss is normal after 12 days and its now day 16 and I seem to be losing a hell of allot when I brush my hair. Anyway I understand shockloss should happen around the receptive and donor areas but it seems to be happening all over my head. Now is this normal? Every-time I seem to accept it I brush my hair and get paranoid again, its a tough time for sure ! Also when should it bloody slow down? Should I start using Rogaine foam? I have never used it before but heard it can make hair grow back stronger and quicker? Thanks so much for reading!
  16. I'm a 28yo male with a 9cm hairline and I'm seeking to lower it 2.5cm via grafting. I've consulted several surgeons in preparation for my transplant and all of them tell me that my desired hairline is too low. I have lived with the embarrassment of a large forehead since high school and anything less than 2.5cm will leave me feeling less than confident. I've actually come a long way since 4 months ago when I started considering HT; I originally wanted 3-4cm of lowering. After observing other guy's hairlines I came to realize that my concept of "average" was a bit off. The average non-receded hairline seems to be around 6.5-7cm. I understand that HT surgeons have years of experience and that a hairline needs to be appropriate for both the present and the future. However, I see gray-haired guys with 6cm foreheads all the time. Plus, if I'm paying for a new hairline, why wouldn't I place myself among the lucky minority of guys who never experience recession? So the big question is, who wins? Should I stick to my guns since I won't be happy any other way? Will a surgeon refuse to operate if he doesn't get his way? I don't think I'm being unrealistic here.
  17. Hi there, (key facts have been Bolded due to long post) I'm a 22 year old male born with a high hairline. I won't go into all the boring details but in my childhood I experienced significant bullying as a result of my large forehead. This (and numerous other childhood issues) led to me being severely socially anxious. I've received various types of counselling and have been on numerous anti-depressants since 16, but the anxiety remains. I the last 2 years I noticed that my hairline was receding even more around the temples, I went to a trichologist and was told that it is unlikely to be MPB and just a natural maturing hairline which will not change much from now on (although it has receded quite far at the temples). This recession caused the anxiety to flare up and resulted in me dropping out of university and quitting my job, as I found myself unable to leave the house and go out in public. I am VERY aware this is not a rational reaction, and that it could be MUCH worse, (I have friends nearly completely bald) but depression and anxiety do not allow you to act rationally, and despite this knowledge I currently find myself severely physically effected by social situations (shaking, sweating etc) I've had a long fringe to hide my hairline as long as I can remember, but any kind of wind blows my hair up, shows my hairline, and up flares my anxiety. As such I can't remember the last time I went out in public without wearing a hat. In speaking with my counsellor I was told that obviously I have emotional issues that must be dealt with, but given my extensive (failed) attempts so far to deal with this problem via counselling, a hairline lowering procedure could help alleviate some of my anxiety. It would allow me to have short, easy to maintain hairstyles and lead a more active, less anxious life. Obviously any procedure would be expensive for a student and I would have to save up for a while, but, what procedures would you recommend looking into? Since I am not showing signs of MPB could I have the current hairline moved down via surgery and excision of excess forehead? Or would I have to get hair implants (FUE etc)? Before I got any procedure done I would study its pro's and cons and discuss it with my counsellor to see if it was the right decision. I hope this is the right place to post this as I know it's not balding by MPB or other causes. Apologies for the long post. Thanks for any advice you can provide! William. Edit: Added poorly anonymised photo of myself and hairline. Will take better photo soon as does not show the recession @ the temples.
  18. This 53-year-old female desired to lower her hairline. Post-operative photographs were taken approximately 20 months after the 1802 FU session. Her stated objective was to "lessen her forehead." This required not only a lowering of her hairline, but also a subtle advancement of her temples so as to provide support for and blending of her newly-transplanted hairline. The profile images (illustrating the contour of her forehead) best demonstrate the positive impact of this advancement.
  19. Hi, I have been looking at this and other forums for a while and recently decided to join. I am only 18 and already my hairline has started to recede. It has been this way for about 18 months at a guess, but in the early stages no body could notice except me. I successfully hid my hairline for a while, but it seems to have got worse recently, to the point where I would avoid going outside if it was windy without a hat on. I am quite an active person, and I wouldn't even go to sports training without a hat for fear of my hairline being revealed as I ran. Anyway I became fed up with having to constantly style my hair and being worried so took the plunge and shaved it down to a #2. This was a big decision for me as I have had medium-long length hair for a while. Whilst the freedom of being able to go running again and play sports is nice I really do not like the way it looks; in certain lights the fine, thin hairs that are where my hairline used to be look absent and it is very apparent I am balding. I have been on generic finasteride for about 6 months and it does not appear to have had an effect, although it is difficult to tell what my hair loss pattern would be without it. I have now purchased some Kirkland 5% minoxidil in an attempt to thicken up the thinning hairs in my hairline. I am also considering purchasing some dermmatch and applying it dry to the hairs in my hairline to give an illusion of thickness, would this be advisable? Thanks for taking the time to read this, and any suggestions about what may help and whether dermmatch is a good idea or not would be greatly appreciated.
  20. ok my hairline is seriously so high up my head you would think im in my 40s. I had spent half of my life dealing with insults and jokes that i became extremely self conscious overtime. People say beauty is in the eyes of the beholder and yes that maybe true and agreeable when you have matured and have a different out view....NOT when your going to a school or any place as a teenager and honestly i never used to care about my looks and when i did tried all i can to ignore it and let it be... but how can that be possible when i can't set foot anywhere without comments and laughter even from strangers.. I no longer go anywhere without a hat. I can't see myself going to college like this.. I have lost almost all my social skills and confidence because of this problem and it seems it is now too late for me to enjoy a single day of my life while living with this fact. What i don't understand is, i have consulted some surgeons and they all seem to have their focus solely on my late twenties and mid thirties.. i understand they are trying to do me a favor since baldness cannot be predicted. However, what about my life until then? What is more important, today or tomorrow? Why should i be considered with how my hair is going to look in my 30's when i my hair looks like **** RIGHT NOW?? I feel hopeless and yes i will try one of the medications but they will not give me a full head of hear i deserve like everone else at my age. But my question is where can i find a surgeon who will perform this procedure.. I am fully aware of the risks involved and I have got the money. Thanks
