Advice for Hair Loss Sufferers Considering Hair Transplant Surgery

My Story

  1. Dear all, First and foremost, I would like to thank the forum members who helped me make an informed decision about the surgeon I chose for hair transplant. Without knowing a lot of real life people close to me who have had hair transplants, it was a difficult decision to make and I hope my choice wouldn't prove to be a ba(l)d one 12 months down the line. A bit of back ground about myself, I started losing hair when i was 20 years of age starting with receding frontal hairline. I knew it was my fate since both my dad and my uncles from mother's side are all bald ( Norwood-7). I initially had to put up with a lot of misery but 5 years ago I shaved my head completely and sported a full bald look with french beard and got lot of complements for the look. I was so glad that I made that decision. Post that, I have traveled around my country (India) and across Europe due to business needs and I never felt confidence level going low whenever I interact with my clients or colleagues. I was proud of my full clean shaven bald look I sported. However, due to cultural reasons in my country, bald people find it difficult to get a proper bride in arranged marriage customs irrespective of how well settled in life you are. Plus, you always have your relatives talking about your hair loss in every function you meet them. Again, cultural differences ! So i decided to go with the most recent and proven hair restoration techniques and was led to believe that FUT hair transplant will be the one for me. After some research i came across this site, went through the list of recommended surgeons in India and chose Dr Radha Rani since I never found a negative feedback about her work or the results. After few phone calls and email conversations, I got my surgery booked on March 21st, 2015. She did clearly tell me that my hair loss is extensive ( Norwood 6 almost approaching Norwood 7 ) and i would need 4000 to 5000 grafts to cover just the top of the head and i would need second session for complete coverage. What i did not realize however was that the success of the complete coverage look is heavily dependent on the number of donor grafts, surgeon could extract which means there is a possibility i could not get my crown covered at all even if i opt for a second/third hair transplant. I arrived at the clinic 8:15 in the morning on the 21st March. It was regional new year and everyone seemed to be so happy in the clinic. After some blood/BP tests and an hour wait, i met Dr Radha. We talked for 30 minutes or so where we discussed about what my expectations are. She then told me couple of hard hitting facts. i) I will not be able to go back to my clean shaven look even if i wanted to because of the scar at my donor site. ii) Because of my extensive hair loss, she might not be able to cover my crown even i wanted to go for second/third transplants. It was hard to digest but i decided to go ahead with the transplantation but have realistic expectations. Firstly, i told her i don't want a very low hairline and i will be content with a matured looking hairline. She was glad to hear that and then told me she might be able to extract 2800 grafts in first session and might be able to cover the front and half of the top. I was then taken to the surgery room. No complaints about the surgery room. I was given local anesthesia and first two hours went with no pain or discomfort when they extracted the strip from my donor site.I think i slept for an hour or so during this period. I was later told that they were able to extract 3400 grafts. We then had a short lunch break and then went back in for the incision and planting of grafts. I was given local anesthesia again and I think slept for an hour or so again when pain started kicking in. There was a lot of pain at the donor site mostly because i was resting on the back which means pressure at the donor. She asked me to take 5 minutes break to relax my neck. The surgery started again and they gave me another dose of anesthesia. I slept for another 2 hours and pain started again. Doctor told me that generally anesthesia generally holds good for 2 hours but it was wearing off quickly due to slightly excess loss of blood. Another dose of anesthesia was given ( i think ) but i could not sleep this time. I could feel the needles drilling at the top of my head. I am not trying to scare people off but this was my experience but again doctor said i bled more than others. I was given a couple of tablets and slept peacefully that night. Next day i went to the clinic for checkup and washing my head. Doctor found no issues except for minor bleeding at one or two donor stitches. I was then given a set of post operative instructions which I am now following religiously. It has now been 1 week after my surgery. I have attached photos taken couple of hours back. I am scheduled to meet my local doctor tomorrow for having the sutures (nylon ones) removed. I am slightly worried because there was minor bleeding at one of the donor sutures yesterday which i think is because i hurt it during my sleep.I am planning to talk to the doctor tomorrow to see if it is going to be a problem. I would appreciate feedback on the photos and your advice on my future hair transplant procedures. Thanks in advance.
  2. Hi All, After all the contemplations and comparing situations with results available online, finally took a plunge. My hair loss story starts back in 2010 when I started losing my hair. Like most of the guys, I never thought I will be a victim of hairloss and that time I thought it's temporary and will come back eventually. Cut to 2012 and the loss was certainly visible. I started looking for solutions online and stumbled over this website from online searches. I did a brief consultation with Dr Radha during July 2014 but couldn't muster courage to go further. Did more of research later, checked various results which were close to my situation. Finally in April 2015 I thought of going for it finally, started conversation with Dr RAdha again and booked a date for 30th June. Her initial estimate was around 3500-3800 looking at my pictures which I sent through email. I booked my ticket for 27th June and return on 1st July. I had some plans of sight-seeing but did not know the weather would be such a plan killer. Went to the nearest beach once and stayed in the hotel for rest of the days. Day 1: June 29th 5 PM Had first consultation with Dr Radha. Reached the place at around 5PM. Soon after Dr came in and had a look at my situation. She gave me sort of good news. First that I have a good donor area, laxity is good, I dont need 3500 grafts but 3000 around would do fine. The not so good news was, my hair is fine, I would need a second session down the line (maybe after 3 4 years). She made a mark of my hairline which we discussed about. I went with conservative hairline for the first session for frontal zone only. After some queries, I left to come back next day. Day 2: June 30th 8:30AM Had my breakfast at 7:30AM and reached the place by 8:30AM. Doctor had provided a solution to wash my head night before and in the morning before coming for the surgery. Doctor arrived at 10AM and after clicking some pics, we went to the OP theater. First the team pulled out the graft, she gave me the news that the density is great so she wont be pulling the default 26cm length graft but only 24cm. She pushed some injections and made my skull numb. The grafts were pulled and back of the head sewn. Had a lunch break and then went back for the placing the grafts. I let the doctor decide whatever would be good. At around 6PM, we were done with everything. The doctor provided me with the detailed instructions. Pills for the night, icepack to place under the neck to reduce the pain. The dreaded night I couldnt sleep at all during the surgery. It did pain a bit in the middle of the surgery, for which the doctor gave a bit more anesthesia and then there was no more of pain. Came back to hotel, had my dinner and pills and tried to sleep but couldnt sleep at all. I dont know if it was me or it happens with everybody else. All the reviews I read, most of them said they slept like a baby but not me. Bad luck I guess. Day 3: 1st July Reached clinic at around 10AM for my first wash. The pain was bearable by that time. One of the assistants gave me the wash while doctor came in for a brief period for some queries that I had. She advised me to stay on Finpecia and also Minodoxil in case it doesnt affect adversely.(I have been regular on Fin from last 3 months). I was provided with a band that I have to wear for 3 days to prevent swelling from expanding. Also some antibiotics for 4 days. On 7th day, I am supposed to get my stitches removed. (14 nylon stitches) On 15th day, I am supposed to rub olive oil or coconut oil gently and leave it for overnight. Wash it next day to remove the scabs. First 7 days, i have to wash my transplanted area with J&J baby shampoo with mild dabbing and the stitched part as well (To not let any infection go through) After 7 days, I can use normal shampoo. I bought two caps to show doctor which one should I prefer after 15 days. She was fine with both. Till July 13, I have taken leaves/work from home so that I wont have to go out of house much. No exercises, swimming, heavy lifting, banging head against anything for a month (precautionary I am putting everythning for a month) No alcohol for 3 days (is beer excluded ) Prevent smoking for few days. And last but not the least, what's done is done. Do not ponder much about what density you are gonna get and what not. The doctor stressed a lot that the numbers are just numbers. 35%, 40% what we say, it differs for everybody. In all I had 3168 grafts. 1s - 930 2s - 2090 3s - 148 before transplant pics are provided in the following link: http://www.hairrestorationnetwork.com/eve/179170-thinking-about-going-fut.html#post2428119 Will provide the graft region pics in few minutes. Have to click and provide. Now begins the period of wait and everyday checking of your growth.

  9. Hi All, I would like to share my hair loss journey with fellow hair loss suffers. I had the privilege of having my HT with Dr Radha of Visakhapatnam, India About of info about me: I’m an Aussie from down under (Australia) I have been suffering hair loss from the age of 19. I have been on Propecia for about six years which gave me a full head of hair again. After six years, I started bad side effects which affected my man hood….Not good! I stopped Propecia and used Rogaine which seemed to have stopped or slowed down my hair loss but definitely did not regrow any hair. After using Rogaine for about two years, I thought I’d see what my hair would be like without the use of Rogaine. In about a year after stopping Rogaine, I lost a lot of my hair from the front of my hair – refer to my pre op pictures. Being a hair loss sufferer, it really affected me emotionally and physically, so I thought I’d do a search Google for a solution. I stumbled on this marvellous site and thanks to fellow hair loss sufferers, for sharing their hair loss journey; I felt really inspired and was on the search for a Dr that would perform my HT. Research: After looking over lots of HT results by patients, I found Dr Radha was highly praised and produced great results. I was truly inspired by one of Dr Radha’s patients – JacobG who has similar hair loss to me and is another fellow Aussie =) Jacob has offered me loads of support and advice..so thanks Jacob! Inital contact with Dr Radha: After contacting Dr Radha with photos my hair loss photos, I booked 18/11/13 for the date of the procedure. Dr Radha required $200AUD to secure the date. Just a FYI Dr Radha is extremely busy and it may take her upto a week to reply to emails…but be patient! India Visa: I applied for a Tourist Visa which approx cost $100 all up Flights to and from Visakhapatnam: I chose Singapore Airlines and SilkAir expect to pay approx $1135 to $1350 return Hotel Accommodation: I wanted something nice and comfortable, so I searched Tripadvisor and found Novotel Visakhapatnam which has excellent reviews. Novotel has a midday checkout, so I suggest a cheap hotel that you can spend 8 hrs while you wait for your 11pm departure. I stayed with Jukasotel Hotel. I probably wouldn’t recommend Novotel. I pretty much stayed in the room the whole time, as there is nothing that is walking distance other than the beach. I would recommend something that is close to restaurants and shops. Things to buy/bring before the trip: - Travel pillow - Pain killers - Sleeping tablets - Snapback cap that sits high - Johnson & Johnson baby shampoo - Shirts with buttons that run top to bottom The BIG DAY: Dr Radha’s driver was unable to pick me up, so Dr Radha organised my transportation with the hotel staff. Dr Radha advised to be at her clinic at 8:30am I was greeted by one of Dr Radha’s staff who provided me with some forms to fill out, slippers to wear, change of clothes for the procedure, washed my head and performed my blood test for HIV. At about 10:30 I met the famous Dr Radha which I must admit, I was kinda star struck LOL I guess it’s because I’ve been waiting 8+ months for this day. Dr Radha took pictures of my head and I provided photos of what I use to look like before the hair loss. Dr Radha inspected my hair and to my disappointment she gave me some bad news; she said that I have a combination of things going against me such as: Caucasian skin colour with black asian hair( my hair grows like an afro) and very low density in the donor area (All my relatives on my mum’s side have hair low density) I was hoping for 4000+ grafts but she told me to expect only 2,500 grafts =( But on the upside she mentioned before the hair loss, I probably would of only had approx 4000 grafts, so with 2,500 grafts it is more than 50% of what I originally had =) Procedure: Strip removal took approx 2 hours and felt absolutely no pain during the removal of the strip. Had a quick lunch break and back to the operating theatre for the placement of the grafts. For the first Four hours, I ended up falling asleep but then woke up because of slight back pain. Graft placement took 5 hours. At the start, during and end of the procedure, Dr Radha and her staff were very friendly, professional and always checked on me to make sure I’m comfortable. Donor Strip: 28cm long and narrow strip was removed 1 hair grafts: 1300 2 hair grafts: 1384 3 hair grafts: 23 1st night of sleeping: I highly recommend a travel pillow, so that the travel pillow rests on your neck and not on the back of your head. Take sleeping tablets if you can acquire some. 1st day Post Op: Dr Radha’s driver picked me up from the hotel for the 1st hair wash which was performed by Dr Radha’s assistant. Dr Radha checked on me and provided me with some Post Op instructions Post Op Day 1 to 10: I was extremely careful to not touch/knock my recipient area. I only wore a cap when going out in public. Slept as much as possible to help healing of donor area, and to avoid the possibility of something or someone touching/knocking my head. About Dr Radha: I found her to be very professional, friendly, down to earth and very caring about your health and well-being. I can see why people speak very highly of her and i would not hesitate to recommend her for people who are considering a FUT.
  10. Well, finally decided to take the plunge and from what I have read of Dr. Radha it appears I am in good hands. The big day is the mid-august weekend. Uploading a few pics. The Dr. believes I will need approx 4000 grafts (approx 2000 for the crown and 2000 to restore the hairline) Am also posting pics of my donor area. Could any senior members comment on how good/bad it looks for extracting approx 4000 grafts? Do you think I can make the number? Also have been reading about scalp laxity playing a major role in influencing extraction. I dont have a clue how to measure/determine mine. Are there any excercises that need to be done to improve this pre-procedure? Any guidance would be most appreciated.

  12. A Medical Graduate aged 26 presented with class VI Androgenetic Alopecia. Busy school schedule did not give sufficient time for himself. But the prolonged distress came to an end when he finally found time for Hair Transplant Surgery before joining his Post graduation program. 3643 FUG were transplanted to cover the entire area in one session. He was overwhelmed with the results as shown in the pictures taken at the end of 10 months. one hair grafts - 800 two hair grafts - 2640 three hair grafts - 203 Total number of grafts - 3643 total number of hair - 6689
  13. A 26 year old male presented with class IV Androgenetic Alopecia *and wanted* hair transplant surgery. On examination the crown area showed mild thinning, for which the patient accepted to opt for 1 mg oral Finasteride. 1 hair grafts = 1134 2 hair grafts = 1690 3 hair grafts = 63 Total no. of FUG = 2887 Total no. of hair follicles = 4703 As evident from the pictures taken at the end of 15 months, the patient expressed content with coverage to the frontal, mid-scalp and the crown areas. He is on oral Finasteride.
  14. Here is 24 year old Indian patient with diffuse hair loss. A total of 2113 grafts were transplanted using the strip technique. He has had minimal shock loss. 1-hair grafts - 400 2-hair grafts - 1648 3-hair grafts - 65 Total number of grafts - 2113 Total number of hair - 3891
  15. Dear All, I am 33 year old, have been losing hairs from last 4 years. In the past I have used Propecia and have wasted money in the Laser therapy but nothing worked for me, anyway I decided to go for a HT after reading reviews on this website and decided to go with Dr Radha Rani and I am very delighted to say that it was absolutely a right decision. Dr Radha Rani was very professional and genuinely helpful .I received total 2510 grafts (600 one hair, 1760 two hairs and 150 three hairs) .The surgery was painless; I even forgot my painkillers and other medicine in the clinic however that night I slept like a baby. I was bit scared of having a swelling on my face or having a noticeable scar in my donor area however I am very happy that neither I had a swelling nor a scar. I had my HT on 29th Feb and had hair cut on 23rd of March .My hairdresser was so amazed to see my HT that he has already stared recommending Dr Radha to his customers. Anyway after having my haircut I have started losing all my new hairs including other hairs as well and am looking bit bald now L, I have also have numbness in my recipient and donor area .As per Dr Radha its common to lose the hairs after HT however hairs
