  1. Ok guys, here's a short video on Steve, who is 5 months and 4 days out from our repair case. Now you seasoned veterans will know that only the beginning of growth is starting. BUT...take a look, you can see we have established a hairline and the forest of mid scalp coverage is there, it just has to grow. He had had SUPPOSEDLY 2500 grafts, which I doubt due to his result and due to his relatively low density donor region, by another practice a few years back. Like most guys who had a poor result someplace, he was really concerned he was going to get scammed again. Fortunately, he had a great attitude, did a good job cleaning, and had an easy case. Now its just waiting. In the video I interview him under poor office lighting, and he already looks better than his preop pics taken in the same light. Then he sprinkled on some fibers, maybe a little too much actually on the crown, but if you saw him in a store, you'd never know. THIS is how lots of guys can pull off a case without a lot of questions from co workers. He's local and I'm sure we'll get a followup in a year. The video is: Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
  2. Its that time of year. I'll be at Big Sky Montana this weekend, never skied there before. If anyone wants to have a chat before I attempt Big Couloir on Monday, simply call my office 703 356 3260. And I'll be at Park City doing the usual ski with old patients and meet a few new ones March 8-13. Same deal... And if you are one of my old patients who wants to ski with me and a few others at Snowbird, I'll buy you lunch and a beer. Dr. Lindsey
  3. Mr. R WAS a healthy very active guy working out 5 or 6 days a week vigorously. He had an uneventful hair transplant with us in late October, came back for his scar check at a month, and like most of our patients....we didn't hear from him for a while. At his 6 month mark, he called and told us he'd DROPPED DEAD on the treadmill while exercising in Februrary. Fortunately, the gym is beside both my daughter's school and the rescue squad...which rushed him to the hospital after the manager had started CPR. He had heart surgery...and describes going into the hospital with no hair and being discharged with a crop of hair growing. We do NOT recommend this to start your transplant growing.... He gives a pretty good story and is back training pretty hard and I expect to have a better video this fall. The video is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eGDA-WNd_JA&feature=youtu.be Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
  4. This younger fellow had a low yield strip case elsewhere. We repaired him and packed the hairline. He came in planning for more hair to the hairline fairly soon, but gosh...I don't see anyplace to put more hair, he's likely to lose significantly more hair due to his family genes, and he looks NORMAL. So hopefully we stopped his hair greed for now and he won't do something with me or anyone else for quite a while. The video is: Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
  5. Take a look at this guy's hairline. First off he had a low yield strip case elsewhere that was a bit too low on his forehead...but once the hairline was put there, he and I just opted to pack it. He looks fantastic and of course...has a bit of hair greed thinking that just a couple more placed here or there would finish him off.... It might finish off his bank account but there is no place to put any more hair on his hairline right now. I told him to spend that money on another ski trip and roll back in in a few years. His video is: Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
  6. Lots of you guys hear me preach about how FUE never works as well as strip. It doesn't. BUT, sometimes you are better suited to FUE....for example, you need 1/4 inch haircuts for your work. OR you are a terrible scarrer. There are a few others but those are the big 2 reasons that I'd accept FUE's lesser results than strip gives. Now this doctor has AWESOME thick curly middle eastern donor hair. Here he is at just about 4 years. And like everyone else...he wants to know if he needs more hair. The answer to that is not right now but maybe in the future. So take a look at the video, do your research, and make sure you understand the pros and cons of the various options available to you...not just get sold a procedure that fits your budget by a salesperson. The video is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=waFCfe0HH_I Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
  7. Our patient Jimmy was bald...and we did a medium sized case a while back. Medium due to his fairly limited donor density. Nevertheless, he grew in quite nicely and we did a second case 3 months ago, adding a few hundred singles to his left hairline and working back toward the crown. All of our recent work has shed and we're just waiting. He drove through the area for business and stopped by for this short video. I'm sure we'll see him for results next autumn. The video is: Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
  8. This guy popped in 9 years out from us repairing his strip scar. AND a few weeks after we did that we FUE'd his hairline to repair the work done elsewhere. He looks awesome and of course has a bit of hair greed. We'll end up doing a little FUE to bolster his density BELOW his scarline repair in a few weeks and then of course he'll decide he wants his hair line lowered...it always happens like that. BUT his hairline looks awesome and I'll talk him out of doing more work there at this point. Take a look at our scar repair and his 9 year FUE hairline. The video is: Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
  9. Take a look at this guy. He came in with not a bad look...but he'd had a low density hair transplant locally. And indeed when we outline where he wants hair..you can see how sparse it was. We packed him with 1200 grafts and as usual, didn't hear from him til he walked in a few weeks ago. His hair is fantastic. Now, I get part of the credit but alot of the credit goes to this guy simply having perfect hair to work with. Its coarse, with a good color match, and he styles it perfectly. Its easy to get good results with that combo! The video is: Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
  10. Some of you guys may recall our scientist, who had 2 failed FUE attempts at eyebrow transplantation elsewhere. Now given her ethnic background...her donor hair roots are awesome..so my guess is they simply missed the angle and transplanted hairs without viable roots. We excised a tiny ellipse and got around 120 singles and placed them. I put up her early results back in the spring and she flew in at just over a year. She looks great. The video is: Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
  11. Some of you guys may recall this guy's orginal post about 6 months ago. Essentially he had a couple thousand FUE case by a reputable doctor and had very little growth. Or maybe no growth. Inspecting his donor area showed no donor depletion and scars with hair coming out...probably indicating the transplantation of hairs with no viable roots. We see this each and every week here in DC. So we did a strip repair and he's just starting to grow. Pay attention to his 1.2mm scar, easily hidden by his military haircut and the fact that its actually working this time. The video is: Hopefully we'll get him in next summer for a video and maybe work back toward the crown. Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
  12. In this extended interview with Alex, now a nurse, we delve into his initial journey to Mexico for a bad result low hairline, wide scar strip case that we repaired in 2012 with FUE. Listen to his journal of trying to find a bargain, getting repaired...and then spending years trying to laser off the low plugs put in and micro-needle the cobblestoning from those same plugs. What a journey. It had been several yaers since we saw Alex and he'd brought his mom in for a procedure and Wendy was able to get him to give us this patient perspective. Around 10 minutes in he reviews some of the high points in Spanish. The video is: Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
  13. Last night’s post put me in a reflective mood and I have a few additional thoughts about thinning, transplants and length. I didn’t talk about hair length in Dr. Lindsey’s video and I don’t want anyone thinking hair loss and long hair go together. They do not. My hair hasn’t been this long since 2001 and it isn’t going to stay this way. I grew it out to cover my FUE donor and recipient areas (all my surgical work is in and around my hairline). I did this with each of my four procedures and recommend it to those who want to keep their business private. As far as I know, nobody knows about my work aside from a handful of close friends and family. Advertising hair loss and your treatments focuses attention behind the curtain, where it doesn't belong. It’s much easier to find Waldo when you know where to look. On that note, I currently blow dry my hair and basically have long bangs. I generally wear a hat as much as possible during this “ugly duckling” recovery phase, but I can and do go hatless when necessary. A little planning is all it takes. That said, I normally keep my hair short and neat. To repeat that old line, hair restoration involves a lot of visual trickery. Short hair and low scalp contrast conceal thinning and loss. Indeed, dying my transplanted hair to reduce scalp contrast is something I’d consider if I wasn’t already going gray. Guys obsessed with looking “young” and dying their hair dark often end up with a shoe polish look that draws attention where it shouldn’t. Older white guys with thinning hair and dark dye jobs universally look terrible. That’s not a look you see in nature, which is generally the best measure of any treatment. SMP, which I’ve never had, can contribute to the contrast illusion from the scalp angle. Combined with very short hair, FUE and a nicely shaped head, SMP results can impress. But all density illusions break down with length, and if I had a nicely shaped head I’d just shave it off and call it a day. There are more important things in life than hair, but it didn’t feel that way to my 17 year old self, who committed to this endless fight. My shaved head looks like a still-lumpy proto-planet that's full of impact craters, however, and I don't regret my choices. To conclude on a positive note, I haven’t been excited about my hair since the mid-1990s, when I first noticed fallen strands in the pages of my high school textbooks. But I’m genuinely excited about going gray and getting older. Hair loss in your 30s and 40s is commonplace. Only now do people ask how I kept my hair when all my people went bald. There's still a 17-year-old kid in the back of my head who chuckles each time this happens. I’m entering new and uncharted territory as I close in on 40: no man in my extended family—to paraphrase an Irish saying—has ever combed gray hair.
  14. Dr. Lindsey, Great video. The patient looks excellent too. Nice work.
  15. I'm the dude in the video. I intended to chime in earlier, but my (healthy) aversion to hair loss forums kept me away. More on that in a moment. First of all, a big thanks to Dr. Lindsey and his staff, especially Wendy. This was my forth transplant with Dr. Lindsey, which says all you need to know. Donor hair is a limited resource and hair loss is a never-ending battle. Pick your surgeons carefully. I’m almost 39 and started losing my hair at 17. Every male in my bloodline, going back three generations, went NW6 by 30. I started minoxidil at 18, finasteride at 20 and dutasteride at 22 (replacing finasteride). I’ve been taking 0.5 mg of brandname Avodart each morning for the past 17 years. In the early 2000s—when the forums were less foolish and hysterical—people talked about “the big 3.” Minox/Fin/Niz. I took that to heart and never wavered, which is why I still have most of my hair in spite of genetics. In 20 years nothing has changed when it comes to drugs that work. The guys from the early forums who still have hair don’t have it because they ordered unapproved and untested drugs from China on the advice of online bro scientists. DHT-prone follicles are an even more precious resource than donor hair. Don’t mess around. Get on one of the two FDA-approved 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors and stay on it. Forever. While I’ve had four hair transplant procedures, they have all been relatively small FUE sessions—think 500-1000 grafts. I have thin hair and the illusion of density requires tight packing and multiple sessions. Realistically, that’s true of most people and is what you should count on. One and done isn’t reality for most guys and hair loss never stops. Let me say that again: hair loss never ends. The idea of “stabilizing” loss with meds before getting a transplant shouldn’t be confused with stopping loss—meds slow loss in good responders, at best, over a lifetime. And once you’re taken a surgical stand against hair loss, know that there will be more transplants in your future at your current vanity levels. Don’t think hair loss isn’t going to bother you once you’re reached some unspecified age. If hair loss bothers you now to the point where you can’t accept it, hair loss will always bother you. Finally, be careful about spending too much time on these forums. Countless folks lost hair they’ll never recover as a result of the finasteride hysteria that started around 2005. It’s easy to freak out online, quit the things that work and convince yourself your dick is about to break off and tumble down your pant leg. Don’t believe the hype. Take your meds religiously and if you decide to get a transplant, plan it out with the next several decades in mind. Thanks again Dr. Lindsey. I’ll stop by in 6 months or so to catch up.
  16. This younger Indian fellow had autoextracted his temple hair and lost the front triangles. He rolled in at 2 years and looks great..did a nice 5 minute interview...then just as we were posting this, said his girlfriend didn't want him to be video'd....so we snipped it out but his pics are great. Take a look. Particularly his left temple was so natural I'd completely forgotten we did anything there...and typically that is a tougher area to get to look really natural due to the caliber and angle of the hairs. The video is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=20bT9NuPoW4 Dr. Lindsey
  17. o I realize that this may not apply to guys/girls getting work done elsewhere...always follow the instructions YOUR doctor gives you regarding how to take care of your hair tranplant. BUT, if you go back over the years of my posts, you'll see lots of discussion on cleaning. I always knew cleaning of scabs and debris was important, but somewhere around 2011 I had a great 3000 graft completely bald (preop) lawyer who allowed such thick crusts to form that by day 7, he had "autoextracted" essentially rows of grafts that looked like bald rivers.... We later did a 2nd planned case and addressed the "rivers" at the same time and have several videos showing his progress and results....I'm quite proud of his final result, now about 4 or 5 years out. That confirmed my theory that what happens is on one hand you have hair grafts being revascularized and getting anchored into the recipient scalp...which gets more attached daily... And on the other hand you can get all this thick scabby goo that once solidified...actually has greater tensile strength to other grafts than the grafts do to the scalp....so when a few start to get pulled, you autoextract a river of hair grafts. I've photodocumented this a few times and now have done lots of cleaning lectures and videos. NEVERTHELESS, it seems really rich guys, and doctors and lawyers...never want to clean like I want them to. And frequent readers of my blogs or visitors to my office know that we'll help you clean daily for no extra cost. WE JUST WANT IT TO WORK! So I was particularly enthused when this high powered lawyer, who refused to come for us to help him clean...did a great job. And he's related to one of my favorite professors in my residency. Take a look and if you are one of our patients....do this. Otherwise do what your own doctor says. The video is : Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
  18. For years I've told people that for MOST well nourished male patients....to address hairloss you can 1. Do nothing 2. Wear a wig 3. Use meds (rogaine or propecia or avadart) 4. Do surgery. And for years I've seen hundreds of people a year crying over the money that they have wasted on all kinds of nonsense. In particular I've seen gobs of men and women who have paid medium or large amounts of money to clinics, doctors, spas...to buy laser treatments which have done nothing for the patient except waste time and lower their bank account. An article in this months Derm Surg gives a pretty soft call on if lasers help...concluding with the word MIGHT in the summary. Having published 29 articles in peer reviewed journals, by and large...if something shows promise, the researcher uses a variation of the phrase : encouraging and warrents further evaluation RATHER than might. So before you spend more money on things that might or might not work...do your research and see if it is worth your hard earned money. It may well be working for some folks...I've just not yet seen one come in the office with any results they attribute to a laser. And if the doctor is trying to sell it to you, maybe ask about studies like this. The video discussion is: Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
  19. Hi guys, I wanted to make a new topic to highlight the incredible work Dr. Lindsey is doing. He is an absolute stellar surgeon who Ive had an FUE sessions with myself and he is in my experienced opinion one of the most ethical straight talking Drs around. Many of you regular readers will know what a good guy he is as he dedicates a great deal of time to the forums helping educate readers by answering questions and posting results along with informative videos. Only the other day it was highlighted yet again to me what a great stand out Dr he is as he had a patient in his office quite literally pleading with him to perform surgery due to the patients anxiety surrounding his hair loss. This patient had been told by 3 other local clinics that they would all gladly perform a 2000+ FUT session on him. Dr Lindsey categorically turned him down and spent an hour with him talking him down and explained in depth to the patient he was not a candidate and why. (The patient has very minimal loss and is only 21 years old! ) This is just one example of what a gentleman he is and why I'm proud to represent and work for him and in turn help him gain the exposure he deserves as he puts the patient first. If anyone reading is interesting in gaining a very accurate and honest appraisal by Dr William Lindsey of their hair loss and hair transplant requirements then feel free to reach out to me to me via email anytime : support@spexhair.com Even if you do not use Dr Lindsey for your session i highly recommend you use him as a bench mark as to how you should be treated and looked after for your session. 20. Some of you guys will recall Ed. He's our guy from out of state who had had (I keep forgetting this as he was really really bald and had had already 2 transplants by a national company before he got to me) previous work. We did a good case on him and 3 or 4 months out he got hit by an airplane landing at St Barts. We've done a few videos on him, one has ****pit video as he knew the pilot that hit him. Anyhow, I guess he's the first guy to get hit and live, although it degloved his scalp and removed a fair amount of his transplant. We did another 2 little cases on him and patched this up. He came in a few weeks ago and we did a likely final small case...all of these after our first case have been small as he is at least a class 7 AND he'd had 2 little cases before our medium sized case.So as I've posted in a bunch of videos...REALLY bald guys with limited hair either should do nothing surgically, OR they should frame the face and then work back but not spread things around. Roughly 50% of prospective patients that I show results like this to say its horrible...if one can't cover everything why do anything? And the other 50% love it. We do no "selling" and leave it completely up to the patient as these are really quite tough problems.HOPEFULLY Ed will spin by DC in a year or so and do a final video. His most recent case is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k_7p4NE5XAY And older videos are: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vpBPFPsmIW0&t=6s Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
  21. In our latest ISHRS suggested video on black market hair restoration....we point out 3 common scams that could EASILY be prevented...if the patient would have just done a little research before handing over money to a sales consultant. With forums like this, and youtube...there really is no reason you can't see at least a handful of results by the doctor you are considering. If you don't see their work online...why? Is it because they don't post? Or they don't have results to post? Or they just bought a machine to do the surgery and they really haven't tried it out yet (we heard that one yesterday from a patient's mom....) So educate yourself and look at results and talk to a doctor, not a commissioned salesman...before you sign up. That is not a guarantee of success or happiness, but it is a great first few steps on the road. The video is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-7urg2y74xc Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
  22. This guy is one of the tougher guys we've worked with. Not only is he a machine when it comes to tough guy stuff, but he's a pleasant fellow and he likes classic rock...so much in fact I lost a big bet to him during his first surgery. Results with short hair are really tests of the entire hair transplant team. The finer hair grafts can't be killed or damaged as there really is no "layering" buffer. AND the donor scar is a concern. Frankly he looks better in person and I'm a consistently inconsistent photographer...but he tells you his thoughts in the short interview. The video is: Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
  23. Yeah, I am sure DLR did everything he could...and probably back in the 90's when FUE wasn't common. One of those lessons in why FUT is a bad idea mostly...at least IMHO. To me it is kind of safe for guys who probably will never be bald enough where shaving their head makes sense. But then again, why not just go FUE in that case. And the flip side, on NW 6 cases where you need every graft.. Quite honestly, if you are that bad off even a good HT result at 38, you might find at 55 it's just a mess like poor DLR and just realize it's time to buzz it off. Then from behind you are two small circles away from the back of your head looking like a happy face. DLR is only human and probably looked at those pics and realized it needed work and SMP and maybe some fue to fix it. I hope he did. But he will never be able to have a really short buzz and it be un- noticeable in person. Harry, ironic name considering this thread! yeah, he is well past the point where it looks salvageable. In my own hair loss...per the text books. You can loose 50% of your density and not really be noticeable. I disagree with that as I sure noticed. But I agree it is pretty accurate when you phrase it like "obviously thinning to anyone who looks at your hair in any close manner" And where Harry is now, maybe he is at 25% where it is more like you don't see a bald guy, like his brother. But he is one big shedding phase away from crossing a line where it just will look stringy and unhealthy. At that point it will be time to clip it. He of course has the funds to have the best Dr. in the world work on him and probably with his coloring could easily have a no shave FUE. I am sure top surgeons would respect his privacy and do the meticulous work to do a complex FUE like that. He better do it soon if he really want's too...he has that option still. My guess is he will be like his brother in another 7-8 years. Plus he has a decent face for a buzzed head (sorry, William doesn't). My guess is like 80% of men with thinning hair, he doesn't care enough about it to get a HT. I know when I was in my late 30's and happily married to a pretty wife, I hated my thinning hair and did the best I could. But didn't think a whole lot about it and probably would have just buzzed it off an never done a HT. I think your mindset and priorities are just different when you are in that place and if you are confident. If I was still that 30's guy with the pretty wife...I would never have bothered to learn about FUE. But knowing what I know now, if I had known how inexpensive and simple it was to have done...I would have done it. But I wasn't obsessing enough about my hair to even go down that road to learn. My guess is Harry is happy and it's not as big a deal to him. Plus, maybe he is wise and realizes life is long...and he is going to be a lot of bald. So why risk the scaring and public scorn if he probably would end up buzzing it off. It is a pretty wise decision in the big picture of life to not do something short sighted that might give satisfaction short term and more suffering long term. But if I were his friend, I would for sure tell him 3000 FUE grafts done by a world class doctor is for sure worth looking into. And he probably should go for it all things considered. But plenty or reasons not. Actually, I would not be shocked if he were on here if it is bothers him. I am sure 100's of A list male celebrities have found there way onto this forum. And no doubt a few registered users are names we probably have heard as they learn and ask questions in this anonymous manner.
  24. Here's a young guy we talk with about 10 months out from his frontal case. Although not completely grown in, he looks great and will only improve over the next 3 months. He keeps a short haircut and we show his scar up close. The video is: Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
  25. Well i listened to you guys and i'm back as a 31 year old and think i'm finally ready to pull the trigger and get a transplant, i first came to these forums when i was about 22 and a Norwood 1, hopped on fin, have been on it ever since...i wasn't as consistent as i should of been with my medication early on which is probably why i'm a Norwood 2-3 now but you live and you learn...Everyone on this forum told me to wait until i was 30, including Dr. Lindsey who I had a consultation with years ago. I plan to consult with him again in the following weeks and ultimately have decided to have him do the transplant but i'm just trying to get an estimate on cost, so if i want my temples filled in back to a Norwood 1 (nothing crazy, i still prefer a mature hairline), FUE, how many grafts would i be looking at?
