Advice for Hair Loss Sufferers Considering Hair Transplant Surgery

My Story

  1. Our patient walked in unexpectedly and we did a short interview. WHAT a change in facial appearance that more femine hairline makes. Wendy and I particularly enjoy hearing from all of our patients when our work helps them in positive ways. The video is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aWmEyIhMcIM Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
  2. Some of you may remember this guy...we have several videos over the years.... He was a guy with a limited amount of fine hair, who'd had 2 or 3 cases elsewhere without results who we did a case on and then he got hit by a landing airplane wheel in St Barths. If you go back through our youtube videos you'll see one which actually has cockpit video where you hear the pilots say "what did whe hit?" He got sewed up and we did another case or 2 on him to conceal the injury and he popped by our office on the way to the islands for the winter. I'm planning on visiting him in Feb and will try to shoot a little video where he got hit. But we'll be sure to squat down if a plane is inbound. The video is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jooJYyngeWw Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
  3. Our early modified FUE female sideburn patient just sent pics at 5 years. She has very fine hair but looks natural and is happy. And she was kind enough to refer in both a female and male patient for us to help. The video is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JQNdUP1joWc&feature=youtu.be Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
  4. This fellow stopped by for his scar check, which looks terrific and as he was leaving we noticed that his crown was already growing. This is not typical... and seems to happen in guys who are in no rush at all for growth to start. Had he have been getting married in a few months...this would never have happened. Or at least it seems like that. He's local and I'm pretty sure we'll get a followup at a year. The video is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hdJ3lDSeAX0 Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
  5. We've been having a steady increase in patients coming up from Richmond for consultations and mostly repair surgery. We'll try to make this convenient for more prospective patients by seeing patients in the West End of Richmond, Tuesday Dec 10 from 1 to 5. If there is significant demand, perhaps this will be a regular event and who knows, we could ultimately offer procedures at some point down the road. Wendy and I'll be at the office of Dr. Leslie Cohen, my medical school classmate and friend for 34 years. Consultations are scheduled through my office in McLean 703 356 3260, but make sure you tell us you want to be seen in Richmond on Dec 10. ADDRESS 9900 Independence Park Drive, Suite 110 Richmond, VA 23233 USA Happy Thanksgiving. Dr. Lindsey
  6. In this brief video we show a younger guy who, like a lot of folks...wears a kind of absent minded professor unstyled hair pattern so as to conceal significant hairline recession. We did a nice case on him and he popped in at 2 years, but he's a fairly shy guy and wouldn't do an interview. Wendy and I are both a bit surprised he didn't dramatically alter his hairstyle....to a more sophisticated approach. I've posted 4 or 5 guys, just like this fellow, over the years and pretty much all of them went from a "wild" preop hair style to almost a GQ or highly dressed up style after things grew in. The video is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Tm369IJs5Q&feature=youtu.be Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
  7. This younger asian male had a very asymetric hairline that made him self conscious. We did 1000 FUE's, by hand...not mechanized...and he is growing quite nicely at 6 months. Like lots of our younger guys, he was quite anxious and we heard from him all the time...til it started growing. Hopefully he'll show up at 13 months for final pics, but frankly, once it starts working, particularly on people who were very worried...we never hear back from them. And its a shame, as 13 month pics will be much better. The video is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4mOTLEJu42Q&feature=youtu.be Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
  8. Here we have a long time patient that we've done repair work on, scar repair work, and helped his brothers too. He has hair greed and ultimately we did a 450 graft FUE just after this video...although he looks fantastic already and only time will tell if he sees any improvement in that hairline with more hair. We have a short interview with our patient in the middle of the video you all may find interesting. The video is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4_dZ73TuAeg Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
  9. In this short video we show another 23 year old male who came in with his parents, and a class 5 or even 6 hair loss pattern. We did 2500 or so grafts and unfortunately he did AWFUL cleaning which likely autoextracted some of his grafts. Nevertheless he has a nice result, is happy and now married. When he came for the visit, we did a nice long video interview...but in the hectic goings-on I forgot to turn on the microphone.... We'll repeat that interview whenever we do a second case and this time we'll make him stay local until his wife is comfortable cleaning. The video is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9HkmSRgkD2M&feature=youtu.be Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
  10. We worked on this fellow 5 years ago and did 2 cases on this former hairpiece wearer. He just emailed in a 5 year pic and looks great. The video is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W9DzAeNVPlA&feature=youtu.be Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
  11. Me, 2 months now after FUE. The pictures don't lie: it really is so red compared to my skin: I still have a very obvious redness in my recipient area now almost 2 months after FUE surgery. The marks from the incisions are still clearly visible. It improved slowly until the 2 week mark, but it hasn't changed much in the last 5-6 weeks. Everything went great with the procedure. FUE, temples, front hairline. Unshaven in front. I was happy with the doctor. Both donor and recipient areas seemed good, no problems with infection, swelling, or bleeding. No grafts fell out. Everything clean. For the first month, I took care, didn't get any sun, all that good stuff. I was calm and ready for the long wait for growth, totally unstressed, never looked if I had any hairs growing in. Didn't look at forums or read a word about hair. I figured the next time I'd be on a forum would be around 9 months: I'd write a post of glory bragging about my new Samson hair and then hang around giving wise words of wisdom and encouragement to guys who are nervous. Instead, here I am at 2 months with this mess. I saw that my recipient area was red, but I knew that some people stay red longer than others. So I figured it's no problem that I'm red in the first month. After the first month, my doctor checked it. Baaaam, he was really surprised. He said it's the reddest he's ever seen. It's also odd that you can still see almost all the incision marks with no magnifying glass; they're like little pock marks and you can see them clearly. My doctor has no idea what's going on. He said maybe it's because I'm blond, light-skin tone? Maybe just bad luck? Maybe something else? There's no real hair growth obviously, too early for that, but other than the redness, he said it doesn't seem bad. But he's never seen redness like this before and doesn't know what to suggest, other than to give it time. Like... many months. Months more of this extreme redness!? Not one month more or two months more, but many months more of this?? That's when I went onto forums for the first time post-surgery to look at people's progress in their first 8 weeks.Compared to the progress of patients I saw, my redness is definitely extreme. Even among the people who come onto forums and create accounts specifically in order to complain, cry and pray for solutions... none of them are near my level of redness. They have what everyone calls "lingering redness": Not me: This guy is 2.5 months after surgery. He was concerned, made a post on this forum about it. I'm definitely much more red than him. Not me: At 2.5 months after surgery, this poor guy was very, very concerned. Made a dozen posts on 5 different forums. My redness is much worse than his. I understand their worries, but oh maaaan, I wish I had their level of redness right now. At their level, some make-up hides it nicely. Or even a little lie about a sunburn. But mine isn't "lingering" like a pesky little intruder that needs to be shushed away, mine is a full-on blood-soaked bandana stitched into my forehead from one side to the other. For what it's worth, I saw lots of comments that fair-skinned, blond-red hair people are more likely to get redness. But at least based on forum pictures and posts, it seems that plenty of blonds and ginger guys have no trace after 4 weeks, while some darker-skinned guys with dark hair also have redness... although none like me. The only example I found of someone close to my level of redness is an Irish patient of Dr. Lindsey mentioned on a forum post: Not me: Irish patient of Dr. Lindsey, the only person I've seen with something close to my level of redness at around 2 months It's not clear at what point after surgery this guy's red picture is from, but if it's the 6-8 week period, then it's the only guy even close to my level I've seen. And at least from the picture, he's not as red as I am. He has a more muted off-purple tone which matches much better with his hair ;-) I'm staying positive and trying to laugh it all off, but it's definitely been a blow for me. I thought I'd prepared well when I arranged 10 weeks free from public appearances. But woops, that not looking good enough now. I'd be fine if I just had the lingering pinkness other guys get, but not in my case: my redness is too distracting to get anyone to concentrate on anything coming out of my mouth. And there's no hiding my big redness. Thing is visible from anywhere. If you can see me, then you can see it. Because I didn't shave the front for the FUE, my front hair is medium-length now and can hide some of the redness at the temples, but it's not enough to hide the front recipient area. And no make-up in the world can cover up that bloody bandana I've got stretching across my head. So it looks like there's no way now that I can go out in public and I'll be cancelling work events I had scheduled from week 10 onwards. Which really sucks for life and for career. I have no idea how I'm going to disappear, but with the way I'm looking, I gotta do it. (Unfortunately, not a joke). How long you reckon I'll have to be in hiding? 3 months? 6 month? More? And that's the best case scenario, that it gradually does heal. There's also the chance that something is wrong, either with me, my skin, the transplant, or something. I've had lots of cuts and wounds before, and everything has always healed normally. I made an appointment with a dermatologist, but the earliest I could get is in two weeks. (I could have told the secretary it was an emergency and gotten in right away, but I don't think we're there yet.) (Errr... at least, I hope not). What I want to ask all of you: 1. What do you think of my situation? Hair transplant disaster? Health issue? Just bad luck that lots of time will resolve?? 2. Any similar redness situations you know of, either you personally or patients or someone else? I'd really appreciate any time-line and photos as I redraw my life plan for the future! 3. Any suggestions? A topical steroid, like hydrocortisone creme, is a possibility, 1% in a store or 2.5%+ with a prescription. But I don't know if a steroid is a good idea yet - or ever - in my case. If it's a health issue or a bigger problem, steroids could make things worse. I also know aloe vera and witch's hazel get thrown around as ideas, but there's little evidence on them and the evidence that does exist is pretty negative on their helpfulness.
  12. Dr. Feller in New York used to do small afternoon FUE procedures of up to a few hundred grafts in what he called lunch time FUE. Dr. Feller doesn't practice much (if at all) anymore, but you may try contacting Dr Bloxham there from Feller and Bloxham and ask if they still do small FUE procedures. I think Dr Lindsey also does some small FUE scar repairs, so you may try contacting him as well. I see you're in California, but unfortunately both I just mentioned are on the east coast. I don't specifically know who does small FUEs on the west coast.
  13. In this brief video we FUE 350 or so grafts into a crown scar, already previously attempted to be revised by a plastic surgeon. We've done 20 or so of these hair into scar cases in the last couple of years and presented our results internationally. Nevertheless....using planting analogies...we're taking relatively fragile plants from the donor region...stressing them with FUE extraction, and planting them in hard clay(scar tissue). By leaving a little extra tissue on the root balls and making the recipient slits a little larger, we've had good success. The video is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q4r_pWCYeQM&feature=youtu.be Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
  14. This 33 year old walked in 33 months out from his frontal case looking great. He does a short interview and gives a closeup of his donor area with a very short cut. The video is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HN0Y_1zbhIA&feature=youtu.be Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
  15. Here we interview a fellow 6 months out from a repair case...I'd forgotten he'd been done elsewhere...so remember, that it'll be a good 15 to 18 months to get the final result. He already looks good and gives some decent advice in his short interview. The video is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H4BkCmjXqo8&t=117s Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
  16. In this short video we discuss a 40ish year old with fine hair, now 20 months out from surgery with a short haircut and virtually imperceptible scar. It can be tricky with the combo of fine hairs, and short haircuts--which limits layering and styling. I am not talking about a combover...but styling definitely adds to transplant results. But due to contemporary hair styles and lots of military patients...we see this alot. He looks very natural and that is the goal...an unremarkable hairline. The video is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E36FReiySXQ&t=26s Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
  17. In this short update, our patient has turned the corner and really starting to grow from his case last winter. We've put up several videos of this guy, who runs a gym a few hours from our office. Interestingly we did have a bit of trouble with donor site irritation and finally figured out that he spent lots of time on weight benches...and I mean LOTS of time... and the sweat irriated his scarline. Once we determined this was the cause, all it took was putting a clean towel down on the bench to rest his head on, to solve the problem. He's since signed up for his second case and we'll surely have updates over the next 18months. The only real question is if he's going to propose to his girlfriend or not. The video is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=khj-teuOL2c Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
  18. Here's another fairly public figure who had a no or low yield strip case by a practice designing a case around low downtime, medium budget and financing options, and slick marketing, rather than doing what the patient needed...which was to pack that front third. Here he is at 8 or 9 months postop looking good and at 15 months, when he's fully grown in, he ought to look great. The video is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KvcJ7st_GyM Dr. Lindsey
  19. Some of you guys may recall this fellow's original post...way back in 2011. Anyhow, out of the blue, he emailed in an update from his sofa, in a state several hundred miles away. As Wendy and I discuss, I really wish he' have allowed us to show his face as that really shows how well his face has been framed. However, he has a public job and we can't show it. He really looks good, although I think his increased stress with a wife and kid, as well as a few years going by...suggest we may see him again for that middle third.... The video is: Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
  20. In this short video we review a recent lead article in The Forum, the ISHRS society's publication for hair transplant doctors. The society has been on a roll lately, trying to combat black market clinics, surgery being performed without a doctor, and FUE slaughterhouses. Essentially the society says what leading doctors have said for years....FUE has limitations, and YOU the consumer need to know the pros and cons of both strip and fue, so that you, not a sales person, can make the best decision for your head. The video is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wHEj9qdSqUs Dr. Lindsey
  21. Hello HT community! My very post on here. My biggest concern here is going to the right FUE clinics and quality of work. I hear mixed reviews often and at cross roads. I'm really interested in getting FUE done in Washington DC, Norther VA, Maryland area and was wondering who are the top doctors in the area? Some clinics I have ran into based on my research have been Dr. Richard Giannotto, Dr. Lindsey and Washington Medical Hair clinic. Please let me know your honest thought about these 3 and If there are other good clinics/doctors out there that I should look into? Thanks! Best Regards
  22. One day I woke up and a huge patch of my hair was missing from the top of my head. To this day I still have no idea how this happened. This completely devastated and destroyed my confidence being a 27 year old male with a huge bald spot in the front of his head. Instead of doing extensive research I just wanted to find the first quick fix as possible and came across Dr. Richard Giannotto website and this was the worst decision I made in my life. I went in for a consultation and was told strip surgery was the best option then i asked about my hairline and beard and was told that could be filled in as well. Signed up for Care Credit dropped the 5k for the procedure and It should of been a red flag when the doctor wasn't even doing the surgery it was 2 assistants who looked like they just graduated out of high school but I still went through with it anyway and now i have this horrible scar in the back of my head for the rest of my life and the surgery was a complete failure. I drive back and forth from MD to VA 2x a week for 2 months to sit under a light for 15 minutes because I was told it would help the growing process. A year after I went back and after seeing no improvement the doctor advised me since i was an African American it may take a little longer for my hair to start growing in and at this time I knew this was complete bullshit and I just got taken and i look even worse than i did before. After waiting another 4 months and seeing no improvement I found the hairrestorationnetwork.com website and start reading other testimonials about Giannotto and realized i had been duped. I found Dr. Lindsay and met with him and decided we were going to do 202 graphs to cover the bald spot in the front of my head and this was a success then we could go from there. Dr. Lindsay actually performed the surgery along with help from his staff and everyone was so nice and it was basically painless and after a week I shaved my head and no one could tell I had surgery. Dr Lindsay took some pictures of the before and after surgery and the 7 days later which I will post and will also post pictures at the 6,9,and 12 month point.
  23. In this short video Wendy and I tell you how we've gone from doing mostly virgin head cases 10 years ago to doing virtually all repair cases now. Common stories from many of our repair patients are: 1. Slick ads and an even slicker consultant with no doctor meeting preop 2. New doctors to hair offering "deals" with their new robot/automated FUE systems 3. Price Unfortunately not only is the donor area now somewhat...or more...depleted, but the patient now has lost all trust that the surgery will work as described, making everyone's job a little tougher. The video is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p3OaVKCSqw0 Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
  24. In a recent hair journal for the ISHRS, Joe Tillman--a pretty well known doctor rep/patient educator, did a bunch of spoof ads trying to warn patients against making stupid hair transplant decisions. Wendy and I discuss a couple of our favorites. I have no relation to Mr. Tillman, have never met him, and other than maybe an email or 2 on a forum discussion years ago, I have again no relation to him. However, I think he is spot on with these ads. And I applaud his efforts to educate the consumer against foolish decision making when it comes to hair surgery. The video is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZTwexSNS5-w Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
  25. In this video we show you a younger girl with a very high hairline and discuss the options of putting hair in front of the current hairline vs doing essentially a reverse browlift, pulling the hairline toward the nose, rather than the brows up...to lower the hairline. We're now doing these in the office in about an hour and TYPICALLY the scar is really minimal and concealed by hairs in front of the scarline itself. However, more than half of these patients ultimately decide to add a few hairs anyway...partly due to chasing that "perfection is the enemy of good" line I always talk about, but partly to address the upper temple/sideburn hairs. The video is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ygB1JIGMOIw Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
