Advice for Hair Loss Sufferers Considering Hair Transplant Surgery

My Story

  1. Here's a 12 month update on our hair transplant repair from a major chain. He's looking good but let me remind everyone that for repairs....final result is probably 15-18 months. Hopefully he'll stop by after all the covid stuff improves and hopefully that is sooner rather than later. In the video is an interview at 6 months that some of you all may have seen. The video is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tIumfvukuAA Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
  2. Hi everyone, Long time lurker here. I have a procedure scheduled with Dr. Lindsey in Virginia on July 8, so I'm about two and half weeks out from the surgery. I intend on documenting it as much and as well as I can. This forum has been a great source of information for me and I want to pass along the help by trying to document whatever I can about the experience, my progress and results. I will try to post pictures at the major milestones, i.e., before (Link), after surgery, 1st & 2nd weeks, 1st month, and then monthly beyond that. I'm 53 years old, although my hair loss began around 25 and I think I'm now a NW6+. I believe that my hair loss/balding has been stable for more than 6 years or so. I've never taken any hair loss medication of any kind ever and not planning to take any in the future as well. I have been trimming my hair to zero for more than 8 years or so. Throughout my research, I was leaning towards FUE method and consulted multiple FUE surgeons. However, during the last few months, it became clear to me that an FUT as the first surgery would give me better options in the future; I could choose to have another FUT or FUE as a second surgery if I wanted. I had reached out to Hasson and Wong in Canada, Dr. Bloxham in NY and Dr Lindsey in Virginia since they are all highly recommended on this forum. I met with Dr. Lindsey in person about two weeks ago and was impressed by his straightforward approach and the facility. His clinic is very close to where I live and another consideration during the time of a pandemic. Details of Consultation/Recommendation by Dr. Lindsey Norwood scale: VI+ Hair type: Fine/Thin Suggested/Estimated number of Grafts: 2500 - 2700 Target Recipient area: Conservative Hairline with coverage on mid-scalp (I originally wanted the temples restored, but Dr. Lindsey is not offering that option to me) Supplemental: PRFM (Platelet-Rich Fibrin Matrix) I may need at least one additional procedure for coverage towards the back and the crown. I hope is to come out of this with good results and emerge from the quarantine with something achieved. Regardless, I just wanted to put my long-awaited procedure and experience on interested parties' radar in case they're interested in following along as a source of info and also to get any feedback from the forum members to get the most out of the procedure. Thank you.
  3. This guy is about my age and had mild hairloss which we FUE'd 10 years ago. Surprisingly he really hasn't lost a lot more. In the video I show his first case and closeups of his scars and a quick view of another 700 fue's we did recently. The video is: He's local and will pop back in for a 6 month visit whenever this covid stuff settles down. Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
  4. This guy might look familar to seasoned forum users. He's one of my favorite patients...mainly because he has the best non-military stories of any patient we've ever had. We started on him 10 years ago with 3 FUE cases, and every few years he emails me at 1am on a weekend night when he shaves his head and decides he wants a few more hairs. Literally this has happened 4 or 5 times. He's been married, divorced, now married again and perhaps we're done. Actually the biggest bummer about hair work is that we get to know guys pretty well...and after their grown in....particularly after we're DONE...we never see them again Since we don't sell any of that quackery that some practices do...we lose track of our favorite patients. Once in a while we'll get an email pic often on vacation with an attractive female with our patient...but that is it. The video is: Dr. Lindsey
  5. Just wanted to share my frustration here. While I am excited about the upcoming surgery, one thing keep turning me off is Dr. Lindsey's communication style. He is very very short (few words) with his responses and hesitant to get into the details. Is this normal? Most of the time his response is 'will do our best'. Honestly, I started freaking out since I paid the advance and scheduled the surgery. This surgery is a big deal for me and years in the making. Am I asking too much and being too sensitive here? I would appreciate your comments. Regards,
  6. @logansays your hair restoration journey is quite amazing and thank you for sharing it with us. I think my hair-loss pattern is very similar to yours and your story is very encouraging to someone like me. I am planning my first HT (FUT) with Dr. Lindsey, Virginia, USA, in July. If everything goes as planned I will do my second surgery to restore my back and crown area. Please post updates whenever you can. Good Luck to you.
  7. Some of you have seen my videos where I try to emphasize the importance of cleaning postop. It really became clear to me about a decade ago when a hairpiece wearing trial lawyer really did a poor job cleaning and by day 7 had literally alleys of crust extracted grafts that were gone! We ultimately did a second case for his crown and addressed those areas and have posted a bunch of updates on him...but that is when it struck me that early on...the crust can have stronger adherance to hairs than the scalp does...and can pull them out! WE offer free help with cleaning postop and still people don't clean. This special forces guy is a prime example. We did a nice case on him...his wife was having a baby and although they were fairly close..he didn't come and did a poor job cleaning. We did a little touch up on him and made him come daily to help him clean. Look at the difference! At just 5 months out he looks awesome. And I show his scar after being in his head twice, and a short haircut. Do what your doctor says...but if you're our patient or going to be our patient....CLEAN! The video is: Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
  8. Hello all, I know that Dr. Lindsey is a highly regarded and a recommended surgeon on this forum. I have been consulting with many surgeons in-person and online until the COVID-19 changed everything. I have built up momentum and knowledge (thanks to this forum and it's members) and do not want to give up because of the current quarantine and related closures. I was thinking of consulting surgeons that are located in the east coast where I can drive to. One of them is Dr. Lindsey in Virginia. My question is why am I not seeing many stories shared by his patients on this forum? interestingly, nothing is mentioned or discussed about Dr. Lindsey or his patient experiences lately. I would appreciate any input you can provide. Regards,
  9. Uk hair transplant clinics = big time fraud I have been to see the so-called consultant from UK hair transplant clinics; I did see a chap named Paul Hill. I got a bed feeling from the start, as it was obvious he was no more than a pushy salesman with no interested in me or what was best for me, all the alarm bells rang straight away. The consultation was a hard sell from start to finish with the so called consultant having minimal knowledge of hair transplants and no interest in discussing anything except for how urgent it was for me to get this done a.s.a.p. to take advantage of the great limited time offers they have, I should preferably pay the deposit there and then or I might loos out on the deal, it reminded me of a door to door salesman offering double glazing! This guy has not had a hair transplant, his hair looks pretty poor and his only semi-medical training seems to be from his teeth whitening business. I walked away from the consultation thinking how desperate people that book with them must be, its obviously nothing else than someone trying to make a quick buck selling something rather then someone that has experience or knows what he is talking about. After the consultation I received an email with pretty great looking before and after shots, I almost starting thinking, hold on now, maybe I wasn’t fair to them, maybe I just had the consultant on a bad day and the clinic is actually pretty good, these results where after all pretty fantastic. After looking at the photos for s little while I realised that I had seen some of these photos before somewhere else. All the fantastic before and after shots they have are stolen from the following coalition hair transplant doctors (none of them works I the UK or has heard of the UK hair clinic): Dr William Parsley - Hair Restoration Surgeons, Hair Transplant, Surgical Hair Restoration, Hair Transplant Cost, Hair Loss Treatments, Hair Loss Doctors | Parsley-Waldman Hair Center, Louisville, Lexington, Nashville, Knoxville, Cincinnati, Indianapolis, Chicago, St. Lo Dr. Michael Meshkin - Dr. Michael Meshkin*Hair Transplant Surgeon in*Newport Beach,*California Dr Robert H True - Hair Clinic New York, New Jersey, Boston Dr Bradley Limmer - Bradley Limmer, MD*Hair Transplant Surgeon in*San Antonio,*Texas Dr Sharon Keene - Sharon Keene, MD*Hair Transplant Surgeon in*Tucson,*Arizona I have added a screenshot here with the photo from ukhairtransplantclinics.co.uk on the left and on the right you will have the original photos from Dr Robert H. True (Hair Clinic New York, New Jersey, Boston) I am sure that him the rest of the doctors will see this and take action against this scam clinic. Here is a bit more about the consultation: It was all about me loosing the change of a good price if I didn’t act quickly, here are a few phrases from the email: “Because there are now only a few surgery dates available for the promotion Please call me on 0800 043 0993 if you have any further questions or would like to arrange your treatment.” “In order to qualify for the above promotional savings the following would usually be necessary: 1) Make a surgery booking within 7 days of this letter “ At the consultation you indicated that it would not be possible for you to be treated in the promotional period, I have now spoken to our manager, who has agreed to hold the price until the above date, as long as you pay a deposit, in the next 7 days. Believe me in person its worse than this! I wanted to share this with the rest of you to make sure you don’t waste your time going to these consultations and even more importantly don’t get ripped off by paying anything to this company.
  10. Dear all, Just reaching out to the forum members one more time to see if anyone had a procedure with Dr. William Lindsey recently. Thank you and regards,
  11. I've posted a bunch of videos discussing the 2 options to lower female hairlines. Well 3 actually...doing nothing is the easiest and cheapest option and frankly, in the US...MOST caucasion women have naturally higher hairlines. Having now done 4000 facelifts...that is a fact of our population. So the 2 options are...1. Reverse browlift which immediately lowers the hairline about an inch or so. Its pretty quick, taking us about 45 minutes in the office with oral sedation. And usually, the scar is minimal. 2. Hair transplantation which takes a year to grow in and can be designed to fit the patient's goals of a hairline. And frankly half of the #1 patients we see....end up doing a small hair transplant a year or 2 later...women have hair greed too! We have another patient like this next week who did several videos on reverse browlift for me. Anyhow, here is a hair restoration and at a year...I thought she looked a little thin in 2 or 3 areas so we did a little touchup and we were glad we did. With that very fair skin and very dark hair...no matter how tightly the hair is placed...its just not as much as is needed due to the color mismatch. The video is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eJSQIF3xxyg Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
  12. This is a 1 year update on our young lady who had a right eyebrow scar that we repaired with eyebrow hair transplant last spring. She does a short interview and we discuss the difference between eyebrow and scalp hair...so that patients understand the limitation of eyebrow transplants. For some reason, we've gotten maybe 12 calls about eyebrow work since the covid 19 crisis started...more than we get in a year normally, so here's some info to consider as you do your research. The video is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jVMJhIH7oyI Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
  13. In this short video I show our patient from 8 years ago, previously posted a few years back after another ski trip. She lives in Utah and I did a frontal case on her, and subsequently her aunt (also posted). She was the only taker in the ski challenge of 2020....possibly due to coronavirus shutting down snowbird the day we had the contest. Anyhow, she has an unremarkable hairline at 8 years. THAT is what we strive for. Unremarkable. It calls no attention to itself and nobody would ever guess she had anything done. The video is: Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
  14. @Melvin-Moderator @Dr. Suhail Khokhar If you are aware of Dr. William Wrassman you might want to check out this blog post by him on Topical Finasteride - https://newhair.com/baldingblog/the-use-of-topical-finasteride-with-minoxidil-produces-remarkable-results-in-a-study-on-300-male-patients-with-genetic-balding/ tl;dr - Dr. Wrassman attended a presentation by italian doctor Chiara Insalaco and the results were remarkable enough to convince Dr. Wrassman to start prescribing topical fin to his patients.
  15. Thank you Melvin! It's my understanding that he predominately performs FUT than FUE even though the clinic website mentions both. Makes it difficult for someone like me to reach a decision when a surgeon claims to be performing both. I would greatly appreciate comments from anyone on this forum who has done a procedure with Dr. Lindsey in 2019. Regards,
  16. Scalp micropigmentation or SMP (the process of tattooing the scalp to promote an appearance of naturally growing hair) is becoming an increasingly popular procedure for balding men, especially those who’d like to maintain a closely cropped head of hair with an appearance of stubble. This intriguing procedure is frequently used to camouflage widened scars from previous hair transplant strip procedures. However, some hair transplant surgeons have begun utilizing this procedure to aid in thickening the appearance of naturally thinning or transplanted hair. But is scalp micropigmentation for everyone? What are the benefits, limitations and practical usage of this procedure? Is scalp micropigmentation a viable alternative to hair transplant surgery? Scalp micropigmentation isn't a new procedure, but due to its increase in popularity, some hair restoration physicians have begun to investigate and even incorporate it into their practice as an adjunct to today's state of the art hair transplant surgery. For more information, you are encouraged to read some of the articles below: Scalp Micropigmentation - A Viable Alternative to Hair Transplant Surgery? Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) to Conceal Hair Transplant Donor Scar: Is It Permanent and Undetectable? The Advantages and Disadvantages of Hair Restoration Through Scalp Micropigmentation Dr. William Rassman now Offering Scalp Micro-Pigmentation (SMP) at his Los Angeles Office Use this forum to discuss scalp micropigmentation, its advantages and disadvantages and share your results. Best wishes, Bill
  17. This fellow popped in just before the covid shutdown. He has grown in fantastic and now that his sun bleached hair is darker...I agree with him that we probably ought to think about lowering his hairline a bit. But watch the video...when he is in the summer...that wispy tuft is hard to see. The video is: Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
  18. Here's a 5 month update...probaby half growing..on a 1000 graft FUE case. Those curly hairs, and virtually no skin/hair color mismatch already make him look awesome...to the point where our patient is shaving a small partline in. When someone looks this good this early...its really tough to say if they are fast growers, or we put too many hairs in (never heard of that though), or we just got lucky. The video is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=219BFY_gA1k We'll probably get an in person interview this fall, sooner if we can start getting back to pre-covid activities. Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
  19. Here's virtually a 365 day result of 1000 FUEs to address an asymetric hairline in a 30ish year old asian male, with preop, early followup, and 12 months shots and close up views of the hairline and donor area. Thankfully he had thicker, more resilient, hair allowing easy extraction with minimal root trauma. The video is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8_vC-hSxAl8 We have a virtual twin of this fellow at 6 months, also growing well, and expect a video of him this fall. Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
  20. In this brief video we show how....with proper planning and by growing surrounding hair longer....that a class 4 or 5 patient can get 3000 grafts and at a week, conceal all evidence of the procedure. Now I realize some guys just can't grow the surrounding hair and comb it over, and some (like me) have really wirey hair that simply WON'T comb over...but certainly 40% of our bigger case patients can pull this off. Trouble is, that despite us telling them this at the preop meeting, about half of guys get a nice haircut to "help me out"...then they can't conceal the case. Our philosophy is always come with as long of hair as you can...it gives us and you the most options. You can cut hair in 10 minutes when you want, but it takes a month to grow a half inch. The video is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tnWweK_vTL0&feature=youtu.be Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
  21. Scarring is heavily dependent on three things. Surgical skill, how you treat the scar post-operatively, and how well you scar physiologically. The first two you can control to an extent, but the third is unknown. Some surgeons like Dr. Bloxham and Dr. Lindsey perform something called mFUE, it is essentially a small circular strip that they suture up afterward. You may want to consult with them and see what they say about performing a small sample mFUE.
  22. One of our favorite repair patients stopped by for an unrelated issue recently. He did a short interview, now 6 years out from us repairing 2 unsuccessful strip cases by a fellow who just dabbles in hair. I've preached for years that while hair looks like easy surgery...unless you do a lot of them....you simply don't have the little extra attention to detail in multiple areas...cutting, designing, placing etc...that separates consistent hair restoration from most of what is available out there. I know...as I've admitted many times...I USED to dabble in hair in the 90s....and only after I made the decision to go big or go home...did I get good. Lots of doctors never make that decision....and with the rent a techs and machines...its only getting worse for the uneducated consumer. Our video showing the flipping of virgin heads and repair cases...which last year was something like 27 virgin heads and 113 repair cases...illustrates that point. So take a look at our guy...I don't particularly care for the curve into the temples that the first doc did...but its what we had to work with and looks reasonably unremarkable. I point it out in the video which is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DC51k4mHY98 Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
  23. Here is a younger asian fellow that had an asymetric hairline. We just did 1000 FUE's and show his case and donor and recipient sites up close at 6 weeks. Some of you may find him familiar. He is virtually identical to a guy who is now just a year out. We shot this video about 2 weeks ago and the 1 year guy showed up for pics a day or so later. Now that elective surgeries are on hold due to covid...Wendy and I'll catch up on video production and will post the grown out case soon. It's really uncanny how similar these 2 cases were and I'd expect this guy's hairline to look awesome next year. The video is: Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
  24. Some of you all may recall previous videos with this guy, who'd had 2 or 3 non productive surgeries elsewhere, came to me and got a case done...then got hit by a landing airplane! I visited him in St Barths last month and interview him where he got hit. Watch a plane land and almost get another guy! The video is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XMj_4DKuhi0 There is really no hair transplant info in this video except...Don't get hit by an airplane postop! Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
