Advice for Hair Loss Sufferers Considering Hair Transplant Surgery

  1. Some of you guys may recall our scientist, who had 2 failed FUE attempts at eyebrow transplantation elsewhere. Now given her ethnic background...her donor hair roots are awesome..so my guess is they simply missed the angle and transplanted hairs without viable roots. We excised a tiny ellipse and got around 120 singles and placed them. I put up her early results back in the spring and she flew in at just over a year. She looks great. 2. Some of you guys may recall this guy's orginal post about 6 months ago. Essentially he had a couple thousand FUE case by a reputable doctor and had very little growth. Or maybe no growth. Inspecting his donor area showed no donor depletion and scars with hair coming out...probably indicating the transplantation of hairs with no viable roots. We see this each and every week here in DC. So we did a strip repair and he's just starting to grow. Pay attention to his 1.2mm scar, easily hidden by his military haircut and the fact that its actually working this time. The video is: Hopefully we'll get him in next summer for a video and maybe work back toward the crown. Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
  3. In this extended interview with Alex, now a nurse, we delve into his initial journey to Mexico for a bad result low hairline, wide scar strip case that we repaired in 2012 with FUE. Listen to his journal of trying to find a bargain, getting repaired...and then spending years trying to laser off the low plugs put in and micro-needle the cobblestoning from those same plugs. What a journey. It had been several yaers since we saw Alex and he'd brought his mom in for a procedure and Wendy was able to get him to give us this patient perspective. Around 10 minutes in he reviews some of the high points in Spanish. The video is: Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
  4. Hello everyone. I have been meaning to make this thread but have honestly been both busy and lazy. I have been scouring this website for a few months now and have been checking out a lot of peoples progress and completed work. I am glad this exists and want to share my current experience with the community. I am 34 years old and had a FUE done in Las Gatos, California (near San Francisco) by Dr. John Diep on May 23rd, 2018 to the frontal 1/3rd of my head. I began noticing my hair loss slowly when I was 27 years old. I started receding slowly and then the crown started going fast. I used minoxidil from 2011 to 2013 but I kept losing hair but not as quickly as before. I got tired of it and stopped. I started randomly searching on youtube about hairloss solutions and disguises and that eventually lead me to toppik. I started using toppik to cover my crown and i was okay with it. Then when my hairline started disappearing, I would start adding toppik there. It was good for some time and then the hairloss was too drastic. I now started noticing people looking at my hairline when they were talking to me and I felt like they knew something was up. It looked clumpy instead of like real hair strands. So then I began buzzing my hair with a 2 guard and developed a light sprinkle technique to give the illusion that I had a full head of hair with the buzz cut. I eventually got tired of it because like all of you know, it became a daily worry with all of environmental elements and with people wanting to run their hands on the buzz cut. I also got tired of always wearing hats when I didn't have the toppik on my head. I then started doing some serious research for the last 4 years before I actually pulled the trigger. I was choosing between Dr. Lindsey (he is 45 minutes from me in Virginia), Dr. Feriduni ( in Belgium), Dr. Koray Erdogan (Turkey) and Dr. Diep. I ended up choosing Dr. Diep mainly because of his amazing fue hairlines and for that fact that he is in the US. I am not going to type a write up about the day of the procedure because its exactly like what most people have described in their Diep threads. I will say that everything went well and I was pretty much knocked out for 10 hours minus lunch. I was initially told that he would be able to get 2,500 grafts but he ended up extracting 2,381. He was going to do some temple work but since he didn't get the 2,500 grafts, he ended up not doing it. I didn't know this until after the procedure but that makes sense since I was pretty sedated. I also opted to get the A-cell done. I am currently at 6 months and am a bit nervous with the progress (I know this the time where everyone tends to get anxious according to the forums). I know I am a slow grower on the top of my head because I was the same way when I had a full head of hair. There is definitely significant improvement of my hair line, its actually quite dramatic. My only issue is that I don't see a lot of density and I see a lot of big spaces where grafts initially seemed to be placed. I am not going to freak out or anything until after 1 year. I have read on this forum that some people saw a lot of new growth at around 9 months and on. I know the hair also begins thickens up then so I'll just wait and see and post monthly progress pictures. Side note, I know I am going to need 1 or 2 more HTs for full coverage on the rest of my head. I am not on any medication other than daily biotin. I wanted to get yalls opinion on Propecia and your honest blunt opinions about my progress so far. Thanks a lot and I am excited to be a contributor to this forum and of course experience my progress and results with yall. Top 3 pictures are pre op Top 4 pictures are 2 hours post op 1 day post op after a cleaning at his office 3 days post op and my face is swollen 9 days post op with scabbing 10 days post op 12 days post op. All the scabs have fallen. 6 months. Pictures taken this morning. I was buzzing my hair until the first week of October. This is my hair growth since then, about 6 weeks. I am not cutting my hair until the year mark. Hair at 18 Hair at 22 Hair at 28. You can see the front receding.
  5. This younger Indian fellow had autoextracted his temple hair and lost the front triangles. He rolled in at 2 years and looks great..did a nice 5 minute interview...then just as we were posting this, said his girlfriend didn't want him to be video'd....so we snipped it out but his pics are great. Take a look. Particularly his left temple was so natural I'd completely forgotten we did anything there...and typically that is a tougher area to get to look really natural due to the caliber and angle of the hairs. Dr. Lindsey patient cleaning nuances

o I realize that this may not apply to guys/girls getting work done elsewhere...always follow the instructions YOUR doctor gives you regarding how to take care of your hair tranplant. BUT, if you go back over the years of my posts, you'll see lots of discussion on cleaning. I always knew cleaning of scabs and debris was important, but somewhere around 2011 I had a great 3000 graft completely bald (preop) lawyer who allowed such thick crusts to form that by day 7, he had "autoextracted" essentially rows of grafts that looked like bald rivers.... We later did a 2nd planned case and addressed the "rivers" at the same time and have several videos showing his progress and results....I'm quite proud of his final result, now about 4 or 5 years out. That confirmed my theory that what happens is on one hand you have hair grafts being revascularized and getting anchored into the recipient scalp...which gets more attached daily... And on the other hand you can get all this thick scabby goo that once solidified...actually has greater tensile strength to other grafts than the grafts do to the scalp....so when a few start to get pulled, you autoextract a river of hair grafts. I've photodocumented this a few times and now have done lots of cleaning lectures and videos. NEVERTHELESS, it seems really rich guys, and doctors and lawyers...never want to clean like I want them to. And frequent readers of my blogs or visitors to my office know that we'll help you clean daily for no extra cost. WE JUST WANT IT TO WORK! So I was particularly enthused when this high powered lawyer, who refused to come for us to help him clean...did a great job. And he's related to one of my favorite professors in my residency. Take a look and if you are one of our patients....do this. Otherwise do what your own doctor says. The video is : Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
  7. For years I've told people that for MOST well nourished male patients....to address hairloss you can 1. Do nothing 2. Wear a wig 3. Use meds (rogaine or propecia or avadart) 4. Do surgery. And for years I've seen hundreds of people a year crying over the money that they have wasted on all kinds of nonsense. In particular I've seen gobs of men and women who have paid medium or large amounts of money to clinics, doctors, spas...to buy laser treatments which have done nothing for the patient except waste time and lower their bank account. An article in this months Derm Surg gives a pretty soft call on if lasers help...concluding with the word MIGHT in the summary. Having published 29 articles in peer reviewed journals, by and large...if something shows promise, the researcher uses a variation of the phrase : encouraging and warrents further evaluation RATHER than might. So before you spend more money on things that might or might not work...do your research and see if it is worth your hard earned money. It may well be working for some folks...I've just not yet seen one come in the office with any results they attribute to a laser. And if the doctor is trying to sell it to you, maybe ask about studies like this. The video discussion is: Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
  8. Hi guys, I wanted to make a new topic to highlight the incredible work Dr. Lindsey is doing. He is an absolute stellar surgeon who Ive had an FUE sessions with myself and he is in my experienced opinion one of the most ethical straight talking Drs around. Many of you regular readers will know what a good guy he is as he dedicates a great deal of time to the forums helping educate readers by answering questions and posting results along with informative videos. Only the other day it was highlighted yet again to me what a great stand out Dr he is as he had a patient in his office quite literally pleading with him to perform surgery due to the patients anxiety surrounding his hair loss. This patient had been told by 3 other local clinics that they would all gladly perform a 2000+ FUT session on him. Dr Lindsey categorically turned him down and spent an hour with him talking him down and explained in depth to the patient he was not a candidate and why. (The patient has very minimal loss and is only 21 years old! ) This is just one example of what a gentleman he is and why I'm proud to represent and work for him and in turn help him gain the exposure he deserves as he puts the patient first. If anyone reading is interesting in gaining a very accurate and honest appraisal by Dr William Lindsey of their hair loss and hair transplant requirements then feel free to reach out to me to me via email anytime : support@spexhair.com Even if you do not use Dr Lindsey for your session i highly recommend you use him as a bench mark as to how you should be treated and looked after for your session. 9. Some of you guys will recall Ed. He's our guy from out of state who had had (I keep forgetting this as he was really really bald and had had already 2 transplants by a national company before he got to me) previous work. We did a good case on him and 3 or 4 months out he got hit by an airplane landing at St Barts. We've done a few videos on him, one has ****pit video as he knew the pilot that hit him. Anyhow, I guess he's the first guy to get hit and live, although it degloved his scalp and removed a fair amount of his transplant. We did another 2 little cases on him and patched this up. He came in a few weeks ago and we did a likely final small case...all of these after our first case have been small as he is at least a class 7 AND he'd had 2 little cases before our medium sized case.So as I've posted in a bunch of videos...REALLY bald guys with limited hair either should do nothing surgically, OR they should frame the face and then work back but not spread things around. Roughly 50% of prospective patients that I show results like this to say its horrible...if one can't cover everything why do anything? And the other 50% love it. We do no "selling" and leave it completely up to the patient as these are really quite tough problems.HOPEFULLY Ed will spin by DC in a year or so and do a final video. His most recent case is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k_7p4NE5XAY And older videos are: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vpBPFPsmIW0&t=6s Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
  10. In our latest ISHRS suggested video on black market hair restoration....we point out 3 common scams that could EASILY be prevented...if the patient would have just done a little research before handing over money to a sales consultant. With forums like this, and youtube...there really is no reason you can't see at least a handful of results by the doctor you are considering. If you don't see their work online...why? Is it because they don't post? Or they don't have results to post? Or they just bought a machine to do the surgery and they really haven't tried it out yet (we heard that one yesterday from a patient's mom....) So educate yourself and look at results and talk to a doctor, not a commissioned salesman...before you sign up. That is not a guarantee of success or happiness, but it is a great first few steps on the road. The video is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-7urg2y74xc Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
  11. This guy is one of the tougher guys we've worked with. Not only is he a machine when it comes to tough guy stuff, but he's a pleasant fellow and he likes classic rock...so much in fact I lost a big bet to him during his first surgery. Results with short hair are really tests of the entire hair transplant team. The finer hair grafts can't be killed or damaged as there really is no "layering" buffer. AND the donor scar is a concern. Frankly he looks better in person and I'm a consistently inconsistent photographer...but he tells you his thoughts in the short interview. The video is: Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
  12. Here's a young guy we talk with about 10 months out from his frontal case. Although not completely grown in, he looks great and will only improve over the next 3 months. He keeps a short haircut and we show his scar up close. The video is: Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
  13. I've posted lots of younger guy's cases and a number of videos discussing how I think its key to avoid stupid decision making in hair restoration...especially younger guys who are "sold" a case that is not appropriate for them. Specifically, we encourage parents to come with the younger patients, always do a mature hairline...even if its not what all the young guy's young friends have...and we plan for future work down the road. Too many times a week I see a kid who has either a goofy low sparse hairline and is balding behind it and will never look natural, or a kid who really needed nothing yet...but had a surgery just to "prevent" balding.Do your research! This video is a 23 year old who is 6 months out. He looks to be growing at about the average pace...but it is still somewhat sparse. Guys recognize you will go through a period like this. And so that you can actually see what it looks like at 6 months with fine hair...watch our patient. Just this morning I saw a guy who was told by a doctor's salesperson...right in our area...that he'd be really growing well by his wedding in 5 months. I sadly said he should have started 7 months earlier but he should not do a case this close to his wedding. I suspect he's still going to proceed with the other doctor as they apparently sounded pretty convincing. Remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.The video is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qu6lE4BFOlg And he almost certainly will be in for a followup in 6 months.Dr. LindseyMcLean VA
  14. This guy walked in a few weeks ago and I'd completely forgotten he'd had work done at a big hair chain in the early 2000's. When you see his preop with us, you might wonder...like I did...did they do anything? Anyhow, he and I had both lost track of time. Instead of just 2 years out, he's nearly 6. And like a lot of guys he's his own worst critic. At some point I suspect we'll put a few more hairs where he's thinned but there is certainly no rush to do that. The video is: Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
  15. In our experience...virtually every single patient who had experiences like described in this video...who had their surgery in the US...the prospective patient rarely met the doctor who was going to do the surgery, never saw a result of a similar type of head that they had, and at best saw one or 2 professionally done advertisements...not patient interview videos or forum posts... While I have used this analogy and gotten grief from forum audiences before...I do think its valid. If you are buying a car...more than likely you look at several magazines and consumer oriented forums, and you actually go sit in the car and probably ask someone other than the salesman what kind of issues, good or bad, they've had with that car before you purchase. It's not hard, probably takes an hour or 2. Just do at least that amount of research before you let someone sell you a hair transplant! The video is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u6q04DIw3Xg Dr. Lindsey
  16. Here's a nice fellow who had a low yield strip case on the west coast. In addition to not getting much hair...he did get a noticable scar. I attempted to get him to let us cut out his scar and get some hair...but his boss, or wife, said just cut the scar out. We did this and got about 50% improvement...which, if you've seen my scar videos...is about what we average on scar excision and trichophytic closures. Sometimes we get 90% out and sometimes we don't get any improvement at all, but on average I get about 50% improvement. Since he has to wear a really tight hairstyle, he needed a bit more camouflage to that linear scar, so we did a few hundred FUE's. ALL that really does is keep the viewer's eyes from seeing a straight white line. He looks good, and is currently overseas so I hope to get 18 month followups in 2019. The video is : Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
  17. Here's a younger guy that popped in 2 weeks ago, now 14 months out from frontal triangles and a little across the front. Wendy and I discuss his case, and our tips for younger patients. Any patient can use our conservative advice, but particularly younger guys, who may be panicking with the first hair falling out....we try to keep you from doing and impulse buy of a hair transplant. There is never a rush. Do your research, ask your family. AND don't pick a low goofy hairline that won't age well. LASTLY plan for the future. It may be worth waiting til hair loss is worse, or at least acknowledging that you'll need more surgery in the future. The video is: Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
  18. Here's an interesting guy who got a nice frontal "u" by us last winter. In addition to reviewing his case, Wendy tells you some of her thoughts on density of hair placement and factors that make transplants look more or less dense at the end of the case. The video is: Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
  19. Take a look at Geoffrey, now a year and a week out. Some of you guys may recall his 8 month video. As expected...he has some hair greed and despite having gobs of hair...he's thinking about another one. Hopefully I've discouraged that for a while as he looks fantastic. The video is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BwMeyuf2M_o Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
  20. Some of you no doubt will see "young guy" and "crown" and start to wondering... and then throw my name in and really wonder why we did this. Well...I've posted for years that the crown is a black hole, sucking up all available grafts...and in particular, I suggest it be a concern addressed in older guys...who KNOW they are not losing all that hair up front. I still stand by that. This guy has a bit of a unique story though. I'd seen him for a few years, he's on meds, has a mixed hair loss potential due to family variations....and his mother is a physician who I BELIEVE, fully understands that her son will likely need future work. And I believe he understands it too.... So we did a smaller crown case of about 1800 grafts to give good...not excellent--coverage of his crown, saving hair for future use up front. He's delighted with the result and is moving out of the area. His mom is still local so hopefully we'll see him at some point, whether he needs more work or not. To summarize...I still am conservative on crown work in younger guys and ALWAYS think the front is where the priority should remain. He's got dense donor region and I think we have obided by the philosophy of "Do no harm" while still giving him a good result and increased confidence. Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
  21. My partner had a brow lift last year that left him with three noticeable linear scars in his scalp that prevents him from cutting his hair short. He was looking to have this repaired with a FUE procedure, I'm assuming 200 grafts would suffice. Is anyone aware of FUE surgeons that perform small sessions, preferably on the west coast? The only ones I've come across are Dr. Lindsey and Dr. Feller, but that's quite a distance to travel. I had a very successfully surgery with Dr. Diep a few years ago, but he currently has an 8 month wait time for FUE and $5k minimum.
  22. This is a quick video showing a guy about 50 years old with very white skin, dark hair, fine hair who got 2700 up front with us 13 months ago. I was all set to do round 2 and finish that crown off...but he looks great. Actually way better than the video would show but due to his job...I was very restricted in his picture taking. In any case, this is pretty typical at 13 months to have a good small scar, shown in the video, and nice framing of the face depsite the color contrast mentioned above. The video is: Dr. Lindsey McLean VA http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4F4gLNcHmMI
  23. Here we discuss a man who has had scalp surgery, not hair related, but who was left with 1/4 inch wide scars on each side. Options for repair include FUE into the scar or scar excision. In the video which is GRAPHIC...we discuss these and show a full scar excsion, trichophytic closure, and day 6 view after the sutures came out. Dr. Lindsey McLean VA The video is:
  24. This medical doctor with very fine thin hair and fair skin, is 2 years out from his first case and around a year out from the 2nd in the back, which is still growing in. He was kind enough to say a few words about his experience and frankly I was shocked his mother didn't know he had anything done. Take a look. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NGI0uYGeK9A Dr. Lindsey McLean VA http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NGI0uYGeK9A
  25. It's beach time again and I'm pleased to see folks at the Jersey shore in Avalon on either Aug 12 or 14. Interested parties should just call the office and we'll set it up. Most years I end up seeing 10 folks and taking a couple of postop patients in the area out for a pizza. So if you want to schedule a visit or if you're waiting on your postop pizza...please call the office. Thanks Dr. L and wear sunscreen. 703 356 3260
