  1. In honor of all the military guys we work with...and its a lot, here are 2 cases, the first is a guy who had a hair case elsewhere and wants it repaired, made less pluggy and who needs a decent strip scar to be concealed by very short hair. His case is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c46ZBSvIrNw&feature=youtu.be The second...is the same case, also on a military fellow, now 15 or so months out, showing his scar by me...hard to see..and his old plug scars...easier to see. We cut out a bunch of those during his case, and who knows...but we may see him again down the road. His video is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xd9R8fOufH4&feature=youtu.be And just yesterday we had an air force guy for repair of a failed FUE elsewhere, an army guy for his 6 week scar check after his repair...and a navy guy in for a one year check after his repair case. All at 7am. Happy memorial day. Dr. Lindsey
  2. This public figure had a low yield hair transplant at a chain operation a few years ago. We packed his recipient area last summer and he stopped by for an unrelated issue at 9 months and is growing nicely. He'll look even better this fall but is already happy and said that after the case he took a few weeks and drove around the midwest and when he returned, he didn't tell his staff, and he keeps getting complements on he's looking younger. The video is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Yh4CB4l9i8&feature=youtu.be He's often local, so hopefully we'll get him in late this year for a final video. Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
  3. Steve wanted us to show his face in our videos...so here goes. He's a younger landscaper..completely buying in to my explanation of how hair transplantation is like fancy tree planting. Anyhow, we go through his operation and first week. At the end of the video Wendy and I talk about how he missed his scar check. He did resurface and did a nice video...but I can't figure out how to splice it into this video, so it will be put up in the next week or so. The video is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N2iy2AUIlfA&feature=youtu.be Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
  4. This fellow is a friend of the practice and had FUE about 6 years ago. Now he has fine hairs and has a decent FUE result. Had he had donor hair as thick as his beard hairs....we'd have hit a grand slam home run. I suspect at some point we'll be doing another case to add in behind his transplant where he's thinned a bit...and of course we'll add some grafts to his hairline. FUE simply doesn't grow as well as strip due to root avulsion stress which I've discussed in 50 videos or so. But John is happy and probably more importantly, so is his girlfriend. The video is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Wg3OL9zN2A&feature=youtu.be Dr Lindsey McLean VA
  5. Ok people. I've been off the forums for a few weeks giving a few talks in Europe and seeing a couple of our German patients in Frankfurt. But here we go. Francis is 2 years out from us doing a feminizing hairline after transgender surgery and a very aggressive browlift elsewhere. She lives in our area but is off travelling and sent these new pics to Wendy. Hopefully we can do an interview this summer. There are 2 or 3 older videos showing the surgery and 9 month results posted on all these forums and my youtube site. The video is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mYk86RkKeYU&feature=youtu.be Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
  6. Mr. R WAS a healthy very active guy working out 5 or 6 days a week vigorously. He had an uneventful hair transplant with us in late October, came back for his scar check at a month, and like most of our patients....we didn't hear from him for a while. At his 6 month mark, he called and told us he'd DROPPED DEAD on the treadmill while exercising in Februrary. Fortunately, the gym is beside both my daughter's school and the rescue squad...which rushed him to the hospital after the manager had started CPR. He had heart surgery...and describes going into the hospital with no hair and being discharged with a crop of hair growing. We do NOT recommend this to start your transplant growing.... He gives a pretty good story and is back training pretty hard and I expect to have a better video this fall. The video is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eGDA-WNd_JA&feature=youtu.be Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
  7. Ok guys, listen to Steven...first off he has a mop of hair. Some courtesy of a few FUE cases by me, but mostly from his GENES! Here he is 77 months after I first operated on him and he's signed up for a little tweak of the hairline and partline in a month or so. He does however give excellent advice on hair loss and hair transplantation. Even seasoned veterans would be wise to hear his 2 cents on the life long progressive nature of hairloss. And that is despite meds and surgery. The video is: Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
  8. Guys I'm giving the keynote lecture at a medical meeting in Paris next Friday and am meeting a few patients we've done from Germany in Heidelberg before that. If anyone wants a quick consultation either call the office and Wendy can sort it out, or email me. I think I'll have email while travelling, but Wendy knows how to track me down. drwlindsey@gmail.com Dr. Lindsey
  9. One of our older UK patients sent pics a few weeks ago so Wendy and I review his case, and see that he's holding up well. For you newbies...his 3 day postop pic is horrendous. Not that common..but certainly what happens if you sleep flat postop and drink a lot of fluids and consume salt. That swelling was gone by day 7 but is a useful motivator to show people why they ought to sleep upright for a few days. The video is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tI462txgNTw&feature=youtu.be Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
  10. In this video we discuss with our patient, his low yield case elsewhere, his repair with us, his poor cleaning after our first case, we show his second case and his excellent cleaning and we interview him and his wife. Newbies may learn how to avoid a few of the classic hair transplant mistakes. The video is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5FjP1N2OT7c&feature=youtu.be Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
  11. In this video we explain the nuances of hair transplants for fixing patchy beards. We have a few other videos showing the same technique on eyebrows and mustaches and scars on the whiskered portion of the face. In addition to beards having really THICK hair...much thicker than usual scalp hairs...the hairs are all single hairs and they emerge from the skin very flat, particularly along the cheek. The chin is an exception. So take a look at how we do this on a younger fellow with some sparse beard areas. The video is: Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
  12. Here's a short video with an interview of a recent eyebrow transplant. As I uploaded the video...I see demo mode on the video...no idea what happened and the folks at our software vendor are slow to respond.... I'm sure a young IT person will know why its there but all that has happened was a power outage during editing.... Anyhow, the young lady looks good and did great cleaning. Take a look. Dr. Lindsey
  13. In this video we review 2 class 6 guys. One is done...had two cases and a nice result. The other is at 6 months out from case 1. Both have very similar heads, hair texture, and likely will turn out similarly. The video is: Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
  14. We just took our medical doctor patient's sutures out. He did a really nice job cleaning and wanted to share advice both on cleaning and his previous work. All you seasoned forum members may find this boring, but I'd encourage newbies to view this and add it to the armamentarium of information they are gathering as they plan their hair options. The video is: Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
  15. Last night’s post put me in a reflective mood and I have a few additional thoughts about thinning, transplants and length. I didn’t talk about hair length in Dr. Lindsey’s video and I don’t want anyone thinking hair loss and long hair go together. They do not. My hair hasn’t been this long since 2001 and it isn’t going to stay this way. I grew it out to cover my FUE donor and recipient areas (all my surgical work is in and around my hairline). I did this with each of my four procedures and recommend it to those who want to keep their business private. As far as I know, nobody knows about my work aside from a handful of close friends and family. Advertising hair loss and your treatments focuses attention behind the curtain, where it doesn't belong. It’s much easier to find Waldo when you know where to look. On that note, I currently blow dry my hair and basically have long bangs. I generally wear a hat as much as possible during this “ugly duckling” recovery phase, but I can and do go hatless when necessary. A little planning is all it takes. That said, I normally keep my hair short and neat. To repeat that old line, hair restoration involves a lot of visual trickery. Short hair and low scalp contrast conceal thinning and loss. Indeed, dying my transplanted hair to reduce scalp contrast is something I’d consider if I wasn’t already going gray. Guys obsessed with looking “young” and dying their hair dark often end up with a shoe polish look that draws attention where it shouldn’t. Older white guys with thinning hair and dark dye jobs universally look terrible. That’s not a look you see in nature, which is generally the best measure of any treatment. SMP, which I’ve never had, can contribute to the contrast illusion from the scalp angle. Combined with very short hair, FUE and a nicely shaped head, SMP results can impress. But all density illusions break down with length, and if I had a nicely shaped head I’d just shave it off and call it a day. There are more important things in life than hair, but it didn’t feel that way to my 17 year old self, who committed to this endless fight. My shaved head looks like a still-lumpy proto-planet that's full of impact craters, however, and I don't regret my choices. To conclude on a positive note, I haven’t been excited about my hair since the mid-1990s, when I first noticed fallen strands in the pages of my high school textbooks. But I’m genuinely excited about going gray and getting older. Hair loss in your 30s and 40s is commonplace. Only now do people ask how I kept my hair when all my people went bald. There's still a 17-year-old kid in the back of my head who chuckles each time this happens. I’m entering new and uncharted territory as I close in on 40: no man in my extended family—to paraphrase an Irish saying—has ever combed gray hair.
  16. Ok guys, here's a 63 year old professional who essentially got scammed for 15 years by unscrupulous hair doctors. The only thing that actually worked for him was his first set of plugs back in the late 80s from a guy who did great plug work...wait...did I really say that????, and who quit before minigrafts and later strip took over. Unfortunately our patient then went to several different doctors along the east coast for a second set of plugs..supposedly cut into minis and micros...then he had 2 or maybe even 3 strip cases. Looks like all he got from that was a smaller bank account and a bunch of scar tissue on the back of his head. Anyhow, he shopped with us for 5 years before we did a 1600 or so strip case, excising a bunch of his plug scars, last summer. He rolled in a week a go and surprisingly...yes surprisingly at 6.5 months, already is growing. I think we'll get final pics next Christmas but watch this and you get the idea of his, and so many other guys' plight...and what can be done. The video is: Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
  17. Dr. Lindsey, Great video. The patient looks excellent too. Nice work.
  18. I'm the dude in the video. I intended to chime in earlier, but my (healthy) aversion to hair loss forums kept me away. More on that in a moment. First of all, a big thanks to Dr. Lindsey and his staff, especially Wendy. This was my forth transplant with Dr. Lindsey, which says all you need to know. Donor hair is a limited resource and hair loss is a never-ending battle. Pick your surgeons carefully. I’m almost 39 and started losing my hair at 17. Every male in my bloodline, going back three generations, went NW6 by 30. I started minoxidil at 18, finasteride at 20 and dutasteride at 22 (replacing finasteride). I’ve been taking 0.5 mg of brandname Avodart each morning for the past 17 years. In the early 2000s—when the forums were less foolish and hysterical—people talked about “the big 3.” Minox/Fin/Niz. I took that to heart and never wavered, which is why I still have most of my hair in spite of genetics. In 20 years nothing has changed when it comes to drugs that work. The guys from the early forums who still have hair don’t have it because they ordered unapproved and untested drugs from China on the advice of online bro scientists. DHT-prone follicles are an even more precious resource than donor hair. Don’t mess around. Get on one of the two FDA-approved 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors and stay on it. Forever. While I’ve had four hair transplant procedures, they have all been relatively small FUE sessions—think 500-1000 grafts. I have thin hair and the illusion of density requires tight packing and multiple sessions. Realistically, that’s true of most people and is what you should count on. One and done isn’t reality for most guys and hair loss never stops. Let me say that again: hair loss never ends. The idea of “stabilizing” loss with meds before getting a transplant shouldn’t be confused with stopping loss—meds slow loss in good responders, at best, over a lifetime. And once you’re taken a surgical stand against hair loss, know that there will be more transplants in your future at your current vanity levels. Don’t think hair loss isn’t going to bother you once you’re reached some unspecified age. If hair loss bothers you now to the point where you can’t accept it, hair loss will always bother you. Finally, be careful about spending too much time on these forums. Countless folks lost hair they’ll never recover as a result of the finasteride hysteria that started around 2005. It’s easy to freak out online, quit the things that work and convince yourself your dick is about to break off and tumble down your pant leg. Don’t believe the hype. Take your meds religiously and if you decide to get a transplant, plan it out with the next several decades in mind. Thanks again Dr. Lindsey. I’ll stop by in 6 months or so to catch up.
  19. Ok guys, here's a short video on Steve, who is 5 months and 4 days out from our repair case. Now you seasoned veterans will know that only the beginning of growth is starting. BUT...take a look, you can see we have established a hairline and the forest of mid scalp coverage is there, it just has to grow. He had had SUPPOSEDLY 2500 grafts, which I doubt due to his result and due to his relatively low density donor region, by another practice a few years back. Like most guys who had a poor result someplace, he was really concerned he was going to get scammed again. Fortunately, he had a great attitude, did a good job cleaning, and had an easy case. Now its just waiting. In the video I interview him under poor office lighting, and he already looks better than his preop pics taken in the same light. Then he sprinkled on some fibers, maybe a little too much actually on the crown, but if you saw him in a store, you'd never know. THIS is how lots of guys can pull off a case without a lot of questions from co workers. He's local and I'm sure we'll get a followup in a year. The video is: Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
  20. I'm considering getting a hair transplant surgery soon, and today I went in for a consultation to the nearest recommended hair transplant specialist - Dr. Lindsey. He seemed very knowledgeable, talented and honest about what to expect. During the consultation, I mentioned that I had previously visited Dr. Glenn Charles' office for a consultation, years ago, and Dr. Lindsey replied, "Did you know, he lost his license?..." He said it was something to do with prescribing patients too much or too strong drugs for their pain. I was really surprised to hear this, because my impression of Dr Charles from years ago was that he was also very honest, and ultimately a trustworthy choice. Dr. Lindsey said this was public knowledge. I would also expect this, but after some basic google searches, I can't find anything about this, and Dr. Charles' business seems to be thriving. Does anyone have any information about this? If this is true, then well I guess it is what it is. But if it is not true, then I find it concerning that Dr. Lindsey would attack a peer like that. I'm not really sure what to make of it. Any thoughts on this?
  21. Its that time of year. I'll be at Big Sky Montana this weekend, never skied there before. If anyone wants to have a chat before I attempt Big Couloir on Monday, simply call my office 703 356 3260. And I'll be at Park City doing the usual ski with old patients and meet a few new ones March 8-13. Same deal... And if you are one of my old patients who wants to ski with me and a few others at Snowbird, I'll buy you lunch and a beer. Dr. Lindsey
  22. This younger fellow had a low yield strip case elsewhere. We repaired him and packed the hairline. He came in planning for more hair to the hairline fairly soon, but gosh...I don't see anyplace to put more hair, he's likely to lose significantly more hair due to his family genes, and he looks NORMAL. So hopefully we stopped his hair greed for now and he won't do something with me or anyone else for quite a while. The video is: Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
  23. Take a look at this guy's hairline. First off he had a low yield strip case elsewhere that was a bit too low on his forehead...but once the hairline was put there, he and I just opted to pack it. He looks fantastic and of course...has a bit of hair greed thinking that just a couple more placed here or there would finish him off.... It might finish off his bank account but there is no place to put any more hair on his hairline right now. I told him to spend that money on another ski trip and roll back in in a few years. His video is: Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
  24. Hello everyone. I have been meaning to make this thread but have honestly been both busy and lazy. I have been scouring this website for a few months now and have been checking out a lot of peoples progress and completed work. I am glad this exists and want to share my current experience with the community. I am 34 years old and had a FUE done in Las Gatos, California (near San Francisco) by Dr. John Diep on May 23rd, 2018 to the frontal 1/3rd of my head. I began noticing my hair loss slowly when I was 27 years old. I started receding slowly and then the crown started going fast. I used minoxidil from 2011 to 2013 but I kept losing hair but not as quickly as before. I got tired of it and stopped. I started randomly searching on youtube about hairloss solutions and disguises and that eventually lead me to toppik. I started using toppik to cover my crown and i was okay with it. Then when my hairline started disappearing, I would start adding toppik there. It was good for some time and then the hairloss was too drastic. I now started noticing people looking at my hairline when they were talking to me and I felt like they knew something was up. It looked clumpy instead of like real hair strands. So then I began buzzing my hair with a 2 guard and developed a light sprinkle technique to give the illusion that I had a full head of hair with the buzz cut. I eventually got tired of it because like all of you know, it became a daily worry with all of environmental elements and with people wanting to run their hands on the buzz cut. I also got tired of always wearing hats when I didn't have the toppik on my head. I then started doing some serious research for the last 4 years before I actually pulled the trigger. I was choosing between Dr. Lindsey (he is 45 minutes from me in Virginia), Dr. Feriduni ( in Belgium), Dr. Koray Erdogan (Turkey) and Dr. Diep. I ended up choosing Dr. Diep mainly because of his amazing fue hairlines and for that fact that he is in the US. I am not going to type a write up about the day of the procedure because its exactly like what most people have described in their Diep threads. I will say that everything went well and I was pretty much knocked out for 10 hours minus lunch. I was initially told that he would be able to get 2,500 grafts but he ended up extracting 2,381. He was going to do some temple work but since he didn't get the 2,500 grafts, he ended up not doing it. I didn't know this until after the procedure but that makes sense since I was pretty sedated. I also opted to get the A-cell done. I am currently at 6 months and am a bit nervous with the progress (I know this the time where everyone tends to get anxious according to the forums). I know I am a slow grower on the top of my head because I was the same way when I had a full head of hair. There is definitely significant improvement of my hair line, its actually quite dramatic. My only issue is that I don't see a lot of density and I see a lot of big spaces where grafts initially seemed to be placed. I am not going to freak out or anything until after 1 year. I have read on this forum that some people saw a lot of new growth at around 9 months and on. I know the hair also begins thickens up then so I'll just wait and see and post monthly progress pictures. Side note, I know I am going to need 1 or 2 more HTs for full coverage on the rest of my head. I am not on any medication other than daily biotin. I wanted to get yalls opinion on Propecia and your honest blunt opinions about my progress so far. Thanks a lot and I am excited to be a contributor to this forum and of course experience my progress and results with yall. Top 3 pictures are pre op Top 4 pictures are 2 hours post op 1 day post op after a cleaning at his office 3 days post op and my face is swollen 9 days post op with scabbing 10 days post op 12 days post op. All the scabs have fallen. 6 months. Pictures taken this morning. I was buzzing my hair until the first week of October. This is my hair growth since then, about 6 weeks. I am not cutting my hair until the year mark. Hair at 18 Hair at 22 Hair at 28. You can see the front receding.
  25. Yeah, I am sure DLR did everything he could...and probably back in the 90's when FUE wasn't common. One of those lessons in why FUT is a bad idea mostly...at least IMHO. To me it is kind of safe for guys who probably will never be bald enough where shaving their head makes sense. But then again, why not just go FUE in that case. And the flip side, on NW 6 cases where you need every graft.. Quite honestly, if you are that bad off even a good HT result at 38, you might find at 55 it's just a mess like poor DLR and just realize it's time to buzz it off. Then from behind you are two small circles away from the back of your head looking like a happy face. DLR is only human and probably looked at those pics and realized it needed work and SMP and maybe some fue to fix it. I hope he did. But he will never be able to have a really short buzz and it be un- noticeable in person. Harry, ironic name considering this thread! yeah, he is well past the point where it looks salvageable. In my own hair loss...per the text books. You can loose 50% of your density and not really be noticeable. I disagree with that as I sure noticed. But I agree it is pretty accurate when you phrase it like "obviously thinning to anyone who looks at your hair in any close manner" And where Harry is now, maybe he is at 25% where it is more like you don't see a bald guy, like his brother. But he is one big shedding phase away from crossing a line where it just will look stringy and unhealthy. At that point it will be time to clip it. He of course has the funds to have the best Dr. in the world work on him and probably with his coloring could easily have a no shave FUE. I am sure top surgeons would respect his privacy and do the meticulous work to do a complex FUE like that. He better do it soon if he really want's too...he has that option still. My guess is he will be like his brother in another 7-8 years. Plus he has a decent face for a buzzed head (sorry, William doesn't). My guess is like 80% of men with thinning hair, he doesn't care enough about it to get a HT. I know when I was in my late 30's and happily married to a pretty wife, I hated my thinning hair and did the best I could. But didn't think a whole lot about it and probably would have just buzzed it off an never done a HT. I think your mindset and priorities are just different when you are in that place and if you are confident. If I was still that 30's guy with the pretty wife...I would never have bothered to learn about FUE. But knowing what I know now, if I had known how inexpensive and simple it was to have done...I would have done it. But I wasn't obsessing enough about my hair to even go down that road to learn. My guess is Harry is happy and it's not as big a deal to him. Plus, maybe he is wise and realizes life is long...and he is going to be a lot of bald. So why risk the scaring and public scorn if he probably would end up buzzing it off. It is a pretty wise decision in the big picture of life to not do something short sighted that might give satisfaction short term and more suffering long term. But if I were his friend, I would for sure tell him 3000 FUE grafts done by a world class doctor is for sure worth looking into. And he probably should go for it all things considered. But plenty or reasons not. Actually, I would not be shocked if he were on here if it is bothers him. I am sure 100's of A list male celebrities have found there way onto this forum. And no doubt a few registered users are names we probably have heard as they learn and ask questions in this anonymous manner.
