Advice for Hair Loss Sufferers Considering Hair Transplant Surgery

My Story

  1. Hello! I am a Patient of Dr. Panine and reviewing my personal experience of Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) Hair Transplant. I am twenty-six years old with 3 transitioning to 3A on the hair loss chart (You can see where my hair was at with the first photo of my first consultation) . I started losing my hair around early twenties. As the years went by and my hair loss progressed, I tried to do minoxidil 5% liquid form during the last seven months. Eventually, I came to the realization my hair will never be what it once was, so, I decided to do a Hair Transplant and started researching. I currently live in Chicago, IL and went online to see what my options were. I first decided to understand what a hair transplant is and what kinds of treatments option I have. I found a few people who had alright reviews but after consulting with them about everything I felt they weren't the right person for me to do this with. I am a not a fan of any type of surgery and wanted to make sure I went to someone with the same vision and had a well known reputation. More then a few consultations later, I stumbled on to Dr. Panine. He had great before and afters and not a bad review to be found and I definitely searched pretty well like I did with the others. Everyone said " He was an Artist when it came to hairlines.", "Great job and made sure I was okay the whole time.", "He was their the whole time." etc... I decided to give him a chance and got in contact with his assistant, Stuart. Stuart was very professional and well knowledgeable about everything. You'd think that would be a giving but the other places really missed the mark on that. He told me in detail about everything and proceeded to show me before and after photos, which they were all very realistic and had a great result overall. I met Dr. Panine afterwards and he was very nice guy. He really made sure to talk about what I am looking for and adding his own artistic vision to create a realistic hairline without me going overboard on my idea. He and I came to a compromise and I really like what he had to say and came up with and decided to go with him. I followed the pre op instructions until the day of the procedure and came in to the office at the time scheduled. I met up with one of the assistants there who was also very kind. She gave me the paper work and helped set me up for everything. Stuart took some before photos and talked to me about it all. Dr. Panine came in said hello and proceeded sketched out the line and made sure I was good with the placement. As the surgery began, he made sure to explain everything and really made sure that I was comfortable as possible throughout it all. I also like to mention that he was there the whole time. When I talked to other doctors about this, they said the assistant would be doing a good amount of the work, which made me uncomfortable but made me really happy/apprecaitive with Dr.Panine. Dr.Panine assistants' were great also! Checked up on me a lot and asked me how I was doing. They would put their hand on my arm gently when they had to extractions or do something and it really soothed and made me feel a lot more comforted. They had gotten me a sandwich of my choice, when they took a miniature break and talked to me about what else they had to do. The process took about fifteen hours and I had more then 2,500 grafts. Dr. Panine work every second of the way with his assistants' for hours and they did an amazing job. Stuart did some post op pictures which I posted. The next day, I came back in to check everything as asked, which everything was Great! I am very happy with the results so far. I highly recommended Dr. Panine and have a lot of people excited to see my hair grow. Here are some photos of my head also, three days after and I’ll be continuing the photo progression. Here’s day 5 going onto 6. (11th-12th photo) Ten Day mark (13-16 photo) Thank you for reading this review and hope this will help your decision. Thank you Stuart and Dr.Panine!
  2. Guys, let’s not forget the Dr. Panine has proved himself and is a highly esteemed member of the Coalition. Members are certainly allowed to have their preferences in terms of which doctor they prefer, but Dr. Panine did meet our demanding standards and patience did approve him for membership. Not only that, but let’s not forget that the standard punch size for FUE is between .7 mm and 1.1 mm. There are circumstances where larger punches are needed and required and even though these punches appear larger, they don’t appear any larger than 1.1 mm which some doctors use on a regular basis under certain circumstances. Frankly, the donor wounds have healed very nicely with no signs of scarring so those who have concerns should feel better knowing that his daughter area looks quite good. It’s also proof that large of punches can be used without any problems when appropriate for the patient. I understand everybody’s desire to see smaller and more refinement incisions and punches but sometimes, it’s just not possible and it largely depends on the patient. Remember, the smaller the punch, the more fragile the follicular unit because it will lack the necessary tissue surrounding the follicle that protects it and provides optimal growth yield. So let’s not forget, that larger punches often healed better quality follicles while smaller punches may look nicer after surgery but could jeopardize the quality of the grafts. Don’t get me wrong, obviously under many circumstances, smaller punches can be used quite successfully bought and some patients and in some cases, larger punches are required. The best thing to do here is to focus on the patients progress and results that are still yet to come. I personally feel confident that he will get excellent results. Best wishes, Bill
  3. Both are great surgeons, I’ve been very impressed with Dr. Panine, I don’t think you can go wrong with either.
  4. jj51702- Thanks for the compliment on Dr. Panine's patients results. Dr. Panine uses a motorized hand held machine and the punch size used was .8mm. The patients best quality hair was in the occipital region. The patient is presently on Finasteride 1mg. All the grafts were done in one day. literalno and Triple7 thank for the nice comments.
  5. I have been losing hair since I was 19yrs old and I was on and off minoxidil since I was 24 but at 28yrs I completely stopped minoxidil for 1 yr and it was the worst decision ever. I lost almost all my hair within this 1 yr. I tried to get back on minoxidil and finasteride but it did not help. At age 30, I finally decided that I will do HT. After some research and some consultation with various doctors in Chicago, including Dr.Vladamir Panine, Dr.Allan Purgangao and some doctors in India including Dr.Madhu and Dr.Bhatti. I finally decided to go ahead and fly to India to perform my HT with Dr.Bhatti. Here is my experience with Dr.Bhatti at Darling buds. I reached India on 8th of Oct 2018, Dr.Bhatti had arranged transportation from Delhi airport to Chandigarh. It's a 3hrs ride which was pretty decent even after the long 19hr flight. I was taken directly to the hotel where I slept few hours. At 430pm local time a car was sent to pick me up from the hotel for my consultation with Dr.Bhatti. The consultation was about my hairline design and inspection of my donor area, after which blood sample were taken for necessary investigation. Day of the surgery. I was give antibiotic and sedative injection. I was drowsy very quickly and felt slight pinch at the back of my head at the beginning but soon I fell asleep and did not feel any pain. The surgery was about 7hrs during which a total of 2476 grafts were harvested from the donor area. Single - 328 Double - 1657 Triple - 491 I did not have any pain after the surgery and came back from dressing the donor area early next morning. The healing was pretty good and on the 3rd day my dressing was completely taken off, I never took any pain medication after the surgery. I am pretty pleased with the healing process so far. I have posted pictures taken on the day of the surgery and progression on week 1 , 2, and 3. Dr.Bhatti has prescribed to take finasteride 1mg + 5mg biotin and spray minoxdil 5% for the first 6 months only to promote hair growth. I am taking the medication religiously and hoping for the best outcome.
  6. Dr.Panine also suggested the same approx 2500 grafts for hairline and mid scalp but I went with Dr.Bhatti after going through the positive post in this forum. Do you think the 40 grafts / cm2 wasn't meet? Please let me know your feedback, I am starting to get concerned about the comments related to the gap. Total of 2476 grafts were extracted approx 5000 hairs - for hairline and midscalp.
  7. I am 24 years old, and have been thinning from the age of 20. I have done countless hours of research and have tried every known remedy to man (natural and unnatural) to slow down my hair loss: (LLLT, Minoxidil, Finasteride, Saw Palmetto, Biotin, Hair/Skin/Nails pills, Omega 3's, DHT blocking Shampoos, Dermal Rolling, Diet changes, Snake oil products and all sorts of other oils.) Of course when nothing worked, similar to many men before me, I looked into surgery as an option and spent countless hours researching Dr.'s looking for FUE/Strip, scars, hairline, density, and the most natural looking results. I narrowed it down to three surgeons: I've met Dr. Katona (Restore), Dr. Keller (North Shore Hair Translplant), and finally Dr. Panine with Chicago Hair Transplant Clinic. Each gave me a consultation regarding my situation and explained what I could come to expect. Considering my line of work as a Nurse, I know my Dr. "types." I can tell when a surgeon is all marketing gimmicks or treats their patients like a conveyor belt, and charges more for less results (Restore). Or whether their living in the past, not up to date on more modern/advanced procedures, biased in opinion, stubborn on their own methods (Dr. Keller). Or if they are actually open to their patients INDIVIDUAL situations, goals, and presented with the best options to accomplish them. Dr. Panine was the obvious choice. The choice was as simple as his decades of experience, track record of great results, willingness to update his approach with the times, his Individualistic nature towards his patients, willingness to answer any questions you have, his price point, and of course his artistic ability (which is a HUGE factor that many surgeons lack). I can't explain how happy I am that I made that decision because it's safe to say that surgery was a breeze, his surgical assistants were cute, and I was kept comfortable and relaxed throughout the entire procedure, and there is virtually no scarring. I'm so thankful to Stuart for his support and communication, as he was my go to man when I needed anything or any information regarding pre and post op expectations, and when to come in for followups. But most importantly the thing we are all eagerly looking to get out of our hair transplants... RESULTS. And Dr. Panine Delivered! I'll let the pictures speak for themselves: Pre Op Post Op 7months Post Op Outdoor Lighting Indoor Lighting And stay tuned for my 1 year Post Op results!
  8. Hi Everyone - I am a patient of Dr. Panine and this is my review of my 2,600 graft FUE procedure. Right now I am just about 18 months post op and could not be more thrilled with the results. Initial Consultation For about a year I combed through what seemed like hundreds of pages of internet research on hair loss and hair transplant doctors in the Chicago-land area. I settled on three possible options for my procedure and decided to make an initial consultation with each of them. What I felt set Dr. Panine and his team apart was their commitment to me. Starting with Stuart and all the way through the whole team I always felt like they had my best interests at heart -- and most importantly they listened to me. Dr. Panine and Stuart addressed my questions and concerns and then we got out to building a plan of attack. What also stood out to me was that Dr. Panine never over promised anything. Looking back 18 months later I can honestly say he delivered exactly what he said he would deliver on. The team was very upfront that no one can accurately predict hair loss and gave me some guidance and best practices for after my operation. I really liked this because I felt like I was creating a partnership with them for the long haul, as opposed to just having my procedure and then they'd be done with me. This really helped make my decision to go with Dr. Panine much easier. Pre Op Over communication became a theme throughout this process -- and I was very grateful for that. Stuart and I chatted a few times a week leading up to my procedure and he made sure I had everything I needed and that if I had any questions he was right there to answer them. Day of Op In total my procedure lasted about 12 hours -- but honestly the day flew by. My comfort was paramount to the team that day, they really made me feel welcome. Dr. Panine made sure he explained everything upfront as well as he went along. He allowed me to ask questions, get up and stretch and make sure I always had enough food and water. Having the big screen TV at my disposal was an excellent touch as well! At the end of the day Stuart was nice enough to drive me home -- what a stand up guy he is. Post Op The next day I came back into the office and Stuart took off my bandages, cleaned up me and took some photos. The recovery from there was all exactly as Dr. Panine and Stuart said it would be. The team communicated with me very well and helped me get everything moving in the right direction for a speedy recovery. The swelling lasted a few days and after that we were off and running. I met with Dr. Panine & Stuart every few months just to do a status check and what always amazed me about these meetings was how on top of everything they were. They helped me understand how things were progressing and what to expect next. Overall the recovery was very smooth and I was one of the lucky ones who progressed a bit faster than normal. It was such a great feeling to wake up every morning and see what new progress I had made. I kept my own journal of pictures that I took each month -- going back and looking at them is nothing short of amazing. Conclusion The decision to have this procedure done absolutely changed my life. I know this sounds super cheesy but I honestly feel like a new person. Choosing Dr. Panine really came down to his personal touch, commitment to me and the ability of his team to go above and beyond my expectations. I would be remiss if I didn't give a huge shout out to Stuart as well. His kindness, understanding and ability to communicate makes him one of the best in the business -- he is truly a difference maker. I would recommend Dr. Panine not only for artistry, care and execution -- but also because Stuart is there to make you feel confident about the process the whole way through.
  9. This post is about 4.5 months overdue but wanted to give my experience. If you've been on this site for a while you know that I've been through many surgeries. This is my 5th! Quick recap, 1: Dr. Pong 1800 grafts FUT 2: Dr. Panine 3500 grafts FUT 3. Dr, Panine 2000 grafts FUE 4. Dr. Bhatti 1800 grafts FUE and this one 5: Dr. Laorwong 2000 FUE If you are curious, you can search my name and see pictures of previous procedures. I have no idea how it came to this many grafts considering where I started and I was on finasteride the entire time. Dr. Pong was my best procedure. If did where you can see all the hairs on the temples. 100% growth it felt and looked like. Dr. Panine 5500 grafts.. were mostly in the crown.. which to this day is still thin. I'd say less than 50% growth. Dr. Bhatti was okay but I still needed this last procedure to fix spots he missed or hair didn't grow. Dr. Laowrong was a great experience. Unlike many FUE clinics including the well regarded Dr. Erogodan and Bhatti, Dr. L only does one procedure a day and extracts all grafts, makes incisions, places the grafts with the help of his top assistant. PRP is also included. The clinic is clean and modern. The aftercare package was very detailed and comprehensive. I felt zero pain during the procedure or after. I healed very quickly as well. A great thing about having a procedure in Thailand is that you can relax with foot massages and delicious food while recovering, A hair transplant and vacation tied together is always great. I am 4.5 months post up and I appear to have some growth happening. I will keep updates of my final outcome. Let me know if you have any questions
  10. Have you checked Dr. Larwong at Absolute Hair Clinic? I'm 4.5 months out. The experience was very good and the doctor is involved in everything. One patient a day as well. Can't speak for results yet but the work looked good and detailed. edit. I also had a FUT with Dr. Pong as my first FUT procedure. That was by far my best outcome which was better than Dr. Bhatti and Dr. Panine in terms of growth and minimal scar. But his focus is FUT as you know.
  11. BADB-BROS, Dr. Panine is exceptional. He did transplant surgery for me in 2013. My results were also excellent and they only got better. Yours will as well. Congrats! You made the right choice!
  12. Hey Guys, Both Dr. Panine and Dr. Koniorare excellent surgeons and both are highly esteemed members of the Coalition of Independent Hair Restoration Physicians. In this post, a patient of Dr. Panine shared his experience and photos. I know there have been some concerns posted about punch size. I think perhaps the patient should get a confirmation on which punch size was used however, using a pump size up 0.9 mm or even 1.1 mm under some circumstances is completely appropriate. Thus, in my opinion I don’t think there’s any reason to be concerned at this stage. I’m sure the patient will have great results I look forward to seeing them when they grow in. Best wishes, Bill
  13. This is a great point. There are some good results I’ve seen from Dr. Panine. Konior is an excellent surgeon but maybe some people don’t want to wait for 1 year to have a procedure. Cost can be another concern as I don’t know the difference between the two. It’s not like the op went to an unqualified doctor. Based on his description of events during surgery it sounds like they took good care of him.
  14. Matt, I think you are being a bit unfair and your comments may be causing the poster some unnecessary anxiety. I have seen fantastic results from Dr. Panine, in fact another patient with similar hair characteristics as the poster had home-run results. Let's be respectful to those who have the courage to post their pictures and threads online, in the end that is what this website is all about posting our journey and results for the benefit of others. However, in order for this to thrive we have to remain respectful, especially if there are no results to judge.
  15. Dr. Panine, fantastic results, I have to say the temple points are some of the best I've seen. What size punch was used for this patient? It appears the grafts were taken fairly high up, I know that the "universal" safe zone is not universal at all, what is your philosophy or thoughts on going outside of the "universal" zone?

Dr. Panine FUE - Reivew Post Op

Congratulations on your recent hair transplant and outstanding results with Dr. Panine. This is also an exceptional example of why members need to reserve judgment on a patient’s 6 months progress as this clearly shows significant additional growth between 6 months and 15 months. I also encourage you to create a patient website by going to www.hairlossweblogs.com. There, you can share your experience, create journals with pictures month by month, rate and review your hair transplant surgeon, etc. we are also in the process of creating a new, much more mobile friendly Version of the patient website so stay tune. But all of the existing patient websites will be transferred over to the new system so we certainly hope you share your results in progress pictures there as well. Best wishes, Bill
  17. Right now I am absolutely thrilled with my current hair line situation -- I wouldn't change a thing about it. But yea I think eventually I will make a second pass. Dr. Panine and I talked a little about that prior to my procedure and he was very upfront and honest about long term planning. Really appreciated him setting my expectations like that.
  18. I've been doing a lot of research since you're the second person to comment on the punch size. Seeing some of your posts, I know you know a good amount about F.U.E and probably know that some F.U.E. Surgeons do punch sizes up to 1mm. In fact, .9mm is currently fairly standard for F.U.E. procedures; besides creating larger scars, larger punches can risk collateral damage to neighboring follicles. Smaller punches risk transecting the follicle structure, or not bringing enough scalp tissue along that will allow the follicle to survive. I do see a lot of pictures with people with smaller punches like yours that heal quicker but, that's not always the best options for surgeons and there overall needs to be compromises to achieve the results you want. I personally don't mind the punch size as long as it heals well; which, I am fortunate enough to have a lot of dermatologists' and aestheticians' as clients to know what to do and how to heal it even better then most would (Thank god for being a hairstylist!). I've also, seen other before and after photos of Dr. Panine with the same punch size (.7mm) and they had pretty great recovering results and overall even better hair results. So, please don't be alarmed because all procedures are done differently and all overall healing results are different depending on the person.

    HT Recommendation and Suggestions Needed

I have attached my current status of my hair loss. I have narrowed down to Dr.Bhatti, Dr.Panine, Dr.Madhu Please let me know what you guys recommend.
  20. Hi Everyone - first time poster. I am a 32yom Norwood IV/IVa in the Chicago area considering FUE. Given my work schedule, I unfortunately have a very limited time period that I can get the procedure performed. I have searched the forums and understand that the recommended doctors are Drs. Konior, Keller, and Panine. Dr. Konior is no longer taking new consultation dud to his wait period. He has recommended Dr. Nadimi - I have not had a consultation and understand that she is new. I have consulted with RESTORE under Dr. Katona - and overall had a positive experience with realistic expectations and a price point that was within range (2000 FUE for approximately 12K). There have been no recent reviews of his work or discussion outside of him working on celebrities (Urlacher, Deion Sanders, Ryne Sandberg, etc). I was hoping people could comment on their experience with RESTORE, what are any hesitations going with them, and value (price for quality) relative to the others. Comments on the others would also be appreciated: 1. Dr. Katona/RESTORE 2. Dr. Nadimi (pricing same as Konior?, results?) 3. Dr. Keller 4. Dr. Panine
  21. This 27-year-old gentleman had a hair loss pattern similar to a class 4 on the Hamilton Norwood hair loss scale. His goal was to rebuild his hairline and add density to the frontal 1/3-1/2 of his scalp. Taking his age and hair loss into consideration we came upon an agreement for what would suite his expectations. After establishing his medical history and understanding the progression of his hair loss, I diagnosed his condition as Androgenetic Alopecia (male pattern baldness), ruling out any other possible dermatological or medical conditions which can cause hair loss. The patient’s goal was well suited to his needs and therefore I planned the surgery accordingly. I wanted to reconstruct a hairline that would be suitable for him as he continued to age. A total of 3,089 grafts were used. I used a significant amount of single hair follicular units which allowed me to create a very natural hairline. This action will allow him to comb his hair without anyone detecting that he has had anything done. These are his results 9 months post op and he will continue to get more improvement over the next 6 months. The patient is extremely happy with his result and is taking finasteride 1mg to control further hair loss.
  22. I have a consultation with Dr. Keller scheduled for Saturday. I have seen that he is recommended here but have only seen transplant results that he has posted and would like to hear about others' personal experiences. I have never had a hair transplant and would like to fill in my receding hairline. My hair loss has been stabilized for years and I feel that it is now time to fill it in. Additionally, I am interested in receiving feedback about important questions that I should ask him during the consultation. I have a list of questions already, but would love to add more from the seasoned pros. No disrespect to Konior fans, but I am not interested in pursuing his assistance due to the wait and potential cost. Don't worry, I am in no way looking for a budget transplant. I've seen other people ask about Keller or Panine only to see the thread be derailed into talks about Konior and I am really seeking feedback about Keller, specifically. Thank you in advance!

Konior recommends fewer grafts because he could work his magic with fewer. Neither doctor is wrong, necessarily, but Konior is of a much higher esteem on these forums and for good reason. You won’t find a negative review for him on here. I don’t know that much about Dr. Panine except that he’s very aggressive with his hairlines. I’m not a fan of them but they can be quite bulky. The fewer grafts you use to achieve your desired goal the better, though. I agree with the majority that you’re oftly young to be taking the plunge but if you absolutely must do this then Dr. Konior’s hands are the hands you would want to put your head in. Good luck with your decision.

How many grafts do you guys think I would need. I Had a consultation with Dr.Panine and reccomened 2000 grafts, but when consulting with dr.konior he recommended 1,500 grafts.
