Advice for Hair Loss Sufferers Considering Hair Transplant Surgery

  1. These consults are done by a patient advisor, and are free, but does it cost to have a consult done with Dr. Hasson or Wong? How much? Can we apply it to our procedure if there is a cost? Thanks in advance!
  2. Hey 1978Matt, Happy growing! I am sure you're gonna get a wonderful result. I would not expect anything less from a surgeon of Dr. Konior's calibre. Perhaps the picture is a bit deceiving, but it appears that your strip scar is relatively low compared to what we sometimes see from some surgeons like Dr. Hasson. Were there any advantages of collecting the strip from that location? Also, do you happen to know what your donor density was per cm2 before having any surgery? Matt3480, Out of curiosity, which other surgeons did Dr. Konior mention he was impressed by?
  3. Thanks for the response. I have had consultations with the following: Sean Benham recommending 900 grafts @ $6250 LA Hair Clinic recommending 1200-1500 grafts @ $10,000 Mark Dauer recommending 1200-1400 grafts @ $10,000 Hasson & Wong recommending 1800 grafts @ $14,400 I really like the results at LA Hair Clinic, but I am skeptical about the limited amount of reviews here. I was excited about Dr. Benham, but I didn't like the way they had me meet with this random former patient who was trying to sell me on the surgery. He was like a used car salesman. Dr. Dauer was not friendly at all and I am not that impressed with the results on his site. Hasson/Wong seems legit based on reviews but I don't think I'm in need of 1800 grafts. Still waiting to hear back from Nader in Mexico and Lorenzo in Spain.
  4. I think the answer is yes:) Vancouver area patient in his late 40’s with above average donor hair. Dr. Hasson and team moved 4656 grafts via FUT restoring the hairline, frontal zone, and mid-scalp up to the crown. 1312 singles, 3179 doubles, and 165 3-4 hair grafts were employed to create this high-density result. He started Finasteride at the time of the procedure and it looks to have improved the crown to this point. These photos were taken 8 months post-op.
  5. The multigrafts in the hairline are definitely an issue (and there are definitely a lot, almost without differentiation in placement), but personally I think the biggest negative is how poorly the hairs placed in the break from hairline to temple region looks. They are taken too low and rounded almost like a female hairline, and obviously that area requires even more softness and precision in angles to look natural but it looks quite odd. There were likely never hairs in that area to begin with even prior to hairloss. Dr Couto in Spain as you mentioned gets incredible results but his waiting list is 4 years so likely out of the question. Dr. Alexander does good work although I haven't seen any repairs from them and as does Hasson. Cooley also does impressive repair work. Personally I would get the hairs in the temple area removed because they look very much out of place , and across the rest of the hairline have single hairs placed in front of the old hairline, and add density in general. I think it makes sense not to name the surgeon, it gives leverage to get a refund potentially that you don't have if you instantly out them.
  6. Vancouver area patient with average donor hair. Dr. Hasson and team dense packed 5044 grafts via FUT to restore the hairline, frontal zone and parts of the mid scalp. 5044 grafts included 1011 single hair grafts, 3670 doubles and 363 3-4 hair grafts. Photos were taken 10 months post-op
  7. Hello MoeFall, thought I'd step in here and provide some advice based on my experience with Doc Gupta, since I have actually had 3 transplants at SureHair where he is the medical director, I would say that yes this man has and does take on an awful lot he seems very ambitious, and I have spoken to him at times when he seemed tired and somewhat stressed, and I have also spoken to him when he was lively and relaxed , but the bottom line, the thing to keep your eye on are the results he is providing, and truth be told I have seen a number of their clients and I am one myself the results are second to none, excellent density and probably some of the best graft implantation techniques/work in North America since most of their surgical techniques where developed by one of the foremost pioneers of modern hair transplantation himself Dr. Seager. I would say his results are on par with Hasson & Wong, or Rahal, maybe in some instances, your could say Rahal was better or Gupta was better, but my experience has been having gone through it that Doc Gupta has an amazing team to work with and they have a boatload of experience, the best part for me was I didn't have to pay anywhere near Rahal or Hasson & Wong prices. So I would say yea give them your time and attention and compare them to the others you are considered, they delivered for me.
  8. Hi Everyone, Firstly, thanks to all the members for sharing all of your experience and advice, it's been a pleasure to read, and also a great help to me. My hair loss began probably in my late teens, and was hardly noticeable at first due to my hair being so thick when I was young. By the time I was in my early 20's, my hairline had receded quite a way, and my hair at the front on the top was getting very thin. My hair loss shattered my self-confidence and i became extremely self-conscious about it. I would obsess over how my hair looked constantly, sometimes re-doing my hair over and over, trying to make it look ok before I left the house. Looking back on it I can remember how much it affected my daily life. It sounds kind of ridiculous now, but i remember doing things like only sitting against the window on one side of the train on the way to work so that the one side of my head (where recession was particularly bad) wasn't on show to everyone inside. It got to the stage where, in December 2014, I told my mum I'd like to try out finasteride/propecia/proscar to see if it would help me. I spent a lot of time withdrawn from social situations and it was really getting me down. I was aware of the potential sexual side effects (which scared the hell out of me) but was willing to try anything. My mum works in medical field and she told me, if i wanted, I could try a hormone called progesterone. It works in much the same way as fin (5-ar inhibitor) and would negate the effects of DHT, but without the side effects. As my dad used to do bio-identical hormone replacement therapy we had progesterone in the house, and I started taking 30mg every other day, on 24th December 2014. I have to say that progesterone did my hair so much good. I am not an expert and mostly went on what my folks told me as true (plus, my dad is also a GP) and it worked out well for me. From being wispy and thin at the front, much of the thickness in what hair remained returned. I could once again style my hair up (how i normally styled it in the past) although, where the hair had completely disappeared, there was no new hair coming through. I ended up with a Norwood 2/3, plus a pretty uneven hairline. Despite the improvement I still wasn't really happy, so i started to look into hair transplants. I quickly established that the UK wasn't the place to go, so I would have to travel. After trawling the net and looking around I was particularly impressed with Hasson & Wong. Luckily, my folks live in British Columbia and would be able to help me through the post-op period which was a deal. I saw H&W were doing consultations in London so I booked a consult with David (great guy btw) who took my pictures to send to the clinic. They came back and told me I'd be a good candidate and would probably need 2,500 - 2,700 grafts. I booked myself a slot and was told Dr. Hasson would be my surgeon for the procedure. I was going to quit my job anyway and I saw this as a great opportunity to do the surgery as I would need time to recover. Before I left I lined up a new job to start in July. Having to explain to my new CEO and a room full of directors that I couldn't start for 2 months because I was having a hair transplant was an experience!! Thankfully they understood and I had my window. On the 5th May flew out to the US for a golf trip and, on the return leg of my US trip, I went to Vancouver for the surgery. I planned to have the surgery, stay in Vancouver a week, then stay with my parents in Canada for just over two weeks. H&W include two nights in a (very!) nice hotel, but instead took what they would have spent on a room off my final bill, and I organised my own place to stay. I ended up renting a small apartment from airbnb in Kitsilano (close to the surgery) which was perfect for my needs and about $80 a night. On the day of my surgery I was due in the clinic at 7:30am. I arrived and filled in some forms and they performed a few rudimentary health checks like blood pressure readings etc. I then met Dr. Hasson and we spoke about potential hairlines, what would look best etc. He was very interested to hear that I had been taking progesterone and asked me lots of questions about it. He said that many patients were completely put off by the potential side effects of fin and he actually did look at progesterone, but hadn't had any patients try it out as yet. He said my scalp was a little tight but that the donor looked good (I was very lazy with my laxity exercises). He then drew 2 different choices of hairline, plus the option to lower each one down, giving a total of four options. I opted for the flattest, lowest line, which he told me we should be fine with the grafts we could get. Some of my native hair was shaved at the front, some photos were taken,I was given a valium, then taken for the strip to be removed. The injections do hurt but it's not the end of the world and there was no pain after that. I was talking throughout the strip removal procedure and Dr Hasson was encouraging me to talk as he worked. When I stopped blabbing I realised why. You can hear the scalpel cutting as the strip is removed - it was a dreadful sound! After they close the gap and staple you up, the technicians begin to remove the grafts. At this time, Dr. Hasson started to make the punches for the grafts to go into. He asked a technician to tell him when they were halfway done with the graft removal and how many they had gotten. After a while, she said something like 1,600 at halfway, so I knew we were looking good on graft count. Interestingly, during the whole process I didn't watch the TV once. Maybe it was the valium, but I was just happy to sit there as they worked and look out at the fantastic view of Vancouver from the OR. I just felt a sense of relief I suppose. That I was finally getting this done and I was pretty happy to be there. I ended up getting close to 4,000 grafts in the end. I can't remember exactly when we finished, but it was the evening - 7pm or something like that. They give you a loose fitting cap and a few pain meds and send you on your way. For me the first night was absolutely the worst in terms of pain. I think they gave me three percocet, all of which i took on the first night and they didn't really even touch the sides - the back of my head was reaaaallly tight and painful! Luckily, after that first night there was never pain that bad again, although sleeping upright for 5 days with staples in your head isn't very pleasant. I went in to the clinic every day over the next three days and had H&W wash my hair, which was a pleasure - the staff there are all fantastic and everyone has such a pleasant disposition. My entire face swelled up CONSIDERABLY on the third day as the solution they put into your scalp to plump it up during the procedure worked it's way down my face. On the Friday I flew to my folks' place (going through the airport wasn't great, I was still pretty swollen), and was there for a couple of weeks. I applied vitamin E oil on my scalp, day and night, which helped the scabs to come off just shy of 10 days. Having the staples taken out was absolutely amazing - being able to sleep on my side again was nice! I am now back in the UK and exactly 2 months on from surgery. I am happy I took so long off work (9 weeks) as the redness was very apparent for over a month. I am also blonde and have fair hair, which I don't think helps the redness situation. Pretty much all transplanted hair has fallen out and I am now trying my best to to be patient - it's very tough! Sorry for the large amount of text - I am trying not to miss anything out! Here's a breakdown of my 3898 grafts from the clinic: 1040 singles 2737 doubles 121 multi’s (3 and 4 hair follicular units) I've included pictures of: Hairline before the procedure (Top & Front x2) 1 day post (Angle, Top, Front) 6 day post closeup (Left and Right) 13 day post front 15 day post from 1 month post 2 months post (Today) EDIT: I mixed up the number of grafts on the main title - it should read 3,898 - not 3,989. I am not sure how to change this.
  9. Just so you know, my first hair transplant was not with Dr. True. It is with Dr. Katz of Philadelphia. My second hair transplant was with Dr. True and my third and fourth hair transplant were with Dr. Hasson. Bill
  10. This Vancouver area patient in his 30’s was bothered by the thinning of his hairline, particularly in the corners. He wanted the option to wear his hair very short on the sides and back which influenced his decision to choose FUE as the method of extraction. The game plan was to reconstruct the hairline at it’s existing location in addition to reducing the temporal angles. Very pleased with the outcome, he came back in 18 months post-op to show Dr. Hasson his result. 1310 grafts via FUE were used of which 184 were single hair grafts, 677 doubles and 449 were 3-4 hair grafts. A 0.8 mm punch was used.
  11. I am a patient of Dr. Hasson and used to take proscar for many years. Decided to switch to topical finasteride per Dr. Hasson recommendation more than a year ago due to side effects. However, I can no longer order it from Canada as the topical gel is not FDA approved and cannot be ordered from Canada and imported to the US anymore.! I need some help as to where in the US I can order the Topical Fin Gel? I just don't want to blindly order it online! Would really appreciate all your responses. Thanks! KamCal
  12. This patient in his 40's traveled from China to Vancouver for his procedure with Dr. Hasson. Wanting as many grafts as possible, his expectations were exceeded with 6364 grafts via FUT. A light crown coverage, while not expected in the first session, was able to be achieved with this number. He had hair on the finer side and 2180 singles,3844 doubles and 340 3-4 hair grafts made up the total. These photos were the result of his first FUT procedure taken 16 months post-op on his second visit to the clinic. He again wanted to maximize the yield and elected to have another FUT followed up with an FUE procedure. The 2 day total combining the FUT and FUE was 3448 grafts of which 2545 were FUT and 903 were FUE. A .08 mm punch size was used for the FUE. The second visit added some density to the frontal zone, reconstructed temple points and increased the density for the crown. Of the 4 post-op shots, the second full head shot (with his arms folded in his lap) represent the first procedure immediately post-op, the other 3 are immediate post-op from his 2nd FUT/FUE procedure. If only they would have taken another 188 to get to 10,000, that would have had a nice ring to it  But, I don’t think he’s complaining…
  13. Here is my hair 25 days after shaving. So near 1/2inch. Fuking hell. Looks like absolute shit. Hope Hasson and Wong can sort me out a little better. The doctor that did this clearly doesn't sew well. I was told by Dr. Larwong that I have plenty of scalp laxity. Careful who you allow to slice your head open folks.
  14. I am a Norwood 6. I started to lose my hair in my late teens and have been more or less bald since my mid twenties. I waffled a bit over the years considering hair transplant surgery, but finally decided to give it a go, even if that meant debt. I researched many of the top doctors and decided to go with Hasson & Wong. I'm a big HW fan, especially because of their stellar megasessions. I flew into Vancouver (great airport) and met Dr. Hasson the afternoon prior to the surgery date. I liked him immediately. He's intelligent, articulate, confident, professional, and tells you like it is. I like to say "he speaks as one having authority, not like the Pharisees and Sadducees." During the consultation, we discussed the game plan for the following morning -- to knock it out of the park with a single megasession, i.e. harvest as many grafts as possible and find a happy medium in terms of density and coverage. Dr. Hasson has a wonderful team, including Doug, Mike, Christina, Nico, and the technicians -- experienced, focused, personable. I was in good hands. SURGERY The next morning we worked on the hairline. I was happy with Dr. Hasson's design and we moved forward with the FUT strip. The cutting and stapling weren't terribly painful, but it was (as Dr. Hasson remarked) a "marathon," lasting almost 2 hours. The graft count was 5599. A bit later, Dr. Hasson made around 3400 incisions on the top of my scalp (I was given a counter), and then the technicians began the implantation. A couple of hours later, Dr. Hasson came in and made another 1400 incisions, for a total of 4800 or so (many of my single grafts were doubled up, 5599 grafts > 4800 incisions). I was a little disappointed that there were so many singles and so few multiples in my graft breakdown, but Dr. Hasson managed to cover around two-thirds of my scalp, which I was happy with considering we had a lot of ground to cover. The technicians were very patient with me in spite of my neck pain (disc herniation) and we finished up the surgery around 10pm. I only slept for 3-4 hours that night due to donor site pain and nausea. I also had significant bleeding from the donor area -- particularly the sides -- that night; grateful for those pillow covers. I went in for a cleaning the next afternoon. I spent one more night in Vancouver and flew home early the next morning. RECOVERY: FIRST TWO WEEKS The first 8-9 days of recovery were brutal, and that's coming from someone with an unusually high pain tolerance. I had moderate to severe pain along the sides of the donor area, which were covered in thick black scabs (dried blood) for the first 12 days. I also had moderate pain at the very top of my crown. I slept sitting up for the first week. I babied my scalp 24/7. I was unrecognizable from Day 3 to Day 5 due to facial swelling. I had lots of crusting and cracking on the scalp Day 5 through Day 11. The crusts and scabs came off the recipient area on Day 11 after I soaked my head in warm water for 10 minutes. I expect they would've gone away earlier if I hadn't been so careful in the shower. I managed to get the scabs off the donor area by Day 14 after generous doses of Vitamin E oil and vigorous washing. The staples came off on Day 15. The staple extraction was extremely painful around the sides, but I powered through it as I had received the green light from the clinic. The implanted hairs began to fall out on Day 15. It's Day 25 now and I estimate I've lost maybe 33% of them. DONOR SCAR As mentioned, there was an unusual amount of trauma at the donor site above the ears, particularly on the right side. It makes sense considering that I had considerably less elasticity around the sides than I did at the back. Lots of shockloss. I'm trying to keep an open mind with regard to the scarring, but I have to confess that the size of the hairless patch is a little disheartening. My hair is around 2.5 inches long around the sides but the scar is still painfully obvious, even as we're approaching one month post-op. The hairless area spans over 2 inches (from top to bottom) above the right ear. There's still a lot of tenderness there. I'm hoping that my donor scars will be presentable to the public soon, but at this rate I suspect it will be a couple of months. This is quite deflating, and leaving the hair so long at the sides with a bald scalp is a rather unbecoming sight. We'll see. SUMMARY Dr. Hasson managed to get a very good graft count (5599 grafts). The hair-to-graft ratio is less promising than I'd hoped for (1.64; 9200 hairs) but, as Dr. Hasson pointed out, I have excellent hair -- coarse, especially the hair at the back -- so we're still expecting happy results. I am a firm believer in Dr. Hasson's abilities and eagerly look forward to seeing the fruits of his labor next year. Total grafts: 5599 Total hairs: 9200 Average hairs per graft extracted: 1.64 Hair quality: very good (coarse)
  15. My first in person HT consult was with Dr. Feller because of his reputation and the fact that he was in my backyard. I think he's a top notch surgeon and agree with most of his arguments in the FUT vs FUE debate. Unfortunately, I think he overly discounts patients' real choice and option in wanting to undergo a less invasive procedure with FUE. At least that was the case for me, I did not want a strip scar from ear to ear. I chose to undergo 3 smaller FUE procedures spread out over time that were less invasive and quicker healing time to get back to work and other activities. Hasson & Wong are now doing FUE if a patient so choses, I hope Feller & Bloxham embrace that option for patients as well.
  16. Long-time creeper, first-time poster. I had two prior HTs scheduled with local doctors but backed out weeks before. So glad I did because given my hair loss pattern (NW6), I needed to put myself in the best position for a quality, long-term result which consensus seems to point to H&W (large FUT for high NW). This forum saved me from not going with an elite surgeon. It's only fair I pay it forward. I've been on propecia for 5 years now. Directly from the front, you really couldn't tell I had any hairloss. It's primarily focused on the crown. 3,700 grafts were placed in the crown, sized around ~85 cm2 for a density around ~43/cm2 . I was told I have slightly above average texture and hair diameter. While I have coverage in the mid-scalp and front, it's miniaturized all over. I'd like to tackle the remainder in the future. I was told I have 4,000 grafts remaining via FUT alone. Nothing new to add about the procedure that hasn't been said in the past. Dr. Hasson's results should speak for themselves. After scouring the internet for two years, it's clear he's arguably the best surgeon when it comes to FUT for high NW patients. I feel I put myself in the best position for a successful result. Time will tell. Pictures are mid-op, 1 day post-op, pre-op wet, and pre-op dry. Thoughts/feedback would be greatly appreciated!
  17. I read an article on the hairloss cure by 2020 site that's titled "Dr. Hasson Ditches Oral Finasteride." Since this is out there in kind of a big way now, I didn't contact the center directly and thought that maybe one of the reps would want to expand on what that means. Has there been a benefit to this for patients that have been on fin for some time? Is he not prescribing it old patients that are doing well on it? How would you persuade someone to justify the cost difference? etc. Also, how accurate is the article? Did he really ditch oral fin or is he just making it more available as a choice?
  18. Both doctors are well known for their FUT mega session and high- density HT, but in terms of strip scars who is better in producing some most undetectable and minimal scars?
  19. This Italian patient in his late 30’s started losing his hair when he was around 20 years old. When he decided it was time to do something about his loss, his research led him to an Italian forum. He concluded Dr. Hasson would be the best option to perform his hair restoration procedure after reviewing many of his patient’s results. Dr. Hasson and team transplanted 5,372 grafts to the frontal zone and mid scalp. 1700 were single hair grafts, 3444 were doubles and 228 were 3-4 hair grafts. He started Finasteride shortly after his procedure to maintain parts of the mid scalp and crown. He is thrilled with his result and the new shorter hair style suits him well. He also enjoys styling products that weren’t really a consideration before his transplant. Photos taken in Italy, 1 year post-op.
  20. I think the second one is FUE, if I’m right do I get to lunch with Dr. Hasson and Dr. Wong when I visit Vancouver this year? Lol
  21. I must say the truth hurts from you guys lol. Now I can't help but research nordwood 7 success stories and I must say some of them give me hope. I think the best thing is to have realistic expectations. Am I looking to have full coverage from front to back and be 100% dense? No. Mature hairline that will fit me in 10 years. I understand the approach to wait and get on meds and see how it turns out. These 2 (especially the 2nd link) are the most recent postings that give me the most hope. I understand everyone's case is different, but I will cling on to these results lol http://www.hairrestorationnetwork.com/eve/189630-dr-hasson-7410-grafts-fut-1-session-1-year-post-op.html http://www.hairrestorationnetwork.com/eve/189562-dr-wong-7382-grafts-fut-2-sessions-stage-6-7-6-years-post-op.html I've also seen some stellar results from Dr. Umar on high norwoods.
  22. No more hats, I personally like your username… That’s exactly how I felt when I was seeking to restore my hair for the first time. I was tired of wearing hats because everybody knew I was wearing hats all the time to cover obvious baldness especially in the back. However, before I underwent my first hair transplant procedure, I had Lost pretty much everything on top that made my hair look thick and full. If it wasn’t for hair transplant surgery now, I would be completely bald on top and be forced to shave my head. Instead, I can grow my hair long as I want or cut it as short as I want and be able to style it very well. That said, I also recall being in a similar position and deciding between Hasson and Wong and Dr. Rahal. I’m not familiar with the other doctor you mentioned, other than that she is Dr. Konior’s apprentice - which is certainly a good thing since Dr. Konior is top notch with an impeccable attention to detail. The other three which includes Hasson, Wong and Rahal are outstanding. While I ended up going to Dr. Hasson, I would have trusted my scalp with either of them. If you feel most impressed with Dr. Rahal, then he may be the best doctor for you. I am confident you will be very happy and ecstatic with his work and results. Best wishes, Bil
  23. For example, l was told by two H&W reps that l was a candidate for either FUE or FUT. However, upon meeting Dr. Hasson in person, he said absolutely no to FUT due to elasticity issues. Imagine if l had only learned this the day of my surgery! At Rahal, l was quoted x number of grafts for FUE and FUT. When l met with Dr. Rahal in person at his clinic, he had a very different approach to my HT plan that resulted in much fewer grafts. Again, l would have been extremely upset to learn this on the day of my surgery. Bottom line is had l booked my HT after only the rep assessments, l would have received entirely different recommendations/plans/expectations the day of my surgery. At least now l have met each doctor in person and l know exactly what to expect when l walk in.
  24. I have also had in-person consultations with H&W and Rahal. Just a little advice....Tara at Rahal is fantastic, H&W reps not so much, but you MUST see Dr. Rahal and Dr. Hasson in person before you make your decision. The docs will ultimately make the final call on your HT strategy and it will likely differ drastically from what you were originally told in the consultation (especially at H&W). Very frustrating and you may end up very disappointed!
  25. This Vancouver area patient in his early 50’s had a small previous procedure to address his hairline back in 2000. It still looked fine but density and volume of the frontal zone had decreased over the years. Wanting to improve the area, he returned to have Dr. Hasson rebuild the hairline, frontal zone and temples with 4579 grafts via FUT. 1221 grafts were singles, 3279 doubles and 79 were 3-4 hair grafts. These shots were taken 8 months post-op
