Advice for Hair Loss Sufferers Considering Hair Transplant Surgery

My Story

  1. For your amount of loss and desire to do FUE I would only consider Erdogan, maybe Dr. Freitas in Spain also but he seems to usually do mid sized cases and has a waiting list over a year. Also more expensive than Erdogan. A lot of great FUE clinics like HLC mentioned above aren't suitable for you because they typically do significantly smaller graft numbers than ASMED which you require. I know you mention you don't want FUT but I would also consider Hasson and Wong as an option. Also ASMED is on the cheaper end of top surgeons, half or less the price of most.
  2. Hello guys and thank you for your great concern! @delancey Thanks a lot for you advices, it gives me some courage, that i could maybe if everything works fine, the crown could also be adressed in the future and of course I will stick with my medicine treatment and be careful to do nothing rash. About the doctors, I have done my research about 1 year now, and I am really fine to stick with both doctors; contacting Hattingen Hair is really really hard, because he do all of his consultation and communication by his own, but that's something I really sorrow about, I've wrote to him a week a go and no answer, with dr. Devroy I had a skype call, and I can reach him very well. @Castillo I am not really agree, If I adress front and mid scalp with 5000 grafts and the crown expands, maybe the donor wont be able to be harvested that much anymore, what do you think? @newpatient99 Thank you, something like the hair line you posted would be a dream for me, imagine, Iam walking with no Hairline since my early 20th, so I dont bother with conservative hairlines, moreover i like them more then "straight" ones. @Melvin-Moderator This is something, I still thinking about, the guys from Hattingen Hair (I think they are very close to Hasson and Wong, even Joe Tillman is saying that) do get some serious Graft amount per Max-Strip with avg about 4000-4500 Grafts. In my case I think I have a morely small had, so I have to be avg or less. please delete if not wanted) As Dr.Devroy has morely strips with 3,5K Grafts. So there is the question, what is better; Hattingen is behind the theory, that a Max Strip with 4k or more and than a 2k strip and after all a 1k FUE would provide the most graft yield, they also say that the skin laxety will dramatically decrease with the first strip surgery. As I am also very young and cant tell if the current Hair situation wont drastical change, I am not sure if I should keep the max Strip method in my mind. Maybe ther're also some negative points about such a massive strip surgery? Hope my english is good enough, If you dont understand my remarks, please don't hestiate to ask, so i would describe it more detailed. I also like to mention, that this decision is some of the improtant ones of my life, so i dont take it that easy. Thank you in advance.
  3. Thanks for the nice comments guys! HairlossPA, Actually, no grafts placed in the crown but a few slightly behind the frontal zone. The majority in the hairline and frontal zone. densedream, I actually went back and compared how he aged as I thought he looked pretty good for 40? Wazaam, I would say both. Back in 05, Dr. Hasson had predicted a final hair loss pattern of a 3A. So little if any projected mid-scalp and crown thinning. Looking at him today I would say he was accurate. While not critical in his case, he was on Finasteride back in 05 and is taking it today. Melvin, As I mentioned regarding the 10-day post-op shot, we did not regularly take immediate post-op shots back in 05 and therefore don’t have graft placement pics. jj51702, He stopped Rogaine just before his procedure and we would have advised not to continue using it.
  4. These consults are done by a patient advisor, and are free, but does it cost to have a consult done with Dr. Hasson or Wong? How much? Can we apply it to our procedure if there is a cost? Thanks in advance!
  5. Patient in his mid to late 20’s traveled from New York to see Dr. Hasson about his hairline and frontal zone loss. Good donor with hair shaft diameter on the finer side. Dr. Hasson and team transplanted 4260 grafts to restore the hairline, frontal zone and a small portion of the mid-scalp. 938 were single hair grafts, the remaining 3322 were 2, 3 and 4 hair grafts. We did not always document and break down the singles from the larger grafts back in 2005. Still looking good nearly 13 years later as he approaches 40 years old. Placement shot taken 10 days post-op, we did not usually take immediate post-op shots back in 05. While his scar was good, he wanted to improve it even more. 312 FUE grafts were recently placed into it to further minimize. 18 were single hair grafts, 177 double’s, 117 were 3-4 hair grafts.
  6. Hey 1978Matt, Happy growing! I am sure you're gonna get a wonderful result. I would not expect anything less from a surgeon of Dr. Konior's calibre. Perhaps the picture is a bit deceiving, but it appears that your strip scar is relatively low compared to what we sometimes see from some surgeons like Dr. Hasson. Were there any advantages of collecting the strip from that location? Also, do you happen to know what your donor density was per cm2 before having any surgery? Matt3480, Out of curiosity, which other surgeons did Dr. Konior mention he was impressed by?
  7. Thanks for the response. I have had consultations with the following: Sean Benham recommending 900 grafts @ $6250 LA Hair Clinic recommending 1200-1500 grafts @ $10,000 Mark Dauer recommending 1200-1400 grafts @ $10,000 Hasson & Wong recommending 1800 grafts @ $14,400 I really like the results at LA Hair Clinic, but I am skeptical about the limited amount of reviews here. I was excited about Dr. Benham, but I didn't like the way they had me meet with this random former patient who was trying to sell me on the surgery. He was like a used car salesman. Dr. Dauer was not friendly at all and I am not that impressed with the results on his site. Hasson/Wong seems legit based on reviews but I don't think I'm in need of 1800 grafts. Still waiting to hear back from Nader in Mexico and Lorenzo in Spain.
  8. Vancouver area patient around 60 years old at the time of his procedure. Dr. Hasson and team transplanted 4,200 densely packed grafts via FUT to rebuild the hairline, frontal zone and mid scalp. 1214 were single hair grafts, 2843 were doubles and 143 were 3-4 hair grafts. Hair shaft caliber was on the finer side but the overall donor hair characterizes were ideal. These photos were taken at the clinic just short of 14 months post-op.
  9. The multigrafts in the hairline are definitely an issue (and there are definitely a lot, almost without differentiation in placement), but personally I think the biggest negative is how poorly the hairs placed in the break from hairline to temple region looks. They are taken too low and rounded almost like a female hairline, and obviously that area requires even more softness and precision in angles to look natural but it looks quite odd. There were likely never hairs in that area to begin with even prior to hairloss. Dr Couto in Spain as you mentioned gets incredible results but his waiting list is 4 years so likely out of the question. Dr. Alexander does good work although I haven't seen any repairs from them and as does Hasson. Cooley also does impressive repair work. Personally I would get the hairs in the temple area removed because they look very much out of place , and across the rest of the hairline have single hairs placed in front of the old hairline, and add density in general. I think it makes sense not to name the surgeon, it gives leverage to get a refund potentially that you don't have if you instantly out them.
  10. Hello MoeFall, thought I'd step in here and provide some advice based on my experience with Doc Gupta, since I have actually had 3 transplants at SureHair where he is the medical director, I would say that yes this man has and does take on an awful lot he seems very ambitious, and I have spoken to him at times when he seemed tired and somewhat stressed, and I have also spoken to him when he was lively and relaxed , but the bottom line, the thing to keep your eye on are the results he is providing, and truth be told I have seen a number of their clients and I am one myself the results are second to none, excellent density and probably some of the best graft implantation techniques/work in North America since most of their surgical techniques where developed by one of the foremost pioneers of modern hair transplantation himself Dr. Seager. I would say his results are on par with Hasson & Wong, or Rahal, maybe in some instances, your could say Rahal was better or Gupta was better, but my experience has been having gone through it that Doc Gupta has an amazing team to work with and they have a boatload of experience, the best part for me was I didn't have to pay anywhere near Rahal or Hasson & Wong prices. So I would say yea give them your time and attention and compare them to the others you are considered, they delivered for me.
  11. Just so you know, my first hair transplant was not with Dr. True. It is with Dr. Katz of Philadelphia. My second hair transplant was with Dr. True and my third and fourth hair transplant were with Dr. Hasson. Bill
  12. I am a patient of Dr. Hasson and used to take proscar for many years. Decided to switch to topical finasteride per Dr. Hasson recommendation more than a year ago due to side effects. However, I can no longer order it from Canada as the topical gel is not FDA approved and cannot be ordered from Canada and imported to the US anymore.! I need some help as to where in the US I can order the Topical Fin Gel? I just don't want to blindly order it online! Would really appreciate all your responses. Thanks! KamCal
  13. Here is my hair 25 days after shaving. So near 1/2inch. Fuking hell. Looks like absolute shit. Hope Hasson and Wong can sort me out a little better. The doctor that did this clearly doesn't sew well. I was told by Dr. Larwong that I have plenty of scalp laxity. Careful who you allow to slice your head open folks.
  14. My first in person HT consult was with Dr. Feller because of his reputation and the fact that he was in my backyard. I think he's a top notch surgeon and agree with most of his arguments in the FUT vs FUE debate. Unfortunately, I think he overly discounts patients' real choice and option in wanting to undergo a less invasive procedure with FUE. At least that was the case for me, I did not want a strip scar from ear to ear. I chose to undergo 3 smaller FUE procedures spread out over time that were less invasive and quicker healing time to get back to work and other activities. Hasson & Wong are now doing FUE if a patient so choses, I hope Feller & Bloxham embrace that option for patients as well.
  15. I think the second one is FUE, if I’m right do I get to lunch with Dr. Hasson and Dr. Wong when I visit Vancouver this year? Lol
  16. Many have recognized Hasson and Wong as the leaders in hair restoration for many years, especially associated with FUT. However, it is only more recently that we have perfected FUE. Many still associate us with FUT and our FUE skill and proficiency may be overlooked. Dr. Hasson feels that FUE technology has caught up with FUT and we can now produce an equally impressive result with either method all things being equal. While the process by which the grafts are extracted has been dramatically improved and is the key to producing a high-quality graft, the artistry and technical skills required to produce these industry leading results still remain the same. Even perfect grafts without proper hairline design, precise angle and direction control, dense packing etc. will not achieve the desired outcome. We thought it would be interesting to present two cases. One is a FUT, the other is an FUE. Both in the 2000-2,500 graft range. I think both look exceptional. Can you tell which one is FUE and which one is FUT? Let me know what you guess and we’ll see the results and reveal which one is which later.
  17. I must say the truth hurts from you guys lol. Now I can't help but research nordwood 7 success stories and I must say some of them give me hope. I think the best thing is to have realistic expectations. Am I looking to have full coverage from front to back and be 100% dense? No. Mature hairline that will fit me in 10 years. I understand the approach to wait and get on meds and see how it turns out. These 2 (especially the 2nd link) are the most recent postings that give me the most hope. I understand everyone's case is different, but I will cling on to these results lol http://www.hairrestorationnetwork.com/eve/189630-dr-hasson-7410-grafts-fut-1-session-1-year-post-op.html http://www.hairrestorationnetwork.com/eve/189562-dr-wong-7382-grafts-fut-2-sessions-stage-6-7-6-years-post-op.html I've also seen some stellar results from Dr. Umar on high norwoods.
  18. No more hats, I personally like your username… That’s exactly how I felt when I was seeking to restore my hair for the first time. I was tired of wearing hats because everybody knew I was wearing hats all the time to cover obvious baldness especially in the back. However, before I underwent my first hair transplant procedure, I had Lost pretty much everything on top that made my hair look thick and full. If it wasn’t for hair transplant surgery now, I would be completely bald on top and be forced to shave my head. Instead, I can grow my hair long as I want or cut it as short as I want and be able to style it very well. That said, I also recall being in a similar position and deciding between Hasson and Wong and Dr. Rahal. I’m not familiar with the other doctor you mentioned, other than that she is Dr. Konior’s apprentice - which is certainly a good thing since Dr. Konior is top notch with an impeccable attention to detail. The other three which includes Hasson, Wong and Rahal are outstanding. While I ended up going to Dr. Hasson, I would have trusted my scalp with either of them. If you feel most impressed with Dr. Rahal, then he may be the best doctor for you. I am confident you will be very happy and ecstatic with his work and results. Best wishes, Bil
  19. For example, l was told by two H&W reps that l was a candidate for either FUE or FUT. However, upon meeting Dr. Hasson in person, he said absolutely no to FUT due to elasticity issues. Imagine if l had only learned this the day of my surgery! At Rahal, l was quoted x number of grafts for FUE and FUT. When l met with Dr. Rahal in person at his clinic, he had a very different approach to my HT plan that resulted in much fewer grafts. Again, l would have been extremely upset to learn this on the day of my surgery. Bottom line is had l booked my HT after only the rep assessments, l would have received entirely different recommendations/plans/expectations the day of my surgery. At least now l have met each doctor in person and l know exactly what to expect when l walk in.
  20. I have also had in-person consultations with H&W and Rahal. Just a little advice....Tara at Rahal is fantastic, H&W reps not so much, but you MUST see Dr. Rahal and Dr. Hasson in person before you make your decision. The docs will ultimately make the final call on your HT strategy and it will likely differ drastically from what you were originally told in the consultation (especially at H&W). Very frustrating and you may end up very disappointed!
  21. Thx for the comments guys! Melvin-HTsoon / stephcurry30 Correct, retrograde loss can reduce the area of good donor hair and for that reason alone it is better to a take strip higher in the donor area. Another good reason is that the scalp tissue higher up is more stable than the tissue closer to the ears. The tissue closer to the ears tends to be less like the scalp and can be prone to stretching which can result in a wider scar. In order to maximize yield, the doctor attempts to take as long and as wide a strip as safely as possible. This will often result in an incision that is closer to the temples. Dr. Hasson carefully and meticulously checks of the donor hair and can determine with uncanny certainty which hair is “permanent”. In some cases the permanent zone is quite high up on the head and quite far forward. His incision will always fall short of the end of the permanent zone and therefore the scar will never be exposed with any future potential hair loss. I've seen thousands of procedures, many of which were performed in a similar manner such as this and 16 years and counting I have yet to see a scar become exposed. As far as could this have any negative effects on the patient in the future? I would say the simple answer is no in the hands of our capable surgeons. If a particular surgeon was to miscalculate this equation and a very small portion of the scar in the temple area was to one day be exposed, a very small FUE procedure could be employed to reconstruct the small area in front of the scar to hide it. But, again this has never been necessary in our clinic but it does give the patient a bit of protection in the unlikely worst-case scenario. andy_+_+ We are forever trying to improve the quality of our photos. We have set up an area of the clinic exclusively for taking post-op videos and photos. However, there is also an area right outside the OR’s where the doctors or staff take photos in the morning before the procedure. Some factors can affect the photos such as how much outside light is coming in that area at any given time. In some cases the post-op photos are taken in another location and lighting can slightly vary and effect the skin tones. We have also experimented with different backgrounds so there may be before photos taken with one background and post-op with another. We try and match them as best we can. I hope you will agree that while the sets of photos do not always match up exactly, the quality, detail and consistency of our photos is second to none when it comes to these presentations.
  22. I wish I had your current hair! you look like you should be an easy fix for a top notch surgeon and that's the hardest part quite honestly - selection of the appropriate doctor. I've had FUE surgeries with Dr. Rahal in Ottawa. He's an excellent surgeon with the artistry needed to recreate natural hairlines. There are many others as well so do you research and consult with several until you are satisfied you can select one based on your own criteria. Hasson & Wong are also producing some excellent FUE work as of late. Dr. Konior in Chicago is stellar. Check out examples of their work, speak to their patients, lots of good resources on this and other hair forum sites. Good luck to you.
  23. Vancouver area patient in his early 40’s. Above average donor hair, fine to medium in texture. Dr. Hasson and team transplanted 7410 grafts front to crown via FUT. 2094 were single hair grafts, 4955 were doubles and 361 were 3-4 hair grafts. These photos were taken 1-year post-op.
  24. Dr. Hasson has just the other day recommended my brother to take the Finasteride paste, or given the option vs. the pill. So it appears they do still offer it?
  25. Thanks, I have started Rogaine two weeks ago now, with Belgravia Hair Clinik. A word about Belgravia though. I didn't feel comfortable there at all. The only reason I choose their treatment is because that way I have a professional to go to should anything go wrong or should I have any issues, rather than having to pay 200 Pounds every time for a dermatologist appointment. If anyone cares I can go into further detail about my experience there. As for the treatment, I'm now using a minoxidil solution which they apparently somehow produce themselves, which has Caffeine added to it. And with that a special shampoo which also appears to be their own product. I have also realized now that I have a lot of dandruff. This is something I never really understood. I never knew what kind of hair I had. For example if you look at shampoo bottles it says this is for dry hair or what not. I still can't tell if my hair is dry or what. I used to think I had no dandruff, I thought dandruff implied having flakes coming out of your hair. I never had that. But during one dermatologist consultation I was told I had a lot of build up and dandruff on my skin. And in hindsight that does make sense, my scalp actually is always itchy, not to the point that it drives me mad but I catch myself scratching myself a lot and I never see other people do that. During the consultation I was also shown a magnification of my skin on top which showed a lot of bloody nicks. So it's evident I scratch myself a lot. I actually have an identical twin who went for a consultation somewhere else where he was told that (and my brother is in the same situation as I) this actually isn't male pattern baldness but there's just too much buildup and the hair can't develop. We don't really know if we should believe that. He also went for a consultation with Dr. Hasson who right away said this was MPB and prescribed Finasteride. So I'm confused about the different diagnoses.
