Advice for Hair Loss Sufferers Considering Hair Transplant Surgery

My Story

  1. I'm trying to figure out where I should go from here. Had my first transplant at 18 or 19 years old. I had an accident when I was 11 that left me with a significant scar on my scalp that always bothered me. One night I saw an infomercial for hair transplants and thought maybe they could transplant hair into the scar. I had a consultation and the Dr. and he said he could do it. I understood nothing about hair transplants and had no idea what I was getting into. The first procedure was around 700 grafts. The doctor not only transplanted into the scar but also transplanted into the temple area's and created a new hairline to help cover the scar. The results were not good, the first person to see me with my hat off said, "God, gave you a wierd hairline." I was devastated and went back to the doctor to see what could be done. He said we just need to fill it in with more hair. I was desperate and so I did it. I ended up doing 3 procedures with this doctor from the the age of 19-22. I honestly though it was going to be one procedure. After the third procedure grew in I finally knew it was only getting worse. I didn't know it but every procedure was making the situation worse. I was no longer concerned about the scar but now my new hairline. There were odd angled hairs, pitting, multiple hair grafts, it looked like doll hair. I posted my story on a website and was told to go see some other doctors, to get their opinions on my situation. I went to Hasson and Wong and also Shapiro. They said it was criminal what was done to me, and all the doctors thought my best bet was to cut the entire hairline out with a resection, and then come back in and create a new hairline to cover the scar from the resection. This path terrified me. Then I was told that we could possibly use FUE to remove the hairs from the hairline. I choose the FUE route, which in retrospect was a mistake. I've been through 3 FUE procedures to remove the hairline, and just last year I had another FUT procedure to help soften and bolster the hairline. So where I'm at now. I've lost a lot of hair, a Norwood five for sure, maybe a 6 or 7. There are still hairs from the old hairline that need to be removed, still have some pitting, and multiple hair grafts that I'd like to get rid of, my crown is mostly bald, I have no more laxity, so strip procedures are done. I have some donor left if I go the FUE route, been estimated somewhere between 3,000 to 4,000 available. So what I've been thinking is I have two paths to choose from. More transplants till I use up my donor, and pray the Proscar allows me to keep what I have, or I could shave it all off, get SMP into the scar, and hope I could get comfortable with it. I've visited a few doctors and SMP practioners and I get different opinions. I'm really uncertain what to do. I get concerned that if I keep losing hair I simply wont have enough donor to keep up with the hairloss. The shaving scares me because of the strip scar, and pitting I have in hairline, that would be exposed if I shave. So I'm just trying to figure what I should do and hoping to find some feedback. I'm working on getting some good photos.
  2. Vancouver-area patient in his late 20’s. Dr. Hasson and team transplanted 5886 grafts front to back via FUT. 2171 were single hair grafts, 3584 were doubles, and 131 were 3-4’s. With some hair styling product in his hair, these photos were taken approximately 11 months post-op. *At the time of his procedure we were experiencing with a white background, we have since gone back to blue. Apologies for the difference.
  3. thank you. Dr. Nadimi specified 1500-2000 for high density frontal hairline restoration, and then about 1500 for the crown. i'm not sure how much further my hair loss will continue tbh. Mike from Hasson and Wong said its hard to tell what i am on the norwood scale, but it's on the low side i believe. But a 3000-3500 graft procedure i can live with ideally. I'm not sure how that will translate to reality tho.
  4. Hello all, Been a lurker to not just this forum, but a few others (including reddit) and decided to join this one and create a post. So a little about me (please bare with me lol). I'm 33 now, Back when I was about 23, I believe, the girl who used to cut my hair pointed out that I had a thin spot on my crown. The reason she pointed it out, besides the fact that she was a family friend, is that she always knew me to have very thick, very coarse hair. I still sorta do. I hopped on rogaine not too far after that, and then upped the ante by going on finasteride, or propecia (it's now generic finasteride that i'm taking currently), when I noticed that my hairline was beginning to weaken, which was around 26-27. Was only on it for maybe 3 years, when I got off of it (was expensive before i found out i could get generic for a fraction of the cost). All in all, I've been back on it for well over a year now. Despite my proactivity in my fight back for hairloss, I'm slowly losing the battle and am looking to buy time. I've been exploring and researching hair transplants for a few years now. Prob since 2015. I've seen some absolute works of art, I've also seen the absolute worst surgeries imaginable, but what my research has concluded is that this is something you absolutely MUST do your homework on, and that you really only want the best in the field to do the work. It wasn't until recently that I decided to take it a step further and get consultations, and I've limited it to just right now. Hasson and Wong, and Chicago Hair Institute. I've had 2 online consults with hasson and wong, with a guy named mike over a span of 2 years, the last one being last week. Been interested in Dr. Hasson for as long as I"ve been doing research. Both consults, not much has changed in the recommendation of 3000 grafts to fill in hairline and crown, but I never pulled the trigger because well, i never thought it would get worse over the long term and my loss has pretty much been stable (and yknow, MONEY). But as of recently, i was picked up by reputable talent agency on the east coast, and given the unfortunate circumstances of vanity and the nature of the industry, i've been extremely critical of my friends on the top of my head. After doing more research, and discovering the talents of Dr. Konior, (as well as the lack of availability from what I've seen in these forums), I decided to send in my photos to the Chicago Hair institute. There was a page on the site that was for out of town patients, and they care about discreetness and a timeline as to when i could wear a hat and go home, and that spoke volumes to me as I'd really like to be as discreet as humanly possible. I was contacted by Dr. Nadimi, who gave me essentially the same graft estimate that H&W gave me, and I'll be booking a facetime consultation with her coming up. I'll show photos of my situation as well, but I'm curious as to anyone's dealings with Dr. Nadimi. From what I've experienced and understand so far, is that she's worked under and been trained by Konior, and that she's all business. And that her quality of work is good, but there's not much info on her results, in the regard that there are volumes on Koniors work. Right now, she's the front runner given her locale (my uncle lives 8 miles from the clinic, so i can ask to stay with him), and that she also emailed me directly. That truly impressed me TBH. Konior is booked over a year out, and i want to get this done sooner rather than later. Any and all info would be great!
  5. I haven't had a procedure with Dr. Hasson but I plan to in the coming months. I did have a consultation with him in September. He was personable, had a good sense of humour, very knowledgeable, had an artistic eye, and absolutely no-baloney. He knows what he's talking about and does not over-promise. Again, I haven't had a procedure with him, but meeting him grounded my expectations and gave me confidence in him.
  6. Im a patient of Dr. Hasson, both him and his entire team are exceptional and I have nothing but great things to say about them, my current results are shown towards the bottom of the page on the link below, and I’m blown away by the transformation and the difference he’s made to my life. I’ve had 4 procedures with him, below is my last porcedure
  7. Hello All, I am considering doing a 2nd procedure, using FUT. Specifically, I am looking at doing it with Dr. Victor Hasson (from Hasson & Wong) in Vancouver. Looking at getting about 1500-2000 grafts. Can anyone comment on their experience on Dr. Hasson, the clinic or what they've heard? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!
  8. Hey friends! I'm looking to schedule a HT with Dr. Hasson in a few months (I've already had a consultation with him). The thing is that I can't take a lot of time off of work. I'm curious how many days you guys have had pain and inflated faces. I would love to hear all about your own post-op experiences, or any advice you may have!
  9. Hey friends! I'm looking to schedule a HT with Dr. Hasson in a few months (I've already had a consultation with him). The thing is that I can't take a lot of time off of work. 10. Yeah but a hair transplant doctor who has cut out and sewn or stapled up 100's if not 1000's of patients scalps seems to have great grasp on how to perform the procedure. I'm considering Dr. Wong/Hasson because of their history of great scars.
  11. Id be curious, who that's had a Depp transplant or a Hasson & Wong, or Dr. Nadimi, how do they implant their grafts into the recipient?
  12. Head to North America. Dr. Gabel is on the West Coast in Portland, Oregon and Hasson & Wong in Vancouver, those are elite surgeons easily accessible from Australia in a single non-stop plane ride.
  13. I took an interest in Dutchie’s case as I was researching Dr. Hasson before ultimately selecting him as my surgeon. Dutchie was beyond NW5 @Mick50. It would be generous to call him NW6. Here are pre/post op pics from Dr Hasson, along with Dutchie’s own pics. Dutchie’s first pic is from1 month post op. His second was taken sometime between 6 and 12 months, definitely before the final result. Maybe someone else remembers when. At the time, I didn’t assess this as a surgical failure by Dr Hasson. It looked like the grafts grew and covered as much as one can reasonably expect with 4200 light-colored grafts spread out over a very large and nearly entirely bald head. Perhaps Dr Hasson failed to properly set Dutchie’s expectations, or perhaps Dutchie may have heard what he wanted to hear during the consultation, but IMO, the result is what one would expect. He has very light hair, a very large dome and was very bald. Hasson could have put twice as many (8400) grafts in the recipient area and still not achieved full illusion of density throughout. Hopefully it progressed somewhat and Dutchie is happy with it.
  14. Great results, thanks for updating us with your progress. Dr. Hasson, has another home run.
  15. SammyD, Shaving the whole head is not required in a case such as this. In most cases, the top is shaved and the sides and back are not. Many European patients and especially Italians allow Dr. Hasson to shave the whole head which in some cases he prefers. This patient was not concerned with showing the staples and incision either so he allowed it. I’ve seen some patients with a good comb-over and if there is sufficient hair on the side to swing over, we’ll simply shave the top and leave the hair to comb over on the sides/top to remain to use as a camouflage. For FUE it may be a little trickier and each case may be different. For FUT there can be an area above the incision with good density that will allow the comb-over. For FUE, we may need to go into that area with the harvest so it could potentially limit the amount of comb-over hair that can remain unshaved. However, with FUE the need to keep the hair longer on the sides and back to hide the incision does not apply and the complete shave with FUE is often a better look than with FUT. Without an in-depth look, it is hard to say what we can do in your case. I would come to the clinic with the comb-over in mind and we can determine upon examination which option would be best and shave accordingly right before the procedure. In the end, I don’t think redness will be a big factor for you and your post-op may be easier than you anticipate.
  16. Hi, Is shaving the whole head required to perform the operation with Dr. Hasson? I am considering an operation with him but concern about my appearance for the next few weeks post operations. Would be better if I can keep my existing hair and then do a comb over to hide the red recepient area
  17. I am looking to get an FUE surgery done. After talking to 5 or 6 clinic, I was told I would need about 3500 graft. I have narrowed down to Dr. Diep or Dr. Hasson. Any thoughts or recommendation from anyone regarding these 2 doctors? During the process, I have also considered and had discussion with Shapiro, Ranior, Rahal.
  18. Thanks, Melvin. Yes, I intend on meeting with all of those NYC doctors. I guess my question was looking for people's subjective opinions of the best, most artistically rendered hairlines. Dr. Feriduni in Belgium, or Hasson & Wong in Vancouver, for example. I'd be willing to travel if it might result in a more natural-looking outcome.
  19. This Vancouver area patient in his mid-30’s came to the clinic to address his receded hairline and thinning frontal zone. Dr. Hasson and team used 2575 grafts extracted via FUE to restore the area and achieve the desired result. 302 were single hair grafts, 2017 were doubles and 256 were 3-4 hair grafts. These photos were taken just shy of 1 year post-op. *At the time of his procedure we were experimenting with a white background, we have since gone back to blue. Apologies for the difference.
  20. As I mentioned some time ago, when I run across a previous post from a few years back with broken links, I will try and repost the pics. Here is such a case that I'm re-presenting. This patient came to Vancouver from Israel to have a procedure following in the footsteps of his son who had previously undergone a successful procedure with Dr. Wong a few years earlier. Dr. Wong and team transplanted 5496 Grafts in one session via FUT. 1562 were single hair grafts, 3317 were double and 617 were 3-4 hair grafts. The goal was to reconstruct the hairline, frontal zone and mid-scalp working back as far as possible. With a sufficient yield, some crown coverage would be possible and in this case, it was achieved. The result shown is only 7.5 months post-op. This patient is very happy and a strong advocate for the clinic. If you are in Israel and considering a hair transplant procedure with Hasson and Wong and would like to speak with this patient about his experience, get in touch with me and we'll connect you.
  21. Hi all, I plan to get an FUE procedure in December of this year, and I'm trying to do my research on possible surgeons. I'll travel anywhere in the United States but am based in upstate NY. I've gotten in touch with the clinics of Dr. Diep, Konior, and Hasson & Wong. Here's my history. I previously had an HUT procedure back in 2013 from an in-network surgeon in Asia. At the time I was Type IVA, with frontal forelock. From what I recall I received around 2000 grafts and had decent results. Since then I have lost more hair. I use artificial hair fibers (Caboki) to compensate for my thinned out hair. I'm convinced myself to get another transplant this year, but have a few concerns. First, I'm a migrainer and felt that the frequency and intensity of my headaches worsened after my first transplant. Is there any research on the relationship between hair transplants and headaches? Anyway, I'm looking to avoid similar issues this time around. Second, although I'm leaning towards FUE, I'm not sure that it is the way to go. My previous scar is not that bad, and I do not want to shave my head. So, in short, any advice welcome on recommended surgeons to look up, headaches, fut vs fue... Thanks for your help. -A
  22. @jj51702 thank you! Regarding post-op care, Dr. Hasson has a pretty simple protocol . They sent me home with a neck pillow, a pillow case cover, pain tablets for 2-3 days, one week of antibiotics, a couple of sleeping pills, a bottle of herbal shampoo, and a loose fitting baseball hat that I wore out the door. I went back to clinic for the first washing. Unfortunately I never got to use the herbal shampoo. I forgot it was in my carry-on going through airport security and it was confiscated. I had to use baby shampoo instead. The instructions were to pat it on lightly on days 2-5 and then use medium fingertip pressure on days 5-7. In hindsight, I was too gentle with the washing during the first week. At one week I soaked the scabs with mineral oil and then lightly massaged them off in the shower. I repeated that 2-3 times that day until most of the scabs were gone. From then on I used regular shampoo with with more pressure.
  23. Hello Forum. This is my first post. I had an FUT with Dr. Hasson in March 2018. 5113 Grafts, of which approximately 2/3 went into the front and 1/3 into the crown. I'm submitting some photos of the journey and my results so far. Here are the pre-op pics. Sorry, I don't have any pre-op pics of the crown area.
  24. I get this question a lot and to be honest, lists are always difficult to compile, because hairline design has a lot to do with the artistry of a surgeon. There are so many surgeons that I see providing excellent results, that it is hard to choose one let alone three. Also, the hairline designs that I like you may not like as much, it's very subjective. In North America, there is Dr. Konoir, Dr. Rahal, Hasson and Wong, Dr. Cooley, Dr. Diep, Dr. Gabel, just to name a few.
  25. hdude46, The doctors have not been big fans of Rogaine over the years. While its impact can vary from patient to patient, for many who have used it we see some instability of the tissue. Without going into great detail, it can make the procedure more difficult and create some limitations. It has been shown to affect the collagen and some premature facial aging can also occur. In the end, Dr. Hasson would likely not feel the benefit is warranted versus the potential negative effects on the tissue in this case.
