Advice for Hair Loss Sufferers Considering Hair Transplant Surgery

  1. Hey @AftermathYou work for Dr. Hasson at all? You promote him on these forums so I’m just wondering Before someone pays the price is there any info we should Know. When he saw some of the bad work from fario did you end up removing some of it?
  2. You should stay the F away from LA. Love the city but You shouldn’t trust any doctor here to be able to help you out. Mostly nothing but unethical scum bags. Look for Dr. Gabel in Oregon or hasson/Wong up in Canada both 2 hour flights, less time than being stuck on the 405 during rush hour. This place is a cesspool of hacks.
  3. You cannot go wrong with Dr. Hasson. He is an excellent hair transplant surgeon. If you already have a scar in donor area and have no plans on shaving head. FUT has some real benefits over FUE in some cases. It does not thin out the entire donor area like FUE can. You do not have to shave down donor area to do procedure making it easier to camouflage post operatively. Also in my opinion it has a 5-10% higher survival rate.
  4. I know there are a ton of threads debating FUT vs. FUE, and they have been very helpful. But I was hoping to get some specific feedback on my situation. My current plan is to schedule an FUT procedure with Hasson & Wong (Dr. Hasson, specifically). I am choosing FUT over FUE solely due to the cost savings, but I am having second thoughts about whether I'm making a smart decision by opting for the more invasive FUT procedure simply to save money. Here is my situation: Basic Profile: Frontal hair loss and thinning hairline. H&W has suggested 3,000 grafts to restore hairline and densely pack thinning frontal and temple areas. Both FUT and FUE options are available. Scarring from FUT is not an issue or consideration for me due to an existing scar on the back of my head that prevents me from keeping my hair very short (scar is from old injury - not a prior transplant). I have plenty of donor hair to accommodate current and future transplant needs, so that's not an issue or consideration here either. The results of FUT and FUE will be roughly the same for me (this is what H&W has told me). Based on similar H&W case studies and prior results, I believe I will get good results with either method, and if anything, may get slightly better results with FUT, at least based on my personal assessment of similar H&W case studies and their past published case results. Cost Difference: FUE = $23,000 USD; FUT =$13,000 USD. So we're talking about a $10,000 USD cost savings by going with FUT. My Quandary: Is submitting to a more invasive FUT procedure worth saving $10,000? I feel like $10,000 is a lot of money to save by opting for FUT, but is it stupid to go the FUT route just to save money? Am I being ridiculous? I'm not as big of a pussy as I sound like, but I certainly don't want to be in a lot of post-op pain or discomfort that I could have avoided by shelling out an extra $10,000. Is there anyone who has had both types of procedures that could weigh in on their post-op experience? Any major differences in post-op pain/discomfort? Any other issues that I should consider that aren't addressed above? Basically, am I being an idiot for going the FUT route just to save money? $10,000 isn't going to make or break me, but it's still a lot of money no matter how you slice it. Any thoughts are appreciated.
  5. To be honest, you have chosen two excellent surgeons who are very similar. Both are known for dense packing, and creating natural hairlines. I don't think you can really differentiate between their skill, for me it would come down to other factors like price, convenience etc. Have you submitted consultations with both? Dr. Rahal https://www.hairlosslearningcenter.org/hair-restoration-physicians/DoctorDetail/Dr-H-Rahal/376 Dr. Hasson https://www.hairlosslearningcenter.org/hair-restoration-physicians/DoctorDetail/Dr-Victor-Hasson-/9
  6. Hello, After struggling with hair loss and its related depression and anxiety, i've finally decided to overcome my fear and do something about it. As i am located in Canada, i'm currently choosing between Dr. Hasson and Dr. Rahal, and while i know those two are top surgeons with very good results, i desperately need your help in making the decision. I suffer from hair loss in the frontal area (Norwood 3) and given it is affecting the hairline, i need your feedback especially for the below criteria: 1. hair line re-construction and artistry 2. hair transplant and how natural the outcomes are in regards to awkward hair angles, stubby thick grafts in the hair line......etc 3. graft survival and density. 4. Actual results vs. the patients' expectations/doctors promise during the consultation. I am so glad i discovered this forum as i have been researching for over a year, and choosing a dr. seems to overwhelming. i am attaching my pictures and hoping people who had similar hairloss and procedures with any of the above doctors would reach out to me with their experience as well. Thank you so much
  7. @pkipling I had a consultation in August 2019 with @H & W Doug. Great guy and a lot of good information. This is when my hair was losing ground and at its lowest since having a great response. He said I could do either FUT or FUE. 3000+ grafts, rebuild the frontal 1/3, etc... He also had Dr. Hasson take a look at my pics and story. I feel very comfortable with H&W and the sort of results, patient care, and procedures they conduct. I also had an in-person consultation with Dr Bloxham around the same time. He recommended strip, again in the 2500-3000 ball park. Another good surgeon. It's just tough, because I don't want to get surgery if I don't have too, but the thought of killer results is always in the back of my head. I could look amazing at the wedding, or risk it hoping things level out with my cyclical shedding.
  8. 1) If you're losing your hair, you should be on finasteride. For me it's an open and shut case. Dr. Arika mentioned that she strongly urges all hair transplant candidates to get on finasteride and stabilize before undergoing surgery. Doing so helps minimize shock loss. If you're not taking finasteride, hairs that were already susceptible to miniaturization might not recover fully after the surgery. 2) Having been through a surgery, I have no idea how you'd get a massage during the process. I think a round of PRP would be helpful though. 3) I'm about a week post op, and unless you'd undergone a mega session I see no reason why you'd need to be so closely monitored. Just follow the doctor's post op instructions to the letter, and you should be fine. I would, however, allow myself 2-3 days post op before jumping back on an international flight. The dry air in the cabin and change in air pressure is uncomfortable when your head and forehead are swollen due to the local anesthetic. Furthermore, with over head bins opening and closing you're more likely to sustain damage to your grafts. My advice would be to hunker down in a hotel room, spray the saline solution by the clock, take your meds, do the massages and keep your head uncovered. 4) You are not long gone. I've seen miracles worked on the forum. It all depends on your expectations. Are you going to have a full head of hair like you did at 18? Absolutely not. Is your journey going to be expensive? Probably. Get on finasteride, stabilize and in the meantime plan out your surgery. Do a few consultations, get a feel for what various doctors are recommending and then take the plunge. I wish I'd done mine sooner. 5) Theoretically, the transplanted hair shouldn't fall out, but as in life YMMV. In your case, most doctors will recommend FUT. You'll probably need 2 surgeries to get you where you want to be. Pretty sure the Eugenix team will recommend the DHT method because that's what they specialize in, but you should set up an appointment to ask them yourself. I would get several opinions and then make the most informed decision possible. 6) Yes, and it's not as big a deal as you think. It soon becomes a habit. 7) I agree with you here. I do, however, feel that you have to look at where the patient starts. Dense coverage is difficult to achieve in a NW5-6. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I think you could make the same arguments for just about every surgeon on this forum with the exception perhaps being Hasson and Wong. You'll pay 5-6x the price though. I had a great experience with Eugenix, but I'm not fully endorsing them until I see my final result. You need to get on finasteride, so you'll have a chance to wait and see. 9) Dr Arika and Dr. Pradeep do not follow each other around. They go where the surgeries are. Their staff is adept at cluster scheduling, so the doctors aren't moving day to day. Dr. Arika said she performs 1 and at the max 2 surgeries per day (if they're smaller procedures). She is a workaholic and enjoys doing 15 days or more in a row. She said that when she does lots of surgeries she gets into a groove. I asked her this specific question during my consultation. She mentioned that in December they only took 1 day off because there was so much demand. I wouldn't worry about doctor fatigue. 10) The price didn't increase. They added a new tier. The new tier has Dr. Arika doing the hairline implantation herself. Everything else remains the same. Let me know if you have further questions!
  9. Hi HT Community - While I have been on this forum for quite some time and done a lot of research, I'd like to know everyone's experiences with getting FUT. I am contemplating getting a HT sometime this year, possibly with Dr. Hasson, but to be honest it makes me nervous. I've seen great scars, I've seen bad scars. I tend to heal well. Can you please share your experience with FUT and things like: Do you regret getting FUT? How's the scar? How was the recovery? Do you feel good about the results? How is your laxity? (before and after) Appreciate all the input in advance.
  10. Are you on any medication to prevent further hair loss? I would take a look at Dr. Gabel, Hasson and Wong just to name a few.
  11. After much delay, my apologies, here is my story, finally. I had a disappointing hair transplant with Dr. Baubac of Alvi Armani a couple of years ago. I am going to keep this short and simple. Stats: NW2-3, allegedly 2,500 FUE grafts at Beverly Hills office. (Dislcaimer: I am not an expert and the following are just my personal opinions) The good: Price was somewhat negotiable Procedure and experience was comfortable The bad: Poor yield Uneven hairline Poor hair angulation of hair that did yield Patchy, overharvested donor area Scalp fibrosis in transplant area, resulting in raised scalp Nobody from patient care or Alvi Armani contacted me post op! A non-disclosure agreement (NDA) was suddenly provided to me on the morning of my surgery. Who would back out this close to a surgery if they didn't like what was in the NDA, especially if they travelled from out of town? Seems unfair to me. 1. Poor yield Two years post op. 2. Uneven hairline I can't believe this would happen. The new hairline was initially felt-marked in (as is standard practice with all HT surgeons), seemingly quickly. I noticed the assymetry immediately post op and told the nurse. She dismissed it as being due to swelling. Well, after all the swelling had gone down, the assymetry remained. In the following photo, I put in a line to show the uneven temples. However, the assymetry begins before the temples. This was taken a few days post op. The assymetry is more noticeable in real life and especially at certain angles. 3. Poor angulation It's difficult at times to style the hairline, as it seems the angulation is all over the place and the cowlick that I had was not transplanted out, which is what Hasson and Wong say is the norm for a good transplant. As a side note, there is one transplant that has four or five hairs coming out of one hole and is noticeable close up. Very unnatural looking. The following photo is taken in the morning (obvious bed head), but I can't find a better photo that shows the bad angulation. I'll see about taking a macro photo. 4. Patchy, overharvested areas of donor area With a number 2 or 3 buzz, the donor area reveals patches that you can see in certain lighting/angle situations. Even at the time of the surgery, I felt the harvesting was rather quickly done. PHOTOS TO COME 5. Scalp fibrosis in transplant area, resulting in raised scalp Not sure if other transplantees know what I am talking about here, but it's like there is this raised, slightly hardened tissue in the transplant area that actually raises the scalp. It's lumpy, probably due to deep tissue scarring or something. PHOTOS TO COME (However, it may be difficult ot show this) 6. Nobody from patient care or Alvi Armani contacted me post op! What more needs to be said? 7. A non-disclosure agreement (NDA) was suddenly provided to me on the morning of my surgery. Who would back out this close to a surgery if they didn't like what was in the NDA, especially if they travelled from out of town? Seems unfair to me. Some highlights from the surprise Armani NDA. Conclusion: I asked Dr. Baubac for a refund and they refused. Instead, they offered to do the transplant again (at no cost to me), to which I declined. Baubac biz card that I received while at his office:
  12. Vancouver area patient in his mid 30’s bothered by his receding hairline. He tried PRP but was not happy with its minimal at best results. Dr. Hasson and team used 4,500 grafts via FUE to rebuild a new lower hairline and frontal zone blending into the mid-scalp. 350 singles were used in the hairline, 3182 were double hair grafts and 968 were 3-4 hair grafts. His donor hair was good with high density and average texture. These photos were taken 9 months post-op.
  13. @Melvin-Moderator I don’t know yet if I’m happy with my surgery because I’m still waiting for the results. Also, I’m not affiliated with any of these Doctors and in the case of Dr. Bruno Ferreira, Dr. Ximena and Dr. Demirsoy (not a fan but he is cheap) I’m not even their patient and recommend them solely based on price/technique vs results here in this forum. I think there better Doctors than the ones I’m recommending here but I just don’t think there are better Doctors charging less. Please correct me if I am wrong as myself and a lot of people surely will appreciate knowing about other best value Doctors. In 2008 when I had surgery with Dr. Rahal I spent years recommending him and Hasson&Wong constantly because they had the best results in this forum and were cheaper than many US Doctors, in those days no moderator said I was coming off as salesman. I guess things have changed since those days but I will stand by my comments until I am proven wrong and hope you can allow me to continue to recommend best value Doctors that I believe can achieve a great results and not make us pay an arm and a leg for them. If you or any one else disagrees with me, that’s great, so let me know which Doctors you guys think is doing amazing surgeries with great results at 2.5€/grafts or less because while knowing who’s the Elite is important it’s also important to know who does the surgery like the Elite with results on the same level of the Elite but charging us much less. I would really appreciate it if you and more members could contribute with the prices and the techniques of the Doctors you think can achieve good results at more affordable prices (minimum wage in Portugal is 600USD/month so here we are all very much geared towards value for money).
  14. Hi guys! Im new here in this great community, but definitely not new to hairloss stuff. I already had a fair research with a help of this forum and users experiences, as part of my journey to my (soon) HT. I will tell my story in short. Im 30, and been suffer from hairloss for about 10 years. There are no words to describe how this has been effecting my life, Im pretty sure more than almost anybody else here. I always have been concern with my look to a level of obsession, and in some point I realized I have BDD (body dysmorphic disorder) , Started as a teenager, got in depression cause I didnt like my appearance. But with time I grew up nice and was very pleased, till hairloss kicked in. I can actually remember the very day it started lol, I noticed my temples receded a tiny bit, and got panicked immediately. and from that point, it was doomed. I became obssesed with my hairloss 24/7, it increased my overall bdd to a new levels. I immediately jump on meds, but they didnt stop it, dont know if they did anything but I just kept taking them. with the years hairloss kept advancing slow but steady - major temple recession, front hairline receded a bit, and thinning on top. I realize in some point that HT is my only option to get my hair back and actually get my life back, and did a research 2 years ago and consultation with both Bisanga and Lupanzula, which both were great, but I ended up deciding to postpone it for several reasons. And now it is the time for sure. So, to the point, I need your help and opinions on any matter here that can help me get the best that I can. I added pics below. My goal is to restore my hairline and temples - This is the most important for me, I have to have a good frame, and preferable good density in hairline and behind it. I want to lower a bit the hairline and even consider to reconstruct the temples points a bit. As about the procedure type - I thought Im going for FUE all the time, but after reading in this forum Im not so sure. I read alot of advantages for FUT - you can get more grafts from your donor, the yield is higher, and overall better chance for more quality results, is that true? Yes of course there is a scar, but first Im not going to shave my head never in my life. I do shave the back and sides closer than the top of course, but not on zero guard, so im not sure how much of a problem it will be. Also, the price is lower, which is a plus, but I want to say here that generally price is only second priority for me. Second, Im still not sure which doctor to choose. Im from middle east, and the best for me would be someone from Europe (I dont even consider turkey). currently in my list are Bisanga - great surgeon, care about his patients, I already had consultation with him in the past and I got very good impression. but he specialize mainly on FUE, and if I decided on FUT I guess there are better options? Also, is his type of work considered dense packing? Im not sure. I would love to get good density in the front. De Freitas - which has amazing results, but im not sure about waiting list, does someone here knows what to expect? and also, I heard that communication is problematic since he speaks spanish. I dont know, but it seems like an issue to me. Feriduni - great doctor as well. but most of his cases look too conservative to me. and he is also specialize on FUE (?) what you think? Dr.Maras from HDC, cyprus - He is a great, reputable surgeon, with great results. And although he is recommended doctor here, I dont see many posts about him, or even mentions, when people here talk about the best doctors. I wonder why is that, wouldnt you consider him in the same level as the other top tier doctors in this list? Im not sure about his specialty in FUT though. But the good thing is his clinic very close to me, and actually has representation in my country. Hattingen - I heard about this clinic here, and saw some good results posted by them, but not alot of patient results. I do read many opinions of people praising this clinic, but I really cant tell I guess... The rest of the options are in US/Canada. I mean, I really hate flights, and long flights to canada or US seem like nightmare for me. Im not afraid of flights, Im just kind of big guy and it's really uncomfortable for me to sit there for so many hours. But since I cant compromise on the outcome even a bit, I guess I would have to take them into account as well. in my list: Dr Hasson from H&W - I read so many great things about Hasson. Looked for lots of patients posted results. not one negative review, and almost all are amazing, and also lots of cases similar to mine, with outcome I would kill for. I think he is actually number one for me in the list, since he does great FUT as well as FUE. The only problem is the distance about 13 hours flight. What do you think? would you fly so far for this? it really bothers me... and what if, god forbids, I will need a touch up or something? those flights can be very inconvenient. Im not even talking about frontal consultation, which Im not sure if they require it before the procedure. Dr.Konior - also great doctor as I read hear and some other places, but I really know less about him than the others. Im still in the research phase so I will get some more knowledge on those doctors and other that come up. This list is not closed at all, I would be happy to hear any (honest) opinion or suggestion. I would appreciate any response, and you can be sure that I will share with you my experience, when it happen, hopefully soon. Pics attached look really bad when it is not styled and combed... but I need to show them.
  15. Don’t take this the wrong way at all man as you say you’ve done research but trust me when I tell you that you haven’t done enough research. It sounds like you live in Southern California and you are trying to find the best possible option that doesn’t require you hopping on a plane. That is a big mistake. Take it from me, a guy who has made that mistake. What I’m saying has nothing against the recommended California surgeons that you consulted with but you need to also reach out to other top North American doctors and ask them for results with guys that have similar hair texture as you. You should also do in person consultations with the doctors you consult with whose work you like even if it requires flying out to them to see who you are most comfortable with and trust your gut instinct on that whether it ends up being a California doctor or one somewhere else. You don’t want to regret limiting yourself to location later on. Also to answer your original question about wait times, I’m not sure you should judge a place by wait times. There is a guy here , legends007, who just last year was able I think on three weeks notice to squeeze in an appointment with Dr. Hasson and has great results. Does that mean Dr. Hasson is not a quality doctor because he had a sudden opening? Of course not. In any case, be smart and I wish you good luck with whatever you do.
  16. FUT or FUE, that is an important question. I think with each of those options you will head to different doctors. For FUT: In US I would go for Konior, I think he is obviously elite. Canada I think Wong is successful with that more than Dr.Hasson. Europe I do really really like Hattingen, their results with FUT is wow and they barely go further than 6K in total, only one bad FUT result I've seen from them. couple of dozen brilliant ones at least. FUE: I think there are some good surgeons in Turkey like Cinik, there is also another guy but I don't remember his name, but was known to be very conservative with number of grafts he do. Rarely mega sessions. Like Diep too. Belgium has great surgeons like Devroye & Bisanga Don't like Hattingen or H&W as FUE surgeons, they are good but they aren't as standout as they are in FUT But I agree with @JayLDD, FUT is the best way for what you want.
  17. This is a beautiful result. I really love the design of your new hairline. That peak in the middle is sweet as it helps lower the overall appearance of your hairline. That's what I would like to do when I pull the trigger. I was wondering how much input you had in the design of your new hairline? Was the widows peak your idea or did Dr. Hasson suggest it?
  18. Is it possible to post photos for thé temple points? This is what I’m getting with Dr. Wong. I’m having a hard time deciding between Dr. Hasson or Wong. But according to the coordinator, Dr. wong is better at the temporal points
  19. This Vancouver area patient in her mid-20’s came to Hasson & Wong hoping to improve her less than desirable hairline height and temple recession. With good donor hair density, above-average scalp laxity and no desire to shave her head in the future, FUT was chosen as the method of extraction. Dr. Wong and his team successfully harvested 2399 grafts to lower her hairline and address the temple recession to a create a more feminine looking framing. 663 grafts were single hair grafts, 1351 were doubles and 385 were multi-hair grafts. These photos were taken 11 months post-op
  20. You are a very difficult case, before you decide to have surgery ask yourself this, will a bad result bother you more than your hair loss? Because after you have surgery you will NEVER be able to return to being a normal bald guy. That said, I think you should definitely consider strip first, and I don't think you've searched our forum enough if you think there aren't a lot of hasson and wong reviews. I think they have a ton of reviews on here and examples of cases like yours. Also, I think $12 a graft for Konior is false. Last time I checked he was around $10 for FUE and $8 for FUT. I suggest submitting online consultations to each of these surgeons here for the actual price. Dr. Pak, works with Rassman who actually trained Dr. Diep, as for gut feelings I think you should always choose a surgeon you trust and have faith in, I chose Diep, and so did one of my best friends, and his results at 4 months look amazing. https://www.hairtransplantnetwork.com/Consult-a-Physician/hair-transplant-surgeons.asp?sr=HRN
  21. 1.5 to 2. If I am not wrong in the past dr. Hasson was taking himself 2.5 mg per day and his ex advisor, Joe, had some improvements raising the dose. But please remember Finasteride is a pharmaceutical, a doctor must check the patient and prescribe the right dosage.
  22. You’ve been given some great names. I’ll add hasson and wong, Dr. Gabel, Dr. Mohebi, Dr. Bloxham is in NY so definitely worth a visit. Most definitely True&Dorin as well. If I’m not mistaken the place you went to in Long Island had a sanitation worker performing surgery- this is why our community is so important. If you have any questions feel free to pm me anytime. Glad you found us were here to help. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.nydailynews.com/news/hair-raising-tale-deceit-article-1.176678%3foutputType=amp
  23. Dr.Hasson, Dr.Carlos Wesley & Dr.Konior - the current three posting the best "homerun" results in North America from what I can see of recent clinic and patient own postings. Dr.Rahal was in the mix previously for FUT but something seems slightly amiss about the feedback from Rahal recently. For large strip mega-sessions of 5,000 grafts or more like you'd need - I think Dr.Hasson seems to be a leader in this space in both grabbing as much hair in one session as possible and leaving a great scar. In Europe Hattigen Hair seem to be doing very big FUT cases too.
  24. Hair looks great and natural and Dr.Hasson did a great job on the front. Have you tried topical Fin??? - H&W are doing this now for Canadian patients and it seems to have all the benefits of oral fin with none/infinitely lower probabilty of sides (as it goes less systematic than oral fin). I'm presuming you got off Fin because of side issues? Perhaps trying this for a while could be an option to recover crown. Topical Fin is available in Europe from compounding pharmacies in Milan etc.. The full science isn't out yet on it but anecdotally clinics that have partnered with compounding pharmacies are seeing excellent efficacy in patients for which oral fin has presented a problem. Given emerging NW5 / 6 pattern. My gut for you would be to max out FUT for any further work, start scalp laxity exercises NOW and your FUT2 scar should be the same as you have now - FUT is obviously cheaper with poorer recovery time but it is undoubtedly the most conservative approach and leaves you in better shape for anything up the road that might be required which could be done with FUT/FUE. Not much has changed since 2010 and Dr.Hasson is STILL in the global ELITE doctor category - you know Top 3 or wherever you want to draw the line. If i was you I wouldn't be thinking of going anywhere else but back to that clinic. Like others have said Dr.Wong is the king of crowns so some combo of Hasson/Wong will be great.
