Advice for Hair Loss Sufferers Considering Hair Transplant Surgery

  1. Thanks Gatsby. I took Minoxidil for ~ 3 years nearly every day. I'd actually use the foam to style my hair a bit. In speaking with Dr. Hasson, his office actually suggests you stop Min before surgery and it seemed like they are generally averse towards using Min longterm. So, for now I've stopped entirely. I've gone back and forth with fin (did experience sides when I was using proscar cut into 1/4ths), but seem to have a good thing going right now where I'm using a slightly lesser dose (0.5mg) a few times a week and am seemingly stabilizing what I have left. I'd personally love to try the topical fin but it's not available in the US to my knowledge.
  2. Thank you for posting this excellent review, you sort of remind me of a legendary patient @Aftermath he also went to Dr. Hasson, I think you will be very satisfied in 12 months time. Please keep us updated on your progress.
  3. Thanks HTHope. Yes, I was pleased to go the FUE route. I had spoke with H&W Doug a few times over the phone and we thought ~4-5k total would make sense. Then meeting with Dr. Hasson we determined ~2500 up front was needed and then another 2-2500 in the crown. I don't recall ever getting a total # of donor supply grafts available to be honest, but the comments were that I have a good amount. Dr. Hasson may have mentioned a number but I really can't recall. I'll try to email them to see if I can find out. FWIW, I'm at the 4 month mark now (posting pics soon) and my donor looks / feels totally fine - literally no signs that any hair was taken out and it's still really full. Re: cost...yep. Hoping that the results are worth it. Based on the work H&W has churned out in the profiles I've seen on this forum, I felt comfortable paying what I did. Here are some donor pics post-surgery:
  4. Hi all, Just joined the forum to share my experience, but would also like to extend a special thanks to all those who have posted their experiences before me. As we all can relate, this process is brutally daunting and stressful, and I'm not sure I would have been able to pull the trigger without reading about and following along with some of the success stories on this site. Also a real shoutout to Melvin - you're a legend for maintaining the forum as you do. Seriously thanks for your effort. Personal Details: Age: Early 30's Location: US west coast Losing Hair since ~25 (diffuse thinning in crown / in front, but hoping to keep patch in middle to not go full NW6/7) - see pics below for pre-op pics Father experienced hairloss early and is NW6, but rest of old males in family have generally kept hair till late in life I have fine hair, but my donor area is solid. When Dr. Hasson met me his first words when combing through my donor area were "wow you must have had one hell of a head of hair when you were younger". I'm hoping this means I have plenty of donor for future sessions if needed, but am also hopeful this session allows me the "appearance of a full head of hair" for the foreseeable future. After extensive research and speaking with a few options, I decided H&W made the most sense for me. H&W Doug is a great steward of the office, and I really appreciated my talks with him throughout the process. HT Details: 2-day FUE Jan 8th, 9th 2020 4899 grafts (~9623 hairs), split: 2544 grafts (~4847 hairs) into front third Day 1 2355 grafts (~4776 hairs) into crown Day 2 I feel that there are enough reports of the office conditions and what the surgery days are like, but I'll re-iterate that I was at the office for 2 days for 12-14 hours each day, with breaks for lunch and dinner. My pics from pre and post-op are attached here. I have a solid album of pics since then, and will be compiling them and posting in this thread shortly. This week I hit Month 4 and while progress has been minimal, I'm feeling some decent stubble and am hopeful that the next few months will be positive. At the very least, I'm thankful the ugly-duckling phase is over. Any feedback / thoughts / questions are encouraged. Thanks!
  5. After what was done to me, I am so scared that I wouldn't even think of going to anyone other than the top internation surgeons for a repair. I am slowly trying to collect money but it might take me years. What do you think someone like Dr. Hasson and Wong or Dr. Konior would charge for a repair case? The recipient zone is badly destroyed too. So it's going to be a full repair including hairline. Do you have a very rough idea of the cost?
  6. Hello NYCFUE I did one hair transplant with Dr. Konior to repair a previous bad HT and i couldn´t choose better. It was FUT. In the recipient area after 3 days nobody could tell i had a HT. The scar is minimal, i use a 2 guard and is undetectable. He is very professional and makes a long term plan to the patient. We never know what we will need in the future... My choice was based in the fact that Dr. Konior can achieve good results with less grafts, he does only one patient per day and he is with you the entire surgery. Dr. Hasson is also one of the best surgeons in the world, so you will be in good hands and have a great result... If you have any question about my surgery just say.
  7. Take a look at another blonde member who had FUE with Dr. Hasson @Arminius
  8. I had a surgery in Michigan (terrible decision), which now requires a corrective surgery. I‘ve been debating between Dr. Hasson and Dr. Rahal for a corrective FUT surgery of 3500 grafts. I had a great consultation with his team but I‘ve read some mixed reviews of Rahal‘s results lately which makes me feel a little uneasy about moving forward with him. I‘ve searched the forums and other places thoroughly and I mostly see very impressive results, but I’m wondering if I should be concerned about moving forward with him as my choice. Have many of his patients required second surgeries to correct the first or are patients of his generally satisfied with one procedure of his? How is he when it comes to correcting other surgeons work? thanks
  9. They have the most experience, but definitely consult with other top docs like Dr. Bisanga, Hasson and Wong, Dr. Diep was my personal doctor, and my hair was similar to yours.
  10. Failures occur from both procedures, I think there is a common misconception that FUT is some how "fail-proof" in fact, some popular surgeons led the community to believe in this dogamatic view, which of course is a load of garbage. The skill, experience, and talent varies widely from surgeon to surgeon, as do their results. Now, I will contend that there is a real problem with 'black market' FUE performed by untrained technicians with no experience, however, high-quality surgeons such as Dr. Shapiro, Konior, Gabel, and Hasson and Wong have all admitted that FUE in their hands is just as good as FUT. So the question isn't about the surgical technique itself, it's about the person executing the technique. In the wrong hands, FUT and FUE can cause permanent damage to both the donor and recipient zones. There is no doubt that biases exist, and they exist on both sides, as previously mentioned there was a popular surgeon on here who vehemently attacked FUE and was very dogmatic in his approach. I think surgeons who perform both FUE and FUT on a consistent basis are a lot less bias and are willing to dive in to the advantages and disadvantages with both. Now, there are cases where FUT may be out of the question, and vice versa, but I think the vast majority of patients benefit from having both procedures, and certainly this maximizes their donor supply better than just one or the other. Lastly, when listening to these dogamatic statements made by certain surgeons on a crusade to dispel an entire surgical technique altogether, I'm reminded of a quote from Dr. Konior, who happens to perform both procedures with excellent results and yield.
  11. Just received a mail from Hasson and Wong. Dr. Wong has reviewed your case and feels you are a candidate for FUE into the scar only. Your final pattern of loss is aggressive and your donor reserves are limited. You also have some retro grade type loss pattern which further limits the total number of grafts available in the donor area. It would not be in your best interest in his opinion to have a procedure. The amount of areas that could be covered with the present donor supply would not provide enough cosmetic benefit to warrant surgery. Your best bet is likely to wait until such time technology has advanced enough to make you a viable candidate. For FUE into the scar, he estimates something in the 400 graft range may be required and possible. While we can’t make it disappear, the goal will be to soften the linear scar by strategically placing the necessary amount of grafts in and around it to reduce it’s impact on your appearance. He also feels some removal of the previous grafts may be a good option also to create a more normal looking balding pattern.
  12. I meant twenty, but it’s definitely changed a lot since 2012, back then no American surgeons did FUE, and the ones that did could only do around 800 grafts per day. Now, in 2020, Dr. Hasson among others can do 3,500 in one day with good results. In those days, strip was king.
  13. Your 1st-transplant hair density/ hairline looked amazing. Dr. Hasson felt you needed 2300?
  14. Good morning A bit of my story: I started losing my hair early in my life( around 18 years old) It affected my self-esteem pretty bad. I decided to take action to fix it. I had a 3000 graft transplant with Dr. Koray in turkey in my mid-twenties. I had a good result, but the density in medium to high lightning was lacking. Especially outside, my hairline was quite a see trough. The whole goal of having a transplant was to stop thinking about my hair. I decided to see Dr. Hasson this winter to fix my hairline once for all and be able to stop thinking about my hair. In February, I had an extra 2300 grafts in my hair. Dr. Hasson dense pack the area and I am quite excited to see the result in a few months. I am now at 1.5 months post-op. All my new grafts had shed. My native hairs and previous grafts transplanted during my first operation have started to grow back. The thing is, it seems a lot thinner now than before I had my transplant. All the hairs growing back in my hairline from my previous operation are thin and wiry. My hairline and my temple seem gappy. Is it possible that the grafts I had transplanted during my first transplant went through some kind of shock loss? Are they supposed to grow back ?. I am not too worried about hair transection due to the expertise of my surgeon, but I never heard about a shock loss of previously transplanted hair. I would like to listen to what you guys think. thank you in advance
  15. Dr. Couto is one of the best the world along with Dr. Konior but they both have a 2 year wait list. Eugenix (1.8€ to 3.6€/graft for surgeries with the doctor present) is getting great results with high norwood patients and they can do 7000 grafts in one surgery unlike other Doctors you were advised. Stay clear from ASMED because their results have not been good and several forum members are complaining of serious unethical treatment post surgery. A patient wrote here at HRN that Asmed told him he would have to speak with their lawyers if he wanted to discuss any further about his overharvesting. I don’t understand how people can recommend this clinic. Other great options for FUE are Dr. Bruno Ferreira (2.5€/graft) and HLC Ankara (2.7€/graft and doing high amounts of beard grafts in one day). If you want to do FUT then talk to Feriduni, Hasson&Wong and Rahal.
  16. If money is no issue, there’s no reason to travel. Hasson and Wong, Dr. Konior, Dr. Cooley, Dr. Gabel, would be good. If you’re only interested in FUE, you’ll need a clinic with experience with norwood 5+. I’d consider Eugenix. I’ve heard Cuoto has a 2 year wait. Now, maybe that’s changed with the coronavirus situation. Idk.
  17. Thanks, I've seen this post. That's why I was considering him at first. Let's see what Hasson and Wong and Ferreira say. I'll keep you guys updated. I tried applying to Hattingen Dr. Muresanu but the website says my picture files are too big. So I'll skip that for now. I'm considering the doctor mentioned in India by Melvin too.
  18. In my opinion, you’re better suited for a large strip and then FUE after. Someone like hasson and wong would knock this out of the park. I like Hattingen Dr. Muresanu as well, he’s also ethical.
  19. What are your goals? You should start your own thread. Do you need a mega session with BHT? Do you need just the hairline done? Also, there’s a distinction between the cheapest and the best. In many regards, Dr. Konior, Hasson and Wong, Dr. Gabel, Dr. Rahal, etc, are considered the best, but obviously they will be more expensive. Dr. Keser, doesn’t use microscopes and a member here complained of multiples in his hairline. For that reason alone, I’d strike him off the list. Dr. Ferreira is good, solid, but I personally don’t think he matches up to the other names I mentioned, at least not yet. That said, I can see him becoming one of the top in due time. He still needs more patient reviews, he’s getting there though. So again, I would suggest posting a separate thread and include your goals, hair loss pictures and we’ll be better to answer your question. There are better surgeons for certain scenarios.
  20. You understand that extractions are done by technicians at top clinics like Dr. Lorenzo in Spain, Hasson and Wong, Dr. Rahal, so you’re saying these clinics shouldn’t be considered as top surgeons because of this? It’s very clear on their website who does the work for what tier, in the end it’s up to the patient to decide. Every surgeon has issues with poor growth or bad scarring, literally every single surgeon. What separates the good from the bad is how they treat their patients, and stand by their work. That said, sounds like your mind was made up before hearing from the patient. I feel confident in recommending anyone to Dr. Bansal or Dr. Sethi, because I know they’ll be taken care of and I know they truly care for their patients. I also feel the results speak for themselves.
  21. HRN has never recommended clinics, we recommend surgeons exclusively, it has always been this way. For example, a doctor may work for a clinic, and we may like his work, but if he moves to a different clinic, we would continue recommending him, and not the specific clinic he worked for. We recommend surgeons, if you go on our list, you will see individual surgeons not the clinics. For example, Dr. Hasson and Dr. Wong are both individually recommended. I have been told by Dr. Sethi personally, that he creates the hairline recipient sites, even in the lower package, they may need to update their website to add that information. But I believe he’s telling me the truth. So you don’t want to accept them based on the fact that they offer a more affordable tier? If that’s true, then I can accept that. Although, I don’t agree personally. I think it’s a good thing that top doctors are offering more affordable options, while remaining competitive with these low cost FUE clinics that delegate the entire surgery to techs. In the end, as a patient you still have the option to choose to have the work be done exclusively by the surgeons.
  22. It seems to be the same story time and time again. Where can I go for the cheapest surgery? Instead of what doctor gets the best results? You're asking the wrong questions. I think Dr. Bisnaga's clinic in Athens is on par with a lot of the low-cost clinics in Turkey, I would go to him 100x more than anyone on your list. Just my own opinion. People have said i'm biased to surgeon that are recommended, but that's not true. I would also recommend Dr. Ferreira, and Dr. Muresanu, both of whom aren't recommended, they are doing good work. In my opinion, you are better off going the strip route and going to someone like Dr. Muresanu or Hasson and Wong and then finishing off with FUE. If you choose to stick with FUE, I don't think there is a clinic with as many Norwood 6 and above transformations as Eugenix. Definitely take your time and look up real patient reviews on our forum- this is invaluable for research.
  23. As most people I have been looking for many years for a Dr. I will feel comfortable doing a FUE procedure. Based on previous reviews I contacted Hasson & Wong clinic to learn more about the procedure and what would be the involvement of Dr. Jerry Wong if I decide to move forward with them. They mentioned, that "FUE technician will harvest the follicular units - Dr Wong will make all incision sites - surgical technicians will implant the follicular units into the slits Dr. Wong has created". Does that means that the premium price you pay for one of the most recognized doctors in the industry are mainly for his incisions? Is this the most important part of a FUE procedure? Is this the same case will all top level doctors? The mainly focus on the incisions and shape and technicians do the harvest + implants? Thank for the help.
  24. For your case, I would also look at Hasson and Wong for strip or Eugenix with Dr. Arika Bansal and Dr. Pradeep Sethi, those two clinics have the most experience with high Norwoods. That said, Dr. Rahal, has an impressive track record, just look at home1212, his results are excellent.
  25. I would check out both Rahal and Hasson and Wong, Dr. Nakatsui was trained by Dr. Wong, and he’s in Alberta. Definitely worth consulting with all 3.
