Advice for Hair Loss Sufferers Considering Hair Transplant Surgery

My Story

Found 3,726 results

  1. I had 2 FUE procedures with Dr. Rahal in Ottawa. It's an hour flight from the NY area where I live and its in North America so to me, that's as local as you can get. He's a top notch surgeon and his FUE results are as good as his strip surgeries. I had several consultations with excellent doctors in the US and Canada before settling on Rahal, and I'm glad I did. You also now have Hasson & Wong doing FUE in Canada. I'm sure there are many doctors in the US as well, but these 2 were always on my short list. Good luck.
  2. I obviously can't tell you which one to choose. You have to gather information, read reviews and talk to other patients and then make a decision you feel is best for you. For me the price wasn't an issue. After months of research I narrowed the doctors down to Dr. Hasson (FUT at $19K) and Dr. Erdogan (FUE at €12.5K). I finally went with Dr. Erdogan as I wanted to be able to wear my sides very short and FUE would allow me that. Dr. Erdogan results posted online both by patients and the clinic itself were so consistent and exceptional that I decided to go with him for FUE. Price should never be a deciding factor when thinking about a HT. I will update on the 6 month mark, should be around November 28th next. The growth is slow but gradual at the moment.
  3. This Italian patient in his late 30’s started losing his hair when he was around 20 years old. When he decided it was time to do something about his loss, his research led him to an Italian forum. He concluded Dr. Hasson would be the best option to perform his hair restoration procedure after reviewing many of his patient’s results. Dr. Hasson and team transplanted 5,372 grafts to the frontal zone and mid scalp. 1700 were single hair grafts, 3444 were doubles and 228 were 3-4 hair grafts. He started Finasteride shortly after his procedure to maintain parts of the mid scalp and crown. He is thrilled with his result and the new shorter hair style suits him well. He also enjoys styling products that weren’t really a consideration before his transplant. Photos taken in Italy, 1 year post-op.
  4. Yeah I'm pretty happy with Dr. Gabel, he's in Oregon not far from the Canadian border, so he's not a bad option for you as he's not too much further than Hasson & Wong, who are BC based. Feel free to PM me and I'll give you my email, I'm a little gun shy about posting pics on the internet for privacy reasons, but will gladly talk to you in depth about my experiences and share with you in private. I understand what you're going through, I had my first HT around your age, I'm about 6 years older than you.
  5. I just wanted to announce that I am now a patient advisor and representative for Hasson and Wong clinic.I have been posting on this website since 2003 and have over 1300 posts, so I am sure many of you know me already. I have been helping with translations of Italian patient since 2003 and have witnessed over 500 surgeries. I will continue to help the Italian patients and now the patients from the UK. I feel that I have a great knowledge to help posters with any hair transplant questions or doubt they have. In the past of have been passionate and sometimes making myself sound conflicting but I have now learned to deal with any situation with professionalism and not be misunderstood. If posters do not know me I have had two hair transplant (Dr. Hasson) you can see my photo on my personal webpage http://www.contecapelli.com/about.php?lang=en (hopefully it is ok that I post this). I have helped many people that have questions about hair transplant. I have a huge knowledge of the industry and want to continue to help. I will be here to answer questions give advice no matter which doctor or clinic you are considering. As well as I will regularly post before and after photos from Hasson and Wong from both FUT and FUE. A little history about myself. I had a hair transplant in 2001 which was 2000 grafts and a second transplant was in 2010 with 3700 grafts. I was a realtor for 11 year and during this time when I was able I would translate for Hasson and Wong. 2012 I was diagnosed with cancer (left real estate) and have a bone marrow transplant. Two years later I relapsed again and had my second bone marrow transplant. Unfortunately just recently I relapsed again but in a middle of a trial that seems to be going well. I will admit through the chemo and radiation my hair is not what is was before I was sick. I have a passion for hair transplants, I have met many great people, and seem amazing transformation. I want to do something I enjoy and in my views this is a perfect fit for me. Thanks for reading this. Bill I am not sure how to change my signature and please me know if I said something that is against the forum rules.
  6. This Vancouver area patient in his early 50’s had a small previous procedure to address his hairline back in 2000. It still looked fine but density and volume of the frontal zone had decreased over the years. Wanting to improve the area, he returned to have Dr. Hasson rebuild the hairline, frontal zone and temples with 4579 grafts via FUT. 1221 grafts were singles, 3279 doubles and 79 were 3-4 hair grafts. These shots were taken 8 months post-op
  7. Hi All, I'm hoping to get some of your valuable advice here regarding next steps I ought to take. Background: In June 2013, I underwent 1 session of FUT with Dr. Diep - he transplanted a total of 4700 grafts during the session. I was 28 at the time (I'm currently 32). I am fairly happy with the results of the work in my frontal area / hairline - I cannot say the same for the scar I received, though. The explanation from Dr. Diep for the size of the scar was that it was due to insufficient laxity (I would have appreciated had this been taken into consideration during the surgery, and would have lived with a less visible scar and a less aggressive number of grafts extracted in my initial session). I have been attempting to mask the scar over the last few years through a combination of combing my hair strategically + Topik - this process has definitely been a pain to manage on a daily basis. During my follow up sessions with Dr. Diep (March 2014), he said he could use tricho closure to approximately half the current width, and possibly FUE additional grafts into my front, mid and crown area. The tricho closure itself would be free of charge, while I'd be charged for any grafts implanted. He estimated I would need ~4,000 more grafts to get to full coverage, and thought I had enough donor for this. I've attached pictures of both my scar + more pics of my hair pattern so you can see my current density/volume. (For some reason, they keep getting attached upside down - sorry! Not sure how to change that). My plan is to: 1) Undergo scar revision/excision in order to at least reduce the width of the scar (and pray I suppose that it will not stretch post operation). If there are any usable grafts that come out I'd love to have them implanted into the gaps in my frontal area and possibly crown. 2) Evaluate options for either a 2nd FUT session or an FUE session to add coverage. While I could certainly choose to take Dr. Diep on his offer, I also want to evaluate other doctors to choose from - especially for the scar revision. While I don't doubt Dr. Diep's abilities regarding the art of transplantation, I believe it behooves me to at least get some advice on the top doctors noted for scar revision ability. I have noted down Dr Hasson and Dr Ron Shapiro as 2 of the top doctors I'd probably consider for the revision piece. This thread in particular made me think Shapiro would be great for this kind of work: http://www.hairrestorationnetwork.com/eve/167235-dr-ron-shapiro-scar-revision-w-acell-wound-sheets-vitrase-6-months.html I'd love to get some feedback from folks and experts here. Does my plan make sense? Are there any other specific doctors I should also evaluate for this procedure? Thank you in advance!!
  8. Does it matter which surgeon I pick? I have medium coarse hair and require 4-4.5k grafts per consultation. I wear my hair down, even before I started to loose hair, so hairline is not an issue. I'm looking for overall density as all my relatives eventually progress to Norwood 5-6. I researched and looked at all the before/after photos online from both surgeons. It appears Dr. Hasson does more surgery as there are more results from him. And his average grafts per patient seems to be more. Other than that, I have a hard time deciding which to go for.
  9. All norwood 5s with high sides and back on both sides of the family. In terms of FUT I would put Dr. Feller among the top options with, Bisanga, Hasson + Wong, Konior and Feriduni. My only issue with him is that in the (rare) cases I have seen of a very poor yield there are occasions where his conduct is approaching blatantly unethical, and he is very averse to refunds or touch-ups.
  10. Looks fantastic, I see the gap you're referring too, hopefully things continue to improve, otherwise I'm sure Dr. Hasson would do a small touch up to perfect the density.
  11. Don't worry about it man, people are naturally skeptical on these kinds of boards because nefarious shills are a thing and this is a bit of a unusual thread. If you run a search on here you'll find a lot of positive experiences with Gabel going back years (in fact this is the first negative toned one I've seen and I've read most all of them) so I'd say his PM is genuine. If he doesn't think you're a good candidate I'm sure he would just tell you that and give the reasons so you're educated about your situation, not leave you hanging. I find it amazing that he does the consult emails himself but naturally it means there might be more delay between emails or one falling behind as he's also doing procedures. If you're too shook by it then either get in line for Konior in Chicago or go with Dr. Hasson in Vancouver.
  12. Welcome to the forums, thanks for sharing your story, you mentioned some good docs, also look into hasson n wong, dr.knior, and shapiro medical group, research all of the clinics you like, then have a consult with yourtop three, and take it from there, never rush into surgery, take time to research ,ask as many questions you can think of, better yet write them down.once you feel you found the clinic for you ,take a trip to see them and consult with the doc in person, this way you get a vibe for the doc and clinic ,have your game plan for hair restoration with doc, then schedule when you are ready ,good luck on your journey to more hair.
  13. Thank you, I will look into Dr. Konior and will be contacting Dr. Hasson & Wong. Wish I had the same experience. Thank you, I will check those Doctors to see what is available and decide then. Thank you, I wish I had the same experience, I will probably look elsewhere even though Dr. Gabel was my first choice and seems to be generally well regarded within the field. After the communication issues, I decided to look elsewhere even if it is more expensive.
  14. Hello, I'm not sure exactly where to post this but I was looking into initially getting my hair transplant with Dr. Gabel because of his proximity to where I live. After countless emails to him and then trying to schedule with his assist Whitney, I gave up as they don't follow up with emails very well and he still refuses to quote any price at all. (actually quite upset with how frustrating it's been with their office) Anyway, I was looking into Hasson and Wong in BC but prefer to stay in the states. I currently live in Washington and was hoping there was someone closer that anyone could recommend. Thank you
  15. Impressive effort on your reply. Thank you. But nope. None of the things you listed are advancements in FUE. Dr. Feller every single thing that was listed is a clear advancement of FUE. If those clinics didn't feel that was the case it wouldn't be presented in FUE workshops highlighting the "advancements" in the field. Not a single graft coming out of the scalp via FUE today is affected any less by the three detrimental forces than they were 17 years ago. It is this reality that cuts through all the noise and the hype. Dr Vories has posted that he has been able to overcome these forces as some many other elite FUE surgeons have done as well. This is evidence in their results which is what the patients are after. 99/100 grafts The fact remains that each and every clinic you discuss in your post shows more FUT results than FUE results by a huge margin. And I ask again, if they believe FUE was the equivalent of FUT why would they keep performing FUT ? Why would there be any FUT presentations by them at all? They clearly feel that both methods are sound and has there pros/cons. Dr Konior recently suggested FUE for a patient as opposed to FUT? Why is that? Dr Konior's reputation and results stand out even among the elite. Why would he suggest FUE to a patient willing to undergo FUE if he didn't think the results would be the same? I can't speak to why any particular clinic would choose to jeopardize their good reputation by performing FUE but I can make an educated guess. Wishful thinking, internet hype, and shameless/illegal marketing schemes have misled potential patients into believing FUE is the equivalent of strip. I can see how this happened on this very website by the incredible rejection of reality by so many posters. This is absurd to think these world class clinics would be swayed in such a manner. FUE has become a religion on this and other websites. So to keep the doors open these doctors believe they had better offer FUE or perhaps go out of business. They are just giving the public what they think it wants. The problem is that it is wrong and unethical and can't be justified when the realities of the procedure are compared to that of FUT. This is a reckless and irrational theory of yours. Are you implying that SMG, Hasson & Wong, & Konior would go out of business if they didn't offer FUE? Konior has a one year waiting list for FUT patients..... This is equivalent to Lavar Ball stating that he can beat Michael Jordan one on one (in basketball). Is this the knee jerk response that you after to keep people tuned into the next outlandish remark that gets made? That's why, at least in the United States, informed consent is where the BS stops. Failing to inform a patient of the differences between the two procedures and the specific disadvantages of FUE in particular is a violation of most if not all State Medical Board regulations. This can lead to medical license suspension or revocation. It can also lead to civil action. The medical boards of other countries, especially the third world ones, don't seem to give a damn. Physician accountability is non-existent especially when the procedure is elective. You focus on all the "successes" posted online by FUE doctors in general. That's very nice, but how many failures and unhappy patients do you see on these doctors websites ? None, of course. No sane doctor would do that. But there are plenty of unhappy FUE patients on this very website that you completely ignored in your post. There are plenty of unhappy FUE and FUT patients Dr Feller. You would be remiss not to mention the failed FUT cases for which they are plenty. How many unhappy patients were given money back by their doctors in exchange for keeping their mouths and keyboards quiet? Again this happens with both methods FUT & FUE so another moot point. I can guarantee you they exist because such patients have come to my office and told me their silence was paid for by their doctor. You didn't mention them because you have no idea they exist. But they most certainly do. I have been reached out to by forum members who weren't happy with the results on many instances asking for options etc... I don't doubt you have had your fair share of repair cases but yet again those aren't only FUE cases you have repaired? I presume you have done your fair share of FUT repairs, scar revision etc ? Most or all of your entire field of view concerning FUE and hair transplants in general is from online reading. That is simply too narrow of a view for you to be truly informed. All I can say is trust me when I say there is much more to the picture than you can possibly be aware of. Please enlightenment us all and elaborate on what we aren't aware of so we can be "truly informed"
  16. I had an in-person consultation with Dr. Konior and we talked about FUT vs FUE. I need 1500-2000 grafts and Dr. Konior told me that he would choose FUE for me without a doubt because of the way I like to style my hair (keeping it very short on the sides). He explained that there have been many advances in the FUE procedure over the years and he now thinks it yields excellent results. I didn't go in to the consultation requesting FUE, and even though I prefer FUE due to less visible scarring at shorter hair lengths, I was open to the idea of getting FUT if Dr. Konior thought that was my best option. He didn't, and confidently reassured me that FUE was the right procedure for me. Dr. Feller, I know you have a fantastic and well-deserved reputation for your FUT results, but in my honest opinion, using such strong, emotional language like "FUE ... rips the graft from the scalp", "FUE is internet hype", and "FUT [allows for] the least amount of trauma known to man" doesn't really help your case. When there are top-tier surgeons like Konior, Hasson and Wong, Rahal, Erdogan, Lorenzo, Bisanga, Feriduni and many others recommending FUE and getting home-run results, it’s hard to make such strong claims against FUE without inferring that you also believe these surgeons are running unethical practices. Finally, speaking from a personal point of view, I have no problem with the *idea* of FUT. I’m not concerned at all about having a strip removed from my head. I’ve had larger medical procedures done and to me FUT surgery seems like no big deal. My biggest concern, by far, is that the FUT scar prevents me from wearing my hair short on the sides. I’ve seen some FUE patients with undetectable scarring at a grade 1 which I just don’t believe is possible with strip. I want as few limitations as possible after my hair transplant, and for me I think FUE is the way to go.
  17. You're correct Matt. From a hair LENGTH standpoint, you're seeing mainly my first HT result. BUT, there's a lot of short-hair growth "in my frontal third" area which is only about half-inch in length. Right now that's acting as "filler" but in a few months it will be "standard hair length" which will certainly add to my current situation. In any lighting, my hair looks damn good and going with Dr. Rahal for 2x FUT in my frontal third has been my best decision ever, really. I don't think other FUT Gods such as Hasson, Konior, etc... could have done any better. Comparable? Yes, better? NO...
  18. Hi all, I'm interested in getting an FUE procedure to fill in temples and sideburns, and maybe add to my beard as well. I've seen great results from Dr. Jerry Wong but they've all been FUT. I was wondering if anyone has had an FUE with him, or knows of his track record with FUE. I know Hasson and Wong were late to offer FUE, but they say It's because they weren't ready to do so until recently
  19. Looks like things are really starting to pick up! I had FUE with Dr. Hasson exactly one month after you, so I appreciate the frequent picture updates
  20. Welcome! Have you checked out our list of recommended physicians? You can easily search by geographic area. Here is a list of all the surgeons we recommend in Canada. Dr. John Gillespie Dr. Victor Hasson Dr. Thomas Nakatsui Dr. H. Rahal Dr. Jerry Wong Here is some information about how we recommend hair transplant surgeons.
  21. I have a hair transplant scheduled in November with Dr. Erdogan in Turkey. Several of the post-op instructions are really confusing me and I thought I'd make a post about it here. For example, Dr. Erdogan recommends discontinuing minoxidil for a month before surgery, and then not to use it again until after 4 months post-op. That's at least 5 months without minoxidil. I've been on minoxidil for about 10 years and I'm thinking that I may see adverse effects if I suddenly stop using it. If I do indeed have to stop using it for 5 months, wouldn't it be smart to stop using it NOW so if I do notice adverse effects, at least they'll occur before the hair transplant and Dr. Erdogan can fill in the weak areas. Does this make sense? Also, no styling products for 6 months? I mentioned this to JustJax in his thread, but I just cannot see the reason for this. How am I supposed to go 6 months without using any sort of styling products in my hair? It will just look messy and I can't afford to look like that for so long. JustJax mentioned a clever alternative using a mixture of aloe vera and almond oil to style the hair, both of which are approved by ASMED post-op, but if possible I'd like to use my regular American Crew styling product as soon as my hair gets long enough to do so (3-4 weeks post-op). Post-op instructions are very confusing to me overall because they seem to differ wildly from doctor to doctor. Some doctors advise using minoxidil as soon as a few days after surgery, and others, like Dr. Erdogan and Hasson and Wong, recommend several months off. Others say styling products are OK to use as soon as the grafts settle in, around 10 days. Any thoughts on this? Should I just stop minoxidil now and hope for the best? Did anyone else here go without styling products for months after their transplant? EDIT: Hmm, according to their post-op instructions at https://www.hairtransplantfue.org/postoperative-instructions you can start using styling products after Day 15. Still not sure about minoxidil.
  22. "Robotics is not the problem...the problem is the degree of skill or competence of the individual using the tool." __________________ I couldn't disagree more and the results speak for themselves. Some of the most respected clinics who have implemented the Artas are no longer using the system. Rahal, Shapiro (SMG), and Hasson & Wong who clearly were after the best method possible for their FUE extraction. A statement from Hasson & Wong website; We have spent the last four years researching the FUE process. We have looked at manual punches, multiple varieties of power punches and purchased an Artas robot. Each technique has been assessed from multiple angles and in great depth. Approximately six months ago we made an assessment and came to a conclusion. The best technique -in our opinion – and by a large margin, was the manual punch. I would like to thank personally our friends Dr. Jose Lorenzo and Dr. Korai Erdogan, for their very kind assistance and opening their doors for us -so we could learn their techniques. This speaks for itself.
  23. Vancouver area patient in his mid 30’s was bothered by his hairline and frontal zone. Weakness extended into the mid scalp. Dr. Hasson and team transplanted 4042 grafts via FUT to restore the aforementioned areas. Of the 4042 grafts, 998 were singles, 2691 were doubles and 353 were 3-4 hair grafts. Photos were taken 9 months post-op.
  24. David, There have been a myriad of ethical questions raised within the past year. Dutchie and Dr. Hasson for instance. Dr. Bhatti, with whom you have personal experience. But I'm not responding to drop names. You're still incentivized to protect your doctors, although there is a definite hierarchy of quality. If you were in fact a real patient advocate, as you claim, you would simply rank or group them in a tier list informed by data driven consistency. You won't do that. Your physicians pay to be recommended. That is no secret. This is your livelihood. Drop the charade of being primarily a patient advocate (which you are to some extent - loosely), if you'd like members to take you seriously. You are a business man who occasionally provides useful advice to prospective patients and provides a safe platform for the exchange of information and doctor/ patient relationships. I, for instance, do not profit financially from any doctor and therefore cannot be accused of any implicit bias. I can warn or encourage based on my fairly substantial experience, untethered to the promotion of any physician. But you seem to have a very confused understanding of the relationship between patient advocacy and conflicts of interest. I interact with forum members here, because I can have an honest discourse with minimal interference or censorship. And providing a patient with anything less than complete honesty is unhelpful and disingenuous. Members have helped me tremendously, and I have done the same. I have developed some great friendships. You may take personal issue or offense with my remarks, but that is not a violation of the the terms of service, nor is it egregious behavior in any way. To quote Ben Shapiro and now Dr. Feller, "Facts don't care about your feelings." These are the facts. If you wish to change them, that's entirely possible.
