Advice for Hair Loss Sufferers Considering Hair Transplant Surgery

My Story

  1. For example, l was told by two H&W reps that l was a candidate for either FUE or FUT. However, upon meeting Dr. Hasson in person, he said absolutely no to FUT due to elasticity issues. Imagine if l had only learned this the day of my surgery! At Rahal, l was quoted x number of grafts for FUE and FUT. When l met with Dr. Rahal in person at his clinic, he had a very different approach to my HT plan that resulted in much fewer grafts. Again, l would have been extremely upset to learn this on the day of my surgery. Bottom line is had l booked my HT after only the rep assessments, l would have received entirely different recommendations/plans/expectations the day of my surgery. At least now l have met each doctor in person and l know exactly what to expect when l walk in.
  2. I have also had in-person consultations with H&W and Rahal. Just a little advice....Tara at Rahal is fantastic, H&W reps not so much, but you MUST see Dr. Rahal and Dr. Hasson in person before you make your decision. The docs will ultimately make the final call on your HT strategy and it will likely differ drastically from what you were originally told in the consultation (especially at H&W). Very frustrating and you may end up very disappointed!
  3. Thx for the comments guys! Melvin-HTsoon / stephcurry30 Correct, retrograde loss can reduce the area of good donor hair and for that reason alone it is better to a take strip higher in the donor area. Another good reason is that the scalp tissue higher up is more stable than the tissue closer to the ears. The tissue closer to the ears tends to be less like the scalp and can be prone to stretching which can result in a wider scar. In order to maximize yield, the doctor attempts to take as long and as wide a strip as safely as possible. This will often result in an incision that is closer to the temples. Dr. Hasson carefully and meticulously checks of the donor hair and can determine with uncanny certainty which hair is “permanent”. In some cases the permanent zone is quite high up on the head and quite far forward. His incision will always fall short of the end of the permanent zone and therefore the scar will never be exposed with any future potential hair loss. I've seen thousands of procedures, many of which were performed in a similar manner such as this and 16 years and counting I have yet to see a scar become exposed. As far as could this have any negative effects on the patient in the future? I would say the simple answer is no in the hands of our capable surgeons. If a particular surgeon was to miscalculate this equation and a very small portion of the scar in the temple area was to one day be exposed, a very small FUE procedure could be employed to reconstruct the small area in front of the scar to hide it. But, again this has never been necessary in our clinic but it does give the patient a bit of protection in the unlikely worst-case scenario. andy_+_+ We are forever trying to improve the quality of our photos. We have set up an area of the clinic exclusively for taking post-op videos and photos. However, there is also an area right outside the OR’s where the doctors or staff take photos in the morning before the procedure. Some factors can affect the photos such as how much outside light is coming in that area at any given time. In some cases the post-op photos are taken in another location and lighting can slightly vary and effect the skin tones. We have also experimented with different backgrounds so there may be before photos taken with one background and post-op with another. We try and match them as best we can. I hope you will agree that while the sets of photos do not always match up exactly, the quality, detail and consistency of our photos is second to none when it comes to these presentations.
  4. I wish I had your current hair! you look like you should be an easy fix for a top notch surgeon and that's the hardest part quite honestly - selection of the appropriate doctor. I've had FUE surgeries with Dr. Rahal in Ottawa. He's an excellent surgeon with the artistry needed to recreate natural hairlines. There are many others as well so do you research and consult with several until you are satisfied you can select one based on your own criteria. Hasson & Wong are also producing some excellent FUE work as of late. Dr. Konior in Chicago is stellar. Check out examples of their work, speak to their patients, lots of good resources on this and other hair forum sites. Good luck to you.
  5. Vancouver area patient in his early 40’s. Above average donor hair, fine to medium in texture. Dr. Hasson and team transplanted 7410 grafts front to crown via FUT. 2094 were single hair grafts, 4955 were doubles and 361 were 3-4 hair grafts. These photos were taken 1-year post-op.
  6. Dr. Hasson has just the other day recommended my brother to take the Finasteride paste, or given the option vs. the pill. So it appears they do still offer it?
  7. Thanks, I have started Rogaine two weeks ago now, with Belgravia Hair Clinik. A word about Belgravia though. I didn't feel comfortable there at all. The only reason I choose their treatment is because that way I have a professional to go to should anything go wrong or should I have any issues, rather than having to pay 200 Pounds every time for a dermatologist appointment. If anyone cares I can go into further detail about my experience there. As for the treatment, I'm now using a minoxidil solution which they apparently somehow produce themselves, which has Caffeine added to it. And with that a special shampoo which also appears to be their own product. I have also realized now that I have a lot of dandruff. This is something I never really understood. I never knew what kind of hair I had. For example if you look at shampoo bottles it says this is for dry hair or what not. I still can't tell if my hair is dry or what. I used to think I had no dandruff, I thought dandruff implied having flakes coming out of your hair. I never had that. But during one dermatologist consultation I was told I had a lot of build up and dandruff on my skin. And in hindsight that does make sense, my scalp actually is always itchy, not to the point that it drives me mad but I catch myself scratching myself a lot and I never see other people do that. During the consultation I was also shown a magnification of my skin on top which showed a lot of bloody nicks. So it's evident I scratch myself a lot. I actually have an identical twin who went for a consultation somewhere else where he was told that (and my brother is in the same situation as I) this actually isn't male pattern baldness but there's just too much buildup and the hair can't develop. We don't really know if we should believe that. He also went for a consultation with Dr. Hasson who right away said this was MPB and prescribed Finasteride. So I'm confused about the different diagnoses.
  8. Hi folks. So I'm finally ready to take the plunge, live in Toronto Canada and have narrowed my short list to Dr. Nadimi in Chicago (of Konior fame), H&W in Vancouver, and Dr. Rahal in Toronto. My consults with each of them went like this: Dr. Nadimi: FaceTime consult Surgery in Chicago 1500-2000 FUE grafts recommended, could be all the way up to 2400 Shes not entirely sure she can get 2400 FUE grafts from my donor area based on photos and not-so-great FaceTime connection She will perform all extracts and most implants, will be there the entire time Does not feel comfortable doing more than 2400 FUE in a session due to scalp blood supply and time that grafts need to be implanted by (~8 hours) Uses latest tech, hybrid dull/sharp punch, learned everything from Konoir Potentially a discount for future hair transplants No official growth guarantee Recommended to stay in Chicago for a week to get looked after by the clinic Seems like a high end operation Dr. Rahal (Aaron and Tara did the consult): Aaron started the consult and was decent, called in Tara in the middle who blew me away In person consult Surgery in Toronto Measured a total of approx 5000 FUE grafts available in donor area 2500-3000 FUE grafts recommended for 1st transplant of hairline, will likely need another 2500 down the road for crown and touch up, aiming for 45-50 follicles per square cm Estimated Norwood 4-5 in the future No issues doing 3000 FUE in 8 hours, they have done 4200 in a day before Also uses latest hybrid dull/sharp punch tech Rahal and Mike will perform the extractions, Rahal will make the incisions and someone other than Rahal will implant Growth guarantee and free touch ups (not sure what the fine print is around this) Discounted graft rate for future transplants Patient care team access for a year Suggested pairing with PRP Hasson & Wong (James did the consult): In person consult Surgery in Vancouver 3000 FUE grafts recommended, possibly have 5000-6000 FUE grafts in donor area 3000 FUE done over two days, they limit surgeries to about 2000 FUE per day Recommended Dr. Hasson due to hairline objective (Wong more for crown work) Each doctor has performed 10,000+ surgeries Also uses latest hybrid dull/sharp punch tech, 0.85 punch size Techs do the extraction and implantation, Hasson performs incisions Estimated Norwood 5A future recession Informal growth guarantee and free touch ups Discounted future transplants For out of town patients they offer free lodging (3 days), taxis to and from the airport, and a partial flight credit I have to say, Rahal's team did the best sell job and I'm leaning that way.. but is 2500-3000 FUE too ambitious for one day? Am I risking hairs due to them rushing? I don't want to bias your opinion any more than that, but based on your experience on this forum, knowledge, what was said above and my pictures, what would you do? Any other insight or commentary you could offer before I make the plunge? Are there any other GTA doctors that I must absolutely check out? Hoping to finalize a decision in the next few days. REALLY appreciate all the help and support you guys can give. Thanks.
  9. Aftermath! I never get tired of seeing your result! The last time I saw it I believe was before your last 660 graft procedure with Dr. Hasson. For those wondering here, it looked impressive even before the last one. I can imagine it’s even better now and the pics give us a great idea. Hope you have been well and always nice to see you sharing here.
  10. Vancouver area patient in his late 30’s. Dr. Hasson and team rebuild a new hairline, restored the frontal zone, mid-scalp and crown. 5551 grafts were transplanted of which 1735 were single hair grafts, 3557 were doubles and 259 were 3-4 hair grafts. These photos were emailed to me by the patient 7 months post-op. As you can see, he is using gel in his hair. The nice thing about pics with gel is you can see into the scalp and get a good view of the uniform coverage. You can't hide any imperfections or lack of density when you can see the hair exit the skin. It takes a relatively high density to be able to pull off this look.
  11. I spoke with Dr.Hasson and Doug a couple of days ago. Dr.Hasson said that all my native hairs have shed inspite of my meds. He recommended doubling the dosage and another transplant to fix the issues. But I have reservations about both the recommendations. I haven't given much thought to a refund. Will update the thread in case of updates.
  12. Have you received a response and plan of action/remedy for this from Dr. Hasson? Good luck with everything. Hope it all works out for the best with you.
  13. C'mon dude! If you do in-depth investigations into hair transplant history you will NOT let him operate on you. I can't be any clearer. Dr. Feller is top notch and in the biz for over 20 years. Frankly, you seem resistant to other suggestions of top USA FUT surgeons except for Huebner. Man oh man - can some other posters get in here and show him the light? Frankly, if this is your last 'strip' surgery - consult w/Hasson and Wong. They are known for great yield and consistently have the largest sessions of FUT surgery docs in N. America. Their techs are consistently rated A+.
  14. Jimmy and all, Reality is, everybody is different. Someone with a small degree of hair loss like Jimmy may be very unhappy and affected by it on a daily basis while somebody with more hair loss may not even care. As for me, I had extensively more hair loss then Jimmy by the time I had my first hair transplant however, when I was younger and started noticing a small bald spot appearing in the crown, I became very insecure about it. Now given that my age at the time was close to 21 and I only had a small degree of loss in the crown, I was not really a good candidate for a hair transplant at that time anyway. However, in Jimmy‘s case, with hairline recession, he was certainly a better candidate than I was with a small ball spot in the crown. Long story short, Jimmy‘s hair before surgery may not have looked bad at all to many of us, but to him, it was a major insecurity. So he went to one of the best doctors and underwent hair restoration surgery and feels a lot better about himself now. Dr. Hasson is not the kind of doctor to just do a procedure on somebody without discussing the potential of future hair loss and the possible need for additional work as he ages. Thus, as long as Jimmy is aware that he may need additional work down the line and has been advised that hair loss medication such as Propecia and Rogaine may be helpful in maintaining existing hair, there’s nothing wrong with what he did… In fact, he’s very happy and we should be happy for him. Best wishes, Bill
  15. This Vancouver area patient in his early 30's came to see us about restoring his hairline and temple points. Dr. Hasson and team transplanted 2640 grafts via FUE. 290 grafts were singles, 1949 were doubles and 401 were 3-4 hair grafts. A .8 mm motorized punch was used. Donor hair and texture slightly above average. A burn scar was also covered. These photos were taken 11 months post-op.
  16. CSHI, Because you have posted on another unrelated forum topic, I've taken the liberty of moving your post and any replies directly to you to it's own topic. Thus, please post any additional remarks, photos, etc. on this topic instead of the topic regarding Dr. Hasson, which was the original topic you piggybacked on. Thanks and best wishes, Bill
  17. Wow, I think this is the only bad result I've seen from H&W. Very sorry you didn't get the results you were hoping for, I'm sure that must be incredibly disappointing. I'm curious to know if you spoke to Dr. Hasson to get his input on what happened here.
  18. Jimmy, I like this topic because it’s very unique… You decided to create a poll instead of just sharing your experience. As a two-time Dr. Hasson patient (four time hair transplant patient overall), I am very happy with my results. In fact, after wearing my hair very short for the last 10 years or so, I actually started to grow my hair out a bit just for fun. I will likely be posting pictures in a few months which will also show people that there are no limits as to how you can grow and style your hair with the right hair transplant from the right hair surgeon. I see that you have been added to the ranks of many satisfied Dr. Hasson patients. In my opinion, he has always been one of the best and still is today. I appreciate you sharing your experience and photos and I am ecstatic for you that you are happy with your new head of hair. Please feel free to continue posting, sharing your experience and helping others who are seeking advice and excellent doctors. Best wishes, Bill
  19. Nothing personal? I don’t know if it was a joke earlier when you asked OP what medication his pschyatrist has him on but, effectively, you’re calling this man crazy for dealing with his hair loss in a reasonable way. A way in which he had the means to. A way which countless other people have shared on this forum. You made it personal. OP clearly had a receding hairline. He wasn’t born with that hairline. He went to one of the most respected doctors on this forum. On this planet. A doctor who wouldn’t just throw some grafts on OP’s head in the way that a lot of these Turkish clinics would without a second thought. Having had a consultation with this doc I would think he said something along the lines of, “I don’t think you need a transplant just yet.”, as that’s a reasonable thing to say to a person with this degree of hair loss. OP said, “I don’t want to wait.” After further discussion Dr. Hasson performed the surgery. Those are literally the facts that have been presented. Who are you to say what someone should or should not do with their body? If jimmytwotimes is unhappy with his hair loss and wants to get a hair transplant then so be it. He has a story to tell not unsimilar to anyone else’s story on this forum. “I lost my hair. I got depressed. I fixed it.” jjsrader, I find great value in a lot of what you have to offer to this forum. You bring intriguing debate and wealthy information to the table. Right now, however, you are, in fact, being an a$shole. There’s no mockery in this thread. There’s valuable information from a man who caught his hair loss early and fixed it. Stop sh1tting in this man’s bed. You can attest to it being an extremely emotional decision to get the surgery let alone talk about it publicly. If you have nothing of value or intelligence to add to this thread then get lost and allow others to show their support.
  20. Okay here are the pics. Before/ PRE surgery/ and two years after. Again, there is no powder or anything in my hair aside from some hair product. Hasson 3100 grafts. I asked him to go super tight and point out my temples. I hate the look of guys getting the top and peaks done but not doing the sides too. I’d go full on and reaveal my face but i come from a very traditional Irish family and they’d never let me love it down. But no one back home has notcied - including my own Ma and brothers. I live in Vancouver but was more than open to traveling to get the surgery done. My biggest fears were: would it take. Would people be able to notice? Was i going to the right Dr. Yes it took. And I don’t think my own wife would have known if she wasn’t there herself. Hasson (as I mentioned earlier) genuinely tried to talk me out of this. He was clear that I didn’t need anything done - but my mind was made up. He warned me about all of the patients that come see him who have had hack jobs done and they all end up in his office. Some he can fix and others he cannot. When i told him about the other two dr’s i was considering (one I consulted with and the other I was serious about going to) he got very serious and took me through some repairs he had to do on patience that had been to those doctors. He said he’d take me just to save me from getting an undesirable job from someone else. And we are off the the races. Mostly for scheduling reasons it took me two years to get back to him. And he was over the moon with my results. There are a few FUE adjustments we’ll make along the front hairline but this will only take a few minutes in his chair. My over all expectations were surpassed. I can’t tell you how many people come up to me /strangers/old friends/etc and tell me how great my hair is. Anyone wondering about more details - bring em on:)
  21. Don't consult Knudsen or especially not Dr. W00ds who is a horrible surgeon and well behind the times. W00ds likes to discredit the entire FUE industry on a regular basis and is considered by most to be a crackpot. Also he charges $10 per graft, which is not joke when his results are complete garbage. How can you in good faith recommend consultation with Dr W00ds when looking at his horrible results? Funny enough also on my flight from Qatar on the way back from Turkey the guy I was sitting next to on the flight had had an 850 graft FUT from Knudsen and it looked like a thin, diffused ratsnest of a hairline, although the main issue was that everything behind it had gone. There are virtually no recent results available to look at from Knudsen on his website or elsewhere online. If FUT is a consideration why in the world would you pay more with Knudsen even including travel than you would if you chose top-end surgeons like Rahal or Hasson/Wong who have proven track records? Stupidity. OP, consult some other clinics like Lorenzo's or Hasson/Wongs if you feel you need a second opinion, but don't waste your time with incompetent Australian doctors.
  22. I have already justified my position, actually I did so clearly and concisely in my first post. You can see scalp with dry hair in the frontal third of a patient of yours in photos. Seeing scalp when hair is wet or cut short is something that is perhaps plausible. But not with long hair in photos, photos add more density than what is actually there. So it is a red flag to look for when analyzing hair restoration results. I can say that with authority based on my long years of experience as a multiple HT patient with elite surgeons Dr. Konior, Dr. Hasson and Dr. Bisanga and also through several decades of research and information gathering. You can try to argue with me and waste your time, but these are my honest and frank opinions which are meant to help other hair loss sufferers. You repeatedly and aggressively attempting to make strong rebuttals about my opinion has now raised a red flag about your clinic I had not previously been aware of. And also please stop dismissing under the rug KO's results with Dr. Lupanzula He is not a satisfied patient. It bothers me a great deal that you waste so much effort debating with me but never added one word about his case nor condolences to him that it didn't work out well for him. In summary, the users and veteran members of this forum are not the ones who have to prove anything, and should be free to post their experiences without being attacked by clinic reps.
  23. Hmm, well since you're an asshole and came here with your mind made up maybe I'll try some reverse psychology so you piss more money down the toilet on shitty results. DON'T go to Dr. G, his results on you were terrible! You don't want more bad results do you? Go with a good doctor like Hasson or Wong! Avoid Dr. G he doesn't know what he's talking about!
  24. Probably good for me to come out and say this; YOU don't know what you're talking about. I appreciate the feedback but how can you comment on my doc (Dr. Gillespie) without knowing who he is or the kind of work he does? You're obviously a troll who likes the sound of your own voice. Did you consider perhaps that it's been 6 YEARS since I've done my first procedure and have continued to bald since then? Doesn't really reflect the results from the first procedure, does it? Additionally, did you keep in mind that the doctor I went to offered a conservative approach, as I was in my early thirties and knew I would continue balding? No, you just started critiquing my doctors "skill" because he didn't do 5,000 grafts on me the first time. Way to go, keyboard warrior! The only valid tidbit of info in your little rant was that I should seek the opinions of other doctors and I will - I have an appointment with Hasson & Wong in 3 weeks and will see what they have to say. Thanks for that. Lastly, you seem irritated with my posts. May I offer some advice to you: if you don't like my posts don't read them
  25. It's Dr. John Gillespie from the Gillespie Clinic in Calgary, Canada. He's been doing transplants for over 30 years. From the research I've done, he's pretty good. I've had a friend go to him as well for 2 procedures (2,400 and 2,200 grafts each time) and his hair looks pretty darn good. Additionally, although some people on here would have me believe the results from my first procedure aren't great, they don't realize it's been 6 years since I had my transplant and have balded quite a bit since then. I should mention, I have a consultation coming up with Hasson & Wong (in Vancouver) coming up soon to see what they have to say. Can anyone comment? Thanks,
