Advice for Hair Loss Sufferers Considering Hair Transplant Surgery

My Story

  1. Arson, FUE isn't all its hyped to be. But if you want to actually move some hair consider doing highly refined follicular unit grafting. Dr. Gabel in Portland appears to do highly refined follicular unit grafting using tiny incisions that are carefully oriented. To learn more, click here. He also offers FUE if you really insist on taking the slow train. Hasson and Wong, who are based in Vancouver Canada do outstanding Ultra Refined Follicular Unit Grafting and offer consultations in Portland. To learn more, click here. Let us all know how things go for you. Best wishes for restoring a full look. Pat P.S. Arson, If you do burn one of these offices down during your visit please don't tell them I sent you :-)
  2. On March 8th, 2004, Darren had 4950 grafts in one session with Dr. Hasson. The following photos highlight his results.
  3. Mahair, I vote yes to the proposition that people be encouraged to slow down and visit forums, this and others, before making the commitment to doing surgery. But short of such new laws it's "buyer beware". I would also like to see more cooperation between Hair Loss web publishers. For example any references to this community, other than defaming comments, are banned by Farrel Manne and Spencer Kobren on their sites and forums because we are considered the "competition". So just how interested in the patient's well being are they really when they don't want potential patient to find this community? Just what do they fear? I don't think that such policies benefit potential patients on their sites. I also find it unfortunate that we have been forced to limit references to Hasson and Wong on this forum due to their ongoing legal harrasment based on comments made on this forum. References to Dr. Alvi have also been restricted after his attorney contacted me and threatened to sue us if posters on our forum continued to comment on his practice of dense packing the temple areas on young patients. Another prominent physician was removed from this community and forum when his past marketing director confirmed our suspicion that he was fabricating patient testimonials on this and other forums. This prominent physician was requiring some of his employees to actually work over time making up patient stories and posting them on the forums. Such abuses of this and other forums along with legal harrasment and petty politics are unfortunate and only serve to waste time and resources and limit our ability to openly share beneficial information. There is plenty that goes on behind the scenes that is down right appalling - including an active movement on the part of some surgeons to undermine support for this community. But patients will continue to share information and critique physicians online whether certain surgeons like it or not. Hair loss sufferers will also continue to find and use this forum regardless of any censorship on other hair loss websites. You can and do play an important role in this patient based movement by being active on this forum. But I ask you to challenge those who moderate other forums, such as Hair Loss Help.com run by Farrel Manne, to go beyond protecting their turf and allow posts which make reference to this and other constructive forums. Attempting to control the open flow of information failed to work in the USSR and it will ultimately fail online. For our part we will from now on welcome all who post on this forum to make reference to any useful resource if they are not doing so for commercial self interest. To Farrel Manne and others who run hair loss educational sites and forums - tear this wall of cencorship down!
  4. New pics will be up in the coming days, I will be 6 months out of the chair on Feb 9th. I will get a new haircut this week to have my donor area REALLY short then post pics. I kinda wish I went a little more aggressive on the temples. Chris, don't kid yourself about the 'little improvement' thing. Thats how I felt, now I regret not going 'BIG'. Although Dr.Hasson probably wouldn't go any more aggressive than he did. He did pile 2100 grafts into a relatively small area....
  5. "I am surprised that a Dr with the obvious skill and experience in planting, design and angulation could be so poor in closure but, perhaps that is the case." I think that is unlikely (but certainly possible). Have you seen Bukkaroo's photos? His scar is similar and never had any previous work. His surgeon was Dr. Hasson. Some people just have problematic healing characteristics --myself included. If he did botch the scar, I'm sure that he will revise it for free. I realize that it sucks to get cut again. Don't worry Spock, you'll look great when all is said and done.
  6. reading up on this subject on the internet, most comments are that there is very little difference in healing characteristics between suturing and stapling..negligible at best...having had 4 back surgeries in my "youth", 2 closed with staples, 2 with sutures, i can tell you that the staples are MUCH less annoying and painful than suturing.. using underlying dissolving sutures probably makes sense where the donor strip is fairly large, and closing the wound will be a bit tight...using the underlying sutures just allows a stronger bonding of the tissue while its healing...less risk of scar stretching...but im sure between Dr. Wong and Hasson, its just a personal preference,as I have heard no complaints from patients of either one, about their scarring...
  7. I asked Dr. Wong the same question.....Dr. Hasson believes that the underlying sutures can cause more scarring. Differences in opinions I guess. I'd say both docs have proven their craft, whichever method they choose.
  8. Hairworthy, Why did Dr. Hasson recommend 14 days for the staples versus the usual 10? I ask because I am going to H&W (Hasson) in August and I have been thinking about staying out in Vancouver and having the staples removed there. However, I don't want to do this if I have to wait 14 days. I actually thought you could have the staples removed after 8 days, but obviously it is better to do whatever is necessary to minimize the scar. Hugh / Hairworthy / Jotronic (if you are reading this), Do you know why Hasson doesn't also use dissolvable sutures like Wong does? I am surprised they both don't use the same method for harvetsing the donor strip. Could the amount of days before staple removal be brought down with the use of dissolvable sutures?
  9. Hairworthy........I have another question for you since your recent visit to Dr Hasson. Before the HT when you and the Dr. were discussing the procedure, is the topic brought up of which direction the lateral slits will be made? I was wondering if hairstyle can determine by the lateral slit direction? If made to the left the hair would grow left (right to the right) or straight ahead so that any style can be worked?
  10. bummer to set the metal detector off in the airport -HAHAHAHAHAHA - didn't happen to me (wonder why?). My wife yanked out my staples yesterday at day 8. Dr. Wong, unlike Dr. Hasson, puts desolvable sutures in the underlying tissue before stapling the wound. This provides extra reinforcement. I can honestly say that having those staples out is a HUGE relief. Looking forward to seeing your updated pics. I am having camera issues right now but will be getting new pics up when I get a new cam. Taking 6 days off work has taken its toll on my free time. It was great meeting you in Vancouver and looking forward to your progress.
  11. I'm scheduled for early August with Dr. Hasson so I look forward to tracking the progress of you H&W fellows just ahead of me: Hairworthy, Hugh Jordan, HairQless, Wanna-HT (others?) Hairworthy, I am a yank like most posters here but I did spend a year of my life in Surrey (Godalming to be precise) and it is a lovely area. Good Luck to All!
  12. When I saw Dr. Hasson of H&W he did the same thing with me. Jotronic any word on this guy??
  13. All, Some of you that know my story know that the whole reason why I had my old mini/micro work eleven years ago was because my best friend wanted me to come along to a consultation with him. The rest is history. Well, five months ago I was home for Xmas and I did an evaluation for him,(yes we're still best friends). He had three surgeries with Dr. Norris and wound up with about 1500 mini grafts to my 800. Like me he progressed to a NW6 with nothing but his grafts being on the top of his scalp. Well his scalp laxity was not good. I was figuring on maybe 2000 grafts for him on the high end which would be good enough to at least hide some of his old work so he could stop being embarrassed in public. I knew he wanted to come out to Vancouver to have Dr. Wong work on him but he didn't know when he'd be able to. I told him he may as well start the scalp exercises now and it would help him to be more prepared once he was able to come out. When he arrived the other day for his pre-op consult with Dr. Wong his scalp laxity had improved greatly. So great in fact that Dr. Wong was able to harvest 4100 grafts the next day!!! Dr. Wong rebuilt his hairline, brought out his right temple to match the left temple and placed the rest of the grafts as far back as he could go which was just into the top of his crown. The rest of his crown is still bald. I can't stress this enough guys. If you are coming to Hasson & Wong or ANY strip doc do yourself a favor and start these exercises NOW. It really does make a difference.

  15. I'm hearing some good things about Dr. Lehr. I spoke to a cosmetic surgeon who has an excellent reputation with the rich/famous in Beverly Hills and his name came up as a honest, good up and coming doctor. Who knows, maybe in 10 years he will be at Hasson/Wong/Shapiro level?? Time will tell.
  16. FoxLox, I'm thrilled that your HT from Lehr is turning out great-- way to go! I never meant to discredit Dr. Lehr in my previous post. I never went to him-- only Dr. Norwood on 4 different procedures in the 90's and the last 2 procedures Dr. Lehr assisted Dr. Norwood-- that's my only contact with Dr. Lehr. At the time--6 yrs ago, Dr. Lehr seemed like an eager, intelligent, straight forward surgeon with the patient's interest in mind. As far as the "less experience" than a Hasson/Wong or Shapiro doesnt mean he has little experience-- just less than the TOP 3 docs above. Expertise/perfection comes with experience and those 3 have more than Lehr, hands down, because they have been in practice longer and had more cases. No doubt that Lehr is a good surgeon-- probably in the Top 25 but in my opinion I find it hard to think he's in H/W, Sharpiro's league right now (he has potential and might be getting there). But you wouldnt put Micheal Vick in the same league as John Elway or Dan Marino (or Allen Iverson in the same league as Majic or Micheal Jordan). In time Dr. Lehr might be in that level and according your your results and others-- it looks like he's heading in the right direction. Keep the hair growing and best of luck dude.
  17. Nobel Victim... I just had 3173 grafts by Dr. Hasson. The cost averaged $3.06 per graft based on H&W fees plus $400 credit on travel. Only thing not included is the stupid $700 sales tax I had to pay. You can do the math if you want to average that out. It's tough for me, I'm from Delaware where we have no sales tax! Point is, I got a superior procedure at a great price!
  18. Noble I know of Dr. Lehr. Of my 5 HT procedures, Dr. Norwood did 4 of them. He was the pioneer of HT for decades and was the Hasson/Wong/Sharpiro of his generation. He retired in the late 1990's. However, Dr. Lehr trained under Dr. Norwood the last 5 years before retirement. Then the last 2 years he became partners with Dr. Norwood and did most of the surgeries while Dr. Norwood focused on academics/teaching and getting ready for retirement. On my last 2 procedures in the mid 1990's with Dr. Norwood, Dr. Lehr assisted. Dr. Norwood did all the work, but on the last one, Dr.Lehr did the donor disection and closing of the donor site. From my experience(however indirect), Dr. Lehr seems like a very intellegent (I think he finished #1 in his medical school), very sencere about the patient, and at that time eager to learn as much as possible about HT. I dont think he has had any bad PR, and overall is probably an average physician with good potential. He's just younger then the H/W's and Shapiro's and hasnt done as many cases. In time, he might reach that top level. He probably has such a low price to draw in more patients and to draw people to Oklahoma? One good thing, when I flew there, I got a direct flight to Oklahoma City which was easier than I thought. Hope that helps, good luck, but dont decide on a doctor just based on price. Go for a consult, look at pics, and ask to see patients in person. Talk to him about future hairloss and check out his techniques.
  19. fantatstic results thus far! Are you using Minox? MSM or any other supplement to accelerate growth? ---------------------------------------------------------- 25 yrs old - 4,040 grafts - Dr. Hasson
  20. jontew... Dramatic change in just under 4 months...it looks like you were more advanced than a NW 5 in the before pic, but none of that NW stuff matters anymore, 'cause you're heading for the low or no NW's in a few months. Keep those suckers growin' Norwood 5 sucks...but 7 swallows HT Dr. Hasson 1/5/04 www.dtrojanz.com
  21. The point of this thread is to show coverage and growth from the largest single session ever performed in one day, not to critique the hair style. With that said, there are some that have taken "the mullet" to a new level of artistic expression so I'd appreciate it if you guys would chill on his personal choice of hairstyle. This patient has agreed to not only show his preliminary results but he has agreed to do so in "Full Monty" mode. I understand he will soon have it all chopped off though. Hairbgoin, Dr. Wong performed this procedure. I believe it was his first to take him into the 5K Club. Peace, Joe Tillman aka, Jotronic Hasson & Wong Carpe Capillus!! www.HassonandWong.com www.Jotowen.com Joe@HassonandWong.com 1.800.859.2266 All statements and opinions that I share are my own and are not necessarily shared by H&W. 22. donna, i'm just curious to see how your doing after the HT. all i can say is there are alot of mixed feelings toward DR.Jones. i was considering him as its close to home but there are way to many mixed opinions on him. now please remember that i'm a newbie but the people with the best feedback are the hasson&wong tag team duo. so far....
  23. Im sorry the reply I just posted was incorect.. It was not Dr.Hasson but Dr.Wong that replied.
  24. My doc told me to stop taking propecia, once i started the test therapy but my ht doc said do not stop taking propecia... and this is kind of funny as well are well known doc that we have learned to love and respect Dr.Hasson has finally replied to my concerns and said there would be no conflict between the 2 drugs.. Also Dr Ziering said the same thing.... just wanted to get a few different opinions. So now I am really confused.. Are these docs now just trying to make a buck? or are we answering posts based on what we think the outcome may be? and actually just giving an opinion.. The only reason I posted this quetion is because at the time the 3 docs I tried to contact had not yet replied. Still waiting for 1 more..And if any one would like to see the replies i did get from these docs leave your addy.
  25. Dr. Hasson has just asked me to post this on the boards as it is the latest study regarding Proscar and Prostate cancer. Prevention of Prostate Cancer with Finasteride: US/European Perspective. Thompson IM, Klein EA, Lippman SM, Coltman CA, Djavan B. University of Texas Health Science Center, Division of Urology, 7703 Floyd Curl Drive, 78229, San Antonio, TX, USA PURPOSE: Prostate cancer is the most common male cancer, affecting one man in six. Prevention of this disease, even in a subset of patients would have a significant impact on public health. The results of the National Cancer Institute-sponsored Prostate Cancer Prevention Trial demonstrate that finasteride causes a substantial risk reduction across all known risk groups. We herein amplify on the results of this trial to assist patients and physicians in reaching individualized decisions.MATERIALS AND METHODS: The results of the Prostate Cancer Prevention Trial were reviewed.RESULTS: The PCPT demonstrated a 24.8% reduction in prostate cancer risk with the administration of finasteride. High-grade cancers were noted in 6.4% of finasteride patients compared to 5.1% of men receiving placebo. The increase in high-grade tumors was seen within one year of finasteride exposure and did not increase over time. This observation, combined with previous evidence demonstrating an alteration in cytologic and architectural features of prostate cancer with hormonal therapy suggests that the differences in high-grade disease may be an artifact and that application of Gleason grading to these tumors may not be appropriate.DISCUSSION: Men should be presented the benefits and risks of taking finasteride and be assisted in integrating their sexual and urinary symptoms into their decision-making process. Blanket statements for or against the use of this medication ignore patient preferences and differential risk-benefit profiles from finasteride. PMID: 14644115 [PubMed - in process] -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Peace, Joe Tillman aka, Jotronic Hasson & Wong Carpe Capillus!! www.HassonandWong.com www.Jotowen.com 1.800.859.2266 All statements and opinions that I share are my own and are not necessarily shared by H&W.
