  1. Hello all, First, I hope this is the appropriate location for a "hey, just had a great consultation with a reputable doctor and am looking forward to the big day" post... Second, I wanted to, actually, thank everyone here and for that matter on several other forums for being willing to share your experiences and pictures so openly. You really helped me, a guy who's new to this and a little nervous about taking this kind of step, find someone he trusts. Which brings me to... THIS OLD SCALP: PLANNED RESTORATION A LA FELLER =============================================== As the last part of a great prolonged Memorial Day weekend full of biking, lots of time with my girlfriend, and hosting a big cookout on Monday, I made a road trip (actually, rail trip)up to NYC for my consultation with Dr. Feller. I was there early, being the over-cautious type who didn't want a train delay to mess things up, and he was glad to see me ahead of schedule. I could tell from his office that I liked the guy...professional but not "slick," if that makes any sense; it looked like the office fo someone who actually uses it for work and research rather than just for impressing clients. There was a long table covered with, er, hair-a-phenalia...mirrors, samples of the blades he uses (damn, that thing is tiny!) alongside more standard ones, purple markers for delineating the location of thousands (!) of hairs, and a monitor with literally hundreds of anonymous patient photos. He had me sit down, immediately walked over and took a closer look, and in about a minute said "OK, I'll tell you what I'm going to do." He commented on my vast donor area and, er, large head (it's true), and seemed enthusiasic that I had all the ingredients for an ideal scenario, and explained why. Background; started receding/thinning, more or less, around 21, and things have more or less leveled off by 36. Based on a prior consultation and research (and perhaps a little wishful thinking thrown in), I'm at the "Norwood 3v" stage, give or take a lowercase letter. What this means aesthetically is a really high forehead, which I've always had, coupled with lots of recession in the temples, and definite thinning at the top, and some at the crown. Creative combing, light skin and hair, and my hair's texture and behavior more or less work favorably, at least with what I have to work with. What Dr. Feller proposed was a 3-4000 graft approach that would lower the hairline at the front/temples (but not excessively, restore the temples, thicken the top all the way to the back. What he pointed out (this may or may not be relevant to someone) was that because my case was a "v-shaped" recession with the point of the "V" at the back of my head, it was more optimal than the reverse. Interesting point on the graft count; when I told him that a previous consult (which was actually with what I assume was the sales guy; the doctor stepped in for about 38 seconds...no, it wasn't Bosley or MHR ) suggested 1600, he was almost amazed..."I wouldn't touch you at that amount...it would be a waste." He pointed out that given the excellent scalp laxity/head size/volume of donor hair, a larger session would not only be entirely reasonable but would get considerable bang for the buck. He had quoted the 4000 as a benchmark, he said as well that more would be possible, if I were open to it. All of which I had suspected, reading about people who'd had transplants in the 4000 range and seeing their photos, and taking a less denial-based look at my own in places, chrome dome... I have to say that I was glad, going in, to meet Dr. Feller, having heard so many positive impressions, and liked him immmediately; he came across as someone who was confident, compassionate, very straightforward, and genuinely interested in helping his patients. He was willing to answer any and all questions and told me to call if I had more, and was thoughtful enough to recommend a plastic surgeon who as it turns out works about a block from my office to have the sutures/staples removed when the time comes. He also showed me his own transplants, which I would not have guessed were in fact transplants...a testament to the skill of his friend, as he called it, who I assume is one of the echelon of surgeons people have mentioned on this board. He also mentioned the names of several other well-known doctors to talk to -- Hasson and Wong and Seager, among them -- for second opinons, which may be a small thing and may be standard protocol, but to me was another positive; that he is confident enough and concerned enough about his patients' well being to encourage them to talk to colleagues. And apart from all the above, he just seems like a cool guy...had I met him in some other context, he struck me as someone I'd hang out with. Which is probably totally irrelevant to a medical procedure, but at least put me more at ease... I'll be glad to post pictures as things progress...looking forward to June 19! Benjamin
  2. Hank, Welcome to our community and thanks for sharing your positive experience. If you can post photos from your surgery and immediate post op results that would be much appreciated. Please understand that testimonial posts by first time unknown posters who do not provide photos are taken with a grain salt since some people have tried to use this forum simply to promote a particular surgeon. While I do think that Dr. Gabel does perform the most state of the art hair transplant procedure in Oregon, in my opinion, I do not think it is accurate to say that his clinic is the best in the North West. Hasson and Wong have a long history of performing large sessions of Ultra Refined Follicular Unit grafting with outstanding results. They also have hundreds of patient photos online to prove it. H & W and their consultant also take an educational approach when contacted by new potential patients. So I expect that your reference to a "high pressure salesman" with an out of state firm was not in reference to H & W. Best wishes for great growth. I hope that you will share photos of your results on this forum. Pat P.S. B ??“ Spot, We recently got some impressive photos from Dr. Gabel that will be added to his profile page on the Hair Transplant Network.
  3. Awhile back I asked the same question about shaving my head in order to get a HT. I currently have enough hair as to help cover any surgical footprint. Dr. Hasson weighed in for me with an informative response to say the least. And obviously I respect him and what he has done in the field and for his patients (Not to leave out Jerry, for some reason Hasson rolls off the tongue first and easily). However for someone like me, it would mean leaving my job. My contract says I can't alter my appearance even with a severe haircut, hair color, facial hair etc. So the alternative was a leave of absence, which if not for a family matter might not have been possible. Or to quit the job. While I could afford to be out of work for several months, there was no guarantee I could equal my situation. It took me awhile to find a six figure job I can do in 32 hours at night with complete benefits and security. I left my last career in order to pursue a creative endeavor that takes up my day hours. In short I was in a a bad spot if I wanted a HT. There are doctors (reputable ones) that don't necessarily need to shave you down. They come with reputations that speak for themselves and while not in agreement with some of the best, they themselves are also considered by many the best. So in my case, I just can't give it all up for a HT. It's either wait until I have a whole different situation, which could be years, or wait til I retire, at which point I'm not sure a HT is what I want then. Please, this is not to say that these doctors like Hasson are not the very best and will give you results like a Jotronic which is a flawless piece of work. But the idea of this forum first and foremost, in my opinion, is to relieve the stress which baldness and bad HTs cause. So when you finally find help it would be a shame to cause more stress for someone to tell them it's hopeless to keep your life the way you know it if you want a good procedure. My own stress doubled when I asked the question and was told it had to be that way. I went another route and am quite happy, went back to work in ten days and while it is still a bit too soon to scream from the mountain top, I've met quite a few others that went the same way and look so awesome I couldn't believe my eyes. This is not a cult. This is a place to meet your needs. And whatever that is, there's advice here to steer you in the right path.
  4. Steve, that's a great question. Funny you should ask it, because I intended to ask Dr. Hasson about it, but during our conversation there was an emergency and he had to leave abruptly (some patient wasn't feeling well). I will follow up with him later this week and post his reply. Cheers to you, too!
  5. BSpot, I do think it's safer to leave them in a few more days. Of course, I'm no doctor so for me it's mere conjecture or, at best, good logic. My thinking was largely base on my last HT: When I removed the staples on day 10, but I still felt a lot of tension in the back. My scalp was never particularly lax, and I can't imagine how leaving them in another 4 days wouldn't benefit me in giving the skin an opportunity to regain some more of its laxity. Which is why I was surprised when my plastic surgeon friend told me they routinely wait two weeks on head wounds. Dr Hasson completely agreed with the additional wait. I understand (don't we all) the eagerness to remove these horrible beasts from the back of our head. It is a mild form of torture to live with them. Sleep works only with 2 Tylenol D's every night (I ran out of Ambien). But right now I have only one more night to go!!!! Tomorrow morning at 9 AM I'm scheduled to head out. Can't believe it! In the end, I think it will prove to have been well worth the wait. Nor do I feel that after 10 days they "took root" or hurt any more than previously. Just the same old pain in the neck . . . or just above it. And don't envy me -- envy the dude who just got from Dr. Hasson 7,600 in one session, almost the same total as I now have! In fact, you and I can go out, have a drink, and envy him together (more like sulk together)!
  6. I updated my blog to include the new, HT #2 day 13 pics. All my scabs are now gone. Dr. Hasson agreed with my suggestion, and I'm leaving the staples in for two full weeks, out on day 15 (this Monday morning at 9 AM). My friend, a plastic surgeon, will be removing them for me. Incidentally, he told me that he routinely leaves head staples or sutures in for 2 weeks, whereas on other parts of the body they remove them after 7 or so days.
  7. Queezy, B spot hit the nail on the head with his comments. I couldn't find the post by Dr. Hasson but have copied it from another post for your reference............here it is: (by Dr. Hasson) There are multiple technical factors that come into play during the creation of recipient sites and the subsequent graft placement. These include: 1.) When thinning areas are shaved down the "thinning process" takes on a different meaning. With the use of magnification it will be seen that some follicular bundles are absent (and there are wider spaces between remaining bundles) and that some bundles are significantly miniaturized. It will then be possible to place new recipient sites in the place of absent bundles and alongside miniaturized bundles to recreate the density. This can also be done in a uniform manner so that if the pre-existing hair eventually disappears, due to progression of hairloss, the transplant can still look reasonably natural. If the recipient site is not shaved the surgeon must part through the hair again and again looking for any empty spaces and trying to fill the spaces as best as possible. This is not really as exact a process but much more hit or miss. 2.) The hair exits the scalp at an exact angle. The only way to precisely match that angle is to buzz the recipient hair down (in a way similar to how ALL doctors need to shave the donor hair when taking out the donor strip). 3.) Transection of existing hair below the skin surface is possible if the incisions are not made exactly parallel to the surrounding bundles. We often see this as a "halo" type effect when performing repair procedures. 4.) When inserting grafts the technicians can easily identify the recipient sites and ensure that all sites are filled. This can be achieved with no trauma to the pre-existing hair. 5.) When hair is buzzed no manipulation of the pre-existing hair is required at all. When the hair is not shaved it needs to be combed through (hundreds of times) by the physician who makes the recipients sites and again by the technician who places the grafts into the sites. This repetitive trauma of combing through the hair again and again will result in "hair shock", a shedding of the existing hair. When this hair falls out in 2 to 3 weeks there will be a 2 to 3 month wait before it returns. Whereas if the hair were buzzed it would grow from day one 1 and keep growing. A number 3 buzz cut often will look good at 10 to 14 days post operatively and blend in with the recipient site well. All these factors are relatively unimportant if you are trying to place to 2 or 3 hundred grafts into recipient sites however if you wish to have the utmost of refined results the difference is night and day. _______________________________________________ Queezy- I went through the same thing this past February when considering my HT. I work in a professional environment.......suit/tie.....every day. No one I work with knows of my HT. I took 12 days off, clipped all hair short to blend with the top after the HT and I've never had an issue with it. It's just hair.....it'll grow back and I doubt anyone will remember you cut it short. We're our own worst critics and much more interested in ourselves and how we look than anyone else.
  8. I got to speak with Dr. Hasson about it yesterday. He told me that he bases his confidence in Dutasteride/Avodart on their own patients: Of the approximately 100 patients they currently have on Avodart, there is one reported complaint, involving nipple tenderness. Growth seems to be solid across the board. I know Dr. Hasson to be a straight-shooter, not a salesman. On several occasions he has voiced crisp criticism of his own work, including certain parts of my pre-op HT #2 hairline last week (which I believe I damaged by using a piece after HT #1). Therefore, when he makes a strong statement I trust him. I am now more hopeful and confident that Avodart will work.
  9. That's so similar to my second HT just last week, HB. I got 3537. Dr. Hasson said I had good donor hair but only average laxity. And, as in your case, my strip included the old scar, so I ended up with just shy of your number!
  10. This patient started out in the mid-nineties with about 400 mini grafts. He then went on to get 2600 FUE 19 months ago and 8 months ago he opted for a megasession with Dr. Hasson. The first and last photos were not taken by our clinic. The middle photo was pre-op to his session with us. He's come a long way for sure! Don't forget to enlarge the photo once it opens.
  11. Queezy, let me start by saying that it is not necessary to shave your head for a transplant. However, if you wish to pack grafts at a density greater than 25 fu's per cm/2, you absolutely need to shave the recipient area. For those who want the BEST results, this is not really an issue, simply because without shaving your head, your risk of transection substantially increases, which diminishes yield. I will find a link to a post by Dr. Hasson detailing this very issue and post it for you.
  12. Hello everyone, this is my first time posting. I am considering a HT,my goal is to reach extreme density in front area where my hair is thinning. I have a lot of hair there currenttly and want to have the suregery in order to bring it back to where was 10 yrs ago. I've been told that I have an exceptional donor area and that my goal is definitely attainable. I have been looking at several diffrent surgeons. My question is not so much in their abilities but the surgery process itself. One of them (Dr. S Khan) says that she does not need to shave the receiving area but Dr Hasson says that in order to achieve the density that I want the area has to be shaved; one for quality and two so as to not to damage any of the existing hair. Being in the entertainment industry, the diffrence in shaving or not shaving makes a huge impact on my decision making. It is difference of whether I'll be out of commission for three to four or not. Opinions please....... I live in Vancouver and Dr Hasson has a very good reputation, I'm just a lottle confused about the diffrences in the procedure itself....

  14. Archy: Thank you sir! Congrats...you beat me out by 40 grafts you dog! I believe you are going to be amazed at the new you...enjoy the ride. Excellent choice going with H&W. Dr.Hasson is an amazing surgeon. I'm sure Joe, Mike Ferko and the staff treated you as they do with everyone....nothing short of perfection from beginning to end. I'm happy for you. the B spot: You are welcome! Everyday I get to wake up and look at my "bed head"...something I haven't had in quite a while. Now, every day is a "good hair day"...because I've got it now. That bald guy in the rear view mirror is GONE! Best of luck to you!
  15. Eman, More than likely(Joe can chime in to verify for sure), Dr. Hasson harvested as many as he safely could and came up with this number. It purely depends on scalp laxity and donor hair density per sq. cm. Dr. Wong did my second HT and I told him to swing for the fence on the graft harvest.........he got 3886. My laxity and density were good, but, this was my 2nd HT so keep in mind the old scar from 1st HT was harvested as well so I likely gave up 500 or so grafts. I believe the average maximum harvest is around 3500 grafts. These results are great but not as dramatic as some of the other 5000+ mega sessions shown here. It appears this guy wanted great density in the front........which he no doubt has. Many who have barely any hair in the frontal 1/3 have received in the 3000-4000 graft range and have pulled off the appearance of density. My post isn't meant to take away from this fella's results, they're solid. Just pointing out that, IMO, there are many who have had loss like this who have received 1/2 the grafts and come out looking great.
  16. hey joe, great results. did the patient request this size of session? looking at the before pictures, his needs look similar to mine and I was quoted about 2300 to 2500 less by dr. wong. Just curious. Does a patient ask a doctor for more than what was estimated or did dr. hasson just get more grafts out of the strip?
  17. Bobman I think it looks fantastic. I'm at the 5 week mark today for a 4889 graft with Dr. Hasson. Can't wait to see it start coming in. Major glad I went to Vancouver and had it done. If it wasn't for this forum I would have gone to Nashville and had it done at PAI. So glad I found this place.
  18. 6022 grafts in one session by Dr. Hasson & team. No sprays, no voodoo, just great growth from a great hair transplant at only six months. Angles of the hairline are plainly visible and are in the correct direction and angle. Grafts were placed in the front half of the scalp for high density in the entire area. The crown was not touched but has improved since the patient began Proscar a day after surgery. Donor was closed with tricho.
  19. From my visit with Dr. Epstein and what i have read and seen here i think he usually doesnt do less than 1700 and more than 2200-2300 grafts a session. If you want a mega session you should look into Hasson and wong. Jojotronic (sp) said his donor hair wasnt much but his results are incredible. Not to say that Dr. E work isnt great bc you can tell by all the pics on his website and ppl here that he does very good work but doesnt do megasessions.
  20. Some of you have said that traveling to Vancouver to Hasson/Wong would be the best bet. Can someone who has done this explain how it is accomplished. I mean do you stay there for a few days in a hotel? I would think flying right after a mega-HT would be difficult and maybe dangerous. If you do go home right away, what if something happens (bleeding, unusual pain, etc.)and you need to see the doctor. How is all this handled? I am also condidering Dr. Rassman in LA. How does he rate?
  21. Dr. Hasson wanted my crown area (not covered in surgery) to become thicker. I'm eager to hear from anyone else who has switched what their experience has been.
  22. After my recent surgery, Dr. Hasson had me switch from Propecia, which I've been taking successfully for the last 10 or 15 years, to Avodart. Have any of you made the change? If so, what difference did you experience?

  24. Patient is eight months post op. He came in and realized we had an opportunity so we grabbed the ether rag and the clippers. Here is the result. http://www.hassonandwong.com/Video/trichoshave.wmv
  25. Dr.Hasson did a great job on you!!! One cannot imagine how many lives he has changed and will continue to change. I know my life is for all the better because of him. Every time his results blow me away...and on top of all that...his consistant professionalism of his business and how things run show how his attention to details ripple throughout. I cannot wait to watch your transformation with HT #2 and the trico-scar. Happy healing!
