Journey & Decision After thorough research, I decided to pull the trigger and get a HT at Shapiro Medical Group with Ron Shapiro and Dr. Josephitis/Dr. Joe. SMG spent many hours over the phone with me and answered all my questions. I emailed Ron Shapiro directly and Matt Zupan (Patient Educator), and they always addressed all of my concerns/follow-ups. Matt called me very frequently to check up on me and has pretty much become a friend at this point. The front office staff, Matt Zupan (Patient Educator), and everyone involved wanted to make sure that I had the best care.

Am I a bad hair transplant candidate?
Melvin-Moderator replied to BeadHead's topic in Hair Restoration Questions and Answers
Dr. Konior is largely referred to as one of the best surgeons in the world. That said, for your case, you’d be better served with a clinic that specializes in megasession FUTs. I would also consult with Dr. Hasson and Wong. Take a look at Dr. Shapiro as well. My advice is submit several consultations with as many as possible. Thanks for arranging this, Melvin. Here is a question... Many with advanced Norwood, are concerned with maximizing lifetime donor grafts; it is this question on which many are trying to gain clarity. I was wondering if you have a stance on this topic of whether FUE alone could harvest the same amount of grafts in a lifetime versus doing FUT or combining FUT and FUE over the course of more than one surgery? I have heard some surgeons say that with advanced hair loss, in order to harvest the most grafts in a lifetime, it is best to start with FUT and later do FUE.

How many of you left the crown alone??
DenverBuff1989 replied to Westview's topic in Hair Restoration Questions and Answers
from my own personal experience, its not that I don't want coverage, but that doctors are hesitant to operate on it. Many balding crowns still have a bit of hair that covers it. The worry is that by adding grafts to the crown, this can permanently shock loss the hair thats already in there, negating any positive effect. Furthermore, crown loss can enter its "final balding phase" later than the hairline. Someone who has a decently balding crown at 30 and gets operated on, can end up with massive crown loss throughout their 30s, necessitating the chase of further HTs. Dr. Diep, Dr. Harris, -
Yikes, the graft placement looks utterly unnatural and it looks like you got some pitting going as well. Do not go back to this clinic, don't even reply to their phone calls. You need repair work asap in my opinion. If you're in the midwest then either go to Dr. Ron Shapiro in Minneapolis who is renowned for his hairlines or Dr. Konior in Chicago.

Oh yeah, Dr. Shapiro is renowned for his hairlines. Dr. Cooley is great as well, definitely consult with both! -
UNNATURAL HAIRLINE - REPAIR NEEDED

This is an easy fix, but only in the best of hands. I'd definitely consult with Dr. Shapiro since hairlines are his speciality. I think you'll need to punch out (via FUE) some of the poorly angled grafts on the sides, but fortunately I don't see too many multi-haired grafts in the hairline. The frontal tuft needs a boost in density, and the hairline is a bit too straight. But again, this wouldn't be a difficult case for the docs you're consulting with. -
You're speaking to my soul man haha, I know all of those feels. I have the sides near the crown thin, so even parting my hair to the side looks a bit strange. I definitely need to get this addressed ASAP. I will follow your progress, Dr. Shapiro actually helped kick start this forum by doing @Pat - Community Publisher hair transplant over 20 years ago.

Dr. Cooley and Shapiro are both excellent choices. I think they would easily be able to refine this result. I will say this, it honestly isn’t that bad, a little too straight. But it would be easy to fix. Feel free to submit consultations using our link below: https://www.hairtransplantnetwork.com/Consult-a-Physician/hair-transplant-surgeons.asp

After speaking with Dr. Konior and Dr. Nadimi this weekend, Dr. Konior mentioned a study conducted by Dr. Ron Shapiro, an elite surgeon who actually kick started this community by performing surgery on @Pat - Community Publisher the study concludes that patients who start off with FUT first and combine FUE get more lifetime grafts than either technique alone. I thought it was pretty interesting, especially for those interested in maximizing donor supply. https://www.ishrs-htforum.org/content/htfi/29/5/local/front-matter.pdf

Is this how incisions are made?
aaron1234 replied to MachoVato's topic in Hair Restoration Questions and Answers
For docs who give a shit, yes. Here's a video of the great Dr. Ron Shapiro making hairline incisions, around the 1:45 mark. -
That's a great question, I may reach out to Dr. Ron Shapiro @Dr. Ron Shapiro to get his input. He really is such a talented surgeon, there haven't been any studies on this scale done before.

When I got my first 3 HT's I still had a lot of native hair remaining, so any loss I had since then would be very difficult to say whether it was the native or transplanted hair that thinned (maybe a little bit of both?). My first strip was taken fairly high (as determined by Dr. Ron and Paul Shapiro) so if I did lose some transplanted hair it could be because of that. But I also have some retrograde alopecia, so if I lost transplanted hair it could because of that as well. Or maybe I didn't lose the transplanted hair at all and it was native... again, impossible to say with 100% certainty.

@anotherhairlosssufferer I'll check my math again. If I am wrong, I'll correct it. EDIT: To be clear, graft survival and transection loss are two different things. Dr. Diep does two things well: Hairlines placement Produces excellent yield (graft survival) Believe it or not, even I was slapped around for giving that praise for Dr. Diep. But just take a look at the donors of Dr. Diep FUE patients. Then take a look a FUE patients of other doctors of similar graft amounts. You'll notice the difference by eye test. If you saw this thread before it was taken down, you'd h

Not to be be rude, but Diep's donor site always look terrible. My FUE punches were already closing after one day and on the 4th day, you could barely even tell they were present. 4 days for you is a much different story than my own experience. But results talk, and Diep achieves high/mass volume. Even Dr. Shapiro said Diep is capable of high density transplants. Ethics are a different story though with Diep though based on my own experience... That is partly why I went to SMG as they were more honest with me.

Konoir and his disciples all win the FUE Donor "Like a Virgin" Award: Gabel & Nadimi. Nadimi's hair lines appear as if she apprenticed with Mother Nature instead of Konoir. She is one of the few surgeons that does both the excisions and grafting. Although, she might be on the conservative side and I am thinking that is because she does 100% of the work and might not take big jobs? I am a big fan of Dr. Hasson's work, and I am going to stoned as i say this, not so much of Dr. Wong's work. But it is too much of a hassle to go to Canada now anyway. Read @hybonix's thread. FUT suggestions
aaron1234 replied to fito88's topic in Hair Transplant Experiences and Surgeon Reviews
Look into Dr. Ron Shapiro in Minneapolis and Dr. Konior in Chicago. Two of the best in the biz. -
Here is an objective take: Dr. Diep has poor donor management technique. He uses 1mm punches, which is no longer considered best practice by any top clinic in the world. With advancements in technique and surgical expertise, 0.8mm punches provide adequate clearance of the follicle in the vast majority of patients, which minimizes donor harm and scarring. Diep universally uses 1mm punches on all his patients. By his own words, specifically in Baldlivesmatter's post, he says he intentionally harvests one side of the donor area before going to the other side. Look at every single FUE ca

I'm 16 hours removed from surgery with Dr. Ron Shapiro. Apologies in advance if this is scattered, the drugs are still treating me nicely Posted 2 pictures. Please be gentle, as I'm still beat up and my head looks kind of messy. I'm feeling surprisingly well. I woke up this more with some tenderness but no legitimate pain and no bleeding. Of course, this could change. I'll plan to share progress and pictures regularly for anyone that's interested. 9/28: Pre Op Consult: Traveled from New York to Minneapolis on Monday and went directly to Dr. Ron's office for a consultatio

So happy for you, @hybonix! What a great write-up, this forum owes you! 👏 You did it right by going to SMG/Dr. Shapiro for your first procedure, something I wish I did. Rest well these next few nights, propping your head up with pillows. I never sleep well after a transplant, I just wake up every hour or so and saline spray the recipient region. It looks like you are fortunate enough to have held on to your crown somewhat so stay on Fin if you can. I know you just started it, so you might even see a boost in your crown in a year as well which would be icing on the cake. Keep in mind
