  1. Thank you for your response Dr. Keller, How many grafts were used specifically in the crown?

My Experience with Dr Richard S. Keller

@chicago2017 and all, While I can appreciate that you are unhappy with your results, we have yet to see any real good photos showing your crown and mid scalp. I do agree with you that Dr. Keller should have posted more photos of the midsection from the top down angle and to your crown since that’s where the grafts were transplanted. However, I suggest that you take some realistic photos under natural lighting rather than extremely harsh lighting which always makes it results look worse than it is. Honestly, the crown and midsection according to the photos I’ve seen do look improved and given your level of baldness, I’m not surprised that you don’t have more density. In my opinion, you have got an a great start with 3000 grafts and if you want to get another procedure, you can obtain more density. While I reserve my final comments until I see more accurate photos of your crown and midsection after surgery, I am inclined to agree that your expectations may have been too high. The reality is, with your level of boldness, there’s no way that 3000 graphs will give you the kind of density that you want. I have had to undergo 4 hair transplant procedures in order to get the results I have and I still have thinning areas in the crown. Some people may be unhappy with the results I have if their expectations were to achieve a full, thick head of hair like the high school glory days. But I’m very happy with my results and most people don’t even know I’ve ever experienced any thinning hair. However, I’m confident in the way my hair looks now so I will even show people my crown my putting my head down and people saying, oh yeah I guess it’s a little thinner there but it still looks good. Considering I would be completely bald without my hair transplants, I am very happy with my results. But I also had to be realistic with what could be achieved on a Norwood five A with 9600 grafts. The reality is, it would take 22,000+ grafts (50,000 hairs) all over the top of a completely bald scalp in order to achieve for density. And this is not realistic because we don’t have that many available grafts in our donor area. It would take approximately 11,000 grafts to achieve The “illusion of density” which means it will appear thick under normal lighting but under harsh lighting, it will still appear thinner. So I think you can imagine that only 3000 grafts placed in a large area of baldness such as the crown which is considered a black hole for grafts and the midsection which is a very large area simply will not achieve the kind of density and coverage you want in a single procedure. You or others might wonder why other positions might have had what looks like better results with the same number of graphs and a similar balding area. I’ll people also have to understand that hair caliber, shaft diameter, thickness, Color, hair to scalp color contrast ratio, placement of the grafts, area of the scalp where they are transplanted, etc. all play a vital role in achieving this illusion of density. So if you take this post seriously and really analyze and evaluate what you have versus what can be achieved, I think you’ll see that they are pretty much in line. Now personally, I think doctors should do a better job explaining this to patients and even let their patients now that they will likely require more than a single procedure to meet their goals if they want a thicker looking head of hair. However, part of the purpose of this community is to help educate patients so they can do their research before they undergo surgery. I wish I could’ve personally explained all this to you before you underwent surgery and maybe would have a different outlook today on your results. Maybe would’ve prepared like me knowing that you would’ve had to go for more than one procedure to meet your goals. So like I said, I’d still like to see better photos not under harsh lighting as I explained above about the illusion of density, harsh lighting will impact what the result looks like and its simply not a fair comparison. That said, I’m still inclined to agree that your expectations may have been too high which is why you’re not happy with what you have right now. At the end of the day, whether you are happy or not, to achieve more thickness and density, you will require another procedure. This should have been explain to from the beginning. Hopefully it was. Best wishes, Bill
  3. @chicago2017, Since Dr. Keller may not see this post for awhile, feel free to post your own photos showing your results and share a detailed account of your experience. I understand you didn’t get grafts put into the hairline, but the mid section and crown look good according to the above photos. If you can take photos of your scalp from the top down or of the crown alone, we’d be able to provide our comments based on your photos as well. Best wishes, Bill P.S. I’ve take the liberty of editing Dr. Keller’s post to remove the part about the frontal area being transplanted.
  4. 63 year old with a class 6 hair loss pattern who wished to have a more youthful appearance. The patient states he is extremely happy with his 1 year results and his wife is ecstatic with his new look. Patient has previously been on medical therapy without much success. Photos shown are pre-op, intra-op, and 1 year post-op using 3,650 FU. Comments welcome. Dr. Keller
  5. Hi Dr. Keller, According to the patient his front hairline was not transplanted. I recommend removing that portion of your post and leaving just the “thicken the midscalp and crown” portion. Also, I recommend posting some photos of the crown and top down view, so we can appropriately gauge the results. Thank you for your participation and presentation.
  6. Patient is a 48 year old who had 3,615 FU transplanted. A modified trichophytic closure was performed because the wishes to wear his hair short. The patient's hair will thicken over the next 4 months. Photos shown are pre-op, 8 months post-op & post-op donor scar. I will post his 12 month photos. Regards, Dr. Keller
  7. 35 year old patient with a class 5A hair loss pattern wished to have a conservative hair restoration because of his family history of class 6 hair loss. Photos shown are planning stage, pre-op, intra-op & 6 months post-op. Hair is cut very short with no visible scarring. Patient just finished his shedding phase and is starting the regrowth phase. 3334 FU were utilized. Lateral framework was created due to the patient's wide forehead. I will post the patient's 12 month photos. We welcome Dr. Aranas to the practice. He will be a great asset for our patients. Regards, Dr. Keller
  8. I am 29 yrs old and I have been losing hair for about 10 yrs. I was on minoxdil on and off and also used propecia for about 6 months. I had full head of hair until 2015, I stopped the medication and pretty started shedding crazy after few months, now in 2018 I am diagnosed with Norwood V and becoming Norwood 6. My dad has a Norwood 6 pattern baldness and my grandfather on mother side has decent hair at his age and at Norwood 4. My progression of hair loss seems to be going towards Norwood 6 and matches more with my Dad. I have so far discussed with Dr.Bhatti, Dr. Suneet Soni and Dr Agrawal via emails, and in person with Dr.Paine and Dr.Allan Parungao. I have also scheduled appointment with Dr. Keller next month. All doctors are suggesting that an FUE can extract about 2200 - 2800 grafts, and 3000 - 3500 FUT method. At this point. I need some suggestions on which doctor can get be the best results based on a Norwood V - VI pattern. If I choose to do future transplant, is it preferable to do FUT first and then FUE later? This is going to be my first HT and I want to make the best of my donor area, please suggest what would be the best approach. My goal is to achieve a conservative hairline with decent density than an aggressive hairline but less dense hair. I usually style my hair moderately short e.g. 3-4 size and like to spike the frontal hair.
  9. I am 24 years old, and have been thinning from the age of 20. I have done countless hours of research and have tried every known remedy to man (natural and unnatural) to slow down my hair loss: (LLLT, Minoxidil, Finasteride, Saw Palmetto, Biotin, Hair/Skin/Nails pills, Omega 3's, DHT blocking Shampoos, Dermal Rolling, Diet changes, Snake oil products and all sorts of other oils.) Of course when nothing worked, similar to many men before me, I looked into surgery as an option and spent countless hours researching Dr.'s looking for FUE/Strip, scars, hairline, density, and the most natural looking results. I narrowed it down to three surgeons: I've met Dr. Katona (Restore), Dr. Keller (North Shore Hair Translplant), and finally Dr. Panine with Chicago Hair Transplant Clinic. Each gave me a consultation regarding my situation and explained what I could come to expect. Considering my line of work as a Nurse, I know my Dr. "types." I can tell when a surgeon is all marketing gimmicks or treats their patients like a conveyor belt, and charges more for less results (Restore). Or whether their living in the past, not up to date on more modern/advanced procedures, biased in opinion, stubborn on their own methods (Dr. Keller). Or if they are actually open to their patients INDIVIDUAL situations, goals, and presented with the best options to accomplish them. Dr. Panine was the obvious choice. The choice was as simple as his decades of experience, track record of great results, willingness to update his approach with the times, his Individualistic nature towards his patients, willingness to answer any questions you have, his price point, and of course his artistic ability (which is a HUGE factor that many surgeons lack). I can't explain how happy I am that I made that decision because it's safe to say that surgery was a breeze, his surgical assistants were cute, and I was kept comfortable and relaxed throughout the entire procedure, and there is virtually no scarring. I'm so thankful to Stuart for his support and communication, as he was my go to man when I needed anything or any information regarding pre and post op expectations, and when to come in for followups. But most importantly the thing we are all eagerly looking to get out of our hair transplants... RESULTS. And Dr. Panine Delivered! I'll let the pictures speak for themselves: Pre Op Post Op 7months Post Op Outdoor Lighting Indoor Lighting And stay tuned for my 1 year Post Op results!
  10. Dr. Richard Keller

    Richard Keller, MD./Chicago/NSHTS/3,650 FU

Hello, Thank you for the positive comments. The patient is very happy with his results. 3650 follicular units were utilized due to the patient's donor laxity and the his budget for the procedure. Melvin, approx. 900 FU were placed in the crown region to match existing hairs. 6000-8000 follicular units are not possible in one session unless you split the follicular units into smaller grafts. If you split the follicular units into smaller grafts you could injure the follicular sub-structures, which decrease the longevity and survival of those grafts. Approx. 10,000 follicular units exist in the donor region. Donor laxity does not allow 8000 true follicular units to be extracted in most patients-this would cause donor depletion, which would not allow for future restoration if the patient continues to lose hair. I consider the patient's family history an important part of his plans. My results made a great improvement in this patient's overall appearance. Regards, Dr. Keller
  11. 40 year old who is 6 months post-op with a class 5V hair loss pattern. Patient has temple hair regression, no temporal parietal angles and a scant double frontal tuft, which creates the image of a very large forehead. He also has a very large crown area. Moving approximately 1/3 of his safe donor area without signs of donor thinning was accomplished with a 2 layer donor closure and artistic feathering and placement of the follicles. 3233 follicular units were utilized. Photos show pre-op and 6 months post-op. Patient is very pleased with his results. I will post the patient's results at 12 months. Regards, Dr. Keller
  12. This 32 year old patient received 3213 follicular units. He has a family history of a class 5 hair loss pattern. The transplanted hair is not even 1/2 shaft thickness, since he is only 4 months post-op. We are looking forward to his 6 and 12 month follow-ups. Photos shown are pre-op and 4 months post-op. I will post again at 12 months. Regards, Dr. Keller
  13. Fantastic results Dr. Keller, keep up the good work.
  14. That guy is one sexy mofo. Dr. Keller did a great job.
  15. This patient has a strong family history of hair loss, so he waited for hair restoration until his hair loss slowed down in his forties. The patient wanted a strong frontal hairline, mid scalp density and thickening of his crown. Patient is extremely happy with his results and wears his hair on the shorter side. 4018 follicular units were utilized. Pictures shown are pre-op and 5 months post-op. I will post his 12 month follow up. Regards, Dr. Keller
  16. Dynamic 25 year old man with a Class 4A hair loss pattern who requested frontal hair restoration. Patient expressed a desire to have a competitive edge in business with a great hairline. Photos shown are pre-op and 6 months post-op. 3,314 follicular units were utilized. I will post his 1 year results to demonstrate his progress.
  17. I have a consultation with Dr. Keller scheduled for Saturday. I have seen that he is recommended here but have only seen transplant results that he has posted and would like to hear about others' personal experiences. I have never had a hair transplant and would like to fill in my receding hairline. My hair loss has been stabilized for years and I feel that it is now time to fill it in. Additionally, I am interested in receiving feedback about important questions that I should ask him during the consultation. I have a list of questions already, but would love to add more from the seasoned pros. No disrespect to Konior fans, but I am not interested in pursuing his assistance due to the wait and potential cost. Don't worry, I am in no way looking for a budget transplant. I've seen other people ask about Keller or Panine only to see the thread be derailed into talks about Konior and I am really seeking feedback about Keller, specifically. Thank you in advance!
  18. 56 year old female was cleared for hair restoration. 2,275 follicular units were utilized to provide more density and a youthful hairline. Photos shown are pre-op and one year post-op.
  19. Looks good Dr. Keller, he no longer has a bald spot which I’m sure he’s ecstatic about. Best wishes, Bill
  20. Despite what seems to be tons of forum posts and different sites, there seems to be absolutely no consensus on surgeons, and more annoying then that, no one mentions price. One thing i've noticed is people hardly ever say how much they paid in their threads. Despite this being such a critical factor - none of us want to pay over the odds. The prices seem to vary so much. I'm in the UK - is it worth travelling abroad? Well,i don't know, because virtually every single patient who has posted on here doesn't say how much he paid. all i'm trying to do is find a list of surgeons in the UK and Europe, who have a good catalogue of testimonials, a good website showing all the testimonials, HOw much i'd expect to pay, the doctors and their names, and what is charged per graft (i want FUT for definite). I've spent in total maybe 8 hours over the last 3 weeks on this website, and i've struggled to actually produce a short list of doctors to check out in europe. Can anyone help? can we make THIS thread THE thread for a list of recommended surgeons for Uk and Europe Only? with Who the name was of the doctor, how much you paid, and the name of the clinic and any associated website? or if that thread already exists, please can someone direct me to it? i don't get why no one mentions the price. Its suurely a critical factor in deciding - obviously we all want a quality result, and i'm prepared to pay for a good result - but if there is a doctor in turkey who can do a great job for half the price of someone in the UK, then i'd consider travelling. please help?! for the record, i'm 31, a Norwood 3, have good donor area (from a few consultations i had back in 2014 and a few online ones). So i know what i'm looking for, it just seems like such a difficult task to find it! FUT is definitely what i want. so far i've looked at - Vinci hair clinic - they don't mention any of the doctors. I have a consultation with them in birmingham in a few weeks. No idea on price, i've asked them to give me approximation. - Dr Feriduni quoted 9.8k to 13k for 1800-2400 FU in a day, using FUE - i've asked them to give a quote for FUT as that's what i specified in their online form, so they just ignored this (annoying), but no response so far. - A trans friend of mine recommended Dr. Richard Rodgers who came to the Sk:n clinic in nottingham to perform the HT - and paid 5500 GBP for just over 2500 grafts - this is my first choice at the moment. - BHR clinic and Dr Bisanga - consultation booked in for May when he comes to London. I've asked how much they charge and will report back here. - elate health UK, Dr. Max Malik - looks promising, appears to have all the credentials, a few before and after photos on the website with 23-2500 grafts showing exactly what i want (similar norwood 3 patients). Arranging a consultation. I'll continue to add to this original post more as a list to myself than anything but hopefully it helps others - and please, if you can provide recommended doctors here, please say how much they charge and evidence of their work - UK + EUrope doctors Only please! thank you
  21. 34 year old patient with a class 5V hair loss pattern was requesting hair restoration with hairline reconstruction and realistic appearing density. Much attention was given to the creation of the temporal parietal angles to match the patient's natural facial framework. Reasonable crown restoration was given to the crown & lateral humps to anticipate future hair loss. 3286 FU were utilized. The patient brought earlier photos to ensure that I would evaluate his goals and expectations. The photos shown are pre-op and 11 months post-op. This patient is extremely pleased with his results. Regards, Dr. Keller
  22. Hi Everyone - first time poster. I am a 32yom Norwood IV/IVa in the Chicago area considering FUE. Given my work schedule, I unfortunately have a very limited time period that I can get the procedure performed. I have searched the forums and understand that the recommended doctors are Drs. Konior, Keller, and Panine. Dr. Konior is no longer taking new consultation dud to his wait period. He has recommended Dr. Nadimi - I have not had a consultation and understand that she is new. I have consulted with RESTORE under Dr. Katona - and overall had a positive experience with realistic expectations and a price point that was within range (2000 FUE for approximately 12K). There have been no recent reviews of his work or discussion outside of him working on celebrities (Urlacher, Deion Sanders, Ryne Sandberg, etc). I was hoping people could comment on their experience with RESTORE, what are any hesitations going with them, and value (price for quality) relative to the others. Comments on the others would also be appreciated: 1. Dr. Katona/RESTORE 2. Dr. Nadimi (pricing same as Konior?, results?) 3. Dr. Keller 4. Dr. Panine
  23. 32 year old patient who is 7 months post-op. Patient has a strong family history of hair loss and was concerned about his frontal hairline regression, which makes the appearance of his forehead more prominent. Photos shown are pre-op and 7 months post-op. 3100 follicular units were utilized. Regards, Dr. Keller
  24. Thanks for the compliment brahmabull117. Finasteride starts stabilizing the hair in 3-6 months/ most agree that 8-12 months is an approriate time to see consistent results. My patients who have no side effects after 3 months are followed at 6 months and 12 months. Those patients that have no side effects after 1 year are much less likely to have side effects in my clinical practice. I see everyone every year and request self monitoring monthly after that by agreement. What is your age? You are welcome to email photos for my review or schedule a complimentary patient/physician consultation. Regards, Dr. Keller
  25. 28 year old with a 5V hair loss pattern received 3,505 FU. Photos shown are pre-op and one year post -op. The patient is very pleased with his results. Regards, Dr. Keller
