Advice for Hair Loss Sufferers Considering Hair Transplant Surgery

  1. I was in fact not so interested in FUE until I saw not only Dr. Reddy's results but his hair yield per graft based on his cherry picking and the density he gets as a result with relatively low # of grafts. I was originally scheduled for a FUT with Dr. Rahal but had to cancel due to family matter and now with a little more time to consider am thinking that a 2500 no scar FUE might yield more or less the same amount of hairs as a 4k FUT would without a scar and leaving me more donor for a second ht. Though I have diffuse crown thinning as well, I am leaving that to a year of Finasteride (just started) and going to go for a good hairline and it looks to me like Dr. Reddy can do a lot with say 2500 FUE there. I've subsequently looked into Dr. Bisanga, Dr. Feriduni and Dr. Shapiro but none (to my eye) have as nice hairlines and none seem to get the same hair yield per graft that Dr. Reddy does.
  2. Is Dr. Reddy starting to get on the radar of recommended FUE Surgeons?
  3. Hi ready4Hair, You are considering two excellent ht physicians, both with generally solid track records. But I wonder if maybe you aren't presenting yourself with a false equivalency by equating a 3,000 - 4,500 graft FUT outcome with a 2,000 - 2,5000 graft FUE outcome. If anything, it takes more FUE grafts than FUT grafts for a comparable result, not the other way around. I understand your point about cherry-picking multi-hair follicular units via FUE, but that isn't likely to close the gap in yield and coverage of an additional 1,000 - 2,500 grafts harvested via strip and dissected under a microscope. I also think maybe your'e not completely understanding what the determines the size of a strip taken and the appearance of the resulting scar. There are two components to a strip -- length and width. The length of the strip is usually about the same whether the target is 2,500 grafts or 4,500 grafts, for example. The width of the strip taken is generally the differentiating factor between a smaller FUT session and a larger one. However, a wider strip doesn't necessarily equate to a wider scar. The keys are the amount of scalp laxity the patient has and the surgeon's ability to close the wound without tension. I suppose what I'm saying is that as between a Rahal FUT and a Reddy FUE, you should probably consider a comparable numbers of grafts in making your choice. Dr. Reddy is conservative with the number of grafts he will transplant per FUE surgery. My sense is that you would require two FUE surgeries by Dr. Reddy to achieve the density you could expect to achieve from a 4,000 - 4,5000 strip transplant performed by Dr. Rahal (assuming your scalp laxity and donor density allow for a strip procedure of that magnitude). Just my 2 cents. Good luck!
  4. After doing extensive research I have ended up with these two Drs. (yes I considered Dr. Hasson,Bisanga, etc). I have recession and then diffuse thinning in the crown (the latter I am willing to live with and/or address with Finasteride which I am back on for the last 3 months and/or do a second HT later). Right now I want to fix the hairline and behind. Dr. Rahal does amazing hairlines, yet I haven't seen as good results with FUE. I am not totally against FUT but clearly would prefer FUE if possible. I have seen some extraordinary FUE results from Dr. Reddy, and his hairline and temple restoration is also outstanding (I'd say on par if not even superior to Dr. Rahal) He also seems to have perfected 'cherry picking' FUE and also gets a higher yield specifically because he harvests 2-4 hair FUs (and of course 1s for hairline). I like the thought of that because my donor hair (to my eye/hand) has some areas that would be great for hairline that might be below the strip and also because I'd prefer if possible to take hairs that still have color (I am salt and pepper). I am not so worried about nape loss as i am 54 and my nape has always been strong, and it is doubtful it is or will thin. In any event, I am looking for some feedback. Dr. Rahal is great choice to be sure but I'd say given the results I've seen I'd be looking at 3k-4.5 FUT which is no small FUT scar, whereas with Dr. Reddy I am thinking 2-2.5k FUE would be in order. I am also slightly concerned about a couple bad recent results from Dr. Rahal but of course understand that this can happen to any Dr. and in fairness to Dr. Rahal he seems to be outstandingly committed to his patients and work and stands behind it like no other (I've read threads where he flies patients back in on his own dime). So I'm sort of up in the air. I'll assume the costs between the two aforementioned would be similar, so that is not a consideration.
  5. Welcome Joy! These are excellent questions. When it comes to hair transplant surgery in general, men are more often better candidates than women due to their typical balding patterns. Male hair loss patterns are described by the Norwood Scale while typical female patterns are described on the Ludwig Scale. When hair loss is diffuse and affects the "permanent zone" at the rear and sides of the head, surgical hair restoration is typically not a good option. However, some women may lose hair mostly in the front as you have described and may be good candidates for surgery. The best way to find out is to consult with a skilled and experienced hair transplant surgeon. When it comes to African hair in particular, there are other considerations. Follicular unit extraction (FUE) can be tricky with African hair due to the curl of the follicle. When follicles curl below the skin, it is difficult to effectively harvest them with a punch without transecting and killing the graft. Recently, Dr. Mike Vories started an interesting discussion regarding these difficulties that includes some nice images of extracted grafts. You can read this discussion here, FUE with African American Hair. In London we currently recommend two hair restoration clinics. I've provided their contact information here for your convenience. If you'd like to consider options outside of the UK as well, simply access our interactive map. Dr. Bessam Farjo Dr. Raghu Reddy
  6. Perhaps it is just me but I did not find their explanation of fees very clear. My recipient area was not shaved for either of my two procedures with Dr. Lorenzo and there was no additional charge nor was it ever really discussed. I expected a full shave particularly for the crown work but the Dr's brief explanation was that it was not necessary. A poster on another forum mentioned that Dr. Reddy's rates were lower outside of the London clinic but apparently he no longer performs FUE there so that factor may now be moot. Charging per hair instead of FU would certainly be disadvantageous to those lucky enough to have great donor density so I'm not sure that is a particularly equitable way to charge. Shacked first stated that the rates were per hair but then later claimed the actual rate he paid was 6GBP/graft. Lorenzo's rates in Manchester were 6GBP for the first 1000 FUs then 4GBP thereafter. All extractions and graft implantations were performed by the doctor and the only time the techs handled the grafts was for sorting and loading of the implanter pens. I mention this only as a point for comparison, I do not know what role techs play in Dr. Reddy's 3G technique and of course Dr. Lorenzo no longer practices in Manchester so his policies, techniques in addition to his rates are obviously different in Madrid.
  7. I agree with Future and BUSA. I assume you are considering FUE, and if you decide to go to Turkey Dr. Koray Erdogan (ASMED MANUAL FUE) and Dr. Hakan Doganay (AHD CLİNİC) are both one of the best and recommended FUE doctors here. Dr. Kyriakos Maras’ HDC Clinic, but located in Cyprus (Greek part), is also a good option for you. He is also one of the best FUE surgeons. You can easily contact with Alex, who is a representative of him in the forum. I think there are not many choices in USA for FUE, mostly they do FUT or FUE for NW 1-2 hair loss. To the best of my understanding they provide both FUE and FUT operations for their patients, but I am still not sure about their selection criteria. Anyway, I have seen Dr. Rahal (LMC HT INSTITUTE) from Canada also providing FUE now. You can find many good FUE surgeons in Europa. Mostly located in Belgium, Dr. Bijan Feriduni (my favorite) also, Patrick Mwamba and Christian Bisanga provides high quality FUE. These are all recommended doctors. In UK, Dr. Raghu Reddy is the best in my opinion. You should also consider Dr. Bessam Farjo (Farjo Clinic)[/B], but not sure if they provide FUE as well. Top quality FUE star is Dr. Jose Lorenzo from Spain but I have just noticed he has not been a recommended doctor anymore; I do not know or understand the reasons for that. Anyway, you should also consider him. His students may offer lower pricing with the same quality of work, so ask them too. If you choose them or Lorenzo, you will have the privilege of implantation done by doctors using pen pushing. For all the others mentioned, implantations are done by technicians as well; extraction of FUE grafts sometimes is done by technicians sometimes by doctors. Good luck and all the best to you. I also recommend to do some research here: Hair Transplant Network - Find Hair Transplant Clinics and Doctors, do not forget all coalition and recommended docs. here have passed many quality tests.
  8. Since people are asking, and there seems to be some misinformation circulating, I can offer a few things of note: -His fees at Farjo were considerably higher than in Madrid but still less than Reddy's. -I believe that he purposely underestimates the number of grafts possible during the consultation and then goes over the estimate without any additional charge so his actual fees may not be as high as originally quoted. -At Farjo he was doing only one patient a day and exclusively both the extractions and implantations. -In Madrid Dr. Villa is also doing cases at the same time and together there might be 3-4 procedures between them going on simultaneously. Several techs are also participating in the extractions, but to my knowledge all graft placements are still done by Lorenzo with his Lion pen implanter. Dr. Villa of course does her own implantations. -For my most recent procedure all of the scalp grafts were extracted by Dr. Lorenzo, the 500 beard grafts placed in my crown mixed among the scalp hair grafts were extracted by his most experienced tech. -A Spanish patient I chatted with who is also a MD, told me that he believed that the clinic's reputation and referrals came primarily from local word of mouth. Lorenzo does not market the way the clinics in NA do and mentioned to me that he is not equipped to handle an onslaught of NA patients with his current set up. -Since he does not have the time to read and respond to posted comments, and has no employee rep like many of the other clinics assigned to the task, he was considering withdrawing from the Network and may have already done so. -

  10. Hi All Any idea how to buy Dr.Reddy's Finax in Australia? I found this site "InhousePharmacy" but I am not sure.....any reviews on this site? Any one from Australia ? I worried about customs etc...can we import Finax like this? As Proscar is a prescription only drug in Australia. Any other suggestions...? Thanks
  11. I used to take Finax which stopped my hair loss with no side effects. I took it almost for 4 years. But I stopped it from the past 1 year for no reason. I should start it back. The first time I used minoxidil in 2006 I couuld not bare the irritation in my eyes so I never touched it again. I am thinking of trying Regaine foam now. Any idea how to buy Dr.Reddy's Finax in Australia? I found this site InhousePharmacy.biz but I am not sure.....any reviews on this site? Any one from Australia ? I worried about customs etc...can we import Finax like this? As Proscar is a prescription only drug in Australia.
  12. Thank you for the advice David. I've booked a consultation at Dr. Reddy's clinic in London. It sounds like a good first step. Thanks a bunch!
  13. Allow me to be lucid. I believe yields with FUE and strip are largely dependant on the surgeon and clinic. I believe a surgeon like Lorenzo(FUE only) will generally have a better yield than a strip surgeon like Dr. Carman(my opinion). I don't believe all strip surgeons obtain a 95% yield on average and I don't believe all FUE surgeons obtain a 90% yield on average. If we compare two elite surgeons from both fields like Konior(strip) and Lorenzo(FUE) I believe their yields are very comparable in general. One case may have slightly better yield than the other but if averaged out, I personally do not see a huge discrepancy between elite surgeons of the two given methods. Now if you want to compare an elite surgeon like Konior's strip results to an average composite(FUE and strip) surgeon's FUE results, I would not be surprised if Koniors result is significantly more impressive. Doctors like Lorenzo, Bisanga and Reddy have shown that FUE can obtain a yield comparable to the results of elite strip surgeons so the actual method(FUE or strip) is not the primary factor, surgeon/clinic skill and ability is. I don't believe patients who undergo strip are lacking intelligence in their choice or in general. I think 1978Matt got an amazing result as did Spanker. Could their results have been achieved via FUE? It is very possible(given donor density and other factors) but it is very possible that they wanted to utilize strip first and leave FUE for later if their balding progressed in the future. I cannot fault them for that. I personally do favor FUE for most circumstances but do not agree with the title of the thread and/or the notion that people who elect to undergo strip are unintelligent. I personally would find that characterisation insulting as I am sure some forum members have.
  14. Hi KS, Both Lorenzo and Reddy are excellent FUE surgeons. I don't think Dr. Farjo performs FUE. If you're staying in Europe, you should check out our surgeons in Belgium as well. Hope this helps!
  15. I believe I'm a norwood 3 male pattern baldness, hair receding at the front but don't THINK there's any loss on the crown. Dyeing it black for Halloween was a bad move though! Worst colour contrasted with my pale skin! I was seriously considering Dr. Raghu Reddy after a consultation with one of his clinic's reps but after watching some results on youtube I'm now not sure, although the HT's were performed on men with hair loss more severe than my own. Still, mine is VERY thin at the front now, and has definitely been getting worse every couple of months for the past year, so I've decided I'm going for it. I'm 27, and have been advised by two reps to take propecia first and continue indefinitely, due to my age resulting in a high likelihood of continued hair loss. I had my doubts about propecia but I'm starting to think the side effects are a risk I can take without too much worry (if anyone thinks otherwise please tell me and explain why). But where should I go for the best treatment? I don't want to have to repeat the procedure, I can't afford it, and a botched job would be worse than shaving my head cos I'd still have to pay all that money. Here are some pics, I was feeling brave so took them under a bright light. Thoughts?
  16. You've actually got a lot of good options in Europe. Dr. Reddy - in London - is great; our Belgian FUE surgeons are particularly good as well. Feel free to ask any additional questions. Good luck!
  17. LoseIt, Dr. Reddy is excellent. FUE or strip (FUSS)? If you're seeking FUE in London, I think a consultation with Dr. Reddy is a great place to start. If you're considering strip, investigate the Farjo clinic as well. Good luck!
  18. Well hang on a sec. If you rocked up here asking about Dr. Lorenzo or Dr. Reddy or something, then people would have something to say based on having had actual experience. This Vinci clinic may be very good but chances are, if they're not recognised by people here, that should tell you something. If you want opinions based on actual experience and you can't find any on here then go ask on other forums or search Google. Alternatively go with Vinci and discuss your options with a surgeon who's inaccessible to you until the day of your procedure. I dunno . . .you try and help people
  19.

    Hi David,

I love this site for all the helpful information.

    I had 2 questions

    1. how come dr. jose lorenzo is not listed in your Coalition Surgeon list?

    and

    2. who is the best for a scar repair and over density fue surgeon? Lorenzo, Reddy, Farjo? if you have any additional recommendations I would appreciate them.

  20. I had 3 earlier FUTs at NHI in LA. The first was a megasession of 3600 grafts following by 1200 and 800. This was in the early 90's and in 2000 so no microscopes were used. Post op care was nearly nonexistent and Dr Rassman though scheduled to do the 2nd and 3rd procedure bailed on the day of surgery and I subsequently was operated on by one his revolving associates. If I had to do it over again I would have taken a far different approach as none of these practices are considered acceptable by today's standard. That said despite being a NW6, due to excellent density and hair characteristics I had a fairly decent result up until 5 years ago when at age 55 the temporal areas began to noticeable dip leaving gaps. The native hairs in the front and top also disappeared leaving me with a "pluggy" look at the hairline for the first time. I revisited Dr. Rassman( essentially retired )who recommended SMP which I quickly rejected after he allowed me to watch one of his patients having this done. He also referred me to Dr. Umar for BHT who I met with on two subsequent occasions Considering my wide scar, tight scalp and limited donor supply in the back I concluded on my own that FUE was my only remaining option. I then started to research FUE and consulted via email with 2 additional FUE surgeons. I narrowed the choice to Dr. Lorenzo for the following reasons. 1) he does FUE exclusively and has years of experience. 2) he has provided a large volume of high resolution videos with hair parted in multiple directions and both wet and dry. No blurred images or distracting classical background music, just clear results to evaluate objectively. 3) He does both extractions and implantations himself so the results posted are his results and should therefor be relatively consistent which they are. 4) He uses a manual punch. As a procedural physician myself I know how important tactile feel is. 5) Most importantly his advice was conservative and understated as opposed to the other consults who advised more of the "swing for the fences" approach. I did proceed with my first FUE in Manchester back in March. I had1500 scalp grafts placed from the hairline to 1/2 of the way back on top. 300 beard grafts were put into the FUT scar. I am now at 7.5 months and the results have far exceeded my expectations. My hair looks better than in did 15 yrs ago and from what I can tell all of the grafts including the beard ones grew. Now that I have salt and pepper coloring the illusion of thickness is even more pronounced. Honestly I could stop now and be satisfied but I am scheduled to have another 1500 scalp grafts presumably to place in the crown area next month. I do not know much about Dr. Reddy other that the one recent case posted that showed a very nice result. He however is one of the most expensive and may as previously commented be best considered for smaller sessions. I doubt you could go wrong with either. I might add that as a fellow physician I was very impressed with Dr. Lorenzo's laser like focus during the procedure and the obvious passion and pride that he shows in his work.
  21. First off I'm so happy to see this website which is dedicated to helping your fellow friends. I have 3 transplant surgeries and have not achieved the results I had hopped for. The last of which was with dr. Elliot in Newport Beach, ca. Without completing a detailed search I later found out that he was debarred in the state of penn. The most important issue for me besides most grafts not growing are the scars in the back of my head. Can anyone please shed light ion who the best fue doctor is. I have been suggested drs. Reddy and Lorenzo. Can people that have gone to either share their experiences? I want to see who more progressive, can make the most density and repair my scar since I prefer the buzz look. Any unbiassed feedback would mean the world to me. Thanks
  22. Anyone on DUTAS By Dr. Reddy's from All Day Chemist in INDIA?
  23. I have heard few names of renowned FUT Surgeons in the world….Dr. Hasson, Dr. Waong, Dr. Kapil Dua, Dr. ****** ******, Dr. Puli Reddy are few names which you can refer. I do not know much about Dr. hasson and Dr. Dr. Waong but I have heard a lot about Dr. Kapil Dua and Dr. ****** ******. You may go on their websites for detailed information.
  24. Hi all - As always this forum is turning out to be of immense help and guidance to me. I apply Minoxidil(but an Indian brand - Dr. Reddy's with the same ingredient and quite reputable) twice a day. Since I have diffused loss and thinning, I apply it at a number of places. Is it okay to comb your hair after 20-25 mins, when your scalp is semi-dry. Also can I use brylcreem to style my hair at that time?
  25. Dr. B Sugunakar Reddy, Hair Transplant Surgeon in Hyderabad did a hair transplant on me in Aug 2013, implanted close to 1800 grafts in one sitting using FUT (strip) method . The results were extremely pleasing, he knows what he is doing, clearly told me upfront, that he would need check the laxity of my head skin, prior to promising how many grafts can be implanted. He said, if he takes more skin than permitted, the wound wouldn't be closed properly leaving a huge scar. The hair looked very natural, and no one could tell that I got a HT, the scar is invisible. Great job , Thank you Dr. BSR ! He being the a renowned plastic surgeon in that area made my hair very natural with minimum scar. I wish he could improve his clinic ambience, does some marketing, and would plant hairs little more denser. Dr. Sugunakar Reddy is a medical graduate from Osmania, one of the oldest in that region. He did his MBBS, MS and MCH from the same, the entry is highly selective. There are so many bogus clinics in Hyderabad, spend money on aggressive marketing, one of my friend went to that famous clinic located in jubilee Hills, The surgeon took more skin than permitted, it took 8 months to heal. When you see any Surgeon, ask them whether he would implant or assistants are implanting. The HT surgeon needs skilled hands, lot's patience and great imagination to blend the science and art to have the desired results. My pictures themselves speak about Dr.BSR's diligent work, I have no qualms recommending him to have a Hair transplant.
