Advice for Hair Loss Sufferers Considering Hair Transplant Surgery

My Story

  1. I disagree that he's too young for a hair transplant. At 28 years old (assuming the year of birth posted on his profile is accurate), getting a hair transplant may just be appropriate depending on other factors. I had my first hair transplant at 28 and though I needed a lot of grafts and it took many years to reach my goals, I'm still very happy with my results 8 years after my last procedure. Prettyboy, I'm not familiar with the clinic "Transform", but if you're in the UK, we recommend some outstanding surgeons who have a long, proven track record of producing outstanding results. This includes Dr. Bessam Farjo and Dr. Radhu Reddy. I encourage you to click on their profiles to learn more and to see examples of their results. You are also encouraged to use the "search" feature of this forum to view other real patient results presented on this forum. Best wishes, Bill
  2. Hello guys, Posting my 2 month pics. Hope everyone's doing well. Can't believe it is more than 2 months already Transplanted side :Hairs are growing slowly, atleast that is what I feel. I have some short hair, but I am unable to figure out if these are the new hair that are popping out. I have clicked some good and more quantity of pics this time so you guys can guage more. Temples of one side seems still intact. Maybe you guys can comment on that ? Donor side : There is some redness in the donor area, that is it is not completely healed but Native hair: I think I don't have much shock loss and they are growing at a normal pace now. Medications : I have been taking 1mg finasteride by Cipla and Biotin and applying 5 % minoxidil by Dr.Reddy's twice a day. I have also been applying JnJ's baby oil on it every day after shower. Apart from that I have started playing Badminton again(sweating) in a full flow and running on a good note. I have also been doing some inversion exercises to regulate more blood flow(I am not putting any pressure on the head). Social life: I have started drinking occasionally on the weekends not too much though. I might have smoked a few cigarettes here and there but never too much. (3 cigarettes per two weeks on an average) Feel free to ask me any questions or give your honest opinions. Question: 1)How do you feel about hair, since I am not able to figure out the difference if new hairs are popping out or no? 2)Do you feel I am early in the process of growing hair or late? Any honest opinion and advise would help. Thank you so much in anticipation for reading this out. Happy growing Cheers guys
  3. Malin, It's great that you are here doing some research before you take the plunge into hair transplant surgery. While I am not too familiar with many of the physicians you referenced, meaning that I've heard of them but haven't seen much of their work or results, I am highly confident in Dr. Farjo and Dr. Reddy you are both highly esteemed and recommended by this community. You can see a multitude of their results on this forum posted by both the clinic and patients. If you have any questions regarding either of these surgeons, feel free to contact me privately or ask them here on this topic. Personally, I would trust both of them with my scalp because they have a proven history of producing excellent results. That to me is the most important thing in selecting an outstanding surgeon. Best wishes Bill
  4. Posting my 1 month pic. Hope everyone's new year started with a bang. Transplanted side : I have shedded around 75 % of the transplanted hair as expected. Although uneven that is there are some on the sides. Front and 1 side are shedded and temples are still there. Temples of one side seems still intact. There is some redness on the transplanted side but nothing usual. Donor side : There is some redness in the donor area, that is it is not completely healed but I have not cared too much about this since there was no pain. I applied aloe vera lotion on this but for two weeks. Now regained applying it again. Native hair: This hair is been growing at it's own pace and I think this is normal. Honestly I have never ever shaved my head completely hence I don't know my growing rate or speed. I have trimmed down the sides and kept hair only on my frontal third to not make it look too out of the place. Medications : I have been taking 1mg finasteride by Cipla and applying 2 % minoxidil by Dr.Reddy's twice a day. I have also been applying JnJ's baby oil on it every day after shower. Apart from that I have started playing Badminton again in a full flow and running on a good note. I have also been doing some inversion exercises to regulate more blood flow(I am not putting any pressure on the head). Also my crown seems to be empty since I have shaved it that way. There is however a small red pimple on my frontal region. Is this ok ? Feel free to ask me any questions or give your honest opinions. Cheers guys
  5. I've always used generic finasteride and I'm confident that it's worked as expected. In terms of brands, I've had Dr. Reddy's and a couple of other brands I can't recall. I did not perceive any difference in effect. I've also used a few different brands of minoxidil from Rogaine to Kirkland to Target brand. As far as I can tell, no difference in quality. I quit using liquid years ago. I prefer foam which does not dry out my scalp.
  6. KR, Thanks for sharing another impressive example of Dr. Reddy's results. That said, do you have any photos showing the top of the patient's scalp before and after surgery? To get a full understanding and appreciation of the result, a more detailed selection of photos would be helpful. Best wishes, Bill
  7. 37 year old gentleman presented to us with a 5 year history of gradual hair loss .He has used Minoxidil 5% occasionally in the past. He was keen to get his hairline restored as it was affecting his confidence. O/e Dr Reddy diagnosed him with an early Norwood 4 pattern of hair loss and decided to stabilise his hair initially with Propecia. He was examined 12 months later and was counselled extensively regarding FUE. He was keen to get maximum density and was happy with a mature hairline to frame his face. 2711 grafts were transferred using a manual FUE with a 0.9 mm punch. Attached are the pics before, during and after 9 months.

  9. Hi Bill, I hope to get some attention from you and some senior members here !! I am 26 years old, went through a hair straightening procedure 6-7 years ago, have been losing hair at moderate pace since then. Baldness runs in my family as well. At norwood 2 stage with less density in frontal area, i went through a 1000 graft hair transplant at Bangalore, India by Dr. Venkat charmalaya. It was a futile effort, i ended up with lesser hair on front, maybe due to shock loss and no additional regrowth, have also been on finasteride by dr. reddy;s for 6 months, no visible improvement. I seek help in choosing a doctor in India/Thailand.(Preferably India), A doctor who could assure results this time, as another futile transplant would deplete my donor supply and time. I would be grateful for your inputs, as this forum is my only ray of hope now. Personally visited Dr. Tejinder Bhatti in Chandigarh and Dr. Kapil Dua in Ludhiana, while Dr.Kapil Dua gave me a lot of comfort and confidence, Dr. Bhatti's reviews seem better, also he has many visible success cases on this forum, i also liked his clinic's exclusivity to hair restoration. Have also went through posts of HT failures by both doctors on this forum, specially the one where Dr.bhatti did not do most of the surgery by himself, and the forum's have a lot of failed cases against doctor dua, While both of them are only "recommended" surgeon's here, Dr. Damkerng Pathomvanich in Thailand is "coalition surgeon", would going to him create a huge difference, or either of these two mentioned doctors equally good ? I am aware that while harvesting and design is done by the surgeon himself, while planting is done by the helpers, is this true always ? Also, i need guidance in how to go about the surgery with high success chances this time, without feeling cheated like in the first case, please help me choose a surgeon.

  15. I feel like I've heard conflicting statements about the graft yield (survival rate) for FUE. Some places I read 95% but then I was just on Dr. Reddy's site and it states that their yield is over 80% which is one of the best in the world - again according to the site. Obviously it depends on lots of factors as always, but 80% seems very low to me.
  16. Hi All I am new to this forum and have a few questions regarding FUE clinics in London. I am 38 yrs old and have been using Propeica for the last 2 years and have decided its time to go for FUE. I have been to see Dr. Reddy and Harley St Clinic and been advised that i need between 2000 and 2800 grafts. On both occasions, I met with a sales rep as opposed to the surgeon. I have read good reviews about Dr. Ball at the Maitland Clinic and also Dr. Ferudini and Dr. Bisanga in Belgium. I also hear Blackrock in Ireland are good. Am I missing someone? Does anyone have any advice on Harley St Hair Clinic? I know its famous for Wayne Rooney's FUE but does anyone else have any experience? Is there a lead surgeon there? The face of the practice seems to be a sales guy. I would be v grateful for any help.
  17. mlc2010, Thank you for sharing this interesting find. I've reached out to Dr. Reddy and invited him to join this discussion and provide any data or case studies that illustrate these claims.
  18. Charlie, Welcome! Yes, hair transplant surgery can be used to lower a naturally high hairline. However, whether or not this is a good idea in your specific case will depend on a number of factors like your age, where your hairline is now, where you want it placed and your potential for future hair loss. As you may know, we have a finite number of donor hairs to draw from. If your family history indicates that you may experience hair loss in the future, then creating a juvenile hairline now would not be a good idea. You could run out of donor hair for future procedures and be left with an unnatural appearance. To provide useful feedback we would need to see a photo of your current hairline and details about any existing hair loss and family history of balding. Your best bet is to consult with one or more recommended physicians. In England we recommend the following hair transplant surgeons: Dr. Bessam Farjo Dr. Raghu Reddy
  19. Thanks for all your input guys. Would any of you happen to know how much Dr Reddy would charge for 1500 grafts? ive seen a site say he charges ?2 per hair but that's an odd way to charge and doesn't seem accurate. If Dr Reddy ask for more than i am willing to pay i have found another site that i think may be suitable but i cant find their page describing their surgeons which outs me off but the work looks positive and it already tells you the cost per graft. I would expect this site to cost me under ?5000. . - HDC - Hair Transplant, Restoration and Treatment Centre EDIT - I believe the top surgeon at the second location is - Dr. Kyriakos Maras
  20. I think dr.reddy gets more with less grafts, as he picks the chunkiest ones. His website before and after look great, with such small grafts I sent you a pm
  21. It sounds like you've done a great job doing your homework. I know things can be confusing and there is a lot to learn and read. Of course, not everything you read will be true and you have to take certain things with a grain of salt. This community prescreen to recommend surgeons based on a set of standards. The standard determine whether or not we invite physicians to be recommended sponsors. Only those who have a long history of producing outstanding results are invited to become recommended physicians on this community. There are other websites, some operate similarly and some operate differently. Many simply take advertising money from doctors allowing them to take up advertising space on their website. This is not the same as a recommended position. We use the term recommended because we put a lot of time, energy and research into making sure that we ourselves would trust our own scalp with that doctor. I see that you have narrowed your selection down to Dr. Reddy. I think you made an excellent choice and I firmly believe in his work. As I'm sure you've seen he is recommended by this community as well. I've been very impressed by his work as have other members who have seen him post multiple times on this website. He continues to present examples every month so that we can continue to evaluate his work and everything I've seen has been top notch. It sounds like you said you are a long way from deciding on undergoing the procedure completely. There's nothing wrong with taking your time and researching everything. If we can help with anything, please ask any specific questions and we will do our best to help you. In the meantime, keep up the good work in researching and I'm sure you'll make the right decision. The right decision is always one that's best for you. Bill
  22. Hello everyone, It is been a year I refill my finasteride with Walgreen --Dr. Reddy's brand. This time I went to refill it again, they gave me the finasteride from Camber Inc and they told me they will have finasteride from this company in the future. Is anyone known what other pharmacies I can find Dr. Reddy's brand because I have been told it is the only brand that is working. Many Thanks

  24. Hello. Long-time lurker, first time poster. Quick re-cap of my history. In about 2007, at about 30 years old, I had some noticeable thinning at my temples and front third. As a preventative measure, I got some generic 5 mg Proscar (Dr. Reddy) online and began taking one-quarter (1.25 mg) daily. I didn't really notice any change (like I said, I was taking it preventatively and my loss was concentrated to my temples and frontal third-- the area least likely to be improved with finasteride). However, about 2-3 months into taking the pills I experienced a pretty severe sexual side effect. I am someone who has never had the slightest issue in "that department" yet suddenly, I found myself having a very difficult time getting an erection. I had actually just started dating a girl, so this was majorly stressful to me. I was sufficiently enough freaked out to go to my doctor over the issue. To be honest, at this stage I had no idea that finasteride was associated with this type of side effect, so didn't even realize this was the cause until my doctor told me that he suspected the finasteride was the issue. He told me to stop taking them immediately, which I did. Thank heavens, within weeks of ceasing the Proscar, my sexual function returned in its entirety. I have since read nightmare stories of people who have become permanently impotent even after they stop taking the finasteride. I actually consider myself quite lucky to have had the side effects cease. Now, fast forward to 2016. I have been on 2/day Rogaine foam for ~5 yrs but my MPB has steadily continued. I now have significantly more thinning in my frontal third and a bit on the crown. I probably have transitioned from a NW2 to a NW3 in the past year and I am reaching the critical point where I will no longer be able to hide my hair loss much longer. I have consultations scheduled and have decided that I definitely want to take the plunge and go for a HT this year. I have researched it for a long time and am firm in my desire for a HT. However, based on my past experience with finasteride I am EXTREMELY reluctant to ever try it again. I would, frankly, prefer to never touch it. I understand that surgeons certainly prefer that the patient hold onto any native crown and vortex hair with finasteride. But I'm still terrified of the stuff. Does anyone have any take on doing an HT with Rogaine only and no finasteride? I understand that I will likely shed more from the crown and need further procedures down the road. My other question is, since I took online, generic Proscar and my side effects ceased when I cut it off, should I give name brand Propecia another try and hope for the best? I am 99.9% against touching it again, but there is a small part of me that is so stressed about my hair loss that I may try to take a smaller amount of it, if I really need it.
