Advice for Hair Loss Sufferers Considering Hair Transplant Surgery

My Story

  1. I was just at Shapiro Medical Group this week and Dr. Paul says oral is much more effective. He takes the oral himself and says if you don’t have any heart issues then that’s the route to go.
  2. Hi All, I first need to thank this forum and the members. I cannot overstate the impact of this forum throughout my journey. After thoroughly researching this forum and having several phone consultations, I figured out that Shapiro medical group is the right option for me. Given the extensiveness of the surgery I needed (photos are attached), I decided to go with Dr. Shapiro. My surgery was on June 19th (three days ago), and currently I am super pleased with the experience. The surgery itself went very smoothly and I didn't feel even a little pain (that could be because Dr. Paul has an expertise in pain management). Initially we were shooting for 3500-4000 grafts, but we ended up with 4775 grafts (I think it is considered mega-session, right?). I have attached pre- and post-op photos. I appreciate if you give me your feedback. Any comment is very much appreciated.
  3. So after lurking around this forum for a while I had decided to dive in head first (pun intended) and go ahead with the transplant. If you'd like to ask me any specific questions I'd be happy to answer. I'll just say that the HT itself was relatively painless and aside from some acceptable uncomfortableness and tenderness in the first 3 weeks the entire process was relatively as smooth as one would expect. I've been taking Finasteride for 2 and half months prior to surgery and I'm using Minoxidil once daily starting 2 weeks after surgery, per Shapiro's instructions. I was a NW 3/4 with balding spots in the crown and heavy thinning in the frontal hairline region. Shapiro has decided on using the entire grafts extracted on the frontal region and let Finasteride do its trick on the crown area. Right now I'm at the 1 month mark. I've been losing a lot of hair during this time, especially after starting to apply Minoxidil. I will update every month or two with pictures of my progress. Hopefully it will be a good one!
  4. Out of curiosity, have you considered any other surgeons besides the ones mentioned? Perhaps Dr. Konior, Drs. Ron and Paul Shapiro, or Dr. Gabel? Also, you may consider really studying and viewing multiple consistent results from robotic FUE before committing to a procedure. You are not in a rush, so I advise you to take a step back and really do your research and meet with more surgeons in person.
  5. Guys, today I had my FUE procedure with Dr. Paul Shapiro. It is 2AM here in Minneapolis. Just woke from heavy dose of Valium and Vicodin. Tom said - One of easiest cases he has worked on (coarse thick straight hair). He extracted approx. 1200 grafts within a very short period using SAFE. Dr. Paul said - One of the difficult cases as I would just not go numb. He was extremely patient and kind. Matt - Great guy, his confidence in SMG gave me confidence. Jenna - Very particular about details and a sweet personality to deal with. SMG staff was very kind and helpful. It seemed to me Vicodin made very nauseous, threw up 4 times after the procedure. Hope the grafts did not get dislodged/fall out. Tomorrow I will be going for the hair wash at SMG and after I am back I will update the thread with more details. Many thanks to this forum and members of this forum for helping me all the way. Like I said I will add more details tomorrow.
  6. Some of you guys may have seen these products advertised on Facebook, Instagram or other social media sites. IMPORTANT NOTE: This product is not to be confused with Dr. Ron and Paul Shapiro, these are completely different doctors who started this product. The price is quite expensive and the ingredients lackluster in my opinion. It’s essentially saw palmetto, green tea flavanol and caffeine being marketed as the most powerful DHT blockers on the market. I recommend you guys take a few short minutes out of your day to the read the article and share it if possible, this could potentially help alot of guys out there who are considering this product Do ShapiroMD Hair Growth Products Really Work?
  7. Why don't you try coloring your hair so that the donor has a uniform color. The fact that you have grey patches throughout your donor may be making the donor area appear as if it has thinning patches in the photos. You could also try taking a few videos of your donor zone in an area with natural lighting, and send them in to the clinics you are considering, instead of photos. There are different sites that will allow you to upload content and share it via a link. Finally, you have some of the very best Doctors in the world in the US who produce incredibly natural results. Dr. Gabel, Drs. Ron and Paul Shapiro, Dr. Konior to name a few. Why not consider one of them for your surgery?
  8. Hi rjw, It is difficult to get a good idea of your donor region by looking at these photos alone. First, the camera faced a bright light when the photos were taken, so the image quality is poor. Also, you hair is very short, so it is difficult to evaluate the donor region accurately from just looking at the photos. Do you have better photos with your hair grown out a bit? Dr. Konior in Illinois and Dr. Ron and Paul Shapiro are quite close to you and both are recommended by this forum. I recommend an in-person consult with a leading surgeon to get a crystal clear idea of what your options are.
  9. Male, 30 years old, had hair transplant procedure with Dr. Paul Shapiro on 12/19/13. Its been seven months and I am not seeing any hair growth. As the pictures posted on my profile illustrate, the hair growth has been patchy, and less than 33% of the hair transplanted has started growing. Needless to say, when I called the Shapiro clinic yesterday for my post op appointment, I was frustrated with the progress so far. Instead of listening to my concerns, their representative Matt Zupan does the following: 1. Matt starts off the call by telling me how fantastic my hair growth has been so far. It is obvious he hasn't seen my pictures, since most people can look at my pictures and conclude that the growth is far from "fantastic" 2. Then, once I ask if I should use Minoxidil (Rogaine) to stimulate hair growth, he starts blaming me for not using Minoxidil from right after the surgery, and Matt mentions that the handout/videos state that using Minoxidil is mandatory. 3. He then proceeds to create a theory that the transplanted hair is growing well, and the reason I still look bald is that my native hair is falling. I then have to remind Matt to look at my file, since I clearly mentioned before my surgery that I have been on Avodart (Dutasteride - 0.5mg) since 2010. 4. At this stage, I am incredibly frustrated, since Matt has not looked at my medical records, or looked closely at my pictures, and he is trying to pin the lack of hair growth on me. Before the call ends, Matt again asks me to email him the medications I am on, something I already told the Shapiro group the day of my surgery. I am ok with spending $10000, and living my life with a big scar on my scalp. What I am not ok with, is the utter lack of professionalism displayed by Matt Zupan. At this stage, I have no other option but to pray and hope for hair growth, or be back under the knife.
  10. Shampoo, I don’t know anything about this product at the moment but I did just want to chime in just to say that this shampoo has nothing to do with recommended hair transplant physicians and Coalition members Dr. Ron Shapiro or Dr. Paul Shapiro. This “hair loss shampoo” is being sold by a Dr. Steven Shapiro, who is not affiliated with our community. That doesn’t make him or his product bad - it’s just that this community doesn’t know much about him. Shampoo, let us know how you make out with the product. Best wishes, Bill
  11. P.S. Dr. Paul Shapiro is an excellent surgeon and I’m sure that he will help you if there is a problem.
  12. Thank you for the suggestions everyone. Thank you for the suggestions Wazam. I heard about Shapiro group. But there are 3 names that come up. "Dr. David Josephitis, Ron and Paul Shapiro. I assume all of them are equally well reputed? I will tell my bro to try and consult with Dr Konior also.
  13. Dr. Paul Shapiro addressed a NW3 with 3097 grafts to restore hair to the frontal 1/2 (appoximately 100cm2 area)
  14. Hello, First of all, I would like to thank the community members for sharing their inputs and experiences. I don't know what I would have done without this forum. My hair loss began 3-4 years ago and I never realized that I was balding until last year and decided to go for a hair transplant this year. I started my research in April and booked my date with SMG. I would like to thank Matt of SMG for answering my questions patiently. I had my transplant on 15th June, 2016. Because of the flight delays I was not able to sleep the night before the surgery. I just took a shower, had a quick breakfast and was ready for the surgery at 8:00 AM. ( Landed in Minneapolis at 5:00 AM). From the start of the procedure I believed that I was in good hands and had no anxiety at all. I did not even think about it the night before the surgery. The day started with a photo session and followed by a consultation with Dr Paul. We decided to get maximum density in the front and the mid scalp but minimal crown coverage depending on the no. of grafts that can be extracted during the surgery. My hairline is untouched. The procedure started at around 9:15 AM. Dr. Paul injected local anesthesia around my head and I fell asleep!!. When ever I needed to change positions, they woke me up and I used fall asleep soon after that. I again woke up again only for lunch and they informed me that they were done extracting the grafts. I had my lunch and slept again and woke up only after the procedure was complete at around 5:00 PM. Having slept for such a long time, I felt rejuvenated after the surgery. Next day after the surgery, I returned for a shampoo and a quick photo session after that. I then realized that I will not to able to cover my transplanted area with my existing hair!! So I decided to go for a buzz cut after 2 weeks.
  15. On August 3rd of 2015 I had my first hair restoration . I was informed due to my young age, extent of hair loss, future loss, and thin/lightweight hair I will always have a bald area in the back. The nice thing is I can make it go away when I use the caboki concealer. I started using finasteride in August as well. I have used rogaine for many years . ( 7-8 ) The donor scar- non issue --- I have always kept my hair on the sides 3/4 to an inch long. The surgery itself - painless - post op for about a week it was a little sore, and sleeping with the staples is uncomfortable. But no big deal... I was very happy to get the staples out. Thank you to this website and its members for sharing experiences and all your help. Although I have never posted much I was always reading up , which lead me to Shapiro medical. I had had other consults locally but ultimately made the trip to go to Shapiro. Because of this website..... 1. Found the right surgeon 2. Chose FUT via strip method ( works best for ME) 3. Had realistic expectations 4. Knew what was going to go on post op.
  16. Hi Guys Need help in selecting a doctor for my FUT 3000 GRAFTS procedure Dr. Glen Charles, Dr. Ron or Paul Shapiro. Any positive feed back/cautious sign about these doctors or recommendation would be helpful to make my decision Regards
  17. The shampoo you mention and the link you provided are not affiliated with Dr. Paul Shapiro or anyone at Shapiro Medical Group and no affiliation should be suggested or implied. Thank you.
  18. This thread prodded me to unlurk (new word?) myself. I haven't been active on the forums for a few years but there was a time I would read every thread and post multiple times a day. I remember asking this very question, "where do all the HT vets go?" It's true, some provocative posters get banned and others just end up hanging out at a different forum, reddit, etc. But I remember exactly when and how it happened for me. It was the summer of 2012 and I just packed my bags to wander around China for two weeks (Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing). It was a life changing trip - experiencing an entirely different culture, food, sites, etc. When I came back home it just seemed like the forums weren't as interesting to me anymore. I just moved on. It's not that I didn't care for my hair anymore or that I wouldn't consider getting more work done in the future. But in the summer of 2012 I was reaping the fruits of my second procedure with Dr. Paul Shapiro which was done the preceding year, and my China excursion shifted my priorities with how I spent my free time. I still lurk to check out the incredible work being done. These forums are very informative and I got to meet a lot of great people too. From what I can tell a lot of these guys still post, so the forum is far from dead.
  19. Shapiro Medical is very pleased to present a patient who visited our clinic 2 years after his 4348 graft Strip procedure. Dr. Paul Shapiro was able to achieve this patient's goal to address all areas of his NW 5 hair loss pattern. Understandably, this patient is very happy with his result. This patient's 6 Mos Progress was presented here: http://www.hairrestorationnetwork.com/eve/171638-dr-paul-shapiro-%96-6-mos-post-strip-procedure-%96-4348gr-9359-hairs.html
  20. Hi all. This is my first thread post. I am keeping a blog and photos as well on this site. I had a large session (3988 grafts for 8200 hairs) with Dr. Paul on October 17, 2014. It is now Day 11 and so far, so good in most respects. I had a great experience at the Shapiro Medical Group, and no pain at any point in the procedure. I was told I bled very little during the procedure, and my grafts hardly had scabs over the last 10 days. The redness has faded quickly as well (pic below makes it look more red than it really is). The staples were removed yesterday and the scar looks good - still a little redness hanging on at the donor scar. I know this scar will take up to a year or more to look optimal as it continues to heal, but he used the best closure procedure available, so I expect the best results possible. I am starting into the shedding phase now with the hairline graft hairs starting to go first. I have some flaking on the scalp. I hope that will go away as the shedding concludes. The hard part for me now is making my head look "normal" to the point where I didn't have anything done while I wait for growth. The Dr. shaved the native hairs on the top of my head for the graft placements, and now I fear I will look more like a Norwood VII (I was Norwood V before the procedure) once the grafts shed and my native hair on top has not grown back yet or is still suffering from shock loss. Only my wife is involved in this decision so far, but I know eventually others will notice. I am fine with that and look forward to talking about it when the time comes, but for now I want to get through the Ugly Duckling phase with as little ugly as possible. I would like to make it appear I cut everything really short. However, I cannot trim the sides and back as short as the top due to the scar healing. Any ideas as to what people do to get through this phase for the next few months? Does anyone cut it short and then use a concealer (like Toppix) on the scar? I could probably go down to a 3 on the clipper without much scar being noticeable, but that's still not as short as what it will be on top. I have attached Day 11 pics of the top and back so you can see my hair type. It is wavy in the back and that creates some openings for the scar to show when it naturally separates. I went to Dr. Shapiro after extensive research of docs and largely out of his natural hairline results. To me, nothing is as important as a natural hairline that fits your head type, hair type, recession levels on the sides, and your (slightly) younger self. I think a "messy" hairline is a natural hairline in my case, and it seems he delivered that staggered, messy look. I did not want the hairline too low. I never had a really low hairline. A very crisp, straight hairline would be all wrong for me as well. I think he artistically approached it in the right way, and I have been happy so far with how the hairline looks as the grafts have grown a bit in the first 10 days. I'll try to keep posts updated as I go. Below are photos from left to right: Day 11 top, Day 11 back, and the Before photo from top.
  21. Another superb result from Dr. Paul Shapiro - Patient is pleased to show-off his results. Total grafts: 3763 Total hairs: 7782 1 hair grafts: 735 2 hair grafts: 2081 3 hair grafts: 903 4 hairs grafts: 44
  22. Sometimes, it's difficult to get a "spot on" results on diffused thinners. *There's a concern that the thinning will be ongoing that you can't see the added density from the surgical procedure. Here's a patient who feels his result with Dr. Paul Shapiro is exactly what he wanted with definite noticeable added density. http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm182/janna0001/DrPaulShapiro/S06202016B/Slide8.j
  23. Hello all, Here is a result of Dr. Paul Shapiro & team who we may consider it to be "minor work" but for the patient it's considered a major change in framing her face.
  24. I recently chose Shapiro's office for a FUE procedure. We got about 2,285 units the first time and several weeks later, I went back (at no additional expense) for another 400 or so to balance out a frontal hairline portion. I can say that Shapiro's office stands behind its work. If you are unhappy or want to tweak something, they will work with you. It was abundantly clear that they want happy clients and will do what it takes (within reason) to get that. The biggest issue with NW5-6 candidates and FUE is unrealistic expectations. In my case, we targeted density in the frontal & middle portion and left the rear crown pretty much untouched as I do not mind having some normal MPB in the rear crown area. I needed all of the grafts for my frontal/mid section. If you want whole head coverage, you are realistically talking 2 procedures or grafts placed in a way that will give thinner density (not ideal). The average donor quality of mid 30's NW5-6 is not perfect and you're probably maxing out at 2,500 units per procedure. The first day they did a small number of slits and FUE extraction to gauge your donor quality and skin thickness, etc. I also opted for PRP + A-cell during the procedure to help improve recovery and yield. Anyway, I was impressed with their office. Matt Zupan (experienced consultant) bends over backwards to help and answer questions and Dr. Paul Shapiro and Dr. Josephitis -"Joe" (younger, new doctor who they hand picked) both worked on me. Ron Shapiro has scaled back some and does less procedures I'm told. In my experience, Dr. Paul Shapiro makes all of the incisions. And yes, they do all of the incisions first, then later move the grafts via technicians. Dr. Joe did the hybrid manual FUE (motorized) portion of the procedure. They do not like the results they get with the patented auto/robotic option. Like Konior, they use custom punch depth and blades to best meet the clients criteria (skin thickness, donor quality, dept, ect.). The main difference is that Konior uses the "stick-and-place" technique where after each slit is made, a technician then puts the FU graft in right after. The theory is you can make smaller incisions and so have less trauma to the recipient area, quicker healing and possibly better density because of incisions made closer together. That last portion is a bit of a stretch though (sounds good). I do not think there is enough difference in graft placement (due to incision size) to give better density. But I think its possible there is some benefit to smaller incisions and getting the grafts in immediately. Regardless, I still chose Shapiro based on some other feedback. I don't think this difference in technique matters much. I do not think you can go wrong with either Shapiro's office or Konior. They are both top 5-6 offices in the world, in my opinion. I am only about a month out form the procedure. Recovery is as expected with minimal pinkness/redness in the recipient site at this point. It increases with alcohol, stress, exercise - anything that would increase blood flow to the face/head or cause flushing. I would expect (hope) that that too will be gone by month 2. I'll probably wait a minimum of 4 months before direct, intense sun on the scalp. Shapiro's office also offers some really good SMP too (separate SMP specialist). I was talking with an older patient when I was there. He is a veteran to the HT world and said he visited several offices before choosing Shapiro. He has maxed out his donor and has a full head of hair that looks natural. He has been getting "fill in" SMP around his existing hair to improve the appearance of density and the results were rather impressive. He showed me some before and after photos and it has definitely improved the density and looks really good. SMP, in the right hands, is a pretty good adjunct for someone who has maxed out donor or doesn't want the hassle of another procedure but needs some improved density look in certain areas.
  25. Dr. Paul Shapiro The transplant was performed on 2/21/2017 two eight-hour sessions. Total grafts transplanted-2501 Hairs 1's-479 2's-1730 3's-292 Total hairs 4815 Hi, Guys. I decided to get a transplant before my wedding and thought I would share my journey with you. I decided to have my work done by Dr. Paul Shapiro. Between Dr. Paul and Dr. Joe, they did a great job on my transplant. It was pretty much pain-free and within 2 days I was pretty much healing right away. Along with the transplant, I received an ACELL/PRP treatment. The last picture was taken on 3/8/2017. I healed very quickly. I am already starting to shed some of the transplanted hairs. Is it normal to already experience shedding? Also, I didn't realize the transplanted hairs would grow right away.
