Advice for Hair Loss Sufferers Considering Hair Transplant Surgery

My Story

Found 1,754 results

  1. Been doing a lot of research into FUE surgeons, and Dr. Diep seems to be one of the only ones that has delivered extremely impressive results on black curly hair. I've seen results from other clinics on black hair, but none of them have given me that "wow" factor that Diep has delivered on several patients. Besides this, I'm not completely sold on Diep. His punch size , year plus waitlist, and reports that would question his ethics (bait and switching customers, donor depletion, not fixing bad results), and increasing prices have put me off a bit. In fact, if I was white or asian, he wouldn't even be on my list at all. None of the top/elite FUE surgeons talked about on this site have results for black curly hair on their websites, besides Diep obviously. Are there any users out there that have black curly hair that can share success stories at other clinics? I'll also mention that I'm not interested at all in FUT.
  2. Very unimpressed with how Dr. Diep uses such a large extraction tool size. Very bad for the donor area. I believe this is why he doesn't show donor area post op pics within first few months of post op. Here are pics.

  3. Hey guys , so my surgery date for 2000 FUE grafts supposed to be on 11-19-2018.. I had 5 buisiness days prior to surgery to make full payment .. I have the whole money in my bank account , but had lost my debit card the week prior .. so they wanted me to use PayPal so I signed up for it but I had to wait for my confirm with PayPal before I can pay .. so the office manager told me I had until 3pm yesterday to make payment .. even though I told i be able to do it tomorrow.. she still cancel on me and reschedule me for the next earliest date October 28th 2019 for FUT or FUE.. I’m kinda upset about it . Since my PayPal account is active now I’m able to pay .. so I’m a day late n they still canceled .. but kinda glad cuz I rather do FUT to save money .. and it’s wiser to do fut ur first transplant .. I told them I want to be on their cancellation list for upcoming cancels .. but right now , I feel like going to giving Hasson n Wong a consult .. diep clinic can steal my $1000 deposit .. I’m not waiting a whole year , I’m not crazy about their FUT , I like his hairlines though .. but their office is not very customer friendly .. .. so is Hasson n wong prices on their website Canadian dollars? I think I might go to them if their schedule is open .
  4. Looking for a couple good FUE doctors for African Americans doctors ? I know about diep but he depleted a lot of donors . Extremely high, and booked out for a year . Looking for a few more. Anyone know about Dr.Vories? Thanks
  5. Dr. Vories, is a great doctor with tons of experience and a great track record. That said, this whole donor depletion with Dr. Diep, has gotten out of hand. There is yet to be one single patient to come forward and say their donor is depleted. I have had two FUE procedures and my donor is far from depleted and there are countless others on this forum. Just because some posters look at a picture and say it's depleted doesn't make it so. Of course, Dr. Vories, is an excellent doctor and if you like his results he is an excellent choice.
  6. Several other surgeons perform hair transplants on black curly hair, Dr. Umar, Dr. Cooley to name a few. That said, I don't know what you've heard about Dr. Diep, but I can personally attest to his skill, I owe my result to him. If it wasn't for him who know's how my hair would like today. But there are several other surgeons out there to perform surgery.
  7. I am looking to get an FUE surgery done. After talking to 5 or 6 clinic, I was told I would need about 3500 graft. I have narrowed down to Dr. Diep or Dr. Hasson. Any thoughts or recommendation from anyone regarding these 2 doctors? During the process, I have also considered and had discussion with Shapiro, Ranior, Rahal.
  8. This Black African American woman had 3,458 hair grafts transplanted into the frontal, lowering the hairline and filling into both side edges by Dr. Diep during 1 year follow up. 3,458 Hair grafts break down: 1 hair grafts: 623 hair roots 2 hair grafts: 1,462 hair roots 3 hair grafts: 976 hair roots 4 hair grafts: 397 hair roots total hair grafts: 3,458 hair roots To view this client in further detail, please look on the following Youtube link:
  9. I had a hair loss restoration treatment done with Dr. John Diep, and the results were better than expected. I found out about his clinic after watching video reviews on youtube. his website is: www.mhtaclinic.com
  10. The answers came from Dr. Diep, but it was more his response to patients and they posted his response. It would be way too tedious to go and find the responses. But they were essentially the same thing I said. Secondly, why would Dr. Diep ruin a donor area to the point where subsequent procedures are not possible? That would mean he’d shoot him self in the foot because he’d have no repeat customers. In terms of punch size, what happens is that one person will quote one study done by one doctor and now that’s gospel. I saw the same thing done with FUE, but guess what FUE has never been more popular. If it really didn’t work why would more and more surgeons offer it every year. The same can be said about Diep.
  11. Everything looks great, I wouldn't be concerned about any thing at this point tbh. You could be experiencing some slight shock loss in the donor and may even experience some mild shock loss in the recipient, but hopefully not. I visited Dr. Diep's office today for an interview. I will be editing it in the next few days and putting it up on YouTube, while I was there I saw a guy in the waiting room that turned out to be a patient. I swear I get jealous of some guys results lol you're in good hands.
  12. Funny you should ask that. I just started on brand name propecia when I was previously on the generic proscar. My first batch of the drug was a prescription for generic proscar, and I initially had sides when doing 1/4 every day, and experimented and eventually landed on .5 mg every third day. I don't know the manufacturer. That lasted me for a few years. When I had my consult with Diep I was almost out, and he wrote me a new proscar prescription and my local pharmacy (Kaiser) gave me what I think was the same manufacturer (pills looked identical, but I'm not sure if that means its the same or what) - Dr. Reddy's. I felt like over the last year the propecia wasn't as effective - I couldn't necessarily see anything visually but the hair just felt not as thick. So I had Diep write me a prescription for brand propecia and I just picked that up a few days ago. The price was ridiculous ($300 for 90 1mg pills from a local pharmacy in Cali - the tech there said this drug is rarely purchased). But...I had been doing some reading about peoples differing experiences between generics and brand and I figured I don't want to chance it with my finasteride being less effective. If the drug seems to have a noticeable effect in the crown area - I'll probably stick with the brand and go with Merck's proscar to cut the cost a little bit.
  13. Hi everyone, I have not been posting on this forum for the past few months because I have been preparing for my FUE procedure today. You guys can look at my previouse thread here to know more about my story: (http://www.hairrestorationnetwork.com/eve/185575-2250-fue-planned-july-dr-diep-2.html Eventhough after a lot of criticisms regarding my young and my objection regarding the use of Propecia, I received a lot of encouragments from other forum members as well as my family. This led to my decision to undergo an FUE transplant with Dr.Diep today. I know what I am getting into and that I will need more procedures down the road The surgery was not painful at all and Dr.Diep and his staffs were professional throughbout. Eventhough Dr. Diep suggested a more aggressive hairline, I chose a conservative hairline with medium density. I was schedule for 2250 grafts but they only used 2215 since my hair is very thick and I had a lot of multiple hair grafts (1218 singles and 997 multiples). I even had quite a bit of 4 -5 hair grafts) II will be posting regularly of my progress for other members to follow. After the procedure, I will look into using rogaine foam and maybe propecia to prevent further loss (last time i tried lipogaine minox I had a bad allergic reaction) I would like to send my special thanks to HTSoon and quidproqui for supporting my decision and helping me choose a great doctor. Here is the Day 1 Pre and Post Op Photos ( I literally just got back from the clinic) Pre Op: Post Op:
  14. Hey dude, It's looking so much better, and you look to be on track, so well done! Cannot see anything to be concerned about seeing as it's only been a few weeks. I was wondering id Dr. Diep discussed shaving your entire head, and placing any preventative grafts further back? I only ask as my pattern is similar to yours and I'd like to keep my hair as is, only extending the hairline just as you have - but I wasn't too sure on what surgeons recommend when it comes to any further loss. Best of luck mate, and happy growing!
  15. Dr. Diep and staff were incredibly professional. I initially reached out to Dr Diep, when i noticed my hair thinning out in the temple areas. Dr. Diep walked me through the process during the consultation. The procedure took about 10 hours. There was minimal pain associated with the process. The recovery period took about 2 weeks. I went back to work a week after the procedure.1 year post op I could not be happier with the results. Dr. Diep was able to fill in my temples. I would recommend Dr. Diep to anyone considering getting a FUE procedure done.
  16. Several years ago I had a surgery performed by Dr. Diep. Still very satisfied with the results. It's not easy selecting a surgeon for any type of surgery but it's especially hard in the case of hair restoration since the web is full of information and often mis-information. I definitely recommend Dr. Diep, especially if you chose to go the FUE/FUT route.
  17. 2 Month update Ugly duckling phase is no joke. I shaved my head weekly with a 0 guard for my first procedure so it wasn't as tough but this time I've just been letting it grow as I've read some claims of hair clippers damaging grafts. Even though Dr. Diep says it's fine after 2 weeks, i'm erring on the side of caution. Currently looks like shit though. Caboki still looks a little powderey in the hair, due to lack of length and density. I wore it to the gym today and I think it was passable but not great. Probably give it another week or so before wearing it into the office. Also added minoxidil around week 5 to help speed up the growth and have been taking biotin since about week 2 post-op. Seeing little sprouts but not sure if they're transplanted hair or just shock loss hair growing back. Front Overhead Overhead 2 Donor
  18. Hi, this is my first time posting on this forum. I have posted on other websites before when I first started losing my hair around age 22. I am now 27 and after long time considering getting an HT I finally took the plunge. I have been on minox and fin for the last five years and have recently added Dut as of 6 months ago. after looking around for surgeons I came across Dr. John Diep. I've seen his work and felt like he was the best choice especially since he specializes in FUE (I didn't want the strip method). I booked the procedure appointment back in May 2017 and it was set to happen November 2 2017 I had to book a cheap hotel room for two nights (night before, and night of procedure) so that I can get to the clinic at the 5:30am which they said would be the start of my procedure. As I got there at 5:30am they told me my appointment wasn't until 7:30 so I went back to my hotel and waited. Not sure what the mix up was but it wasn't too big of a deal, I just wanted to get started and get the day over with. Once I was done filling out the applications I was called into change clothes and talk to Dr. Diep. He drew over where my hairline should be and we agreed on where he would be filling in my hair line. He told me I was a NW4 on the scale. I was hoping he would be able to fill in my crown area as well which was thinning badly and he said if we had extra grafts he would do that. Unfortunately he was not able to touch the back and only filled the front with 2685 grafts (he was able to pull 185 extra grafts). Until then I can always put hair fibers to fill it in. As Dr. Diep said "The front is where the money is". after talking to him he gave me a concoction of meds and we went into the surgery room. They gave me a remote to watch netflix as they started prepping for extraction from the donor area. Before I knew it I was awoken to the telling me it was lunch time. Yep, I slept through the whole thing. I barely remember them shaving my whole head and only have a little memory of them injecting the antiseptic to numb my head. I ate a sandwhich and then fell back asleep. There were instances in which I woke up and heard the techs working on my head but I was in and out of it. Pretty much slept through the whole process and before I knew it there was one of the techs waking me up telling me about my take home baggy with all my stuff..at this point I was still kind of out of it but I was happy to hear that the whole thing was finishing up and I wasn't awake for any of it. The only pain I felt was during the injections. Other than that I don't remember any pain during extraction nor implantation. The whole process was from 7:30am- 5pm After the process was done, I was let go with a baggy full of drugs, shampoo, and post op care instructions. The staff and doctor were nice and the whole process went smoothly, even though I was asleep the whole time That night I slept at a 45 degree angle with pillows propping me up. The following picture were taken before so you can see where I was before the procedure:
  19. Hi everybody, I will be sharing my FUE hair transplant experience that I recently had done with Dr Diep. I would like to thank everyone who are actively posting on this forum (especially HTSoon his results were unreal and were an inspiration for me to choose Dr Diep) as it helped me immensely and after months of research I hope I made a wise choice in Dr Diep. We will see in the months to follow . A bit about me: Race: Asian Age: 28 Hair Quality: Medium/Coarse Norwood Scale: 6 Procedure Method: FUE No. of Grafts: 3200 Surgeon: Dr. John Diep Some background: I have been tackling hair loss since my early 20's and it has always bothered me. I am a good looking guy and used to get compliments in and out on my looks until I started losing hair. I felt like I was losing an important phase of my life to hairloss. I am destined to be a Norwood 6. My father is a Norwood 6 and a lot of the males on my father's side of the family are Norwood 6's. However, all males on my mother's side of the family have great hair. I was unlucky to have received the bad genes from my father's side. Previous Surgeries: This was my second FUE hair transplant after I had around 2300 grafts transplanted by FUE a couple of years back with a different surgeon, the results of which I feel were ok, not good or great. The aim of the first surgery was to cover basically half of my head extending into the middle of the top areas. Medications: I currently take Minoxidil and 1mg Finasteride daily. I was initially very reluctant in taking Finasteride after reading horror stories online but I decided to give it a try, thinking that I would stop it if I had sides. Luckily, Finasteride has not had any effects on me so far and on the contrary has been helping me keep a lot of my hair in the crown area. Choice of Surgeon: After my first hair transplant, I wanted to give the best possible shot on my second hair transplant. My aim was to restore a natural looking frontal hairline and add density into the already transplanted mid scalp. I narrowed down my choices to 3 surgeons; Lorenzo, Erdogan and Dr Diep. However I decided to go with Dr Diep as he tends to produce very natural looking hairlines. Consultation: I had my consultation with Dr Diep in March. He was very down to earth and willing to help me in any possible way. I told him about my previous FUE surgery and he immediately looked at my donor area to see how much hair I have remaining. He praised the quality of my hair and told me he can easily extract 2500 grafts this time and have around another 2000 - 2500 remaining in the donor for future procedures. I was satisfied with the consultation and decided to book a surgery date. The waiting time was around 7 months but I made it a point to Dr Diep's receptionist to let me know if there was a cancellation. Surgery Date (26 August 2017): My original surgery date was scheduled for 7th October however I was informed that there was a cancellation and since I was already on vacation from work, I decided to confirm the new surgery date. I woke up around 5 am and had a light breakfast. I was asked to arrive at Dr Diep's clinic at 5:30 am. I arrived at the clinic at 5:30 am and the receptionist gave me some paperwork to fill out. Once I was done with the paperwork, I was taken to Dr Diep's office. He reviewed the paperwork and then we started discussing possible hairline designs. He went very aggressive initially with the hairline placement but considering the extent of my hairloss, I tried to convince him to take a very conservative approach. We eventually decided to meet somewhere in the middle, not too aggressive and not too conservative. His reasoning was that the hairline should not be too low so that it draws attention and at the same time it should not be too high again to draw attention. He also mentioned that the frontal area is where all the money is. This convinced me to take the proportional route. After drawing the agreed upon hairline, they gave me some pain meds, anti anflamtory meds, and valium. I was taken into the surgery room and I had 4 nurses and Dr. Diep attending to my procedure. I changed in to my scrubs and sat down in the chair. By this time, the valium was kicking in and I was super drowsy. I don't remember when I was knocked out and fell asleep. I don't exactly remember but I woke up a couple of times for a few seconds during the extraction phase where I could hear Dr Diep and the nurses talking when he was extracting the follicles. I woke up for lunch around 1 pm. To my surprise, Dr Diep told me he was able to extract around 3200 follicles. He said my follicles were extremely easy to extract so he got a lot more than the initially planned 2500 grafts. I was shocked to hear this because the doctor that I had my first FUE surgery said my grafts were difficult to extract as they were very deep. I guess this proved Dr Diep's superior FUE skill set. Dr. Diep then started to design my hairline and slots where the hair follicles were to be inserted. Once the follicles were ready for insertion, I had 2-3 nurses working on inserting. The procedure was done at 5:30 pm and I slept through most of the insertion phase as well. Dr Diep was very professional and he assured me this transplant would change my look. I was very happy to hear that. Below you can see the attached photos right after the procdure and the last one being taken 4 days post op. I will be posting regular updates and If you have any questons or concerns, do not hesistate to ask!
  20. So I’ve consulted with a couple of Doctors and I’ve decided to book my FUT with Dr. Diep. Procedure will be 7/12/19 which his first available date. I am not thrilled with how long the wait is so I am going to continue to consult with other doctors. I will only change doctors if I find another surgeon who I have confidence in as well. I went with Diep, because I am Black/mixed and he has more Black before and afters than any doctor I’ve come across in my research. I went with FUT because though it leaves a scar, we (those with curly hair get better growth) he suggested we do FUE to the scar once it heals. Another Dr suggested I could also do SMP to the scar. Either way it can be addressed. I’ll post pics soon. I’m also open to other suggestions as well because researching Doctors has been a real task. Thank
  21. No my surgeon was Dr. Diep, in California. I live in California, so was a no-brainer for me. That said, F&B have plenty of reviews on here.
  22. Dr. Diep does mostly FUE, and if you look at his results it doesn't appear that the larger punch size has affected his end results. I haven't seen any permanent shock loss, or excessive scarring on any of his video's.
  23. This is something that’s been regurgitated for quite some time. In fact, I’ve heard arguments on both sides. As patients, we don’t really know all of the surgical intricacies. One surgeon may favor a smaller punch and another a larger punch. One may favor a manual and another a motorized. Every surgery has it’s particular set of tools, just like anything. Dr. Konoir made a great analogy of what’s better a flathead screwdriver or a phillips head screwdriver? Depends on the job. My first surgery was 1mm punches and second was .9mm no adjacent damage. Btw you think your crown looks ridiculous look at how mine was, btw thats .9mm with Dr. Diep as well.
  24. I'm 64 and started losing some hair in my 30's. In 1992 I decided to fly from Michigan to Chicago for a Bosley procedure. I guess back then the doll hair plugs were about all anyone did, and that's exactly what they gave me. In the front, and some in the crown. I was supposed to go back for them to put in a hairline, but I wasn't confident they could give me a natural hairline so I never went. I didn't have internet access until 1995 so that limited my ability to research anyone else. In January 2018 I decided I wanted to do something about these plugs. My hair had thinned a little on top and I had lost some coverage. I was wearing a hat more and more, and was always conscious if the wind blew, these things would stand out like a sore thumb. I spent many hours on YT watching hundreds of videos, and decided on Dr. Diep. I contacted the office and sent them the requested pictures. They gave me an appointment for a Skype consultation with Dr. Diep. He gave me an estimate, answered my questions, and gave me additional information. He said for FUE he's backed up about 7 months. Because I had a previous FUT with Bosley I chose to go that route. Already had a scar, maybe 6 inches. The FUT appointment was made for Feb 12, 2018, so I only had to wait about 5 weeks. I flew from New Mexico to San Jose on Sat Feb 10. I had to be at the office in Los Gatos Monday at 5:30 am and I arrived as requested. I brought the forms with me they had mailed, and they were pretty much filled out. I only had to sign a few things. Jennie gave me a menu to choose what I wanted for lunch, then she took me in the operating room. I put on the booties, and the two gowns. About 6am the Dr came in. Jennie led me to his office where I met the Dr. Dr. Diep is a very friendly, nice man. Very intelligent, and I was always at ease with him. Jennie brought me in a little cup with about 7 pills in it, and Dr. explained what each one was. (I only remember the 3 valiums). He drew the proposed hairline, with a couple minor adjustments I agreed. Back into the operating room and the reclining chair in front of a big flat screen. She took my blood pressure a couple times. I was watching the news, and the next thing I remember there were two girls, one on each side planting the grafts. No memory of the FUT or making the places for the grafts. Also no pain whatsoever. I was awake for most of the placements and it was difficult for me to remain still for a couple hours. I was supposed to go back the next day at 9 am for a wash, but overslept, and had to get to the airport. They had shaved just the front of my head. When I got home I decided to shave the rest of my head. It took me awhile, I had to be careful not to cut any of the sutures, so I didn't do a real clean job of it. Oh well, it'll grow out. The wound looks pretty ghastly. I have had zero pain in the recipient area. Nothing but a little itching, but no touching. In the donor area I can't call it pain. It's more like a dull ache, maybe a 2 on a scale to 10. It's day five post op as I'm writing this, and I barely feel it. I'm still sleeping sitting up with a towel around my neck, and I'll probably be doing that for another week or so. I've read others saying they had a lot of pain and discomfort, but I truly have not. I was quite anxious about this, but it's turned out pretty well. I took tylenol the first couple nights to help me sleep, and that's it. He gave me a prescription for pain meds but I didn't need them. They gave me a package of anti-biotics, and anti-swelling, which I'm taking. I had swelling roll down my temples to my cheekbones, but it's about all gone now. Dr. Diep had also given me two injections of steroids for swelling. Now the healing process, shedding, and regrowing. Lol, the last time my hair was this short was when I was 13 in 1966.
