Advice for Hair Loss Sufferers Considering Hair Transplant Surgery

My Story

  1. This fellow is a friend of the practice and had FUE about 6 years ago. Now he has fine hairs and has a decent FUE result. Had he had donor hair as thick as his beard hairs....we'd have hit a grand slam home run. I suspect at some point we'll be doing another case to add in behind his transplant where he's thinned a bit...and of course we'll add some grafts to his hairline. FUE simply doesn't grow as well as strip due to root avulsion stress which I've discussed in 50 videos or so. But John is happy and probably more importantly, so is his girlfriend. The video is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Wg3OL9zN2A&feature=youtu.be Dr Lindsey McLean VA
  2. This client had 3,084 hair grafts transplanted by the FUE method by Dr. Diep, restoring his hairline & both temple edges and filling in the frontal area as well. The hair grafts break down are as followed: FUE 3,084 hair grafts One hair roots= 489 grafts Two hair roots= 1,648 grafts Three hair roots= 661 grafts Four hair roots=286 grafts Total hair roots is 3,084 grafts. 3. It is with great pleasure to be able to announce the arrival of Bisanga and Cole Hair Transplant Clinic. Formed by two of the leading FUE surgeons today, coalition member Dr. Christian Bisanga and Dr. John Cole. The clinic is based in Athens, Greece and will be officially opening for its first round of patients on March 2017 of this year. With Dr. Bisanga based out of Brussels, Belgium and Dr. Cole out of the U.S. Why Greece you may ask? Well that's a great question. Quoting Dr. Cole - Many patients are focused on price. This leads patients to clinics offering very low prices in countries that are often not as safe and with fewer government regulations to protect patients. For this reason, Dr. Bisanga and I decided to form a clinic with the express intent to offer price-conscious patients an alternative solution at "low" prices. We will personally supervise the surgeries to make sure patients get the best possible outcomes. As mentioned, Bisanga and Cole Hair Transplant Clinic are able to offer luxury hair transplant procedures from the industry leaders at extremely competitive prices. Dr Cole went on to say - It looks like the first round of surgery starting March 27 will come in at 2.5 euro per graft. I'm sure happy to be involved in this opportunity. On a personal note, I am extremely honoured to be patient advisor to such highly esteemed hair restoration physicians, and in such a visionary project. Many of you reading this may already be familiar with me from being active on this forum. My personal journey with hair loss is my motivating factor to getting involved with Bisanga and Cole Hair Transplant Clinic. Experiencing hair loss at a young age and being hugely effected by this, I struggled greatly with insecurity and a lack of confidence due to hair loss which several years later, eventually led me to a FUT procedure. The results definitely helped me to get back my confidence and unquestionably improved my day to day life. I aspire to be able to serve individuals, build relationships and offer honest and ethical advice, guidance and solutions for their hair loss concerns. To be able to consider undergoing a FUE procedure with such ethical Doctors achieving such consistent quality results at this price point allows individuals, who may normally be priced out of choosing these physicians, accessibility to their expertise. If anybody has any interest, questions or queries regarding this new project, don't hesitate to ask. Also, by all means contact me privately if I can assist you with anything or you would like to consult with the clinic. Many thanks.
  4. Hi @Recedinggenes, there's a couple factors that i would suggest you do, first try to get an online consultation from both if you can. You will be able to ask alot of questions and they will be able to tell you the process and what would be a good fit for you. I did it with Dr. Hasson and felt very comfortable with speaking to both Chris and Doug and eventually Dr. Hasson to make a formal decision. I am not quite familiar with Dr. Gabel but the staff and Dr. Hasson are really personable and fantastic whom take very good care of you. His results are amazing as you can see through multiple people's results in the forum. However, I just got mine 5 days ago so I am basing it off what i just been through so far. Another factor why I decided to go with Dr. Hasson is due to location was key as i wanted to be closer to where I live, and Dr.Hasson's team constantly posts recent patience's results in this forum which showcase his amazing work. I kinda like that about a team whom is really proud of their projects. And If you are from out-of-town they do provide some reimbursement credit for accommodation i believe. Side note, I was also considering Dr.Diep but they lack communication was very poor, till this day I am still on their waiting list since Sept 2018 and had never had any email indicating when the next opening is. Luckily I did not give them my deposit as they request for it. I can only imagine what kind of communication I get if I needed post-op care. Good Luck.
  5. I was really happy with the results of my hair transplant. I decided to do the FUE procedure. The staff was very friendly and were able to answer all my questions regarding the procedure. I would recommend Dr. John Diep if you are interested in getting a hair transplant. After my hair transplant procedure, I started to see results within the 3rd month.
  6. Thanks Shoowon! Yes, to clarify the "harsh lighting" pics are comparable to my prior pics and were all taken in my bathroom with the vanity lights on. The soft lighting is just in other rooms in the house, not directly under a light. I think the combination paints a more complete picture. Thanks RecessionProof! Yes, Toppik is more effective now, although not perfect since my loss is in the very front. I've had a bit of luck applying Toppik to the mid scalp and leaning forward while patting my head. This disperses a more conservative amount. I did get called out by a friend who knows I had work done for having powder on my head so my technique still needs some refining lol! Thanks Vic! Dr. Diep did the extractions himself. Not really sure on the manual vs motorized punch as he gave me his "Bill Cosby Cocktail" beforehand, so I don't really remember the details--but I'm assuming it's just whichever one he usually uses. Thanks HLP! Not really sure on donor healing timeline but I've read it's pretty consistent with the 1 year growth period. Melvin saw continued healing after the 5 month mark if i remember correctly, so that's encouraging.
  7. Hey guys just wanted to share my story with you and hopefully get some good results that I can document along the way. Several years ago I had a transplant by a doctor in Reno Nevada named Dr. Wesley Hall Sr. I was looking to lower my naturally hi hairline and frame my face better but instead I ended up with some terrible pitting, little to no growth, and a bad hair line design that resembled one of a female. The doctor suggested I only needed 600 grafts believe it or not. And when the first procedure failed he did it a second time at no charge with the exact same results, again implanting 600 additional grafts. As you can imagine after two failed transplants I felt like I had no hope, and thought that perhaps I was just one of those few cases where hair transplants don't work. I was lucky enough to get my money refunded before Dr. Hall closed shop and disappeared. He was the only hair transplant surgeon in Reno Nevada. I remember the two technicians that assisted him with the hair transplant seemed very new, with little to no experience. I made the mistake to not do my research, did not even ask to see before and after pictures, and just assumed that a doctor Who owned a hair transplant clinic would know what he was doing. Lesson learned. If you get anything from my story I hope it's that you do your research, that you follow instructions, and that if there's any red flags whatsoever you run the other direction. After years of depression, wearing hats and keeping my hair long to disguise the botched transplant, and dwindling self-esteem and confidence, I decided to do something about it and made a decision to go see Dr. Diep in San Jose. As you can imagine I'm still a little skeptical of this one turning out like the rest but I plan to follow the instructions by the book and hopefully with a more positive attitude and suggestions from folks like yourselves I can get better results and put this tragic experience behind me. I'm really hoping for the third time's the charm. My surgery was on Thursday, August 10th 2017. Dr. Diep and his crew implanted 2022 total follicles in a little over 6 1/2 hours using the FUT method. I went with the strip method because the previous doctor had left a very large and unattractive donor area scar that I also needed revised. Dr. Diep removed some of the old transplants that gave me the circle/feminine hairline and drew out a brand new design that I really like. Dr. Diep surgery was significantly less painful than my two prior ones with Dr. Hall, I was completely knocked out for 75% of the surgery itself. Attached are pictures from my old transplant results and postop pictures after my surgery with Dr. Diep today in San Jose. If you have any questions, comments, or most importantly advice for me I would greatly appreciate it. At this point I want to make sure that I do everything in my power and control for this surgery to produce optimal results.
  8. BACKGROUND I'm in my late 20s and started receding around the age of 18. my scalp is very light compared to my forehead. my natural hairline sat right on the line where the pigmentation changed color. (Pictured) I stalked these forums regularly but never posted until recently. I'm Latino with African/Italian ancestry, my hair grows straight for about .5cm before it curls over. I'm located in NY Moving Forward I consulted online or in person with various doctors that were recommended on these forums the likes of (Arocha, Bloxham, Diep, Vories, and Frank). after many Q&As with each I felt most comfortable with Dr.Arocha in Texas. I flew to TX on Thursday met him and the staff that same day we went over my loss and future strategies as well as design. He recommended a higher hairline than the one I received based on the rule of thirds which I understood but felt it wasn't near my original hairline. we agreed on a lower line (pictured) The Big Day After medications and local numbing was administer a strip was taken from back of the head – 3140 grafts were harvested. Dr. Arocha mentioned he was aiming for 40 grafts cm2 coverage and that my hair was straight at short length. He did the strip removal, stitching and incisions at recipient site. Technicians did the graft cutting and placement. The procedure was done on FRIDAY I was very pleased with the service. everyone from medical staff and administration were very welcoming and ensure I had an excellent operation. it was to such extent that Dr. Arocha came in on Saturday to review the post op and ensure things were okay. he even gave me a tour of the city in his personal car. he even had one staff member come in on Saturday - the same day as her son's birthday just in case some work was needed (thanks Michelle). On Sunday (Father’s Day) he called to check up on me. Again, I’m extremely pleased with the service. Has First week post op I had swelling which is normal which has gone down considerably between days 4-7. I have followed the post op instructions to the T. I have used the shampoo and bacitracin provided by the Doctor as per instructed no harsh touching and trickle water. I feel like the treatment and operation were world class and I’m inclined to use the doctor again Pictures posted include my original hairline, my baldness pattern, hairline design and post op results at day 5/6. Please contact for any questions I will maintain this thread with my progression. PLEASE FEEL FREE TO CONTACT WITH QUESTIONS
  9. I had a recent FUE with Dr. Diep and since this forum was helpful in deciding, I'm contributing my own thread. I'm a NW 4/5a with stable loss for 15+ years. The 4/5a pattern recedes straight back, so it looks pretty bad from the front, and I just got tired of looking at it. I chose Dr. Diep for his impressive FUE results and aesthetic sense. The goal of this procedure was to reconstruct the frontal third. After waiting 9 months, surgery day went very smoothly: paperwork at 5:30, met with Dr. Diep to go over the plan at 6:00, took sedatives and slept through almost all of it, waking up for lunch and at at the end, around 5. Here is the top and donor, pre-op.
  10. Saw you on Dr. Diep’s video. I’m glad you came back your results look fantastic. There’s another blonde guy who’s documenting his procedure on here as well. I hope you’ll start a new thread when you have your next procedure.
  11. This is exactly what my case looks like too! What is the density Dr. Diep achieved in this procedure OP?
  12. I’m going to disagree with you Gas, Dr. Diep used the zig-zag pattern of micro-irregularities by using placing 1 hair fu’s in a zig zag pattern. This is his calling card for hairlines he mentions this in his videos a lot. Understandable you wouldn’t know since you don’t follow his work, some may not like it. I for one think the zig zags make the hairline appear natural when it's grown out. Also, I was just as bald as this guy with a similar hairline. It can be restored with multiple sessions, but no one should think they can restore the head completely in one session with a Norwood 6 level of balding.
  13. Thanks John! I like Dr. Vories and he's on my top list of surgeons right now. However, I'm 29 and a worried about my future balding pattern so I'm still in the deciding phase of FUE vs FUT. If I were to go FUE, I think I would choose him.
  14. You’re worrying is not helping your bf to be honest. You chose a clinic with one of the biggest portfolios on the web. It’s totally normal to have buyers remorse. But you should be encouraging your bf and not causing him further distress. I’ve included how my hair looked before and right after, it looks pretty much like your boyfriend’s. I’m also including my most recent YouTube video. Dr. Diep changed my life your bf chose a good doc now just try to get him to relax.
  15. His rep John posts on here, if you do a search you’ll see there’s been quite a few. Just search Dr. Vories name and they’ll pull up.
  16. My 2 cents: - The "young" technicans have nothing to do with it, as I assume the slits and the overall plan was made by Dr. Diep - The hairline design looks atypical for a top surgoen as it seems to lack micro irregularities - The amount of grafts and the overall distribution appears strange for such a high NW (but maybe the pics are misleading) Honestly, if I had to make a guess, I would not have guessed this would be a result from a top clinic.
  17. The grafts do seem placed in an orderly configuration but do seem densely packed. Dr. Diep is a fine surgeon and I’m sure has trained his technicians very well. You may want to look back in the archives of this website and see if you can find pictures of post-op pictures from Dr. Diep and see how they compare. I’m sure the results 4-5 months from now will be just fine. You will, however, have to come up with another 20K for 2-3,000 more grafts for a more fuller look and coverage. That said...... I’m always amazed at the cost per graft in different parts of the country. I know SF is a high cost area and people living in that area may be fine with the cost per graft. In comparison, I was a Norwood VI and had 5,250 grafts done over the course of two and a half consecutive days. The technician was important and helpful but at this clinic every graft is removed and placed by the surgeon. I know there are many skilled technicians but its very reassuring knowing the surgeon is doing all of the extractions and placements of the grafts. Also, the cost is half as much ($4-5 per graft) plus a $350 plane ticket and all 5,000+ grafts were done in one visit. Best of luck going forward but I’m sure the results will please you in a few months. Be patient, you have plenty to look forward to.
  18. Did your bf ever consider doing FUT over FUE, so a strip surgery? When you have that level of diffused thinning FUE doesn't seem like a smart choice to me being you need as many grafts as you can get, surely Dr. Diep discussed a plan with him
  19. After about a year of mostly lurking on this forum, I have finally done a FUE procedure and am happy to share it with all of you to give back to this very helpful community here. Background is I am 39 and have had gradual hair loss in the front only since around 24 years old. I started taking Rogaine + propecia back then and it slowed things down, but now I’m tired of my high hairline (Norwood 2-3) so decided to get FUE. I cut my hair short so FUE made sense. I live in San Francisco so Diep was the best of the 3 or so local FUE docs I looked at. I called 2 of the more established LA-based doctors, but Diep seemed in the same league (he trained with Rassman, one of the pioneers of FUE) plus the idea of flying to/from the procedure was not ideal. Also my hair is slightly kinky (I am half latin, half white) and Diep specializes in this sort of kinky/curly hair. For peace of mind, I did explain to Diep beforehand not to take hair from high up on the back of my head, to angle it correctly in the front in a natural way, etc. Basically to avoid the "nightmare" scenarios you read about on forums from time to time So on Friday I got the FUE done with 1500 grafts and also the optional A-cell treatment (research on A-Cell is not clear, but it anecdotally does seem to help). Procedure went smooth and ran like 10am-4pm. Not much pain at all and frankly I was in a bit of a haze the whole time given the meds. BTW, Diep does zig zag the hairline a bit so it is more natural (straight hairline is not natural) and also he does put hair in the front into areas that already do have existing hair to create a more natural look. Hair from the back is diff than hair in the front so blending back of the head hair into front of the head hair is key. And if you are wondering why all the donor hairs are from the back right, it is because he works right-to-left and also each extraction traumatizes the hairs around it, hence better to leave a fresh untouched donor area on the left that I can come back to years from now if I need another FUE. Attached first 2 pics are right before the procedure (in reality my hair actually looks *worse* than in these pre pics). Next 2 are right after it. Next two are day 1. Next 2 are day 2, where I am right now. I am happy with the results and healing is going well. I am following all the post-op steps including 2 showers a day with GraftCyte shampoo (free from the doctor) with no direct water to the donor or recipient areas. And then after the showers, bacitracin ointment to the donor areas. Also I have been taking Vitamin C every day since about a week prior to the procedure. Lastly, I am using saline every few hours to keep things moist. The saline spray can from Walgreens sprays too hard, so I spray it into a smaller plastic spray bottle (also from Walgreens) so the saline comes out in a fine mist and will not harm the hairs. Also, Diep is doing well these days with many patients. Diep got me a free driver to/from his clinic. I asked the driver about out-of-state patients and the driver told me he does a lot of airport pickups/drop-offs for out-of-state patients for Diep. And while I was at the clinic, Diep had finished a non-fue (flap) procedure earlier and the patient was there. On the way out, 2 patients from the day before came in for their post-op shampoos. And the Dr told me is moving to a larger facility down the street. All of this evidence of course is non-scientific, but it points to a competent doctor. Lousy docs get bad reps fast and business tends to dry up. Anyhow please reply with any questions/comments!
  20. Hey all I’m 23 and since I was 17 the temples of my hairline have receded and I have very minimal crown loss . I’ve been using minoxidil with dermarolling for the last 3 months on my hairline but all I can see are very tiny vellus hairs along my hairline. However for the past couple days I’ve been having day long migraines and I suspect it might be the minoxidil so I’m stopping use until around next week. This is Me Side Angles As you can see my temples are fairly receded and if I were to fill them out straight across I would have a relatively normal hairline for a black man Now the general consensus for getting hair transplants at this age is to not do it because they can look worse as you age. Everyone recommends fin however I don’t want to live my life in fear of side or of the crash so I’ve decided against it. And also, my family on my mothers side has a history of balding primarily on the hairline. Not sure about my fathers side , my dad is bald however . Now these are my uncles on my mothers side , all of these pictures are taken between the ages of 30-50ish Uncle 1 Uncle 2 Uncle 3 And this is the only uncle I could find on my fathers side, here is his hairline Now as you can see the guys on my mothers side have fairly receded temples with their widows peak stop being pretty far out. They’re not slick bald but they’ve chosen the bald look which is cool for them but not something I want to do. Looking at their hairlines and mine would you advise getting a transplant at my age? I don’t mind getting a couple throughout my lifetime and I’m actually scheduled for a consultation with Dr. Diep next month.
  21. After seeing my hairline fade away I wanted to find a way to get it back. I searched for solutions for about a year. I found Dr. Diep and saw all the remarkable before and after videos. I knew this was for me. I had 2678 graphs moved to my hairline. After my one year follow-up the results are phenomenal...Dr. Diep has brought my youth back. Looking back at old photos I never realized how much hair I had lost compared to what I have now. I have scheduled another procedure with Dr. Diep to enhance my wonderful new hairline. If you are looking to get some of your self-esteem back I recommend you see Dr. Diep..
  22. Im scheduled to do 1500 grafts FUT. with Dr. Diep In June. I scheduled the appt back in October and June 24 was his first available appointment. I have no idea if Im going to keep the appt or not because June through September are my busiest work months and i will not be able to take a week off for down time. I booked the appt to get on the books with the hopes that he will have a cancellation sooner but so far no such luck. Im still consulting with Doctors but Diep has the most before and afters of guys with Black hair characteristics and he seems to acheive the density Im looking for so Ive gone with him at this point. If i cant get in sooner i may have to push it to the fall which will be frustrating. I Will document my updates, changes, procedure process, and results here.
  23. While I don’t doubt Dr. Couto is an excellent surgeon, one thing you have to take into account is that 90% of his work is on Spanish patients who have just about the best hair to transplant. Not saying I wouldn’t put him top 5, but that’s an important factor. Dr Lorenzo also deserves a mention Dr Hasson is my personal top pick for obvious reasons Dr Wong is also up there Dr Konior seems to be another great and surgical surgeon I agree with Dr Ferudini also Dr Shipiro x2 Dr Alexander Dr Diep That’s probably my 10 personal favourites not in order, my top 3 in order would probably be 1)Hasson 2)Konior 3)Lorenzo/Couto
