Advice for Hair Loss Sufferers Considering Hair Transplant Surgery

My Story

  1. You are a very difficult case, before you decide to have surgery ask yourself this, will a bad result bother you more than your hair loss? Because after you have surgery you will NEVER be able to return to being a normal bald guy. That said, I think you should definitely consider strip first, and I don't think you've searched our forum enough if you think there aren't a lot of hasson and wong reviews. I think they have a ton of reviews on here and examples of cases like yours. Also, I think $12 a graft for Konior is false. Last time I checked he was around $10 for FUE and $8 for FUT. I suggest submitting online consultations to each of these surgeons here for the actual price. Dr. Pak, works with Rassman who actually trained Dr. Diep, as for gut feelings I think you should always choose a surgeon you trust and have faith in, I chose Diep, and so did one of my best friends, and his results at 4 months look amazing. https://www.hairtransplantnetwork.com/Consult-a-Physician/hair-transplant-surgeons.asp?sr=HRN
  2. Hey all, I'm a 34 year old guy with fine blonde hair that has receded at the hairline and temples a decent amount. I've been perusing this site off and on for years now and have finally decided to pull the trigger on a procedure. I originally was scheduled to go to Belgium for a procedure, but do to the climate of the world these days, have elected to go a different route. I didn't make that decision with ease, as I've seen great surgeries coming out of Belgium, Turkey, and Spain. However, I live in the California Bay Area and have been following Dr John Diep's results closely, and have been impressed. I am of course nervous about the outcome of the procedure, but have been on the fence for far too long and feel like it's time to go for it. Dr Diep quoted me about 2500 grafts FUE. With all the research I've done, that was about what I was expecting. The fact that my hair is so fine makes me think that I'm going to need 2 surgeries for the density that I want, but so be it if it ends up looking the way that I want it to. I'm also concerned about the temples looking natural. That seems to be one of the more difficult things for surgeons and the techs to get right. Again though, I've seen some good ones come from Diep's office. While I've mostly seen positive things from Dr Dieps office, I've seen some negative posts on here from a few years back as well, both of which I believe were FUT. I actually called and am going in for a second consultation with Diep next week to ask questions about his techs, my hairline design, how big of a punch they will use, expected yield, etc. My HT is currently scheduled for Feb 18, so just over a month away. Would love to hear back from past Diep patients or anyone with fine lighter colored hair who's had FUE done to restore hairline and temples.
  3. I received an FUE treatment from Dr. Diep in mid-2018 when I was 30 years old. At the time I was about a Norwood 3/4. My hair loss was expected due to a family history of hair loss. I just didn't expect it to progress so quickly at the age of 26/27. My Time with Dr. Diep was never rushed, from the moment I arrived I felt taken care of and he listened to all of my concerns. We decided to go with the FUE of 2,500 grafts; the majority to be placed in the frontal area of the scalp. During the procedure he was able to get up to 3,200 grafts, a pleasant surprise! If you decide to go with Dr. Diep, you will be scheduled to arrive very early in the morning around 6AM or so. You will go over the surgery briefly and then be given a benzodiazepine to help with pre-surgery anxiety. Additionally, you will be given a drug named Versed, a sedative hypnotic that helps you remain still and calm throughout the surgery. Versed also has amnesia related effects that are quite common. Keep in mind the amnesia effects are present only during the time that the drug is active in your system. For me personally, it felt like I was only in surgery for 2 hours, however I was in surgery for approximately 10 hours or so. No pain was present and I was sent home with pain medication in case it became a problem. Post-surgery, you will have to be careful with after care and really pay mind to the sheet of paper spelling out all the things you should do. I personally did not see the new hair start growing in until around the 6 month mark. Scarring on the sides of my head were noticeable up to 8 months. I've recently shaved the sides of my head down to 4 mm and can no longer see any signs of scarring. All in all, I'm very pleased with the outcome of my hair and Dr. Diep truly is a master of creating a new hairline. I highly recommend him. At the very least, set up a consultation, there's nothing to lose.
  4. Seems like u dont want to go outside the West coast. THAT is one of the worst mistakes anyone could make is refusing to widen their HT surgeon horizon. The world is a big place! I don't know where ur getting the first two names as GREAT surgeons or clinics. U clearly haven't done much research if ur listing those two clowns as ur top picks! Stay off the Real self crap and Instagram. Bottom line is THIS forum is where u should be looking for a HT surgeon. Gabel is ok and so is Diep but they will rape u in fees. Diep I would consider a Top HT doctor tho. Gabel I would not. Erdogan is the best period. Second best imo would be Dr. Maras from HDC..... Although Vorhies in SC is pretty dam good too and reasonably priced for a US doctor. Mohebi is a good pick if looking to do large body hair transplant otherwise not even close to a TOP pick. Most of US doctors rape their patients with outrageous fees. Not because they have outrageous malpractice insurance either like many claim. They're just greedy. Dr. Nader in Mexico I would also put up there as the TOP HT Doctor. He doesn't get a lot of attention and doesn't do much advertising but he is extremely CHEAP and VERY GOOD! Most ppl dont want to travel outside the US and therefore settle on someone decent here in the states. There are great surgeons here but u will pay 2-3x as much money and get no better results. For something that will last u a lifetime DECENT isn't really what u should be looking for.
  5. Hi All, I am in my late 30s, I still have my hair but have been thinning in frontal line, I would say between class II and III. I do a very good job camouflaging it with products and forward combing. My hair has been stable like this for more than 10 years (extra thinning comes in phases every decade). I have been thinking about doing something proactive about this for more than 10 years but didn't have the courage. A week ago, for no apparent reason, I decided to do that. I am just sick of the amount of products and blow-drying I do and honestly wanna more freedom in styling my hair. Well, you only live once, so why not enjoy every moment of it? Here are my criteria : Very natural modern looking results, I like tight hair lines with great packing. FUE, I am not comfortable with FUT recovery or the scar, the idea of cutting strip just doesn't appeal to me ! I don't want to wait too long for surgery Partially shaved (I am keeping my hair long in the back for that reason). No shaving of recipient area, I can comb hair forward to cover the grafts Doctor does the work himself Someone who is available to answer questions and who takes personal interest in his patients, you know, I don't want to be just a number to someone super famous! No constraints in location. Anywhere in USA/Canada is good from fiddling around, I have this list: Dr. Jae Pack from NHI (I have reading lots of his answers on realself) LA FUE Hair clinic (they have amazing instagram and YT Channel), I know that Jacques is a PA from this form. Dr. Parsa Mohebi Dr. Steven Gabel Dr. John Diep (is he really booked for one year?) I met with Dr. Pack (he estimated 1900 grafts are needed), and have meetings scheduled in few days with Dr. Mohebi and Dr. Gabel (got lucky with last minute openings in both cases). I am impressed with Dr. Mohebi, Dr. Diep and Dr. Gabel results. I have been also following Dr. Diep for a while but I heard he is booked for one year? I am still to schedule with LA FUE clinic. What other names do you guys recommend? and if you recommend a name can you please let me know why you recommend him and if you have had a personal interaction with him? Thanks
  6. When Bosley did my first FUT in 1992 (yikes-those plugs), they didn't offer FUE. Not sure if anyone did because I didn't have internet until 1995. Thankfully my FUT with Dr. Diep in Feb. 2018 camouflaged them...they're gone. He gave me a great natural looking hairline, best thing I've ever done for myself. But that FUT looked ghastly for about six months. Can barely see the scar now.
  7. Hi all! Long time lurker here but first time posting. This site has helped me a lot on this journey. Thank you and here are my results with Dr. Diep. My hair has been thinning and hairline receding since I was in my mid 20s. My hairline was becoming embarrassing as it kept getting higher and higher each year. I spent countless hours researching about hair loss to find a solution to my problem. I refused to use products like Rogane or Propecia. While researching, it seemed that a hair transplant procedure was the obvious and permanent answer. However, I didn't know who to approach for help as I did not know any family or friends that has gone through such a procedure. Even if they did, I'm sure they wouldn't have mentioned about it. I spent about 1-2 years lurking around on forums like Hair Restoration Network to see doctors work from around the world. That's when I found reviews about a doctor that creates the most natural hairline in the country. The hairline master, Dr. Diep! It's about time I contacted them and scheduled a consultation. I was able to do the consultation at the clinic in Los Gatos instead of a video consultation. Dr. Diep and his staff made me feel welcomed and at ease. They were able to answer all of my question. At the time, I didn't know if I was going with a FUT or FUE procedure. I met with Dr. Diep and he recommended me to do a 2500 FUE on my front hairline since I like to wear my hair short. You can always make money but can't undo a linear scar from a FUT procedure. On the day of the procedure, I came into the clinic at 6AM with barely any sleep as I was so nervous. A staff gave me a set of clothes to change into and asked me what I wanted for lunch. When lunch was decided, I met with Dr. Diep to sign a bunch of paperwork and gave me some pills to take before beginning the procedure. To be honest, I was knocked out 95% of the operation. I woke up once for lunch and another time when I started to feel a slight tingling sensation on my scalp. I fell asleep again shortly after. Dr. Diep was able to extract 2700 grafts. A little over 200 more grafts than initially planned. Overall, the procedure was very smooth and painless. I came back to the clinic the following day to let Dr. Diep take a look at my scalp and await further instructions. Another staff brought me to a room and gently washed my hair to demonstrate how to wash during the next few days without damaging any grafts. It's been such a great experience and wish I had it done sooner! I can see why there is a 7-9 month wait to have Dr. Diep perform such fantastic artwork. It's been over a year and my hairline is looking amazing! I've posted normal post-surgery photos on social media and I've received many comments like "You look younger now" and "how are you ageing backwards??!" No one seems to noticed that I got a FUE done. I highly recommend Dr. Diep and his staff if you are looking to get a FUE done. Attached are photos before procedure, few days after procedure and 1 year after procedure. Before A few days after 1 year after

  9. I haven't had my transplant procedure yet, but I wanted to share my experience with two different Tampa-area clinics, which I just recently visited. I went to Tampa with the full intention of having the procedure done by the Hair and Scalp Laser Clinic in Clearwater. I had done about two years of reading and research and I felt comfortable with the reputation of Dr. Paul Riggs. When I got there for my consultation, however, I learned that Dr. Riggs was no longer associated with this practice. That was my first red flag... no one mentioned this until I flew in for the procedure. Instead, the work would be performed by Dr. Michael Markou. I know nothing about this guy and he may well be a fine surgeon, but I want my work done by a world-class physician, not some guy trying to gain experience. I never even met with the doctor, only a consultant. This consultant, John Satino, was certainly a nice guy, very helpful and very informative, but I was leery about the fact that I didn't get to meet the doctor during my consultation. I called to cancel the procedure. While I was there, though, I made an appointment with Dr. Paul Rose, who has a sterling reputation and is obviously one of the pre-eminent practitioners in this field. The contrast could not have been more apparent. His office was so accomodating (they got me in with just two days' notice), and Dr. Rose himself was very professional and thorough in his evaluation. He took the time to ask about my family history and my goals for my appearance. He took the time to thoroughly explain his techniques, drew in the outline of what would be my new hairline, and answered all my questions and even offered information I would not have thought of. There is a reason Dr. Rose has the stellar reputation he's got, and I will likely go with him for my procedure. He obviously cares a great deal about not only running his business, but also about creating truly magnificent looking hair.
  10. Dr Diep ~ 1776 Grafts Via FUE ~ 25 y/o Asian Male ~ Norwood 3 What's going on, guys? I've been lurking this site for some time now and finally got a FUE procedure performed by Dr. Diep in late August 2018 to fill in the standard Norwood 3 recession. The following pictures is 8 weeks post op. I will keep you guys updated on my progress.
  11. You hit the nail on the head, Dr. Diep pretty much said the same thing. They live in a bubble, and they believe any doctor that practices in an expensive area of LA must be doing good work i.e Beverly Hills, Bel-Air etc. I was watching a podcast recently with David Spade and he was talking about hair transplants, and how surgeons have it down to a science with a robot. I chuckled to myself, but then I thought man it's sad that so many famous and wealthy people are so ill-informed. I really wish more people knew about this forum, it would save them a lot of money and most importantly save them from bad results.
  12. I had a 4,000 graft FUT procedure with Dr. Diep in April, 2014 - just over 5 years ago. Generally speaking, I am pleased with the result of the procedure itself. However, the the scar I was left with was very wide, and hair never regrew in a fairly large area around the scar on both sides of my head - about 2 inches wide and 0.5-0.75 inches vertically. I have since sought the opinion of other hair surgeons who have said this is not a typical result, but I didn't think much of it, and at my one-year follow-up Dr. Diep said that he could fill in the area with an FUE into the scar procedure and I could schedule it at my convenience. Scheduling that follow-up FUE procedure has been very difficult. It has happened three separate times that I have been told a date is mine, only to have them come back the next day to say the date was no longer available, with no explanation. Dr. Diep's office has consistently given me conflicting information, ignored emails, and not returned phone calls. I first emailed to inquire about the FUE into scar procedure on January 29, and was told that the first available consultation via FaceTime wasn't until April 2nd, which I took. Dr. Diep explained the options for the scar, quoted me $2,500 to fill it in via FUE. I emailed Dr. Diep's office on April 29th to schedule a date for the procedure. After some back and forth, on May 13 at I received an email saying that July 19, August 8, or December 16 were available, and I should reply via email or call back to book one of those. I replied 38 minutes later to the email to say that I would take July 19. Monica from his office also called me around the same time I received their email, presumably to take down my credit card, but I was at lunch so missed the call. I called back 27 minutes later, and was told that Monica was on the phone but would call me back as soon as she was off. So, within one hour, I had been offered a date, accepted that date via email, and called his office to confirm and was told I would be called right back. I never got a call back, and the next day in the afternoon I got an email saying the date I had chosen was booked and I needed to pick a new one. I sent an email expressing frustration with the situation, and received a reply from Allison at his office that June 3rd was now available. June 3rd had never been mentioned as an option before. I replied to the email that if anything was available in July it would be slightly preferable, but if not then I would absolutely take June 3rd. I didn't hear back the rest of the day, and then followed up the next day to confirm I was set and see if they needed to get on the phone. The day after that, I got an email saying nothing more than "The next date is: October 3, 2019." I replied again to Allison to express frustration, but say that I would take October 3rd if that was all that's available. I sent this email on May 17th, and have still haven't gotten a reply. I called the office four days later, on 5/21, and asked to speak to Allison to confirm the October 3rd date. Allison told me that October 3rd was no longer available, and there was nothing available for the remainder of the year, and I could be put on a wait list in case someone canceled. When I said that this was the third time I had been given a date, and then told it was unavailable right after, she told me that I should have called to confirm. When I pointed out that I had called to confirm the July 19 date, and then never was called back by Monica, she didn't really have an answer. I also pointed out that in their emails that offer dates, it says "you can either email me or give me a call" to confirm. ***Update*** after I initially posted this, Dr. Diep's office got in touch with me and the situation was resolved and I was able to schedule a date for the scar revision procedure. I'm very appreciative of their quick response and their willingness to find time for me, and am satisfied with the outcome.
  13. Dr. Diep haters come out of the woodwork. His results is what does the talking. That tiny spot above his ear, I can guarantee no one even notices. Obviously, on this forum of trained eyes, it’s gonna be different, but in the real world, his results are what matters. Compare this result to the other failed result, there’s no comparison. These results are insanely good. Let the photos do the talking. Keep in mimd also, that the after photos are taken under harsher lighting as well! To negate the fact that Dr. Diep has hundreds if not thousands of results like this is pure nonsense. These results market themselves.
  14. Dr. Diep is very good. If money is no issue for you, then he is an excellent choice. for me, it was just out of my budget, and my hairloss was not bothering me enough that I was gonna spend $30k on it. so I chose another doc that had a solid reputation, but was much lower.
  15. So I’ve finally saved up a good amount of money to have my first hair transplant done 🥳 I’m 26 years old and I started noticing my hair loss at around 21 and it really became noticeable when I was 23. I believe I’m somewhere in between a Norwood 5 or 6. I haven’t used finasteride, rogaine, or propecia because of all the side effects one can possibly get from using them. Now I’m having a lot of trouble trying to find the right doctor. I want to go to turkey for the hair transplant because of the cost is so much cheaper than that of here in the USA. I’ve sent a email to Dr. Diep’s facility and I have a consultation with them in the second week of December. I got a quote from Hair of Istanbul and they said my surgery will be for 6000 usd and be done by doctor yavuz gunes. I tried looking him up online and couldn’t really find anything from him, but the facility has shown great results? Now outside of him I am in touch with Dr Cinik and waiting on hearing back from him with a price. His assistant was saying I would be needing 3500-4000 grafts. I was going to try Dr. Koray Erdogan but I’m not sure because of the reviews I’ve been reading about him on this forum. I feel he is a great doctor but too many people have been unsatisfied with his work and his success rate has been going down recently. I just feel as if I’ve seen people have more success with Dr. Cinik on this forum. If anyone can provide more insight on this or any other suggestions for doctors that would be greatly appreciated. I’m really hoping I can get this first hair transplant done for under 10000 usd when it’s all said and done. attached is pictures of my hair loss, with my hair grown out and shaved. I’ve also included the response from hair of Istanbul.
  16. I first started noticing my hair loss around 18 or 19 years of age. It became worse and worse and it got to the point where I felt embarrassed around others. Being in my early 20’s and seeing other kids my age with nice hair made me feel insecure about my hair. I knew something had to be done before I went totally bald. Your 20’s and even 30’s are your golden years and I believe nice hair has a lot to do with making you feel better about yourself. I did extensive research and finally stumbled across Dr. Diep. His reviews and results were amazing and I knew he did amazing, quality work. So I scheduled a consultation and he went over exactly what rethought was needed, about 2800 grafts via FUE. My appt was about 10 months later because his expertise is that in demand. I went in for surgery and last thing I remember was coming home and taking a nap. I did not feel anything and him and his nurses were extremely professional and comforting. They fed me a nice lunch as well. The following few days there was some discomfort but taking pain medication and resting help. The recovery was about 10-14 days for me. I took 2 weeks off of work and just relaxed and recovered. I noticed the hairs start to come in around month 3-4. It became more and more noticeable thick around the 5th-6th month and started blending it perfectly. I am coming up on my 7th month and I absolutely love the results. No one has even noticed I had a hair transplant. My hair looks natural and thick again. This is how it should look at 23 years old! And it is still going to get denser and denser over the next 6 months+. My confidence is way better now and I enjoy showing my hair off. I never wear a hat anymore to hide my receding and thinning hairline. I would not even hesitate to go see Dr. Diep and get your hair back again. You become a new man with a nice head of hair. The feeling is amazing I cannot thank Dr. Diep enough.
  17. Hi guys just wondering what your thoughts are on my current norwood class? I'm not really sure to be honest, I've just recently started to notice my hairloss, specifically the hairline obviously I will attach photos below. I just had my consultation with Dr. Diep and estimated me for 1500 grafts FUE but I asked him if I could do 2000 to get a really nicely dense hairline if need be so I guess i will ask him to go max up to 2000 then. Let me know your thoughts/advice thanks so much this community is the best.
  18. Every surgeon has negative reviews, Dr. Diep is no different, but most of his results are elite. Dr. Diep, was my surgeon, so it may sound biased but he really did change my life, so it's hard not to be a bit biased. I suggest going on the Advanced Search Page and start looking up real reviews from others, that way you can form your own opinion.
  19. Hey everyone! I've been on this site for a few years now looking around doing research and trying to find the best solution to my hair loss. 1. I am 28 years old and started to notice hair loss around 24-25 years old. 2. It started to recede which I thought looked good, until it started to thin out in the front and a little at the crown. 3. I started to do my research and decided to get on Minox. at age 26 and Fin at age 28. 4. Both worked good, but it was still bothering me so I decided to start looking into hair transplant, specifically FUE. 5. I went to Dr. Diep, Bosley, La Hair Clinic, Alvi Armani, Marc Dauer, Ziering, and many many more. 6. Dr. Diep in my opinion was rude and not professional (on his phone and tried to scoot me out the room ASAP) Bosley, was too run of the mill (Even though my dad did the strip method here 30 years ago and had amazing results and is in late 60's and looks amazing compared to his bald brother. Alvi Armani, although had good work was too expensive, kinda snobby, and would call me every other day offering me a deal, discount, open space, etc. which i thought was weird. So I finally went to LA Hair Clinic and I felt very comfortable, but still chickened out and went back home, after a few months I went in again and this time I took it serious. I asked a lot of questions, and he made me feel very very comfortable. He even drew what it would look like and gave me design options which I thought were amazing! A few weeks pass by and I book my appointment for July 2019. Came in this Monday 6:30 am and met with Flor and the team. Flor is an amazing employee there and she was so sweet, helpful, informative, and made every step of the process a breeze. 7:30...dun dun dun. Jacques comes in with a smile and says "Are you ready!" We started the procedure, buzz cut, map out, then the needles to numb out the back...I must say the needles HURT like a B^&$% but I kept saying it's worth it it's worth it...then he started to take out the grafts 2800 in specific. After this was done came the design phase which we went back and forth until we both came up with a perfect design. Hair buzzed, numbed again, which hurt like a MF'r, but all in the name of hair right! At this time after buzzing and punching the holes one by one, it was lunch time! 24 oz. Steak medium rare, fries, mushrooms, bread, water, tv, and they even called my fiance to come in and surprise me! It was 3:30 when we were done with lunch and came back to the room to start setting the grafts. 1. He did prp 2. his team started to put the gradts 1 by 1 by 1... 3. at around 630 we were done and i was beyond happy! 4. They gave me a goody bag with solutions, pills, directions etc. Came back the next day for a wash and they were again very friendly, informative, and always ready to help! I am 3 days post op and I must say other than the swelling i am beyond happy!! LA Hair Clinic and the team are A++++ in my books and I have already recomended them to many of my friends and family. I will update and post pictures as the time goes and I look forward in seeing my results. In the mean time I have a few questions to see if you all can help. 1. What are your thoughts on taking hair skin and nail pills 2. I have a little thinning in the crown and I will start minox again in a week or so but I am thinking of changing to Dutasteride from Fin since it is stronger but does not have the FDA approval for hair loss 3. Unfortunately I vape juul 3% and I have smoked it a few times since my surgery. What are your thoughts on vaping. I know it is bad to smoke and it can affect the hair growth and recovery. At the same time I feel like cold turkey would shock me and potentially affect it more. I would appreciate and feedback I will post pictures in the next few days! Cheers!
  20. Hello everyone, I have my scheduled Dr. Diep FUE appointment in 1 week. I Was told to stop taking biotin 7 days prior to procedure and 3 days after the surgery. Any idea why this is the case? However, I'm still allowed to take my Finasteride 1 mg as normal
  21. Based on post op images and hairline design, looks like Dr. Diep work to me.
  22. You've been given great names. I would take a look at Hasson and Wong, Dr. Gabel, Dr. Diep, Dr. Mohebi. That said, Dr. Shapiro is an excellent choice.
  23. Hi guys, excited and nervous to have my FUE procedure with Dr. Diep in about 3 weeks. I am estimated about 1500-2000 grafts just to lower my hairline. I just had a question if anyone has had any experience or knowledge about shaving the entire head prior to procedure versus shaving just the donor areas prior to procedure and leaving the hair on top long to hide any observation of a transplant being done. Is there any benefit to shaving the entire head prior to the procedure? For example would it be easier to clean and manage the recipient area post op for better results due to not having to maintain the native hair as much? Or is there a benefit that implanting into the recipient area with a fully shaved head? Or is it okay to just shave the donor areas and leave the top long like some people do?
  24. Your growth is insane for not even being 5 months. It looks fantastic already that’s insane 😱 happy for you man Dr. Diep did a great job.
