Advice for Hair Loss Sufferers Considering Hair Transplant Surgery

  1. I am a 24 year old African male, and I had my HT with Dr. Diep yesterday (6/10/2016). I began losing my hair at 19 but daily nizoral use slowed things down somewhat. I am about a Norwood 4/5 with generalized thinning on the top of my head and crown. I was originally scheduled for 2,500 grafts but I believe he was able to get about 800 more grafts due to the high quality of my donor hair and size of my head. Prior to the surgery he commented that in the past African hair can be very difficult to extract but mine was some of the best he had seen (luckily). I like to keep my hair at a #1 guard so I knew FUE would be the best option for me although Dr. Diep told me I would most likely need one more surgery to achieve optimal results. I arrived to the clinic at 6:30 am, went over some paper work then Dr. Diep drew my hairline. Around 7am we began the surgery. I was done around 7pm. The most painful part was the numbing shots prior to the surgery. My head is still pretty swollen now, but sleeping last night wasn't too bad. I will post photos once I take my headwrap off and receive the pre-op ones that Dr. Diep took. Cheers
  2. Im sure I’ll be a happy patient as well. But I wanted to be transparent about the process. It appears Dr. Diep is suffering from success. There seems to be an uptick in men getting hair transplants in the African American community (and in general). I can imagine his patient pool blowing up because he’s made a name for himself with our demographic. This has led to increased wait times and the price going up. I completely understand. He may need to beef up his office staff to keep the customer service up with the increased demand. just a thought. Anyway thanks for following this thread I’ll try to keep it updated along the way.
  3. Hey I'm looking for recommendations on an FUE doctor who has great results on Asian hair. I'm based in the US on the west coast and am willing to travel. I've gotten estimates of needing 1500-2000 grafts. I've already consulted with Dr. Diep and decided against him for a variety of reasons. Thanks in advance!
  4. So in November I had a consultation with Dr. Diep and his staff told me that they were booking over 13 months out, so the earliest I could get an appointment for was January 2021. I followed up with them recently asking if there was any way to squeeze me in anywhere, and they said they are still fully booked, and now their earliest availability is February 2021. While I was going back and forth with Dr. Diep's staff, I've also been in contact with Dr. Sanusi Umar in Los Angeles, and it turns out Dr. Umar has availability for February 2020, so in the next month and a half. I am very tempted to book with Dr. Umar, as I've seen nothing but good reviews on this forum, and he specializes in men with afro-textured hair like myself. I am just wondering if the fact that he is available so soon a red flag? I figured the top surgeons had a wait time of at least 6-7 months so am I just getting extremely lucky and am I overthinking this?
  5. Day of SurgeryI arrived to Los Gatos two days in advance to account for any travel delays. The night before I couldn't sleep at all. I was super excited. We went over the final paperwork and I opted for the additional $500 A-Cell treatment to help with recovery. He said it was the same thing as AmnioFill but most people chose ACell. I figured what's another $500 at this point?During SurgeryThey shaved my head down. The irony was this was the first time I saw my head bald and it didn't look that bad. lol. Dr. Diep came in and gave me some shots and some pills. The only painful part was the anesthesia to the head. I don't remember much of the first part of the surgery, only waking up to eat lunch. I do remember the techs asking where the A-Cell was because they couldn't find it.Also, I want to mention something important... the techs are the ones who insert the hair. I'm not sure if it was always like that but I seem to remember during my consultation that Diep said he would be the one inserting the grafts. He was the person that removed the hair from the donor area from what I remember. At one point I remember waking up to him asking the techs about count and it being low. He then proceeded to pretty aggressively take more hair from my left donor area. The entire surgery lasted around 12 hours. They wrapped my donor area up, put a bandage around the front, and put the medical cap on and I went back to the hotel. After SurgeryTop of head very swolen but I don't really feel any pain. But I'm liking what he's done with the hairline. Came in aiming for 1750 grafts but they were only able to pull 1500 or so. I asked Dr. Diep why and he said sometimes he's not able to get all the hairs he needs. He didn't expound any further. I'm not sure if it means my donor area is shot or whatever but I didn't want to keep pressing for info. Since I paid for 1750 grafts I will be getting a refund of some sort. So far I'm happy with the work and optimistic about the healing process.I took some meds and slept on the sofa chair at the hotel at a 45 degree angle.
  6. Hello everyone. I have been meaning to make this thread but have honestly been both busy and lazy. I have been scouring this website for a few months now and have been checking out a lot of peoples progress and completed work. I am glad this exists and want to share my current experience with the community. I am 34 years old and had a FUE done in Las Gatos, California (near San Francisco) by Dr. John Diep on May 23rd, 2018 to the frontal 1/3rd of my head. I began noticing my hair loss slowly when I was 27 years old. I started receding slowly and then the crown started going fast. I used minoxidil from 2011 to 2013 but I kept losing hair but not as quickly as before. I got tired of it and stopped. I started randomly searching on youtube about hairloss solutions and disguises and that eventually lead me to toppik. I started using toppik to cover my crown and i was okay with it. Then when my hairline started disappearing, I would start adding toppik there. It was good for some time and then the hairloss was too drastic. I now started noticing people looking at my hairline when they were talking to me and I felt like they knew something was up. It looked clumpy instead of like real hair strands. So then I began buzzing my hair with a 2 guard and developed a light sprinkle technique to give the illusion that I had a full head of hair with the buzz cut. I eventually got tired of it because like all of you know, it became a daily worry with all of environmental elements and with people wanting to run their hands on the buzz cut. I also got tired of always wearing hats when I didn't have the toppik on my head. I then started doing some serious research for the last 4 years before I actually pulled the trigger. I was choosing between Dr. Lindsey (he is 45 minutes from me in Virginia), Dr. Feriduni ( in Belgium), Dr. Koray Erdogan (Turkey) and Dr. Diep. I ended up choosing Dr. Diep mainly because of his amazing fue hairlines and for that fact that he is in the US. I am not going to type a write up about the day of the procedure because its exactly like what most people have described in their Diep threads. I will say that everything went well and I was pretty much knocked out for 10 hours minus lunch. I was initially told that he would be able to get 2,500 grafts but he ended up extracting 2,381. He was going to do some temple work but since he didn't get the 2,500 grafts, he ended up not doing it. I didn't know this until after the procedure but that makes sense since I was pretty sedated. I also opted to get the A-cell done. I am currently at 6 months and am a bit nervous with the progress (I know this the time where everyone tends to get anxious according to the forums). I know I am a slow grower on the top of my head because I was the same way when I had a full head of hair. There is definitely significant improvement of my hair line, its actually quite dramatic. My only issue is that I don't see a lot of density and I see a lot of big spaces where grafts initially seemed to be placed. I am not going to freak out or anything until after 1 year. I have read on this forum that some people saw a lot of new growth at around 9 months and on. I know the hair also begins thickens up then so I'll just wait and see and post monthly progress pictures. Side note, I know I am going to need 1 or 2 more HTs for full coverage on the rest of my head. I am not on any medication other than daily biotin. I wanted to get yalls opinion on Propecia and your honest blunt opinions about my progress so far. Thanks a lot and I am excited to be a contributor to this forum and of course experience my progress and results with yall. Top 3 pictures are pre op Top 4 pictures are 2 hours post op 1 day post op after a cleaning at his office 3 days post op and my face is swollen 9 days post op with scabbing 10 days post op 12 days post op. All the scabs have fallen. 6 months. Pictures taken this morning. I was buzzing my hair until the first week of October. This is my hair growth since then, about 6 weeks. I am not cutting my hair until the year mark. Hair at 18 Hair at 22 Hair at 28. You can see the front receding.
  7. I am considering Dr. Diep as my surgeon. He seems to be well liked on here and I live in California and so he is a logical choice. Just curious about some of your experiences with him? Thanks.
  8. Hi everyone, Im making this thread because there might be alot of guys out there in my situation, I was a diffuse norwood 6 thinner with retrograde alopecia, before deciding to do a hair trasnpant I often searched hair loss forums, members would constantly dissuade individuals from receiving hair restoration because of extensive hairloss. At 29 years old I decided to do it, I had my first procedure with Dr. Behnam in Santa Monica I had 1,800 grafts put in my midscalp in a diffuse pattern, I got great results well in my opinion, I then just recently decided to have 2,120 grafts implanted to my hairline by Dr. Diep in Los Gatos, im one week post op, but I just wanted to address some apprehensions. When deciding to have hair restoration you need to first stabilize hairloss, ive been on minoxidil and ketocanozole shampoo for over 4 years, no hair regrowth but my hairloss hasn't gotten much worse, I tried Finasteride but couldn't handle the sides, but I encourage everyone to at least try it. Secondly, what is your goal realistically, it should be always be natural, address the hairline, midscalp and lateral humps first and foremost, the crown must be something you're willing to leave thin or completely bald. Thirdly, you must be willing to step outside the box should worst case scenario come in to play, what I mean by this is that you must be willing to invest your time and money if the hair transplant should not come to fruition, for example I have average to below average donor density due to my retrograde alopecia, my hair characteristics are fairly good though, so I plan to use as much of my donor as possible with the possibility of going over 50% donor density. My back up plan is body hair transplant (BHT) to the donor area to make up for the donor depletion, luckily I have alot of body hair I could probably use over 30,000 follicular units just on body hair alone. I also wear my hair short on the sides so the change in hair characteristics from body hair to scalp wont be too apparent in the donor area. All things considered, MONEY, what I plan on doing will cost me the price of a brand new Mercedez Benz, are you in a position to afford this? Is it worth it to you? I truly dislike when people automatically write off Norwood 6/7 as hopeless, there is still hope if you have managed your hair loss and have realistic expectations, with body hair transplantion you're not solely reliant on hair from your scalp anymore. So with out further ive attached some pics of my first procedure before and after exactly 14 months post op, picture taken same place same lighting with Crew hair wax (not a concealer just hair product). The other pictures attached are my recent hair transplant sides and donor area. Its been exactly 8 days since I had the procedure done, both procedure were done via FUE.
  9. I was able to research a lot of Dr. Diep’s results online and through videos which really helped my confidence before going into this procedure. My situation was a little unique as I was working in Tokyo, Japan. However that was not a problem for the MHTA staff and Dr. Diep to schedule a skype consultation and talk to me about results and the entire process. When I arrived the staff was very polite and I was able to sit down with Dr. Diep and he confirmed the style I wanted and we created an awesome hairline. One thing I read on other reviews was Dr. Diep’s communication after the procedure is not the best and that worried me a bit. However I have had absolutely no problem communicating with Dr. Diep or the MHTA staff after the procedure. In fact I fell one day about a month after my procedure and I was worried about my results, Dr. Diep got on skype with me the very NEXT day and assured me everything was going to be alright with my new hair. Overall Dr. Diep is an awesome hair transplant surgeon and I highly recommend him to everybody. The results he was able to give me are through the roof and all my friends and family are in shock on what I look like now! I was balding at 19 years old and now I actually have an awesome hairline again and I don’t have to wear a hat everywhere! Dr. Diep truly cares about his patients results and takes great pride in his work. If you are looking to change your life and confidence please choose Dr. Diep!

  11. had my HT yesterday with Dr. Diep, and the experience overall was amazing. I will use this thread to post updates for the next year. I am a pretty big guy, 6'3, 190lbs, and can say I have a larger face. I was originally scheduled for 2,250 grafts, but Dr. Diep ended up doing 2,781 total grafts. The majority of the additional grafts were done free of charge. Thank you Dr. Diep! I also received the A-cell injections. He also told me that my grafts in general were very good. The surgery overall took about 11.5 hrs, including a 30 min lunch break. Overall it wasn't very painful, but the worst part was when they were implanting the hair, just became restless and took a good 4-5 hrs so I would say that was the most difficult part. Don't have too much pain in the donor area or recipient area, but my forehead is swollen right now but I expect that to subside within the coming weeks. Here is a breakdown of the hairs, and some high resolution pics. And as you can see, he also reinforced my existing hair quite a bit for future hair loss. 1's - 742 grafts 2's - 1,541 grafts 3's - 379 grafts 4's - 119 grafts FYI, I also had a few 5 hair grafts. The Dr. said that's not something they see too often.
  12. When I saw Dr. Diep he inspected my hairline visually for a few seconds and then quoted me the # of grafts I'd need. I asked a few more questions and then he moved on to pricing. There wasn't any measurements of donor density taken or review of old pictures. But I have no hair-loss on the back or sides of my head, so maybe he thought it was obviously dense enough?
  13. I had in-person consultations with Diep and Canales and online consultation with Umar, with extensive back-and-forth conversation with both Dr. Umar directly and his staff. I know many think an in-person is preferable, but the in-person consultations I've had so far were both very quick, with the doctors taking a 2-second look at my head and then coming to a conclusion for what I need, and I don't think there is any new information that I could gain that I haven't already talked to Dr. Umar and his staff about, which makes an extra trip to LA seem unnecessary to me.
  14. I don't think it matters...surgeons can have cancellations and can fit you into their schedule. I've seen Coalition member surgeons have a waiting list that is 4 months long; while others have a 1-year long waiting list. That said, both Dr. Umar and Dr. Diep are highly recommended on here and I've only seen positive reviews for both surgeons. Have you had an in-person consultation?
  15. Wait times have nothing to do with skill or talent of a surgeon, there’s a surgeon that supposedly has a 7 year wait list. In my opinion, that’s just hype. That said, I went to Dr. Diep myself and had a stellar result. I recommended him to my friend who’s at 5 months and also had a killer result. He waited 9 months.
  16. So I've had consultations with 3 different surgeons (Diep, Umar and Canales) and they've all said similar things about what I'd need for surgery (all 3 recommended roughly 2500 grafts FUE) so I don't think anyone is lying to me in terms of treatment. I've been going through a lot of Dr. Umar's past results, on this forum, yelp and his site/youtube channel and they all seem positive. I've looked up his license records to see if he has any malpractice claims or any other red-flags on his record and I don't see any there. I have gotten written confirmation from his staff that Dr. Umar himself extracts the grafts and makes the slits in the recipient sites himself. Dr. Umar is also listed as one of the main recommended surgeons on this forum for the state of California, and various users have posted their result pictures and have been pretty pleased with the results. So everything seems to be above board to me, which is why the quick availability seems odd. For anyone else here who has had work with Dr. Umar, how long did you have to wait?
  17. I underwent a FUT procedure under Dr. John Diep at MHTA clinic in March 2019. Dr. Diep aesthetically created suitable hairline, professionally and carefully completed the FUT procedure within the scheduled hours. The FUT incision healed on time and the grafted hair follicles grew the way they suppose to be. The whole team had been professional and maintained a client-friendly environment during the consultation, before, during and after the procedure. I would surely recommend him for those who seek for a medical professional with great aesthetical sense and superior transplantation skills. (See the pre and post-procedure pics) .
  18. You got some good names, I don't know much about Dr. Nader, but Dr. Rahal and Dr. Diep are great surgeons. The best advice I could give you is spend some time on our surgeon/reviews section, look at real patient reviews, private message patients and gain a real feel of what surgeon is actually doing good work.
  19. Thanks for your review, but I would like to see some selfie type pictures or even how you look outside. I went to Dr. Diep, and he's changed my life, I even recommended him to my friend and his results look amazing as well.
  20. @John Doe Hi John Doe, really sorry to say this but that gap will 100% NOT have hair grow in, and the gap situation can only be solved by a 2nd touch up procedure. I went through something very similar myself, except my gap was even larger and more apparent. For the first 6 months after my HT, I convinced myself that this gap was shock loss, it will grow back, etc. But the thing is, as you already know, if there was no hair there to begin with, then there is no hair to grow..... It was incredibly painful for me to accept the reality of the situation, that I had had a botched transplant, and having to go through the stress and drama of a 2nd surgery. I was INCREDIBLY disappointed in the doctor who did my procedure. Why didnt she just put more grafts in? WTF who would have thought that was ok? My doctor is essentially an unknown/amateur in Denver, Colorado, so I am surprised that this happened to you at a more well-known clinic with a well-known doctor. Good news is you have Dr. Rahal by the b*lls now. He said he would do the touch up for free. If you don't want this clinic going near your hair a 2nd time (who says they wont screw up the touch up procedure?) - find a HT doctor closer to you who you trust to do the repair, get a quote, then DEMAND to the Rahal clinic they pay for the touch up
  21. FUT or FUE, that is an important question. I think with each of those options you will head to different doctors. For FUT: In US I would go for Konior, I think he is obviously elite. Canada I think Wong is successful with that more than Dr.Hasson. Europe I do really really like Hattingen, their results with FUT is wow and they barely go further than 6K in total, only one bad FUT result I've seen from them. couple of dozen brilliant ones at least. FUE: I think there are some good surgeons in Turkey like Cinik, there is also another guy but I don't remember his name, but was known to be very conservative with number of grafts he do. Rarely mega sessions. Like Diep too. Belgium has great surgeons like Devroye & Bisanga Don't like Hattingen or H&W as FUE surgeons, they are good but they aren't as standout as they are in FUT But I agree with @JayLDD, FUT is the best way for what you want.
  22. Hi All – Quick introduction: I'm a 45yr old Asian Indian NW6 residing in California with stable hair loss and do not take any hair loss drugs. I am considering FUE for 4-4.5k grafts on my first procedure with intention to get a natural front hairline with a little density tapering to the mid while sacrificing the crown somewhat. My original hairline has always been quite high (see pics) with hair combed back. I’m ok with being thin on the back for now as I’ve accepted I'll require at least one additional procedure. Perhaps SMP can help the crown somewhat. Hopefully the first procedure will allow me freedom to decide on another while preserving the donor area. I'm considering a procedure early next year and am reaching out for further guidance from this great community. Upon considering cost and doctors, with further research, I realize my original desire to remain within North America and under a certain budget is shortsighted. I’m interested in ethical doctors who perform majority of the procedure themselves and feel that is reasonable for the price point. Remaining in California would make logistics quite a bit easier as I could drive vs. flying. I’m not sure why some of the superstar doctors in LA area aren’t discussed more here. Some folks mentioned Europe doctors are blockbuster with a lower price point than NA so I am open to that too with an early next year time frame. My shortlist of doctors include: Hassan & Wong – they have a great reputation but I have found limited patient results to make a better decision. Their work does appear to be excellent. Dr. Pak – great reviews on all forums with plenty of results. Dr. Vories – I like his direct and no-nonsense approach and use of an implanter pen. His work seems consistent. Dr. Ferudini – great reviews all around with plenty of results. Dr. Konior – also has a great reputation but someone mentioned his costs are around $12 graft which may be out of my budget. I’ll confirm. Dr. Diep – while a local friend went to him with good results, for some reason his work always appeared good with the exception of the donor area. That along with a recent experience posted here somewhat confirms my gut feelings. I'll be doing more research. I'm definitely open to other doctors as my research is limited. Thank you to all the forum members for creating such a wonderful environment for everyone to share. I appreciate any feedback and hope to share my experiences. Cheers!
  23. I think we need to remember guys that pictures online will never replace in-person consultations. In fact, I would warrant to say that @nick1111 had a weaker looking donor area, and he had his surgery from esteemed surgeon Dr. Konior, and now his results look really good. Now, it seems that this patient saw Diep in person, and the others he sent in pictures, that is an important factor to consider. Furthermore, I don't think negative statements about tech-driven clinics in Turkey are invalid. I think this is a major concern in the industry, so much so that the ISHRS has started a campaign called "fighttheFIGHT" @Biceps if you are serious about having a hair transplant, you need to set up in-person consultations with several surgeons. Photos can be deceiving I can submit a photo right now and get declined from virtually all surgeons, even though I saw Dr. Konior, Mohebi, Gabel and they all said I still have at least 1,000 grafts left in the tank. Depending on the angle, and lighting you will expose more scalp, especially if you have a short haircut. The photo I took now was taken blurry, facing bright lights, and the light was reflecting off of my skin making my hair appear super thin and see through. This will happen with virtually any person with short hair. For further illustration, check out the child, see where the light is shining the brightest, you can see through his scalp, now we know it's obvious he isn't balding, but if he were a grown man submitting photos, one would assume that he was developing a bald spot. Now take a look at the video I shot in normal lighting my hair looks normal.
  24. Sorry to hear that - but you've been given great advise by H&W and Konior + other doctors who have nothing to gain, in fact have something to lose, by telling you the truth...........you were very prudent to double/triple check with top docs. I would proceed with trying perhaps other solutions outside the Big 3 but I'm afraid they sit outside the Big 3 for a reason because their efficacy is questionable - at a certain point i think it wise to just accept the situation. You'll find freedom in that. Finally I would say this the frustration/disappointment you have right now would pale in comparison to the depression/ issues you would have had as a result of an unethical failed procedure. Imagine if you had proceeded with Dr.Diep advise who was happy to put you in the chair when Turkish clinics + HW + Konior had said NO. @Melvin-Moderator i take your point on Diep......but this board should also be ready to identify when a once top tier surgeons standard/practices quite clearly begin to slip.......human nature is such that as one gets rich and comfortable, as I'm sure Diep has, one's hunger, focus & professionalism can slip. Ironically it can make some even more greedy and more inclined to 'reach' for that extra dollar. This thread is one example of Diep "slipping" and being will to operate on this guy, taking doner hair from one side of the head in an FUE procedure making a mockery of doner management best practice is another.
  25. This is total BS, @FUEblonde1985 @baldlivesmatter @bondi @m0dthispny @JBlonde @HairlessUser @E39 not to mention me. His resume speaks for itself. I recommended him to one of my best friends, and he is currently 4.5 months and is another homerun. There are only a handful of surgeons with as many stellar results on YouTube and the forum and he is one of them. You may not like Dr. Diep, and that is fine, but don't make these nonsense claims.
