Advice for Hair Loss Sufferers Considering Hair Transplant Surgery

  1. Your donor already looks so much better. People always give Dr. Diep the blues when it comes to his donor management but at the end his patients never seem to notice and the thread ends up moving forward as if nothing happened. I think you’re good, man. When that hairline comes in you’re going to be sitting pretty. Happy growing and please keep us updated!
  2. Manual FUE hair transplant surgery of 2,540 hair grafts result on Norwood 3/4 hair loss pattern mostly frontal balding by Dr. Diep. Grafts Count Breakdown of 2,540 hair roots: One hair roots = 643 grafts Two hair roots = 1,308 grafts Three hair roots = 476 grafts Four hair roots = 113 grafts Total hair roots = 2,540 grafts To view this client in detail, please click on the following Youtube link
  3. Not sure why this post was reported, but some good advice. Dr. Diep was my personal, and while I have dark hair and it’s more on the thicker side. I know a few blonde guys who had excellent results @JBlonde @E39 @SWdan and even @FUEblonde1985 even though he was skeptical, I thought it his hair looked amazing. I’d suggest reaching out to them for their unbiased opinions.
  4. I looked at a few videos and seems he did a great job with Norwood 5-6's with great coverage. Any feedback on him?
  5. They have the most experience, but definitely consult with other top docs like Dr. Bisanga, Hasson and Wong, Dr. Diep was my personal doctor, and my hair was similar to yours.
  6. @Melvin-Moderator that’s good to know. I think it’s possible to simultaneously hold that he is a great surgeon but also that he takes some shortcuts compared to others who charge $10/graft. And that’s my point — compared to the whole population of surgeons, he is likely top tier. But compared to the others who charge top dollar, he’s a bit of an outlier in terms of his approach. Regarding the straight lines: there have been two people on this thread who have commented on how the grafts are placed in straight lines. One of whom had surgery with Dr. Diep prior and called this out as an issue. So yeah: no proof yet that it gives sub-par results, but another thing to note I suppose.
  7. In the entire body of work, I don't think I would consider him lower quality. I don't see any proof of this straight patterns. Maybe he will share a photo of what he's talking about, but I haven't seen any issues with the overall outcome. Now, in terms of larger punches and extracting from one side of the donor, the information is out there, if you want a surgeon who uses a small punch, then definitely choose a different surgeon, however, I haven't seen many doctors who consistently put out high quality results every week, or the same number of patient reviews. In the end, it's all about results. I have seen dozens of surgeons work, and hundreds of real patient reviews, and I can safely say that Dr. Diep, is at the very top, so much that I have personally referred one of my best friends to him. He is now about 9 months and his results are stellar.
  8. Yeah @Noodles123 if you could post a current-day photo illustrating the see-through nature, that would be awesome. @Melvin-Moderator I’m starting to see a couple trends pop up around the way Dr. Diep approaches his Hair Transplants. Mainly: Larger punch size than other surgeons in his $$$ price range ($10/graft) Uneven FUE extraction from the donor, increasing the risk of over-harvesting for smaller transplants (<1500 grafts) Unnaturally straight rows for the implanted grafts, which you can see from my photos earlier in the thread (though whether this is a bad thing is definitely up for discussion) At the same time, he delivers some stellar results on the site and is generally seen as a “safe” bet due to the sheer number of unbiased write-ups available online. I understand that each doctor has their own techniques, and each technique has its own pros and cons. Larger punch size = higher rate of graft survival. Uneven FUE extraction = more untouched donor down the line. Unnaturally straight rows = something, but I’m not sure what. Ultimately we all consider a bunch of factors, make a decision, then hope for the best. And I am hopeful that in both my and Dadda’s cases, we have awesome results. But at some point, I think it’s worth figuring out whether there’s a pattern here. One possible set of explanations: Larger punch size is easier than smaller punch size, but a more dedicated surgeon could make lower punch size work, maximizing graft survival and minimizing impact on the donor Localized FUE extraction is easier to do than extraction in an even pattern across the donor area. You only have to shave one area, and you go line by line until you have enough grafts. Unnaturally straight rows are easier to implant than more staggered edges Again, this is just one possible explanation, and I’m not a doctor. But an easy story to tell here is that Dr. Diep just has a slightly lower quality bar than other top surgeons, while still managing to produce home-run results because of his expertise in other areas (hairline design, graft survival rate, etc). At the end of the day, he has a formula, it produces good results, and his waiting list is 6 months long. So from his perspective, why should he mess with the formula?
  9. Several years ago I had a surgery performed by Dr. Diep. Still very satisfied with the results. It's not easy selecting a surgeon for any type of surgery but it's especially hard in the case of hair restoration since the web is full of information and often mis-information. I definitely recommend Dr. Diep, especially if you chose to go the FUE/FUT route.
  10. I had a 1300 graft FUE with Dr. Diep back in February and he harvested in a similar manner. It wasn’t a one-off decision because he was running late in @Dadda’s case. I do think that the large punch size and uneven donor harvesting are not ideal. My decision to go with Dr. Diep was mainly based on the results he is able to achieve in the transplanted area. My preference would be for him to evolve his technique or better articulate why he is doing it so differently from other doctors.
  11. Dr. Diep does this to preserve donor for future surgeries, and reduce the scarring. FUE intrinsically reduces the overall density and he believes it’s best to leave a portion of the scalp virgin, for future surgeries.
  12. I went to a surgeon who wasn't very good, he pretty much gave me a hairline that started in my midscalp. The results didn't look good, and left a lot to be desired. The next procedure with Dr. Diep, is when I saw an enormous change in my appearance. I did my crown in 2016, but I also reinforced the midscalp. I had about 600-700 grafts in the crown and that was also Diep. The crown is bare, and I use concealer to make it look good, for full transparency here is what my crown looks like without concealer, and obviously the density is an illusion. You can see the true density when I part it down the middle. I want to give you realistic expectations. If you think hair transplants are gonna solve all your problems they won't.
  13. I thought I'd post my 24 month picture, and last one, since I'm sure there won't be any more changes. Thanks one more time to Dr. Diep and his staff for helping me make this journey.
  14. Scar looks real good. Hey, I wonder if Dr. Diep has changed the way he does things. Two years ago, Jenny brought me in a small cup with 7 or 8 pills in it. Within 30 minutes I was out. I barely remember being woke up for lunch then more pills. Awake the last hour or so as they were finishing up. I had zero pain. (FUT) Since I had to fly from San Jose to NM, I wore a very loose fitting ball cap during the trip. Not too much discomfort the next few days...maybe I got lucky, but it took six months for the numbness to subside. I wish I had been close enough to go to his office for the suture removal. I think your HT is going to turn out great.
  15. I know the first patient has done by DR.Diep . Do you know who did the second Patient ( Bald guy ) , Was that by DR.Diep as well ? Or is that by another surgeon ?
  16. Very Good and thoughtful answer , I am doing E-Commerce and I can write a blog about how the review can fool you , Especially in some certain industry , No question that we all got fool by review before , But as long as you learn more and deeply about how internet industry work , Then you will realize what exactly you deal with it ( Not to mention we have less than two decades of internet history ) Back to the point , Dr.Couto , We are talking about a doctor who doesn't even have website , Doesn't have any REPRESENTATIVE here to represent him..But by just looking at his videos , I never seen any doctor who can even be close to him . I read on this forum some people even question his work , Well here is my answer , You can even deny when its dark and night and tell me you are seeing light of sunshine ! You can always put question for everything in the world no matter it is a legit question or not. But what I see is he is doing Great Job and doing a perfect work because of couple different reason : 1- He is providing high quality video , Not even pictures . 2- He is using comb all through the hair of patient and I can't even see any bald spot 3- His hairline is very nicely design 4-He doesn't do many high graft and put all in front like some turkey doctors do . There are many other reasons I can add to this post but I don't want to make it long. I agree that dr.diep is one of the top surgeons in US , But I saw some work from him that has large punch and not a perfect result that can beat Dr.Couto.
  17. Update of my donor and other angles. I took these photos for my Dr. rahal consultation I just signed up for. Also I attached a picture of a hairline by Dr. Diep at the bottom. Incredible.
  18. Hi everyone, Here is my timeline of my FUE hair transplant I had with Dr. Diep on 3/29/18. I had 1633 grafts placed to lower my hairline and fill in some recession on my temples. I also did the Acell treatment. Here are some pics before, 3 days Post OP, and Pre OP
  19. This is a fascinating thread for me as someone who recently got surgery with Dr. Diep. The points being made about the angle of the hair are definitely valid, especially when the density isn’t really there behind the grafts to push the hair down naturally. @Mycroft I’m curious how the angle of the hairs could be corrected through surgery. That doesn’t seem possible to me, but then again I’m not a doctor.
  20. Take a look at Hassons patients @Arminius @SprayPaint @Legend007 @flyinghotnow @Aftermath @Macbernal @thebossman @FinallyHT Take a look at Dr. Diep's @JBlonde @m0dthispny @baldlivesmatter @Skyb @shookwon33 @bondi @hairvanity @jkm3 Now I just did a brief search, but both of these surgeons have over a dozen results on here, you need to do your own research man. Honestly, it doesn't really matter what people tell you, it's right here for you to judge yourself. No one is gonna do your research for you, although I just kinda did lol. But this is only a small portion. I have no bias, I think both of these surgeons are at the top of their game, and both have the results to back it up.
  21. I just responded to the thread, he looks like he's suffering from shock loss. Also, 1,800 grafts is a small number. I highly doubt he has been 'overharvested' by such a low number of grafts. Dr. Diep, for all the hate he gets, he's a good guy and he really does care about his patients, as does Dr. Hasson. All i'm gonna say is go on this forum and search both doctors, you will see dozens of results posted by real patients. Speak to other patients via PM, and consult with both via Skype or in person if possible.
  22. I doubt any doctor would offer a refund for a case like this as your hair largely looks okay. I do see what you mean about the temple though, and I do think that a number of doctors would be willing to do a small touch-up job in that area for no additional charge. Whether Dr. Diep is willing to do so would be a question only he can answer.
  23. I have the same exact problem as you after a Dr Diep hairline restoration. Overall the transplant looks pretty good. But it’s the little nuances that bother me. The hair that was implanted was definitely two perpendicular to the scalp. Where my natural hair meets the transplanted hair it is very obvious that the transplanted hair sticks straight up and the natural hair wants to lay forward. I believe this is to Dr. Diep not using a very acute angle with his implantation. If you look at some other surgeon's work they implant at a flatter more acute (closer to the skin) angle. This is how natural hair grows and actually helps with camoflouging. It's a win win for the surgeon to implant the follicles flatter to the scalp. I believe this takes more technical skill and is more tedious and that's why it is not done all the time. Temple point restoration has to be implanted extremely close to the skin which is why very few surgeons are actually successful or willing to do them. I too have temple transition grafts that didn't grow. One side is much thinner then the other. It seems like all the rest of the transplanted hair had good yield except where he transitioned to the temple area.
  24. Have you addressed any of your concerns with Dr. Diep, do you mind sharing pictures of your hair dry, and of the donor area. I don’t really see any issues in the flow of the hair. Thanks for keeping us updated.
  25. Here is my last update and final thoughts (I'm on a different username because I forgot my password and I am too inpatient to wait for account unlock) I overall have mixed feelings about my final result. I think the hair is in general an improvement, but I think that there are some issues, some of which have nothing to do with Diep, others I believe are a result of the procedure execution. 1. The implanted hair texture/density doesn't flow with the natural hair. This is probably out of hands of the doctor, but something that everyone should realize will likely happen unless you are just fortunate to have your existing hair match well with the donor. The hair behind my implanted hair doesn't flow or style very well with the implanted hair. The implanted hair is clearly thicker, because the hair behind it is thinning. My styling routine mostly fixes this, but it is an issue that I have to deal with each day - the hairstyle just doesn't flow naturally like you would expect. 2. Building on point 1 above, which I believe is directly as a result of Diep's work - the angle of the implanted hair does not flow well with the natural hair. Its obviously not implanted standing straight up, but the natural hair flows forward and down, where the implanted hair constantly wants to angle upwards and out. This is especially apparent in the area where the implanted hairline at the temples meets the natural temple points - looking closely at mine the flow is absolutely not natural at all, and its a very obvious indicator where the transplanted hair begins. Again this makes it difficult to style in a natural way. It seems like the angle of the hair is best suited for combing the hair back, which I see a lot of guys do after implants. Unfortunately that style doesn't work for my head or hair, making every style a difficult cross between hair that wants to flow up and back, and hair that I am trying to style down and across. I don't know if this is a limitation of current techniques, or the Dr. didn't utilize fine single grafts to place in this area when they were available. 3. This also adds to 1 and 2, although this isn't the Dr. fault (although I think he could have advised me better on this) - part of the fault for the hair styling issues is that I didn't have much hair implanted in the areas where I already had hair. If I could do it again, it probably would have achieved a better result to just shave the crown and then have some of the grafts implanted further back in the hairline, so that there was a better mix of native and implanted hair. Instead, there are my triangle tufts of implanted hair, and then the natural, thinner, weaker hair right behind it. I expect this will continue to become more of an issue when the hair continues to recede (which it has a small amount since the procedure). 4. There is a small area in my right temple where very few grafts took. I don't know why this happened, but it is annoying thing to look at and work around every day. You can see this in the pictures below. I will add that the picture looks probably worse since you are also seeing continued advancement of the hair thinning, but the implanted area is missing many grafts that should have been placed. 5. There is a lot of stuff said on this forum about Diep's donor areas. I can say that I haven't had any concerns about mine, but I also think that I can't actually know if my donor is in bad shape until I get a second procedure down the road. I think I will probably seek a different doctor just as a precaution since I anticipate needing 2-3 more procedures later in life, and the donor area just looked "really" bad right after surgery compared to other reputable doctors. I'm not sure why it has to be this way when other docs are getting just as good results without leaving a huge mess. Again please keep in mind these photos are putting the hair/transplant in the worst light. My hair looks pretty good when dry/styled (see other progress pics above, not much has changed since my last update) - it's really just the finer details that are bothering me. Going into the procedure, I was hoping that after this, styling my hair in the way I want would be easy/no effort because it would just be in all the right places. Unfortunately that part hasn't really changed much - instead of dealing with a receding hairline, I am dealing with hair that doesn't naturally flow together.
