Advice for Hair Loss Sufferers Considering Hair Transplant Surgery

  1. I contacted Dr. Damkerng Pathomvanich at Bumrungrad Hospital. They wanted $50 for the online consultation. When I told them no, they asked that I just send some pictures, which I did. I was then quoted 250 baht per graft for 2500. That's just about the same price as Dr. Diep here in the Silicon Valley, which is only 20 min drive for me. Dr. Damkerng price is outrageous, and ridiculous. Price is really not a factor as much as quality for me. But I'm not keen on getting scammed either.
  2. Good morning fellas. I am asking for some friendly unbiased opinions on 3 surgeons. Hasson and Wong, Dr. Blake bloxham, and Dr Diep. I’ve had consults with all 3 and they all seem like they would be good options. I am progressing into a nw 6 so i have opted for FUT, then fue afterwards. Just so i can utilize more lifetime grafts. What are your guys opinions on their results? Who would you recommend? Price and location mean nothing. This is strictly about getting it done right the first time. Thanks guys
  3. H&W - Top tier surgeons. From what I've seen of their results, they are extremely consistent, and use grafts in an intelligent way to maximize coverage. Hairlines look great. They seem to be pushing more for FUE lately (they suggested FUE to me in my online consultation), but they are obviously one of the best at FUT Dr. Bloxham - His video documentation of results is the best, bar none. I highly suggest checking his Youtube channel to see what he's capable of. He specializes in FUT so if that's the procedure you want, you're in good hands. Very talented and capable of good work but in some of his cases I think his hairlines come out a little too unbroken and artificial. His scars are practically invisible. Dr. Diep - I think he has a great sense of aesthetics and hairline design. If your concern was getting temples/hairline he is superb. I don't think he is as good as H&W at optimizing graft usage to create density in the midscalp/crown. I've seen dubious harvesting for FUE from him, but if you're going through with FUT this is something you can overlook anyway.
  4. @Melvin-Moderator you were right man! Dr. Diep would love for me to come in for the 1 year transformation video. However, due to our current pandemic its kind of tough! Lol!
  5. Hi everyone, I wanted to consult with you all regarding my hair transplant journey. I live in Miami, Florida and traveled to Chicago where I had an FUE surgery with Dr. Sahar Nadimi one year ago and had 1500 grafts put in. At the time, I already felt I had great hair but wanted to restore my hairline which was thinning in the corners. While I must say, the experience with Nadimi's office was 100% exceptional and my donor area did not even look like I had surgery within a week, I mean seriously some of the best donor work I have ever seen. A year later and what i'm facing is that I just don't like the hairline she designed for me, it does not suit my face, does not replicate my natural hairline and doesn't suit my features. I have a long, narrow face and my hairline is now much wider looking it is straight through the center and naturally, there was a dip in the center and less open in the corners. I would never have anticipated a second procedure, but here we are. I consulted with Nadimi and again and while I like her, she is a bit combative and not in line with what my aspirations are she is also apprehensive about doing any work behind the leading edge of the hairline. Thus, i've decided to consult other doctors- including Rahal, Vories, Diep, Hasson and Wong, Bisanga, Cuoto and Bruno Ferreira. I spoke with Vories and was not thoroughly impressed. I spoke with Diep and really liked him, good guy and hit it right on the head- your hairline does not match your face and is the wrong design- he said this without me even saying a word about it which kind of brought me on board with him right way. I know one of your moderators had a surgery with him but I do have to say while he is my first choice, I am highly concerned with his donor sites, and, I have seen some results that were ultimately bad in the long run- bald spots- you've seen these results as well. I do prefer his hairlines and work to Hasson and Wong. I really wanted to work with Diep but ultimately, I just don't see if this is worth the risk. Hair Transplants are about results at the end of the day but some of his post donor sites are unsettling and I have seen results where there are definitely patchy spots in the long run in the donor area, not that this happens with everyone but I just cannot justify the risk. One thing I really appreciated about Nadimi was how amazing my donor site looked after surgery and how it looks now. Moving on, I am now focusing on Dr. Rahal and Hassan. My personal opinions are as follows, I prefer Rahal's hairline work, I think that Hassan produces more V shaped hairlines which would not be a natural look for me. That being said, I am actually leaning toward Hassan just for the fact that I find him to be the most consistent, I really have not seen poor reviews from him, donor issues or dissatisfied clients. If I could count on Rahal, I would prefer to go there but I have heard of recent dissatisfactory reviews and I have also heard he spends very little time in the operating room- the latter less important to me because it's all about results at the end of the day. But am I going to get a bad result from Rahal? While I like his hairline and work better I just see there being more risk with him than Hassan. I have not been able to find recent reviews regarding Rahal and have actually had trouble finding a lot of photos from his post ops. Also not important to me but not impressed with his reps, annoying. It's crazy to me that in my gut i'm leaning toward Hassan while I am not blown away by his hairline results, there is so much hype around them too. I consulted with Konior and I think he's really the best, he felt that Nadimi produced excellent results and politely suggested I work with her again. I however did not consider Konior due to waiting list and cost (18K for 1500 grafts) other than this price, I am mostly pretty price flexible and wouldn't deem this a top criteria. I am straying from Nadimi for facts stated above and also because her primary focus is not Hair transplants, and I believe it's best to work with someone with a single focus. Will also point out that what is great about Nadimi is that you are getting her and Koniors staff- she's in the room the whole time. Lastly, I am considering Bisanga, Ferreira Cuoto- I frankly am almost at the point of removing Bisanga from my list because it feels crazy to fly from Miami to Brussels for a hair transplant when there are great doctors closer. I also am not too thrilled about the thought of being in a foreign country when healing after a procedure and then flying back a prolonged distance, based off of my experience in my first FUE, it's nice to be comfortable after, abroad could be stressful. I am in process of consulting with Ferreira but I don't' think he has the experience of other surgeons I am considering. I would travel to Cuoto because I think his results are just absolutely insane- yes, they are youtube videos and we have not seen unbiased forum posts but none the less- but none the less best results in my opinion. Trouble with Cuoto is long waiting list of almost two years. Lastly and very important, it is not ideal that you cannot consult with some of these doctors directly- Hassan and Rahal for example only consult through reps, pointless in my opinion because I am now pretty well versed in HT and would like to speak to a DR- this makes the decision increasingly difficult. I think you really have to take all factors into account which makes this challenging, while I was most impressed with some of Dieps results my opinion is he carries the most risk, my gut wants to take a chance on Rahal but the sound, safe and wise part of me tells me my best bet is with Hassan. I am basically putting this out there for any help and experience that might lead me to a decision, ready to move on from this! Thank you!!
  6. As someone who did surgery with Dr. Diep, I would probably recommend you look elsewhere for touch up work. He has a knack for drawing good hairlines, but his execution isn’t perfect.
  7. Hair transplant restoration surgery result of 5,308 Hair grafts from the frontal to the crown area on advanced Norwood 4/5 hair loss pattern during one year follow up by Dr. Diep. 5,308 Hair grafts breakdown: One hair roots= 691 grafts Two hair roots= 2,670 grafts Three hair roots= 1,392 grafts Four hair roots= 555 grafts Total hair roots= 5,308 grafts To view this client in detail, please click on the following Youtube video link
  8. In LA there’s Mohebi, not sure about OC to be honest. In San Diego theres Dr. Carman, who’s highly rated. In SF area there’s Dr. Diep, who was my surgeon.
  9. I could answer for H&W, yes they do have technicians who do the extractions. The doctor is involved in originally discussing the plan with you, I.e graft total, where to draw the hairline etc.. and then after his technicians are done creating extractions, the doctor comes back into the room to make incisions for where your grafts will go. After he’s done, another group Of techs will place the grafts in. this is a pretty consistent practice Among many of the top surgeons. Only a handful do the extractions themselves, dr. Diep is one that I know that does it. However, consulting with dr. Hasson, rahal, Bisanga and eugenix, they all have technicians who do the extractions. this isn’t a problem, if H&w are putting out consistent results, they have a good team behind them. If you’re choosing H&W, you’re going with one of the best in the world. as for everything else mentioned, someone else may be better equipped to answer. Whether you should do it now, depends on long term medication use & and family history to try to see where you’ll be headed down the road. A lot of the good FUE results I see here, guys could shave their hair down to as little as 0.5 and it’s hardly noticeable. Look up mike thurston on YouTube, he had an fue done and keeps his hair very short, so that could be an example of the expectations
  10. I would like to ask Dr. Gabel's about his experience with FUT vs FUE graft yield rates. Many of us have seen the study that shows yields can be comparable. However according some top surgeons who perform both techniques including Dr. Bloxham and Dr. Diep, graft quality and survival rate for FUT is still better. Which is closer to the truth, per your patients' results?
  11. Thanks for the reply. I consulted with Dr. Rahal in person, because thankfully he also operates in Toronto. All other doctors including H&W, Bisanga, Diep, eugenix and a couple of others I reached out to online and for the most part they all told me roughly the same thing and the general consensus was 2-2.5k grafts would suffice and the final count would be something we would agree on day of surgery. As for Dr. Rahal, he looked at my head briefly and estimated that he wouldn’t go more than 2,500 grafts. Maybe the pictures don’t depict it well but there is some further recession past the hairline, mainly in the temples. Anyway they all directed my attention to the possibility of further loss, but I’ve been told that my donor area is above average. (one of rahals consultants even estimated 8,400 grafts, but I honestly don’t know how he derives that number and won’t go off it until a surgeon tests, and measures it correctly, to tell me how much is in the bank) But you’re right, at this point I’m trying to weigh the potential for a cosmetic improvement with the conservation of my donor for the future. It’s a tricky business. May I ask how long you’ve been on meds and what dosage ? Has it worked to stabilize for you ? Any noticeable problems ? cheers
  12. Yeah surprises me too. I believe Dr. Diep as an example has been operating this whole time. They’re gonna be busy rescheduling a whole lot of patients
  13. Hey y’all , so I finally got my hairtransplant November 30th 2018.. it’s been a journey looking for clinics and choosing the right method . FUE or FUT n how many grafts is needed etc. I’ve been researching for 1.5 years now on hairloss around age 37.. prior to that I had great hair that I took for granted .. My family don’t have a history of hairloss , so I always assumed that the hairs would grow back .. . so I was in a lot of denial of why I’m losing hair.. I was adamant I only wanted FUE n wanted it to be with a top notch clinics .. I panicked last year n booked with doctor rassman for 1200 grafts for late 2017.. after more research I realize they weren’t great at dense packing hairlines. So I canceled on them n booked with doctor Baubac for 1400 grafts . then two weeks prior to surgery . Dr baubac canceled on me n advised me to stay on finasteride for a full year first. Since he didn’t want me to be chasing my hairline .. at first I was angry about this .. I waited for months for this surgery n I got canceled on so I started researching other clinics .. n Drove 2 hours to dr dieps office for a live consultation in March 2018.. the consultation went well, even though it was quick , but he drew the hairline for me , in one minute .. he was artistic n knew what he was doing .. I was hoping to get a more in depth consultation however , like getting my hair diameter checked . My balding pattern , how much donor I had etc .. overall the consult went good but fast .. but one thing that sold me was doctor diep said to me u should let me do ur hair , since he’s really good with asian hair .. so I was sold .. booked with them for 2000 grafts FUE for October 2018 for $16,000. After that consult I was happy I got my clinic , but disappointed that in 4 months my hair has gotten a lot thinner n receding enough to where I need 2000 grafts now , even while on finasteride.. well fast forward to October 2018 one week before my surgery date with diep .. during this time I had lost my debit card , so I told them I can wire the money by bank transfer.. they didn’t want to do this , since they said it will take a few days to clear .. n I have until that afternoon to pay. I told them my debit card should be coming today or tomorrow .. but instead they canceled on me n rebooked me for October 2019. The next day my debit card came , n I emailed them to see if I can get back my original surgery date . Since I can pay the whole $16000 now .. but it seems like already filled my spot with someone else . Well I was like fine , I look elsewhere if they going to be like that .. I sure ain’t waiting another year for them . If they going to be like prior to surgery , I can only imagine how difficult it would be if I didn’t get a good result n coming back n asking them for a repair or refund etc .. I know it ain’t gonna happen ... n quite honestly , I was really afraid of getting .9mm or 1mm punch size holes.. It doesn’t look pretty .. but his results are fantastic though , so I was willing to ignore that .. I also didn’t like that he has two patients a day . So to work on me n another patient At the same day .. i don’t feel like I’m getting $16,000 worth .. I want the doctors full attention with that kind of money .. but don’t get me wrong .. I would highly recommend dr. Dieps clinic.. he’s one of the best at hairline work and maximizing ur grafts .. if I ever need a touch up to my hairline or temporal points I will definitely consider them again . But , so the very next day I contacted h&w .. they said they had an opening next week .. n was willing to pay for my flight n 3 nights hotel .. n had no problem taking a bank transfer from me .. so the next day I booked my flight and was going to Canada the following week .. to be continued .. p.s. pic below is me last year at 38 prior to surgery ..
  14. Hi Abi, my first procedure I had 2600 Grafts. I've always had thick hair but a higher hair line. The first procedure didn't go well mostly with staff. They put tape directly on side grafts which pulled out grafts. I also felt the procedure was rushed and only lasted eight hours. I was over sedated and the whole procedure just felt choppy. The FUT strip also wasn't cut off in a fashion manner, it felt pulled and tugged. I was upset about a lot of this. However, Dr.Diep has great results with patients, five star ratings and the photos of thousands of patients to back his work. He offered a second procedure for only half the cost. I only spent $5,000 this time around. I was there for 12 hours and the process was very, very smooth this time around. I'm hoping this is the last time and I get the hairline and density desired, which I think I will this time around. How do you think the hairline looks? Much thanks.
  15. Let me guess: Dr. Diep 😉 It looks all normal, do not be worried.
  16. It looks good, but you can see the scars at that length, you may want taper the fade from a #1 into a #2. Dr. Diep was my surgeon as well, I think he did a great job on you 🙌
  17. I got my hairline reconstructed by Dr. Diep 13 days ago, tomorrow will be the two week mark! My hair has been thinning and hairline receding since I was about 22 years old and started to take Propecia when I was 25, which slowed it down considerably. Around age 28 I added Rogaine to the mix, which pretty much halted the recession. The hairline wasn't too bad, but is slightly thin and I had been waiting for the "next miracle" for the past 5 years (Histogen, Replicel, Tsuji) and finally...a couple months ago came to the conclusion that they weren't anywhere near close despite all the time has lapsed and decided to just go ahead and move on with the transplant. I selected Dr. Diep because I heard he was good with Asian males and a hairline pro. Pardon my poor pictures, I never intended to create a thread until I got on here a few days ago, so didn't take too in depth of pictures. Attached is my hairline drawing and one day post op pictures. As you can see my donor area looks pretty beat up...which was a disappointment because I did not expect this much surface area used for approximately 2,000 grafts.
  18. Hey everyone, I recently (~2 weeks ago) had an FUT procedure done by Dr. Diep in Los Gatos, CA. This is my second FUT procedure. The previous one was about 5 years ago by a different doc and had rather weak results. First procedure before and after (5 years ago, 4 years ago, and about a month ago): Pre original procedure 1 year post orig procedure 3 weeks ago, 5 years post original procedure... and pre 2nd procedure So now for the most recent procedure with Dr. Diep. First of all, the experience was much more relaxed than my previous. Dr. Diep instills a lot of confidence and his approach is very straight forward and reassuring. He decided FUT would work best for me and was hoping to get 3500 grafts and cut out my original scar. Unfortunately, he was only able to retrieve about 2500 grafts but refunded me the difference. I went with the shot of stem cells (PRP or whatever) to help everything take and stimulate growth. Here are some pics of post surgery up until now (about 2 weeks later): donor area is feeling pretty tight. Definitely not as much flexibility as their was the first time. scar goes fairly high up this time here it is today. I know I'll likely lose most of this in the next two weeks or so... but interesting to see the new hairline / density I might hope to see again in about years time.
  19. I would seriously reconsider going through with this plan. So, without Finasteride you're going to continue to thin. In fact, implanting in between existing hair can exacerbate the loss of surrounding native hair. You could actually permanently shock out some of your native from the trauma of surgery. Your net gain wouldn't be very noticeable. Dr Diep extracts very high in the donor and what could be considered out of the safe zone. I don't believe you would have another 1000 left after getting 2000 from him now. Your donor already looks very thin. Dr. Diep uses a 1 mm punch and he doesn't particularly take a sensible approach to donor harvesting. He doesn’t extract uniformly and wherever he extracts from is going to be thin. You probably won't be able to keep your sides as short as you have them in the most current pictures. Just be careful man this is a slippery slope.
  20. I had a similar experience to @John Doe. I had two consultations with Rahal's reps (one was with Aron while he was still with the clinic), and after the second consultation I e-mailed the rep to request to meet with Dr. Rahal. He set that up for me with no problem, and the next time Dr. Rahal was in Toronto I got to meet with him while another rep took notes of our conversation. Many clinics as busy as theirs use reps to coordinate because imagine how much time would be taken from the Doctor. Again when I asked to see him they accommodated me. My experience with HW rep was also less impressive. He seemed to drive the conversation with his ego for no reason and it felt like a negotiation. Another thing i was disappointed with was that unlike Rahal's reps, he did not take any measurements of my donor area or measured for density. On all three of my visits that was standard at Rahal's clinics, they gave me numbers to work with in my head which I think is absolutely important. After eyeballing my head, the HW rep gave me an estimate and told me my donor looked to "in good shape". I shouldnt make it out like it was entirely bad, I just had different expectations coming into it. Regardless, I understand that the reps are obviously not direct representation of the doctor's work... and both are still top clinics and atm I'm having trouble deciding between them.
  21. I cannot comment on Dr. Diep but I did hear today that the ban on "elective" surgery procedures were being lifted today.
  22. @FUEblonde1986 did you happen to have your April follow up with Dr. Diep yet? Also, can you comment more deeply on the state of your donor? If you cut the hair short, can you still see the rough outline of where the doctor did the extractions in terms of it being less dense than the surrounding areas? cc @FUEblonde1985 since I’m not sure which one you are getting emails on.
  23. You definitely can achieve a great result. I’m very satisfied with my results from Dr. Diep. That being said, I would definitely try finasteride first. It could help immensely.
  24. Thanks for the update. Your donor looks very similar to mine, which gives me hope that in both of our cases, it is closer to the norm than it is an outlier. The Dr. Diep donor management horse has just about been beaten to death, but I do want to state one final time that I wish he spread out the extractions more evenly throughout the donor, so that even if there is patchiness and sparseness long term, at least it looks symmetrical. That is the thing that continues to stump me.
  25. I am 32 year old, currently a NW3. I originally planned on having a HT w/Dr. Diep. He estimated that I would need around 1500-2000 grafts, FUE, to restore my hairline and I booked a date and made the non-refundable deposit. However, recent posts on the forum made me concerned about his approach to one sided donor area extraction, over harvesting, and what appears to be increased trauma to the donor area relative to other surgeons performing FUE.. I began researching other surgeons and found Dr. Hasson from HnW. An online consultation estimated me needing 2000-2500 grafts via FUE (I have had some increased thinning since my original consultation w/Dr. Diep). From what I found, however, it appears that Dr. Hasson is somewhat hands off and allows his techs to do the majority of the work, although I may be misinformed on this. I did find that to be concerning, however. Overall, I was wondering what the community's opinion is about each surgeon, and if I should choose one over the other Thanks!!!
